This place is a lifesaver! Amazing prices, long hours (10 a.m.-10 p.m.) and great massages. I tried it the 1st time on a recommendation (they have enticing introductory prices) and then did it again on a Living Social coupon. After that I decided to become a member ($95/person, $179/couple) for a year membership. When you walk in, you get a cup of hot tea, then are taken into an open room where you soak your feet in hot water then get massaged while seated and leaning against a cushion. Then you lay back in the chair while they work on your feet, calves and legs. The body massages are great. You undress (at first I thought they would massage you through your clothes which is common with Chinese massage places) and the massage pressure is as deep or light as you ask for. The massage therapists are all Chinese guys and have a no-nonsense approach. The member specials are an unbeatable value. I get the 75 minute Foot Reflexology & Body Combo for $48 (an additional 20% off if you go Tuesday- Thursday). I work hard and play hard, and I really need regular massage and pampering. I heart this place & am so glad it opened here in Oakland not far from where I live. My friend put me onto membership here, where you pay $95/year and then get deep discounts every time you visit, 30% during your birthday month and one-time 50% as a birthday present. I called at the end of my birthday month, since I forgot about the special and didn't have my email in the system to get a reminder, and they said I could use the next month for the specials since I missed it, as a thanks for being a member. Membership makes me want to come more often to take care of myself, and while I went about 4 of 5 times my first year, which makes the membership worth it (it's nice to spread out the cost), my goal is to go at least monthly this year, to help keep my stress levels down & health up. I was worried that the quality of massages wouldn't be consistent since so many folks work & go here, but every single time I've been has been top quality, and I always leave wanting to melt right into my bed afterwards, with the best sleep ever, especially when the foot reflexology is included, it's dreamy. Chinese massages are definitely a little bit more yang than the relaxing Swedish style that some folks in the U.S. are used to, but they absolutely do the job & leave me incredibly relaxed, balanced and aligned, and the therapists will adjust to how you like it, just let them know at the beginning. I highly recommend the combos, and you can ask for more body massage time and less foot time if you want, they'll accommodate. I don't mind the communal heavenliness happening nearby, but it would be nice to have a bigger and more open space, since they're popular and could grow into a bigger space. Decided to try this place with a friend and glad we did. They offer an introductory price of $48 for 75 minutes treatment (foot reflexology, 25 minute body). Walked in and directed to the small area behind the front desk of communal reclining chairs. This wasn't a surprise but i thought the space was a little close to one another for my taste. My friend was a little taken aback as she had never experienced this type of massage in a communal setting even with close on. At first we were told to sit on the ottoman while holding the cushion draped with a towel and to rest our head, arms on while the masseuse did some massaging of our shoulders, neck...it was a little awkward as they were pressing you had to somewhat keep your balance. This was about 10 minutes...then onto the foot soaking, leg and foot massage which was wonderful. for the last 25 minutes, you are directed to a private room for the body massage. Now, this was totally worth it...focusing on areas on needed most (shoulders, neck, head, face)....ahhhh, relief. Overall a great experience...advised tipping $10 - $15 for 75-90 minute massages. Prior to this experience, I've been to Kume several times and have been really pleased with their service, ambiance, and the staff. I usually get the foot and body massage combination, and their masseurs are consistently amazing and responsive to feedback. Sometimes I like high pressure and other times low pressure; the masseuse quickly make adjustments and pay attention to your body's reaction. I've received a table massage once, and same experience. This nice Asian lady led me to the body scrub room (where they also had the infrared sauna to the side). She was super friendly and explained how it worked. I feel like I just visited a monastery. It was so peaceful. I've walked and driven past Kume several times and have always wondered about the place. When I finally booked an appointment I was surprised at how cavernous the place feels inside. Long generous hallways and capacious rooms. It is so much bigger than it appears from the portion that faces the street. Inside the music is soothing (waves, chimes, sea birds) and light filters through a gauzy curtain. The scent is immediately soothing. The women at the front desk are well dressed, well-spoken, and kind. They offer you tea or water. Being that it's a tea bar I expected them to offer me tea options, but instead, they gave me what they had brewed that day, and it was fabulous. I could taste the flowers. I am a nerd who likes to look