Went in around 9PM on a Tuesday night and there were a decent number of tables occupied. It was quiet, but still vibrant enough to not make it an awkward dining experience. We ordered two Sapporos and two Bowls of ramen. The beers never came. I asked and the staff said they were down a bartender. Completely understand except the beers were literally not getting poured. We did watch a bartender pour a beer with 3/4 of the glass full of foam . After we saw that, got up, let the staff know we were leaving. Go only if you want bad service. read more

Kusshi has a good aesthetic in the entrance/bar area that I wish extended to the walls in the main dining area, which are otherwise empty. From my visits, it looks pretty easy to get a table at night without any issue. Attention from the server was a bit sparse without prompting. It took about 20-25 minutes for my order to come in and 5 minutes for my drink to be served. I ordered a standard maki tuna roll and two specialty rolls (Troy and Spicy Mango). I can't say that either specialty roll was especially great. And the tuna maki was wrapped with just enough seaweed to reach from end to end, so it would come apart pretty easily I'd you weren't careful. The house cocktails I've had here are very nice and not necessarily common finds. The prices are pretty standard for the area (take that as you will). Overall, the food is fine, but I wouldn't say that the price of everything matched up to the experience. Definitely not the best value, but it's there. read more

Not much of a Japanese experience. Very loud hip hop and Latin music (why?), hard to talk. More like a bar ambience. The server was very attentive and quick. Chicken katsu was ok, but why drench it in sauce rather than serve the sauce on the side properly? It was goopy and thick like it had escaped from Panda Express. The tempura was ... deep fried shrimp and vegetables. It did not have the delicate crunch of tempura. At least the batter was not too thick. The portions are insanely large- easily could be cut in half and sold as a complete meal. Aside from the music, it was comfortable and attractive, and in a nice walking district. Pentagon Row is another great addition to the Kusshi family. I've worked and lived in the area in the past. About time a quality sushi spot has hit Pentagon Row. I love how theres always Groupon, IG gift card or event specials throughout the month. The happy hour is one of the best in the area. I always order their wings, rock shrimp, spicy tuna and salmon rolls. Don't forget their popular seared salmon belly as well. I've ordered take out here in the past and fish quality is always high. The seats by the bar are always filled, but they also have a large dining area as well if you're here with a large group. Don't be discouraged by the parking here. Seriously, Asia Bistro literally 20 paces away is so far superior. This place was a disappointment. I really don't get it why everyone else likes it so much. Portions were small and flavor and fish quality were mediocre. The $16.50 special roll my boyfriend ordered was almost the same size as an $8 classic maki roll, just with a little more stuff on top, and, while sushi has gotten a lot more expensive everywhere because of inflation, their classic makis - e.g., salmon avo - were still smaller, less dense, and more expensive than they are at most places we go to. The few places we go that are similarly or more expensive have better quality sushi. Plus, the salmon cuts had a lot of chewy fat and sinew instead of velvety orange meat, the rolls were too loosely constructed, and the portion of fish inside of an already small maki roll was small relative to the size of the roll. To be fair, the quality of the salmon at one of our once favorite sushi restaurants has gone down dramatically, and we are coming to notice less and less salmon on sushi menus generally, so maybe the salmon thing is systemic. But if you can't have good salmon...why even bother? I had four items - salmon avocado maki, hamachi jalapeno maki, shrimp tempura maki, and tamago sashimi, and walked away feeling hungry. My boyfriend left hungry, too, and we ended up heading over to Nighthawk and splitting a whole cheese pizza. This was after spending $63 on food, tax and tip (we only drank water) at Kusshi. At Asia Bistro we usually spend less, enjoy ourselves more, and never have to have a second meal afterwards in order to feel satisfied. We often leave Asia Bistro with to-go boxes. I also didn't love the menu selection. The more affordable classic rolls were a little bit more expansive than a lot of other places, but the specialty rolls were all either California rolls, otherwise stuffed with fake crab, or stuffed with spicy tuna. If you don't like fake crab or spicy tuna - which is typically ground up and mushy - you will not be able to find anything on the specialty rolls menu (this happened to me). There was almost nothing with salmon in it, though I guess that was a godsend since the salmon we got was poor quality. These are also fairly cheap ingredients as far as maki goes, which makes it harder to justify the fact that most of their specialty rolls were in the $15-$17 range, with some going as high as $18 or $20. Service was adequate, I suppose, except that they forgot the wasabi on multiple plates so we had to ask for it, and the items came out in no particular order so my boyfriend got his sushi way before I got mine. I thought ambiance was non-existant. It felt sterile and out of a box. We didn't try any of the non-sushi dishes so can't comment on them. We saw them go by and they looked good but portions also looked super small, especially on the gyoza (which is lolskates because we buy frozen gyoza at Trader Joe's all the time and when we cook them they're big and delicious so why would you pay more to eat them here?). Literally the only things I was impressed with were that 1) they had a yellowtail (hamachi) and jalapeno roll in the classic rolls menu, which I haven't seen before except as a non-maki appetizer, and I thought that was innovative, though the roll itself was meh, and 2) my tamago sashimi was served with a whole shiso leaf, which I ate, because shiso is delicious. IMPORTANT: If you come, do NOT sit in a booth. Most of the tables were freestanding or high tops, but there are a handful of booths and we had the bad luck of sitting in one as they are the most uncomfortable booths we have ever sat in. They're really tight with very little space between the back of the booth and the table. The cushion is very flat and upright, with no curve, but it doesn't go all the way down, exposing the wood part of the booth at your lower back. Meanwhile, because there's so little seat room your butt is basically shoved all the way back in the cushionless part, while the cushion is pushing your upper back forward, so you are literally being forced to hunch over unless you sit on the edge of your seat ramrod straight which, again, is hard to do because the booths are so tight and you are so close to the table. Both my boyfriend and I complained to each other the whole meal about how uncomfortable we were and I can't help but wonder if this is part of why we had such a miserable experience. One of my biggest restaurant pet peeves is uncomfortable seating - did the owner/designer not bother to actually sit down and test these out before using them? As we were leaving my boyfriend, who is way more easygoing than I am, told me "we don't need to come here again." I agree. Asia Bistro has been one of our go-to sushi restaurants for years. It is well-made, reasonably priced, has better portions, is more comfortable, has better service, also has a full-service bar, and is a much chiller and cozier vibe. read more

