Went here on a Saturday afternoon and the place was empty. Our waitress was pleasant but she literally stood at the end of our table the entire time we were there. Every few minutes she would whisk a piece of paper off our table or refill our cups. This got irritating very quickly and I didn't feel comfortable having much of a conversation with my boyfriend for fear she was listening in. We ordered a few rolls to share and they came out quickly and looked gorgeous. There was a flashing ball on our plate for presentation that made me feel kind of silly being that we were the only ones in the place. The rolls themselves were lukewarm and had no flavor. We ordered the black pepper tuna roll with wasabi sauce expecting a nice kick but the only thing that really came through was a light pepper flavor. Kumo offers excellent sushi at a decent price. We moved recently from Seattle, and this is probably the best sushi place we've been to on the east coast. Rolls are inventive and absolutely delicious. Ordered pick up from here on a Friday night. Not sure if it was extremely busy or what, but the sushi I got was pretty bad. My girlfriend said that she has had better gas station sushi (why someone would get gas station sushi I'll never know!), but I agreed that it wasn't too far off. Had a early dinner this evening with the husband. I ordered shrimp and vegetable tempura appetizer to share, 1 order of the salmon sashimi, 1 order of the Tiffany Roll and 1 order of the crazy salmon roll. The husband ordered the fillet mignon teriyaki. Appetizer came out a few mins later, contained 2 shrimp, 2 squash, 1 unknown veg, and 1 piece of broccoli. Very yummy, crispy and hot! A few mins. later our food came out. The rolls were on the small side of what I usually get at my fav. sushi restaurant (matsutake). All the fish tasted fresh. Crazy salmon roll-it had they weirdest "crunch" topping, looked like little white balls and was topped with some weird white sauce that had no flavor, over all I would give this roll 2 stars- due to lack in flavor. The Tiffany roll was again small compared to others, the roll just lacked flavor. The husband seemed to enjoy his entree. Both presentations were very pretty too! When you walk into Kumo, you will be pleasantly surprised in the decor. It was really pretty and unique. The waitstaff was very attentive and very nice. I would maybe come back if I was in the area, but I was a little disappointed in the rolls and flavor. read more

This place is just so so. Sushi is average at best, more expensive than most, and service and attitude are most disappointing. The staff appears to never be happy at all, no smiles, no thank you's, no welcome backs, appearing just to rush to get your order and get you your check so they can finish getting through their unwelcome work day. I've been here several times to give them another chance but it's always been the same. After you leave here you feel like you paid a lot of money for average food but you were not welcome at all by the staff, nor do they look forward to your return. The sushi was very good, and had quite a variety to choose from.... although I didn't see a scallop sushi roll option anywhere on the menu. The sushi chefs handed us an appitizer on the house shortly after we sat down, which had been freshly prepared tempura white fish (maybe tuna?) drizzled with the bbq eel sauce and something else equally delicious. We ordered the Incredible Hulk, the Hot Girls Roll and the sweetheart Roll which between the two of us, we totally devoured. We had the tempura banana with ice cream for dessert, it was pretty good, I did finish all of it with only a little help from my husband. The only gripe I have is we asked to sit at the sushi bar and they sat us right in front of a tip jar that servers constantly visited to add money to. I'm talking they reached in between us to toss money in a giant martini glass. I don't know why we didn't just scoot down closer by the tv, where my husband wanted to sit in the first place. The food was delicious, next time, we'll walk ourselves over to the sushi bar. We will go back! read more

Love this place! This is our go to sushi restaurant. It's a Herndon gem, kinda hole in the wall, in the Harris Teeter shopping center. Their fish is so fresh and taste amazing and much cheaper than other sushi joints. Don't be deterred by their lower prices, it's a must try and the quality of the fish speaks for itself. The decor lacks imagination, but their food will have you coming back for more. We always get sashimi so we can get the fresh, pure taste of the fish. Yum!!! They also have options such as hibachi, noodles, teriaki, katsu, etc (that's cooked in their back kitchen) for the non-raw fish eaters. My husband gets hibachi when he's not in the mood for sushi. It's very flavorful and cooked perfectly. When it comes to sushi, you can't go wrong coming here. I suggest getting their black and red roll; it's their off the menu specialty sushi roll we always get. Hope you enjoy! read more

