You will never really know who your waiter is here as everyone is helping everyone---just a heads up. Also, the soup and/or salad drenched in 1000 island dressing is not at all good but expected at this price point hence the loss of a star. For what it is, good value. Vibrant Decor, Chef's Artistic Creations, and Urban Feel I took my mother here and enjoyed the hospitality, vibrant and ecclectic decor, and the beautiful creations by the sushi chef. I've been a few times since and the sushi is consistently top knotch. I always order some kind of large combination to share with friends and feel as though I'm eating a work of art. While I am more of a traditionalist (give me the beautiful cuts of fresh fish, crustaceans, and mollusks without/or with very little rice, others really enjoy the seemingly endless varieties of rolls with weekly features and two pages of standards.The wasabi is toned down a bit, so you can apply it more liberally without getting the dreaded nasal burn:-) The sodas are from a fountain and the mix seems a little off so I recommend tea, beer, water or wine instead of the chlorinated, off-mix sprite I had last week. Other than that, I have no complaints whatsoever. The ambience feels a bit more urban than Ariake in Reston and a little less bustling than the sushi restaurant in the Reston Town center. If it weren't for the incredibly rude service I received the last time I was at this place, it would have gotten 5 stars. For quality of food, it rivals Sweet Ginger and Yamazato, sushi is amazing although overpriced in my opinion. The spicy rolls are great, as are the specialty rolls and sushi/sashimi appetizers. Now, that being said, I am a pretty regular customer at Kumo, always tip well, bring in friends, etc. The last time I went I was appalled at the audacity of the waitress as well as the terrible service. She was rude and had an attitude from the get-go but whatever, everyone has a bad day so we let it go. However, we ordered between two people about 90 dollars worth of sushi, so not a small order. She then spent the next 45 minutes talking and laughing with the table next to use, despite trying to get her attention for refills on our empty drinks. So the food comes, missing 3 rolls, and the girl who brought the food had to bring our refills. When our waitress walked by (not to check on us just strolled by) I asked her where our other rolls was to which she responded angrily that they were coming, 20 minutes later still not to be seen. When we asked for a refill on water it took about 15 minutes to get. Now just to set the stage for this, there were 3 total tables in the restaurant, 2 in her section. I have never not tipped a server before (despite whatever bad thing happened) but I did not leave her any tip. I have never had such terrible service in my life. Came here on a Monday evening. Quiet and cleanly decorated. Had your handful of white folks spotted throughout. You know. Those just learning to use chopsticks. Always reluctant when I'm the only Asian patron in the place. The reasoning here is that Japanese ppl who know sushi usually frequent the legit spits such as sushi yoshi (Vienna) or tachibana (McLean). Noticed that the place is chinese run. Perhaps that explains the Chinese music piping over the intercom. Nothing against the Chinese but I'm inclined to think that they're better with dimsum or Peking duck. It always irks me when I see restaurants trying to do much. Most times, less is more. In this case, a sushi spot should focus on its sushi and not trying to conceive some brilliant new dish. For example, their red bull roll. "lobster tempura, avocado, asparagus, inside with seared filet mignon, jalapeño, ikura on top". Perhaps there were too many chefs in the kitchen when they came up with the menu. I've never seen anyone attempt to marry these ingredients together. There's a reason why you won't see this roll at nobu or morimotos. It just doesnt work. App - Age tofu. Had much better elsewhere. Very lacking in the dried Ginger flakes usually found with this dish. Sushi/Sashimi - opted out this time bc some of their menu items were unavailable. Rolls - surprisingly nicely done. Got the Hot Girls Roll, Philly Roll, and the Shrimp Tempura Roll. Again, their menu is replete with rolls which are just trying to hard. Give me some clean rolls with nice chunks of fresh fish. While leaving, took a look around. Wasn't surprised to see edamame, california rolls, and chicken teriyaki on most of the tabletops. So three stars for a little spot that does decent rolls. Listen to the Yelpers! For this price range of sushi and considering the 'competition' in the area, this is by far the best. I visit for lunch or dinner probably once a week. The service is always great and the selection of sushi is huge! They always have 2-3 weekly specials that are more expensive, but worth picking one to try out. As someone else has already noted, the presentation is beautiful with large plates, sometimes light-up displays on the plate, and different sauces and toppings than you see around. The Dancing Dragon roll is very good, but honestly they're all so good I have a hard time choosing what I have every time I go. If only