Kurtis has worked on my skin care issues since 1996, as he has worked alongside several dermatologists. I have had some serious challenges -- when I first met Kurtis in '96, I had just been informed that my long term HIV infection had progressed to "full-blown AIDS." Among the many manifestations of that, I had numerous skin problems. Kurtis was well-versed in these and was able to help me with solutions that were effective but did not have as bad side effects as they otherwise might have. Being of Celtic and Mediterranean descent, I also inherited very oily skin, a tendency toward acne and rosacea, and difficulty with the ongoing growth of pores, cartilage, etc. Over the years, Kurtis has helped me manage these issues always taking into consideration the impact any treatment may have on my ongoing regimens, on my reconstituting immune system, and on long-term effects. He has also found and removed small skin cancers before they became problematic. To my surprise, I lived and got older. Metabolic syndrome and age helps to cause deeper creases and more hollow looks than I was comfortable with. Kurtis helped with that, too. On top of it all, I developed a case of benign tumors on my forehead, and Kurtis has been helping over the past few years to resolve those as best as can be done. In all these years, Kurtis has been warm, professional, friendly, helpful, and diligent. He also takes care to educate me on what's happening with my skin and the options available when I need info. I have never been displeased with Kurtis's work. Just a final comment on other reviews here: Good office staff are hard to find. Especially at 45 Castro. Elsewhere, staff seem to be far more customer service oriented. read more

I saw Kurtis for a minor dermatology visit. While waiting, I noticed how patients and his staff chatted like long time friends. Always a good sign when going to a new doctor's office. Once in, Kurtis saw me after a short wait and got right to work. He explained the instrument he was going to use and checked periodically if I was experiencing any discomfort during the procedure. Shortly later, we were done and he then went on to recommend some sun screens and various places (from Whole Foods to Rainbow Foods) where I could buy them. For a guy with long term skin problems from severe acne to folliculitus, it is diff to find a derm that will actually listen. We know about our own bodies, yet some docs want to diagnose you from a textbook. Take it from a guy who has going to a derm since the age of 13 (now 50), I know a good one from one who just doesn't care. Kurtis cares, listens and is empathetic to my problems. For most of us that have these problems, although not serious or life threatening, they hit us in our self esteem and confidence. I've found Kurtis to genuinely care, work closely with me to do whatever it takes to help me deal with my problems and be flexible enough o change regiments to find the right combination of treatments that work. Been to many derms at UCSF. No comparison. Not completely cured, but managing much better with Kurtis. I see many rave reviews here. Kurtis Opp is immoral, an opportunist, and does harm. The RX he did provide was worthless, and when I returned twice, he lied both times (which was confirmed by another doctor).Suffice it to say that he made an appointment for me for a procedure, after clinic hours, when no doctor was present, no charting, no medical waiver to sign, no sterility, etc. He stated that I should come in and sit in the outpatient lobby, and he would come down to bring me up. I cannot be the only person that he has seen for "under the table", shady, work. For the good of the community, do not support him in any way. read more

I owe my health to Kurtis. I had a strange spot on my face that looked worrisome. I shopped around for a dermatologist, found a different one, and got a biopsy. She said I was fine, though I felt she messed-up the biopsy. I went to another dermatologist for a second opinion. She also said I was fine. I didn't believe them. I went to Kurtis. Within 30 seconds, he said I probably had cancer, the previous biopsy was done incorrectly, and he did another biopsy on the spot. Bingo: cancer. If I hadn't had gone to Kurtis, who knows what my life would have been like. Fast forward six years and, during a routine skin check, he does another biopsy. Cancer again, this time a far more serious type. Because he found it so soon, my cancer didn't spread and I'm (once again) cancer free. Don't repeat my mistake. Go to Kurtis first. read more