Very accommodating! They were able to take our large party of 10 before they closed around 9:30. The servers didn't rush us and were very pleasant. One of our guests asked if one of the rolls could be made with smoked salmon instead of salmon and they were able to accommodate without a problem. Everything we had was worthy enough to be shared around the table. I ordered otoro from the main menu and listen, it melted in my mouth. The food here was decent. Started with a crunchy roll which tasted great. However, it was served as 5 huge pieces that barely fit into my mouth. Might be personal preference, but I would rather have 6-8 pieces of a slightly thinner roll that is easier to eat and isn't padded with quite as much cucumber. The tonkotsu ramen was also good, but by no means anything special. The broth wasn't super flavorful and the noodles were pretty think and lackluster. The food here is decent! After ordering 2 starters (shishito peppers and takoyaki) and four different sushi rolls to share among four people, my boyfriend and I were still hungry. The rolls weren't anything particularly special to me. The were okay, standard. We then ordered the chicken teriyaki which was pretty good (the rice served was minimal, a small bowlful, which didn't seem to fit the proportions of the chicken teriyaki (protein and veggies). Prior to the boat coming out, the chef sent out complementary seared salmon nigiri. DELICIOUS. Milks in your mouth. Usually chefs pick makes me extra nervous, in case I don't like the fish. Fortunately, I liked all fish on the boat but one. The salmon with truffle nigiri was my absolute favorite. There was also mackerel and otoro tuna nigiri. This place stands out from the rotating cast of restaurants in Pentagon Row. Its roomy / well designed, the food is delicious and portioned nicely (large), the servers are quietly attentive (refilling your glass without having to ask), very clean, and the playlist is awesome (sets the right mood). Try the udon noodle entree - it's large and so yummy! Btw, the entrance is deceivingly small - the back of the restaurant where you sit for dinner is much larger than it appears from the front of the restaurant. Also, there are three different landing spots so you can decide if you're on date-date, friendly bonding, buddy get together: sushi bar, bar-bar, and dinner seating. Tried this place out right after they opened. The cherry blossom roll was pretty good. We had spicy tuna and tuna scallion hand rolls. They were MASSIVE but tasted pretty good. The nigiri was also much bigger than fancier/traditional sushi restaurants. Overall, this place was OK. Service was slower than I'd like but I am assuming that was cause the place is so new. This is more of a casual/lunch sushi joint, rather than a fancy Omakase place. For casual sushi joints, I'd prefer other places. read more