there were enough space in my belly I would eat sushi here all day. Also, if you're going with someone that isn't a huge fan of sushi, they have plenty of other items on the menu including a hibachi plate menu, soups, and cooked fish plates. Note: there is a list of sushi rolls in the regular menu. There is also a separate menu of "Special Rolls" (make sure you check out that list) and then there are weekly specials on the board behind the hostess stand. This may sound a little silly, but I also really like they they offer you individual hand wipes as soon as you sit down. 2.5 Stars. It's an OK. I've been here twice and when I went the second time--I thought I was going to a new sushi restaurant but it turns out it was Kumo. The only thing that I remembered about this place was the high prices. We ordered: 1. Red Bull Roll. I believe this is the one with the 'Slices of Beef Filet'. It has jalapeno peppers on it so it has a nice little kick. I can't say much for the beef filet. It didn't wow me. 2. Shrimp Tempura Roll. I do have a problem with the amount of rice that they stuff into all of their rolls. I love my rice but it comes to a point of ridiculous here because I will get to it later 3. Tuna Sushi. I'm not really a raw fish kind of girl and I decided to be brave and try one during dinner. It was pleasantly surprising. If I were to come back to Kumo, I'd definitely order some more Tuna Sushi pieces. It was really good. Didn't have a strong seafood taste at all. Probably the most surprising part of dinner. 4. One Roll that I can't remember. This roll was good but apparently wasn't good enough for me to remember the name, unfortunately. It was Shrimp Tempura based again--but like I said before--the amount of rice that they put on these rolls... it's ghastly. It was honestly--a good half inch thick rice. It was wrapped in yellow soy paper and absolutely impossible to eat. I had to take two bites each time. Just way too much rice. It is nice that they offer you wet wipes before you eat to clean off your hands. I did like that aspect of Kumo. However, I do not like how the sushi chefs stand idly around the restaurant. I assume that this restaurant can get busy and maybe that is why they have 5+ sushi chefs but I find it unprofessional for them to stand around and watch the television and chat with one another very loudly when there are customers in the store. read more

If 2 rolls just isn't enough, you can pick 3 rolls for $13 + tax. I'd probably have to take a nap afterwards if I did 3 rolls, 2 suits me just fine. The salad comes with a tasty ginger salad dressing and you get miso for your soup option. The sushi is decent, not spectacular, but freshly made! This sushi restaurant puts a lot of effort into presentation for their sushi! The sashimi deluxe comes out on top of a big bowl of ice and decorated nicely with orchids among other plants. Each dish is uniquely designed to stand out among the others. The sashimis were mostly fresh but the black tobiko I had were not fresh. It had dark liquids coming out of it and tasted a little funky. Overall, the cuts were generous at times. I did not get to try their other entrees aside from the fresh sushi and rolls. Service was decent. You can tell that they try really hard, especially since when I came we were the only ones in the restaurant during lunch time. Definitely a place I would recommend if you are looking for a little creativity in your food but it does not scream "WOW" to my tastebuds. read more

If you are looking for good sushi. Kumo is the place. This is one of my favorite sushi restaurant in town. We order pretty much everything on the menu. I love their salmon roll, spicy tuna, spider and shrimp tempura. If you really want a loaded sushi, try the Angry Dragon roll. Its deliciously filling. It's always fresh and you can't go wrong with any of their selections. I give them a 10 for presentation! THE FOOD: 1-2 stars Rolls were sloppy-looking on the plate, fillings in poor proportions, and not fresh tasting, with fish on the mushy side and roe, wrinkled and sad. Sushi rice can make or break sushi. So guess what they did. They said "we aren't even going to play that game!," and just took it out of the equation completely. So the rice in your roll is plain white rice, not sushi rice! I completely fail to understand this. Making sushi rice is hardly expensive, and this one glaring shortcut to save time and money shows their whole attitude towards the food they serve. Inevitably, we come to the wasabi. Not only is it not wasabi (as is the case in most restaurants because of its expense), from the taste of it it's not even the horseradish that is so popular as a substitute. I ate a whole fourth or fifth of a teaspoon before I could register any of the sinus tearing sensations you normally associate with a quantity half that amount. My guess is that they use a mustard powder based mix to create their "wasabi," the cheapest form of imitation wasabi. Even the soy sauce tasted watered down. And the pickled ginger is barely pickled and not very gingery, something I never thought would be an issue! Decent pickled ginger is neither expensive nor particularly time consuming to make, especially