I'm actually shocked that, in all my perusing of Portland food spots, I'd never heard of Kuno before seeing it by chance in an Uber one day and deciding to investigate. This place is a food haven: small, cozy, affordable, and absolutely delicious. I came for dinner with my partner on a weekday evening, and it was totally empty except for one other party. The space is pretty small, but has a very quaint, homey atmosphere: think ambient lighting, darker wood, a simple menu. The service was fantastic. We were immediately welcomed in, and our waiter checked in on us often. We ordered the crab wontons to start, the Kuno chicken sandwich, and a fried rice that I now am forgetting the name of and can't locate on the online menu. We also ordered two cocktails. Everything came out hot and was absolutely delicious: you can just tell that the food here is made with love. The crab wontons were jaw-droppingly good -- I'll definitely be getting that again -- as was the fried rice, which had tender strips of chicken and that elusive wok hei that I've struggled to find in Portland restaurants. The fried chicken sandwich was great too, though smaller portioned. My partner and I tend not to order cocktails at restaurants, since so often you're getting three sips worth of a drink for something like $15, but Kuno's cocktails were such a treat. They were unique, tasty, complex, and actually sizable -- my cocktail kept me hydrated through the entirety of my entree, which is rare these days! I've driven down Cumberland Avenue countless times and somehow never noticed Kuno. It's an easy spot to miss -- definitely in "hole in the wall" territory --but it's one worth finding. On a recent snowy Saturday night, we were looking for a casual, affordable sit-down dinner. The challenge? It's Portland, so most places close by 9 pm. Kuno, open until 11 pm, was a welcome surprise. The restaurant has a cozy, neighborhood feel with plenty of free street parking nearby. When you walk in, the bar area is the first thing you see. It almost feels like the bar's the whole restaurant, but there's a small dining room tucked in the back. The bar itself seemed like a great spot to grab a cocktail and a bite, and I'd come back just for that. The menu isn't huge, but it has a solid variety. I stole a bite of my husband's spicy chicken sandwich, and it was easily a 10/10. The bread was fluffy, the chicken thick and juicy, and the slaw on top gave it a yummy twist. My ground chicken with basil came with a crispy fried egg, but it leaned a little salty. I also assumed the egg would be sunny-side up, which was on me. I'd still order it again, but the chicken sandwich was the clear winner. We also got a few apps: the wings were juicy with a generous portion, the pork dumplings were delish, and the crab wontons, while tasty, leaned more cream cheese than crab filling. Drinks-wise, they offered cocktails, beer, and even full bottles of wine; we ordered a $40 bottle of Italian red. Our two entrées, three apps, and wine came to about $110, which felt reasonable for the portions and quality, especially given the area. We left happy and will definitely be back when we're in the mood for no-frills Thai food. Stop by on a night out while visiting friends in the Portland area, and I was quite impress with my experience. My friend said the spot is popular for take out, and he hadn't actually sat down for dinner before. I can confirm that during our visit there was constant traffic of pick up orders. This is definitely a hidden gem in Portland. The restaurant/bar space is relatively small and cozy. We sat at the bar and the owner took good care of us. Small restaurant away from the hectic main area that packs a punch! The ambiance is relaxing, not much space at all. The bar seats 8 and there are a few additional tables in the back. What a hidden gem! I found Kuno when I was vacationing in the area and was interested in trying some good Asian food. Kuno meets the mark! I enjoyed sitting next to the window and people watching! My server was very friendly and quick. He catered to my needs and provided prompt, but attentive service. I ordered the Korean Wings, Pork Dumplings, and Pad Thai. The wings were some of the best Korean wings I've ever had. I am usually suspicious when it comes to Korean chicken wings, because they're usually far too spicy and coated in too much breading. Kuno has the perfect balance! The breading was light and didn't take away from the star of the show: the sauce! The sauce is spice forward but ends with a sweetness that is incredibly cohesive. They make for a great appetizer alongside the pork dumplings. Those seared dumplings are SO yummy and I enjoyed the dipping sauce it came with. The taste reminds me of soup dumplings. It has a rich, velvety, umami flavor that is to die for. The Pad Thai was also great! Not as spicy as I'd expected, and came with WAY more bean sprouts than I'd hoped. However, the flavor is delicious and it's a huge portion size. I added shrimp and chicken to mine, as it usually only has tofu. I highly recommend Kuno. It's a small menu but everything looked like solid options. I really like almost everything on the Kuno menu and have followed them from their very first roving food truck. Once they settled their food truck into the lot next to their new space, I continued to be a fan. They serve generous portions of delicious food. I love their tamarind wings, chicken sandwich and brussel sprouts! Here are my two current concerns: 1. Their hours, they seem to be open for a very limited number of hours and only on some days. I have driven all the way over, during listed "open" hours and they have been closed 2. I don't mind a limited menu, and Kuno makes the things they make super well, but sometimes, the menu may just have 4 choices, I would urge them to expand the menu, even just a little. read more

My tiny COVID POD meets occasionally at outdoor spots in our yards and the tables of outdoor dining, to make an attempt at feeling semi normal during these pandemic times. Kuno was one of the discoveries that made a chilly, Maine evening, feel like a little bit of magic. There menu has maybe 10 items on it, but everything was a winner, from the Fried Chicken Sandwich to the Brussel Sprouts. Despite it being a food truck, the essence of the spot made it more like a hip outdoor spot in the middle of a big city. Think courtyard in a lesser known part of Brooklyn. They are working on their brick and mortar, which is the spot where their food truck is parked, but during the pandemic, the food truck seems like a good spot to stay in.
