Wonderful Japanese restaurant in Lake Forest. Modern, clean interior with great lighting and lots of seating. Quick and friendly service! Ordered appetizers to share - polpo and gyoza were fantastic. Chirashi entree was my favourite! Great slices of fresh fish with a nice bed of rice and lots of vegetables - the daikon is surprisingly good. Really loved my meal and enjoyed the ambience. I went back a second time with my daughter before Covid -19 hit! I had some amazing miso soup and fried rice which they suggested a smaller portion for my daughter. Of course I got a few sushi rolls and they were great! The service here is amazing! The owner is so nice! read more

We went to that new sushi place on a Monday night. It was late, we asked for a table of 4. We were very nicely greeted by the team. The location is a little difficult to find but it worth it. The atmosphere is really nice, a beautiful and inviting bar in the entrance and a cozy room with comfy furniture. Great service, impressive sake list. Sushi are great and lot of other option are available. Try the fried rice, full of flavor not greasy as it can be in other places. Just go, you will not be disappointed. read more

I have been eating sushi for many years in the north shore and surrounding areas. There is nothing, NOTHING, that compares to this restaurant. The quality and taste of the sushi here, especially those hand rolls, are unrivaled with. Aside from the sushi, the other entrees like steak is phenomenal. I have a second home in Miami and even the prestigious top sushi spots there fail to live up to this level. The customer service is amazing, as your treated like family by the owners. The atmosphere is very cozy, with a great outdoor patio. The head chef and owner, Joe, is truly an artist, being able to make even custom dishes you may request. There is no other sushi restaurant my family and I go to, and no other restaurant in general we choose over this place. If you live in lake forest or anywhere near the north-shore and haven't heard about this place, I can only tell you your missing out. 100/10 stars! read more

One of the best sushi places I have ever been to! Love the atmosphere, the food, and the service. Always the freshest sushi! We ordered about 10 signature maki rolls for our table of 6 plus 2 appetizers and the owner (whom we loved btw) recommended the seared garlic tuna and it was amazing. We loved all her recommendations, they were all spot on! My favorites are definitely the Kuro Bistro, White Dragon and Blue Man rolls! They have a great selection of drinks as well. There is literally nothing to dislike about Kuro Bistro in Lake Forest! The service is impeccable, the venue is open and comfortable and the sushi is by far, the freshest I have ever had. My husband and I had dinner there recently, my first time and my husband's second time. At the suggestion of one of the wonderful servers, we started with the tuna carpaccio. It was amazingly flavorful and you could honestly taste the ocean in each bite. My husband also had the Tokosu, which is octopus sashimi in a delicious sauce with sliced cucumbers. He loved it!! We followed this up with a delicious selection of nigiri and sashimi. I had a soft shell crab roll, which was wrapped in delicate, thin seaweed paper. It melted in my mouth and I ended up ordering another one. I also had a spicy raw scallop handroll. Again, the wrap was perfect and the scallop was juicy and full of flavor. We sampled the salmon, surf clam, yellowtail and also the Red Dragon signature maki roll. Everything was absolute perfection! Our server, as well as other staff were attentive and always made sure we had everything we needed. We drove 30 minutes to Lake Forest, and we'd do it again in a heartbeat. Food was good no issues there. However, we ordered for pickup and had to wait over 15 minutes. The female owner began yelling at a delivery driver about how they rip her off or some such thing. Then she pointed at me and began to lecture me forgetting I was just there for pickup. When I said excuse me, she walked in the back and didn't come out for several minutes. Ordered delivery from here last Friday and was super impressed! Everything was well packaged and really enjoyed the sushi, asparagus wrapped beef, & teriyaki salmon. We got the rainbow roll, red dragon, crazy salmon, and kyuro roll. Only thing is I wish the rice came with the teriyaki salmon! Kuro Bistro is a small yet beautiful shop tucked away right in the middle of town. I originally came here while picking up an Uber Eats order, and came here on my own time out of curiosity later on. The price was originally a bit daunting, as is the price at every unknown restaurant. But by god, this is one of the best places to get sushi for the next 20 miles around. Their sashimi and nigiri is fresh and delicious while beautifully prepared, as are all the maki rolls. Their hibachi options are all tender and delicious, from the salmon to the filet mignon. Beyond the food, I have not had a single bad interaction with the employees. (Though to be fair, I have never dined in.) My favorite employee is Petey (I think that's how you spell his name, sorry if otherwise!) This young man is constantly courteous, hard working, and respectful. If you order from this place, I assure you you will love every dish they serve. read more