if you're going to the trouble of making pickled ginger in the first place. SERVICE: 1 star The waitstaff here try to upsell to the point of rudeness. We ordered maguro sashimi and the waitress asked if we wanted to "get blue fin tuna only 50c more." I said no thanks, to which she replied, "Why? You don't like better things?" Throughout our dinner, they pushed whatever they could at us until we were exasperated, including oysters (which they couldn't tell me the name or provenance of ), and other sashimi that we were clearly not interested in. To add to this irritation, your table will be waited upon by not one, not two, but three waitresses, none of whom apparently communicate with each other, so you have to say everything three times. This seemed to be standard practice since every table I could see was approached several times by several waitstaff. One further gripe is the (very slightly) better service offered to the suited-up business folk at the table next to ours. I can only assume that the reason was the business suits (though maybe being white men also helped). FACILITY: 1-2 stars The restaurant itself is very orange. Orange pleather(?) chairs, orange lighting, 3-D orange wall tiles. Maybe things were in good shape once, but the pleather is now worn, the tables are scratched, and the place has a certain feeling of dirtiness. The overhead lighting, which is too harsh for the place imho, only magnifies these faults. LAST WORD: The quality of food and service are utterly subpar. I wasn't expecting anything fantastic at this price range, but what I got was definitely lacking. The hardest to forgive though was the lack of integrity in food. Avoid this place unless you know your visit isn't really about the food. read more

Previously I have been to a couple of other sushi restaurants in the Herndon/Reston area, and so far I like Hama Sushi the best. Kumo seems to be run by Chinese people rather than Japanese, whereas Hama comes across as more authentic, if you like traditional Japanese cuisine. The presentations here at Kumo are totally over the top, with tons of shredded radish all over the plate and all kinds of garnish, but much less actual sushi. I had the chirachi; salmon and white tuna were good, but shrimp was dry and snapper tough. There was also faux crab, which I hate and really ruins everything. Kind of uninteresting overall. The reason is not as much the food quality but the price. It is very high. But the food is not very good either. The nigiri sushi is well below average in terms of both the quality and the quantity of fish. And the special rolls are nothing special at all - very bland. Compared to all of the other sushi places I've been to, this has the freshest fish (no mushy sashimi or fears of food poisoning). Their menu is lengthy and they have the traditional offerings as well as a large specialty menu that will keep me coming back for more. If I could marry a restaurant, it would be Kumo Sushi. I take you, Kumo Sushi, to be my favorite sushi restaurant, to eat at for lunch and dinner from this day forward, for good customer service, for extremely affordable meals, for deliciousness in said affordable meals, to love and to cherish the decor and presentation; from this day forward until death or my pants not being able to button do us part. I'll admit that I'm not the most seasoned sushi connoisseur, but out of all of the local restaurants I've tried, Kumo Sushi is my #1 place. I have never been disappointed by anything I've ordered there (my absolute favorite is the Tiffany Roll), the presentation is usually creative and cool, the atmosphere is kinda trendy (though I would do away with the big screen tvs as I don't think it's a sports bar type place), and customer service is typically excellent. My only complaint (and it's minor) is that sometimes the waitstaff can be too good. Others on here have described them as ninjas and that's pretty accurate - clothed in black they pop out of nowhere to refill your drink! I have met with several friends here and sometimes we like to chat it up while we're eating or afterwards when the bill arrives and having your waitress watching you from only a couple feet away from the table can be a little awkward. Only once were all the tables filled and I understood the need to get us out of there so the next people could be seated, but usually we get there late and there are not many customers in the restaurant. On a few occasions there was still an hour or so til closing time, but our waitress constantly hovering over our table, especially after we had paid the bill, was not very inviting. I've been to Kumo about a dozen times and I have yet to be disappointed. Yes, it's located in Herndon. Yes, it's located inside a strip mall with horrible parking and yes, it's wedged in between Pei Wei and Panera.. But this place really delivers. Decor is modern and clean. Seating is limited and the place tends to get crowded on the weekends, but the fun selection of sushi rolls, and the overattentive staff makes this my local go-to sushi joint. I recently tried the Mermaid roll and wasn't expecting the amount of sushi on my plate. I originally order an additional roll (yellow tail and jalapeno $5) to accompany it, but I was having a hard enough time finish just one roll. I like to get a small hot sake $4 and I never find it necessary to order apps since the rolls are abundant. I also would like to point out that they do take reservations. I had a party of 10 for a Friday night dinner and needless to say, we were immediately sat at our designated table which was already set-up for us before we arrived. I was expecting to wait a while since they were so busy, but they even had a reserved sign on our long table. Great food! Great service! Great experience! read more