First of all, I don't know who that Todd A. is who gave the staff such a trashy rating. I've been to this office maybe 5x in the past year and every single time, not ONE person on the staff was rude to anyone. The receptionist is always incredibly friendly and every office assistant I dealt with was friendly, helpful and knowledgable. I have a feeling Todd A. had a bad day and is blaming Kurtis' staff for it. Kurtis is without a doubt, the best dermatologist I've ever had. I've been seeing him for a couple years now and I can't express enough what a relief it is to go to him when I have a problem. He always knows exactly what's wrong and the precise remedy for whatever skin problem I've had. He's also really funny, incredibly friendly and personable, thoughtful, considerate, helpful and doesn't have a shred of that "doctor attitude" you can find in so many doctors. His office is incredibly busy all the time and amazingly enough, I've never had to wait more than 5 minutes for my appointment either. I've been to many places over my lifetime where you'd wait in the waiting room for 1/2 hour - 45 min because the office was behind but I've never experienced that in Kurtis' office. I have been to many dermatologists- as I have had skin cancer- and for the most part they are usually weird and old fashioned. I was referred to Kurtis and what a breath of relief! He surveyed my mole very thoroughly and professionally, and helped me with a couple of issues I had. He knew the procedure of my stupid insurance company and I was able to have 3 moles removed. When it comes to skin cancer- conservative is a blessing...take it from me who has had to deal with skin cancer before. I found the office staff to be fine, I didn't have any problems with them at all. Their quality services come at a very fair price for someone like me who pays most medical expenses out of pocket. I have seen Kurtis Opp for nine years and his skin exams are very thorough. He has a good eye for noticing the need for further scrutiny or treatment. Two years ago August, Kurtis noticed and biopsied a small bump on my back which pathology identified as an aggressive carcinoma known as Merkel Cell. Due to his early detection and stern prescription to get immediate treatment; I have just passed my two year anniversary of clean PET scans. Looks like I beat it! Kurtis is a great dermatologist that I have been seeing for years. His office, however, is the problem. Like a previous reviewer said, they milk the office visits. The office manager, Rudy, informed me that it is Brown & Toland's policy that I make two office visits each time I come in for the same treatment I receive each time I come. Unfortunately for Rudy, when we conferenced Brown & Toland, the representative completely refuted that claim and Rudy had to admit that their office is simply unwilling (not unable) to submit for the authorization before the first office visit, even when there is the history of the same treatment every time in my chart. It is pretty clear that this office knows that they can bill for two office visits if they refuse to submit the authorization prior to my first office visit. I will find another dermatologist. Thanks for your complete lack of help, Rudy. I can recommend Kurtis, but be aware this is how the office does business and the staff is dicourteous and unprofessional. read more

I have been going to see Kurtis for years. He is thorough, caring and professional. His assistant Rudy is always welcoming and helpful as well. Even if my insurance plan at the time does not cover him I will even go there as a private pay patient because I feel most comfortable there and I know it is worth it to get the best care. He is very patient to answer all of my questions and explain treatment options, including less expensive over the counter options when that is possible. This man saved my life. I have thoroughly read the negative reviews regarding staff, and fees, etc. To me, it sounds like these people feel they should be entertained, complemented, and reassured about whatever issues they have, which I am sure they have with any service provider that doesn't blindly kiss their rump just for making an appearance. (to the guy with the non STD penis rash - no one cares, including Kurtis, trust me, get a clue) - If you are over 40, Dermatology is like Dentistry - go every 6 months, and if Kurtis wants to burn something off your face, let him do it. If he prescribes a cream another doctor later calls "weak" maybe he was taking the less invasive route initially. That's to the guy blathering on about PPO cost, etc. Be thankful you have healthcare. This guy is quiet, polite, and a sweet person. If you have issues with the staff, take it up with the business owner which is Ellison. Kurtis is Stanford trained, very smart, and very thorough. He will tell you the truth, not what you expect to hear. He sits on many boards that feature MD's, so he is no run of the mill PA. He knows skin, and very well. In 2010 I went in with a rash on my leg. It had been a couple years since my last visit. As he was taking care of the leg, he noticed a darker pigment on my scalp, and asked if he could biopsy it. I thought the same thing, all of these dermatologists want to charge money. It came back as early stage melanoma, so early, in fact, that it was Stage 0, and I was able to be completely cured. Another year and I would have not been so lucky. The mole was small, innocuous, and looked like any other mole. But Kurtis saw and felt something different, and therefore saved my life. That in itself speaks to competency, which is all that really matters. Take your bedside manner all day long, I don't care - I want competency and knowledge. Period, end of story. In my book, he saved my life, and will always be the best dermatologist in SF. read more

On the whole I am not a fan of derm docs. Having been in public health for many years I find their practices to be a bit opportunistic. However - my primary care doc sent me to Kurtis after I had a rash that wouldn't go away. For a year! After Kurtis, it went away - after 2 weeks of the right identification and treatment. He will recommend select OTC products when that's all that is needed. Also - the other practices at 45 Castro speak highly of him - and that says a lot. I've been going mr Opp's dermatology services for several years. I try to be informed so I can ask good questions and always leave knowing much more than when having arrived. Me. Opp is attentive to all needs, in my case sebaceous hyperplasia, mostly, and offers options for treatments when possible and gives price ranges for these possibilities. It's a very relaxed and private and friendly atmosphere with no pressure. Have never had negative results. Reminder: get a full body skin exam every couple years. Not all trips to the Dr. are the same. After having a condition for over 6 years and being treated by a handfull of "professionals" with mild to no results. Kurtis did the usual exam that I was had come accustom to, but amazingly he actually dealt with my issue and for the last few years be going in merely for check ups.