under teacups for where they were made, and this one was from Ikea (the sticker was still in place), and that gave me a good chuckle. In the lobby are lots of teas and tea accessories and little cards and children's books--all very positive and pretty. They have a simple form for new visitors, and it includes a place for you to mark/describe your worst tension, the way you would at a doctor's office--that was a sign to me that they take their patients seriously here. They got me in before my official appointment time, and everything that followed was just so perfect and impressive. My therapist Tony was calm and seemed able to find all my tension spots. I had purchased the foot reflexology package, but what I didn't know is that while waiting for your foot to soak in nice hot water your therapist will also massage your neck and back (Bonus!). I am a larger women (200 lbs) and I often feel like I don't quite fit in furniture, but the chairs here were thick and comfy and perfectly sized. They seemed to anticipate so much. I would find myself thinking things like: "Now that I'm leaning back it feels like my tummy is exposed--why yes, I WOULD like a large comfy warm blanket draped over me!" Or: "Now that the neck rub is over my neck really misses the warmth--why yes, I WOULD love a hot neck wrap!" And later: "This hot neck wrap is starting to cool off now--why yes, I WOULD like a new one!" It was just so lovely, and when it was all over they gave me another cup of hot tea. I opened my eyes to see so many other people in the massage cavern (that's what it felt like to me), but they were all so silent I never would have known they were there. One thing: I did notice that every technician was completely different. Some seemed more surly and less soothing, but I was so happy with Tony. Also, I heard another reviewer mention that people were checking phones and making noise at her visit. There was none of that here: it was a completely silent room, no matter how many people entered. In fact, when someone sneezed and I said, "Bless you" it felt like I was the noisiest person ever. The environment was kept so soothing and calm. It often isn't clear if a tip is going straight to the person who earned it, but at Kume they are very clear. They ask, "Would you like to leave a gratuity for____?" and then they put it in a small envelope with that person's name on it. So lovely. Starting off by saying I love Kume and I've been a member now for two years. If you find a therapist you like, this is a five star experience. Unfortunately, service is very inconsistent if you see someone new. Clean facilities and bathroom, smells great, nice selection of merchandise, relaxing foot spa room, fresh tea and water, and I've had excellent front desk and phone service. The person I usually see is terrific. Consistent service offering warm rice neck pillow, neck, shoulder and back massage, works arms and hands, stretches my arm and hips, and when I have a headache he will rub my temples and scalp. He is skilled and professional, and you can tell by his attentiveness he takes his job seriously. His energy is very in tune with my needs. Always sees me for a full hour, even if he's running behind. I used to dislike massages, but I need them because of my job- I must say he is the first person that I've had a great all around experience with. Saw a few new people and the experience was night and day. Technique, service and attentiveness was lacking compared to others. I will be a member here as long as I have the therapist I know, because the prices are excellent, especially on Tuesdays. I was in the area and stopped by to get a massage. Look at their website, they have great rates for first time guests. I got the foot reflexology. It was great, don't get me wrong, but just different then the gal I see where I live. This one you put your foot in warm water and sit on an ottoman. You have a giant pillow on your lap and you put your head down and they massage your shoulders and back. It's a good massage, but a bit awkward as you are sitting. Next you move to the chair and move your feet to the ottoman. You sit there the remaining of the time and get your feet and arms massaged. It was a great massage for the price, but I kind of wished I had chosen the regular lay down massage due to it was such a great deal. I'd go back if I were looking for a last minute massage. That was the biggest perk, I called and then went down and 10 minutes later I was getting a much needed massage. read more