The Sushi is made of excellent ingredients- tuna, crab, scallops all excellent. Avocado was perfectly ripe. But the way the sushi is rolled is poor. Every time we have gotten take out (2-3x), the rolls fall apart as soon as we pick it up with chop sticks. Quality of food is enough to make us look past how poorly Kuro rolls them. read more

What a great sushi/Japanese restaurant in downtown Lake Forest! Great ambience and decor--upscale and sleek, yet approachable. Perfect place for date nights, larger gatherings, or even a night on the town (nice looking bar). Menu has some terrific options that goes beyond your typical sushi bar. One highlight we noticed on several dishes was their homemade teriyaki sauce, which has a fantastic flavor and is not to be missed. Service is excellent, particularly the owners who are clearly proud of their establishment and seek to welcome all guests--we saw a bunch of returning patrons (promising for a newer restaurant), along with first-timers. My wife was able to customize a vegetarian roll, which she said was one of the best she has ever had. We are already making plans for a return visit! Prices reasonable too! read more

Worst, slowest overpriced sushi I've ever had in Lake County. We ordered maki rolls: Woodland, Doki Doki, California and Shrimp Tempura. My son liked his shrimp tempura roll, hence the second star, but the others were not good. Like, at all. And the Doki Doki was inedible (brown, over-ripened avocado and fish that was mealy mush). As for curbside pickup, we waited an additional 15 minutes past the promised pickup time which only added insult to injury. read more

I don't know if we just had a rare not great experience..... But we sadly did not have a great experience with Kuro Bistro. We have been dying to try this place since it opened and finally decided to try delivery with Uber Eats. We tried quite a few different things and had a special request on the rolls for no mayo that they mostly accommodated (we called ahead of time and they told us how to write it in and said absolutely no problem, so that was very nice), except for one special request they didn't. One of the rolls didn't have the option to add avocado on the Uber eats app, so I asked in the comments if we could add avocado. Apparently the answer is no because they didn't. For the appetizers, they kept all of the sauces on the side in their own containers which was great and easy for us to do. Everything was packaged very well, nothing spilled and everything was very well contained. We got the salmon carpaccio which is one of my favorite things of all time but this one was terrible and I don't recommend it. The definition of carpaccio is very thinly sliced meat, and this carpaccio was literally just huge chunks of sashimi salmon thrown on a plate. This was not carpaccio at all. It was very off putting to have such giant pieces with the sauce, the flavor of the fish seemed off but I'm not even sure because it was just so unruly. We also got the Hamachi Ponzu which also had the super thick cut, but the Hamachi was also super fishy and inedible. I wouldn't get either of those again. If you read the menu, it says "pieces of sashimi" but I didn't even consider that they would leave them as giant chunks, I figured that just meant super thinly sliced sashimi for the carpaccio and a little thicker for the hamachi. Nope. The beef tataki had excellent flavor and was delicious but had a few chewy/inedible bites so that was unpleasant. Overall though, that was one of the best things we had and I would order it again because the flavor was amazing. On to the rolls. All of the rolls were actually pretty good! There was one or two that were pretty great, the rest were just "good" but nothing absolutely amazing. If we were to order here again, I would just stick to the rolls and beef tataki. The rolls are super safe, we tried a few and would eat every single one again. Overall, I wouldn't say this is the best sushi restaurant in the area, as much as we sssooo wanted it to be, but the rolls are decent, we would probably choose another restaurant over this one, but we might try again to see if we can have a better experience. read more

We only just managed to get to this relatively new restaurant (5 mos old) the day before the statewide closing of in-house dining in Illinois for 2 weeks due to Cov-19. We came and got a to-go order at lunch. The staff was quick and helpful and the ambiance was lovely and welcoming. It was a little hard to find in a courtyard of businesses and offices but we were told a new sign is coming soon so that should help direct customers to their front door. The food was excellent. We both had miso soup. We shared the Hawaiian tacos and Crazy Salmon Maki. Everything was outstanding! We are definitely coming back for more take-out and, when this state imposed ban is lifted, we plan on coming and dining at this location. Great stuff! read more

LOVED the restaurant that was there previously. Weird young inexperienced staff. They seemed to have no clue what they are doing. They tried to serve a whiskey in a martini glass! LOL what!