I am from Portland, OR and I enjoy some good sushi from time to time. Being on the opposite side of the country, I wasn't sure if I'd find a great place in Herndon so I decided to check Yelp. Kumo Sushi had some of the highest ratings in the area so I ordered some sushi to go and took it back to my hotel. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised - the sushi was great! I have visited this place numerous times for lunch both alone and with company. This place is hands down a great place for a nice lunch experience. The quality of the food is great and the lunch deals are totally worth it. I have only ordered the sushi and I thought everything that I've had was great. The miso soup is really tasty especially on a cold day! (Don't even think of getting Harris Teeter sushi... stop next door at Kumo and get one of their lunch specials. 2 rolls for $9 or 3 rolls for $13. This includes a salad or soup.) read more

This review is for takeout. My husband had ordered some handrolls and sushi from this place. While he was waiting there for our order to get prepared, he saw one of the guys making sushi was constantly sneezing while preparing sushi. Spontaneous date night with the husband and we were in the mood for sushi. I happen to see this restaurant the other day after coming out of the yoga studio so I remembered and yelped it. Looked promising so we were on our way. The decor is nice and vibrant with the mood positive and friendly. It was a sea of couples as well. Our server David was very polite, knew the menu choices well, checked up on us often, gave us suggestions, and really looked out for us as customers. They do have an extensive roll selection if you are into rolls. We had the New York Roll, Yummy Roll, Spider Roll, and Shrimp Tempura roll. Since we're big sashimi eaters we had to order a few pieces. The Uni hit the spot for the both of us and the toro was worth the market price. With an order of sake and beer our bill came out to close to 100. Prices I felt were very reasonable especially for the sashimi. (It is better to get it sashimi style rather than sushi. You get an extra piece) The food was delicious and we'd definitely go back and having our exceptional service made it even more worthwhile. Quality of the fish is fresh and plentiful. Kumo Sushi is fantastic! Not only is the food extremely fresh but the staff is very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu.

They have some pretty elaborate and over the top presentation, which worried me because I thought they might be trying to compensate for poor sushi, but that simply wasn't the case. Really good and fresh sushi! We tried a couple of their special rolls (Eye of the Tiger, and a Thai roll whose name I can't remember). They were both really interesting and tasty. Good sake options too. A little on the modern and showy side, but overall a great sushi joint. read more

They aim to dazzle. The serving style is a little theatric (some have glowing volcanos on the plate with steam), the decoration is modern and fun, and the names of the speciality rolls are so funny. Fantastic and fresh sushi. Normal prices, normal service. I can only speak about the maki and sashimi - I didn't have anything that was cooked. read more

I give Kumo Sushi five stars hands down- I have never ever been disappointed. The boyfriend and I are HUGE sushi snobs... It's almost unbearable trying to find a new sushi "spot" in this area. We stumbled upon Kumo's a few months ago and since have gone at least a few times a month (if not a few times a week!) and it's just about the only place I'll go out to eat these days! I've recommended everyone I know and have been here for several birthday dinners as well. For starters, the food is fresh and the combination of flavors is DIVINE. If you are an adventurous eater, this place is for you. Second, the actual place and decor is beautiful and the presentation of the food is gorgeous to say the least. My friends and I come and order at least two of several different things on the menu (they can't believe how much a bunch of girls can eat :) haha) and they always, always bring us something on the house. Last time it was the red bean ice cream which is now my favorite ice cream in the WORLD. I describe it as the red velvet cake of the ice cream world. Delicious. I think I've ordered just about everything on the menu but my favorite rolls as of May 2011 are the beauty and the beast roll and red bull roll. Both came out smoking (dry ice) and glowing with LED lights and palm trees, etc... It's so beautiful we take several pictures every time. Needless to say I take everyone I know here and it is my go-to sushi place! My only complaint is how busy it's getting there lately but I guess that comes with there territory of an amazing sushi place in this area! Highly recommended. read more

'They' say a person eats with their eyes first, and the presentation of the sushi here is amazing. The restaurant itself is nicely decorated and welcoming. The staff is friendly and the Sushi masuta's really know their trade. If you're a fan of good sushi, sit at the counter and watch the masters at work. You will be impressed at their precision and the quality of the final product. I recommend this place to anybody who is in search of high quality sushi in the DC metro area. Finding good sushi here is difficult compared to New York, Philly (they have chef Morimoto there) or LA. But these guys are on par with the top places there and fairly priced. read more

Great sushi and food. They have a large variety of sushi they have invented and it is always delicious and fresh. It is more expensive than most sushi places but is worth it. If you're lucky, they will even give you some cool designs when plating the good, such as adding lights and fog. read more