You are placed in a big room wth chairs and ottomans lined up against the walls likes you're about to get a pedicure. There are 2 private rooms (like usual massage places) Massage experience: They sat me on an ottoman with a giant pillow in front of me to support me while he massaged my back. I wasn't 100% comfortable and felt like I was balancing the whole time, but the back massage in general felt good. There was also a lot of noise although they tried to be quiet... but it is a room full of people. Then I sat in the seat facing everyone and he massaged my hands and legs. Overall: It isn't a typical massage place, it is super reasonable in price. You really do get what you pay for, but that's not Necessarily a bad thing! I've been coming to Kume Spa for years and am so glad they are re-opened now. I've rotated through different masseuesses over the years and found the majority to be excellent. Those who I didn't prefer are probably fine but just not necessarily right for my body. Environment is relaxing. With the annual membership, prices are very reasonable. The body scrub was definitely interesting...you basically lay naked on a table while they scrub your entire body and since you off with warm water. I definitely felt rejuvenated after but vulnerable because I've never had this experience before. The massage was mediocre. The room was basically split and separated with drapes. Came here with my gf, who is Korean, thanks to a Groupon combining traditional Korean scrub with full body massage for $69. We had called to book a week in advance hoping to have a couple's session, but we were split up so that one person got the scrub before the massage and the other one received the treatments in reverse order. A few thoughts: 1. The disposable undergarment they give the men are not meant for anyone who has 38 waist or higher, we're talking cutting off your circulation to your legs. The lady scrubber apologized for the lack of larger undies. 2. Per my gf, the scrubbing is nowhere near as intense as they should be compared to what's done in Korea. May be a cultural tolerance issue... 3. My masseur was this relatively scrawny guy, looked no older than 25, and only knew maybe 5 different massage techniques, basically a total beginner without any real training. I had circled on my questionnaire where my problem areas were, and he basically missed my entire upper half by focusing only on the rhomboids up to the neck for almost 20 minutes and not working on any other scapula muscles. I had to ask him in Chinese if he could use more pressure even though I circled "Deep" under the amount of pressure I wanted on my questionnaire. My gf had the same guy give her massage and found him to be somewhat lacking as well. 4. My gf asked the scrub lady if the owners were Korean and she said no, the owner is Chinese who wanted provide a similar experience to what's available in Korea. I wish they paid more attention to details. As someone who gets massages almost monthly now for deep tissue soreness, I would not recommend this place if you're looking for a serious massage. read more

I am a second time customer, and this is the day I'm buying the year long membership. I wasn't sure last time if I was going to do that. It wasn't the price of it, it's a totally reasonable price. Hmm...I don't think I knew what I was getting myself into when I signed up for the 75-minute combo package (50 minute foot reflexology massage + 25 minute body massage) for $40 on LivingSocial. Let me start from the beginning. The storefront was inviting, and the environment inside was tranquil with the zen music and the sounds of the water fountain. A perfect setting for relaxation. I was offered a cup of pre-brewed tea (which does not seem fitting for the business name, since it implies you get to choose) and asked to fill out your basic form and sign off on liability. Although I was early, I was brought in 10 minutes to start my appointment. I was instructed to plop my feet into this warm tub of solution as my masseuse kneaded my shoulders and back. Then, the calves and feet. This area has 7 big comfy chairs. The full body massage took place in a room upstairs with only a curtain providing for privacy -- which didn't lend to the zen mood they're trying to promote when you hear conversations and footsteps the entire time. The pressure seems a bit excessive at times, even though I asked for medium pressure. I didn't realize it was the Asian-style acupressure massage (like the chair massages in malls), which was entirely new to me. A lot of slapping, smacking, and elbowing. I much prefer the relaxing type that lulls me to sleep. The elbows (felt sharp against my muscles!) and forearms were abundantly used...to my dismay. I still tipped $20 because of all the effort by my masseuse. Maybe my muscles benefited from all the pressure, but my shoulders are still a bit achy hours later. Boy, was she strong! read more

I've been a Kume member for a year now, so I've gotten monthly body treatments here for that long. For me, massages at fancy spas used to be an occasional, special treat. The short version: this place provides a great service and for the price, I strongly doubt it can be beat. Kume makes it affordable to get regular massages. I am able to go Tues-Thurs, when my member discount means I get an even bigger discount off normal massage prices. If I end up having a therapist that isn't perfect for me, I've usually only spent $60 (that's a good tip included) for a decent 60-min massage. Also, you save a couple bucks paying in cash. Remember these deep discounts when you go in. This place is not The Claremont or Burke Williams, although it's actually pretty nice inside. Very similar massages, HUGE price difference. I've had some of the best 90-minute massages ever at Kume--thank you! Tip: when you find a therapist you like, make appointments only with them. The staff up front are happy to remind you who you prefer. And be absolutely clear with the front staff if you have sensitive areas or need special attention. The default pressure is