The sushi was good. Everything was really clean and I liked how they hand everyone towlettes to wipe your hands with once you are seated...for this reason alone, they get a three star. There was a maki roll rolled in cucumber that was not good at all. We also ordered a drink and the server said they didn't carry that brand only to find they had it as we looked when walking out. I went last night with my husband. Let me start off with the good: The food was awesome. the ingredients were fresh. We ordered 2 bento boxes and thier "special" 2015 roll... food was great. Now, as somone who frequently goes out to eat, the service provided is a HUGE part of the experience - hence the 3 stars. Our romantic dinner went something like this: - we were seated fairly quickly, which was nice. The decor is beautiful. I saw on the menu that they have a special drink called the "Kumo Mojito", but there was no description on the menu. Once the waitress came to take our drink orders, I asked what was in the Kumo mojito. Her response was: "I dont make the drink, so i dont know" (at this point i was awkwardly staring at her wondering whether she would go find out... nothing. does it have a special flavour? Is it just a regular mojito?) So I responded: "Could you please find out?" She came back a couple of minutes later and said " there is liquor and sugar and juice..." what? Dont all mixed drinks have liquor, sugar and juice? Whatever, at this point i just wanted water. Before we could order our drinks, the waitress walked away. I am not kidding when i say this, walked away as we were about to order our drinks!! -finally, another waitress came to us asking whether our drink orders have been taken... We ordered two drinks - my husband ordered something from the bar (i cant remember) and I ordered water. His drink came before mine, which was fine....I guess. - this second waitress was more helpful. She made reccomendations (the 2015 roll was yummy) and seemed to know a fair amount about the things that we ordered. -now, i understand that this part is of no fault of the restaurant, but we were sandwiched between two rather large families (3+ kids each under the age of 8) who knew each other and happened to bump into each other at the restaurant. The kids would get up and go to each others tables. They were loud. and obnoxious. and loud. and obnoxious. -asking for a refill for water and forks (yes dont judge me - the sticky rice wasnt so sticky and kept breaking up in my bento box!) was like pulling teeth. we had to ask twice for a water refill, and had to wait for a while (over 5 minutes) for a fork. My water refill came after the bill came. At this point, i was so over kumo sushi!!! I almost wanted to tip 10%. We ended up tipping 15% because my husband felt bad.. Overall,3 stars from me. The service was sub par. The food was excellent. My advice: order to go - i'll make sure to do so next time. read more

Came here for my cousin's birthday. Overall we enjoyed the food and service. It was just a bit awkward because we were there between 2pm to 4pm and were the only customers in there. All the waitress stood there and watched us eat and talk. It was very uncomfortable. read more

I think one of the reasons we like going out for sushi on a Friday night is that the staffs seem to be universally pleasant at all the sushi bars in NoVa. (Having said that, next week we'll probably run into a surly staff!). Service was informative and attentive. We ordered miso soup, "Angry Dragon Roll" and "hot girls roll" on recommendation. The ADR is complex and delicious. Tempura shrimp in with mango Could have eaten another one. The hot girl was interesting but not a rave. The place was pretty full at 7:30pm but we got a table without waiting. Another table ordered some kind of sushi/sashimi platter that was delivered with a smoking Dry ice volcano. Pretty exciting. I'm not an avid Yelp reviewer, but this restaurant deserves 5 stars relative to the 2- and 3-star reviews I've read here. Friendly staff, expansive menu, and very attentive. I sat at the sushi bar and the owner, head chef, and many servers rotated serving and chatting with me. Then to top it all off they brought me an unexpected orange for dessert. Expensive, but this place has good sushi. At lunch, it can be very slow, possibly because they just opened. They do have hibachi but they do not cook it in front of you. On the other hand it's cheaper then most places. I had a cucumber roll and an Angry Dragon Roll. The cucumber roll was so so, the Angry Dragon Roll, however, was very good. I highly suggest it. Overall, I liked this place. A little expensive for lunch, but you get what you pay for. Takeout is WAY expensive. The order must be $50 or more, which is prohibitive. I have recently discovered Hama Sushi (kind of across the street in the clock tower, because of this, I have downgraded Kumo (based on price) to 3 stars). read more

Here on business & pleasure for the weekend, decided to check this place out. Food itself is great - sushi is fresh. The vibe is energetic. One thing lacking though is proper management training of servers. Ours in particular, Ivy, was slightly abrasive & didn't seem too thrilled to work our table. She questioned my boyfriend's order for bottled beer insisting it's the same as canned beer; she did not bring an ice cold mug and we had to insist she bring one after she was going to pour the new beer into the glass my boyfriend had already been drinking from. It pains me to say this, but this place has really gone downhill in the past few months. This used to be our 'go to' sushi joint but the wait staff has turned over several times & there is a newer male waiter that is just awful. Unfriendly, borderline rude and has messed up our order the past three times we have been there. Not even sure HOW because they repeat the order back to you. The sushi itself also has gone down hill. Not horrible sushi, just not as good. Too much sauce on some rolls, fish not as fresh tasting on others and still others just seemed off- just overall not very good. Guess we will head back to Yoko in Oakton. Too bad because Kumo used to be outstanding. read more

I came here for lunch today with two co workers. The places looks nice and has a modern touch to it. The service was okay at best. It seemed like some of the staff were very new. The problem I had with this place was how long I waited to get my food. I have a hour long lunch break and work around the corner. It took 40 minutes for a chirashi and two sashimi lunches to come out. Left us with about 5 minutes to eat our food.