If you're looking for a delicious sushi place with a wide variety of rolls, look no further! My fiance and I love going out to sushi and LOVE coming to Kumo. The staff is always friendly, they remember us, and every waitress we've had has been great. The service is quick, the presentation is great, and the food is amazing! I can honestly say that I have not been disappointed with a visit here and we've had many (read: over 14 visits to this particular restaurant). That being said I have made only a single bad choice in rolls when it contained 5 different kinds of fish; overload that didn't taste as good as it sounded. The special rolls vary in price according to the contents and they have really interesting, tasty rolls! I have been around the country and i'm so lucky to have found this place so close to home; (living in Herndon). The prices for some rolls are high, but there is plenty to find at a reasonable price. The appetizers are delicious and also reasonably priced. My default rolls are the Volcano Roll (spicy tuna inside with avacado and spicy sauce outside) and the Yummy Roll (shrimp tempura inside with spicy tuna outside). They also have great menu selections for those who are not sushi lovers, so bring the whole group without fear; there's something for everyone. Don't forget the mango with sticky rice for desert as well...mmmm... They have a sister restaurant in Alexandria (Manchester Lakes Shopping center near Kingstown) that is just as great! read more

Came here for lunch with a few coworkers. At noon, the restaurant was crowded, but we were still seated immediately. Service is very fast and the food is good for the price. You can get out of here for under $15 including tip. I had the bento box with teriyaki chicken. It came with miso soup or salad to start and then grilled veggies, rice, shumai, and California rolls with the chicken. They also have sushi plate lunch options where you can get two or three rolls. I'm really surprised this place has high ratings on Yelp. Where do I begin?! Well, I found this place because I was looking for a sushi restaurant that had bluefin tuna. Service is mediocre. Our server was not very friendly and she didn't seem to know the menu very well. First I ordered the 'sexy jalapeno' that was on the special menu. I pointed to it as I was ordering so she could see exactly what I wanted. She still had a hard time understanding what I was telling her. She told me I needed to specify which jalapeno roll I wanted. She seemed a little annoyed. Apparently there is more than one jalapeno roll and I felt like I was expected to know this. Then I asked her about the a la carte menu because I wanted to order the tuna (maguro). I asked her how many pieces came with one order. She said two. I also ordered an uni. My friend ordered a roll and a la carte tuna sashimi. I also asked her how much the toro was (because on the menu it says 'market price'). I don't think she even knew what toro was. She kept saying it was 2 pieces and again seemed annoyed that I asked. She never end bothered to ask someone else how much it was. I just figured I'd let her off the hook and just not order it. When our order came out, there were two tuna sashimi and one tuna sushi and one uni all on the same plate. We had to call back the waiter to ask what was on the plate because I was told that one a la carte order came with two pieces. Then I was told that sushi comes with one piece and sashimi comes with two. I might as well just ordered the sashimi because there is no point in having to sacrifice a piece of fish for rice! Anyway, next was the 'sexy jalapeno'. The roll basically has spicy tuna, jalapeno, and cream cheese and is deep fried. I've had jalapeno rolls at other sushi places and by far this place was the worst. Other places just deep fry the jalapeno and then put it in the roll. This place made the roll, then deep fried everything so the spicy tuna was cooked! It was just very strange. The jalapeno was so spicy that I could barely taste anything else. I don't know why it's called 'sexy jalapeno' it should be called 'spicy jalapeno'. Uni was not fresh. It looked like the uni that is sold at H Mart or Lotte in a wooden box. Anyway, I will not be coming back here again. If you are a sushi lover like me and your regular go to sushi places are Tachibana or Sushi Yoshi, do not come here. You will be disappointed. read more

Nice! I got the sashimi platter, edamame, and an avocado roll, and all of it was solid. Sashimi platter was MORE than enough for a lunch serving for one -- I could have easily split it with my husband instead. read more