harder/deeper. The language barrier is tough when you have something as personal as massage, but it's never been a real issue for me. Bonus review: I bought a deal and tried the Korean Body Scrub. Kelly is the one to ask for. Having never done it before, I was a little intimidated but OMG the amount of dead skin that sloughed off, blew me away. I've been spoiled by the amazing Fung Soong reflexology and massage in SF on Kearny St and Montgomery (go there, and tip well!). This was my first (and only) time at Kume, a gift for "Winter Bliss" from my husband for Christmas. I'd be hard pressed to name something good. Here's the bad: Masseur was incompetent. Nothing was communicated to me in terms of how they run the appointment (back rub first, etc.). He FELL ASLEEP rubbing my feet. He did not seem to have a clue what he was doing. The back rub was pointless. I should have walked out after the foot rub fiasco, I have no idea why I didn't. You know when you keep talking yourself out of something because you can't believe how bad it is? Awful atmosphere. One big room and the privacy drapes between chairs weren't used. Cushions were stacked randomly on unused chairs. Very dark, hard to see how clean things are (or aren't). Did I mention he FELL ASLEEP 15 or 20 minutes into the "reflexology" portion? Again, kept thinking I had to be wrong because WHEN DOES THAT HAPPEN?! Unprofessional looking and acting front desk staff. Jeans and hoodies? When I said my treatment was very unsatisfactory I got indifference and the standard "I'll have to charge you but will let my manager know." I've waited since last week for the manager to reach out to me before posting this. I have heard nothing. It's called a "tea bar" but no one offered me tea or water while I waited. For 15 minutes. Until after I complained, as I was eagerly waiting to leave. No thanks, Kume. And I would have been a regular. I'd rather schlep back to SF Chinatown for Fung Soong. read more

You can even have your ringer turned on loud, and staff won't bat an eye. If you're looking for a quiet, peaceful, restorative experience, where your phone is the last thing you are thinking about, Kume is DEFINITELY not your place. Yes, I say this from experience. My bad for not researching that Kume doesn't ask their customers to silence their phones so others can enjoy their experience. I enjoyed a 1 hour foot massage today, mid-day. The gentleman doing my massage spoke little English, making basic requests (too hard, hair tie please) a bit hard to communicate. The back and neck massage was abrupt and involved lots of pinching and elbows. A couple of times I winced. The foot massage was heavenly: attentive, just the right pressure, and finished with a hot towel. However, a bit of a negative: my therapist burped with his mouth opened several times toward the end of the hour. Now, I know body stuff happens, but it ruined the vibe to have some burping above you. Last time I was there, I had the sniffling guy with a cold. I think I like this place, but not sure if I would go back. I tried this place out through a Groupon and was aware of the expansion going on, so not sure if all the chairs on the main level are usually that close together. Check-in was fine, but everything was quiet and when my therapist came to get me, there was hardly any talking. I think my therapist only knew a little bit of English as he didn't introduce himself and hardly talked, but he gave me a nice massage. I asked for my back and shoulders to be worked on the most with medium to soft strokes and that is what I got. Once we were done with the chair massage - back, foot soak, and legs and feet massage, I was taken upstairs for the back and head massage on the table. I just felt that the place was trying to fit in as many people as possible. I read the signs about membership, but did not receive any information about it upon checking out. It was weird as I told them upon making my appointment I had never been there before. I guess since I've gotten massages before, they assumed I knew what to do? I really don't have any complaints as the massage was fine, just not what I am used to since it starts in a common room with about 7 chairs, and then a private room upstairs. Kume definitely earns five stars easily. I've.been going there about a year, typically I go twice a week and get 60 or 90 minute foot massage. I have a bit of neuropathy in my feet and legs and having them worked on deeply is just right for me. About 25% of the time at the beginning is with your feet soaking while the therapist works on neck, back and arms. It is very relaxing. All of the therapist are similar in their capability, though small differences make different therapists favorites for different reasons. My favorites are Paul, Amy and Tim but that's just me. Tea services is only ok. Definitely not the reason to go. They have complex pricing involving discounts for membership on membership days, and 5 or 10 packs on other days. When you maximize their program the 60 minute massage averages about $33. They recommend a $10 tip for 60 minutes though I usually do more, but again, that's just me. They are across from the Lake next to a big gym and parking on Saturday and Sunday afternoons can be a challenge. On those days I will Uber/Lyft or bike there. Enjoy.
