Rudy and his team did a phenomenal job on my hardwood floors, and I would definitely go back to him for any other flooring needs. Here's my story: My recently purchased condo was in need of a makeover and I was in search of a contractor who would not only give my hardwood floors a facelift (refinish), but also repair them. There was a section of my kitchen floor that was notably depressed (rotting subfloor) and bouncy. I interviewed about 6 different contractors, half of whom told me they were unable to isolate & repair the kitchen issue and recommended that I redo my entire floor completely. I was worried because I live in DC, and my building requires contractors to be DC licensed, meaning renovations would cost much more and I would have limited options. Well, Rudy of Kustom Floors was the fourth contractor I spoke to and the first to say his team could repair & replace the area to make it sturdy, seamless and smooth. He even promised to even out other areas of my floors that were crowning. I was relieved to know a spot repair was possible, and the remaining contractors I spoke to were also capable of the same repair. Ultimately though, I picked Kustom Floors, even though they were slightly more expensive than the other two options, because Rudy was so thorough, honest, and had such great attention to detail. He and his team also had the proper certifications in the industry, and that gave me a piece of mind (my biggest fear was to pay a lot of money for a crappy floor job and fall through the ceiling of the unit below). Due to some time constraints, I had this flooring project completed while I was on a two-week trip overseas, so I did not witness the work being done and cannot comment on the process. However, Rudy kept me posted on the work progress with photos and texts while I was gone. I very much appreciated that, especially when I was spending a lot of money on a big renovation project that I was not there to supervise. Rudy did not work on my flooring job, but it was nice to see that he was still involved. I returned from my trip about a week after my floors were completed, and I came home to what appeared to be a completely new condo. My condo looks so much bigger and brighter, and my floors have so much character to them, which I absolutely love. I paid to refinish my hardwood floors & kitchen repair, but man, it looks like I got completely new floors! I could not be happier or more grateful to Kustom Floors not only for the finished product, but the entire process of my bathroom renovations. I had two bathrooms completely remodeled, one of which was converted from a half bath to a full bath with a shower. There were a few things notable about Kustom Floors: They don't just do floors- obviously! They do everything- including entire home remodels! They are really easy and transparent to work with. Rudy offered consultation regarding designing within my budget during the planning process and continually throughout the project. I opted to procure most of the materials to keep costs down, but the crews assisted me in person at Home Depot (I didn't know a thing about grout, this set, bullnose, etc.) and hauled the load to my home in their truck. That was so helpful given I have a small car. The crews are fantastic and really talented. You could tell they took a lot of care to contain dust and they cleaned up afterwards. I expected to need a professional cleaning, but did not. They go above and beyond. They do not cut corners. They keep you informed throughout if anything was discovered or if they needed to vier from an original plan for whatever reason. It turns out the wall between my two bathrooms was a false wall. Not any more. My condo did not have an accessible water shut off, so they gave me one and added a discreet access panel. Not only structural details that the eye wouldn't see, but Rudy also had many aesthetic ideas to make the spaces seem larger: pocket doors, smaller tile, etc. They stuck to the timeline. This was huge as I needed to move into the home by a certain date. It's common for construction to take longer than expected, especially when you're building a new wall you didn't intend to, but the crews came on Saturday's if needed and finished the job on schedule. We are no strangers to working with Rudy and Kustom Floors, as we are in the final days of a three phase home remodeling. We have worked with this great company for each of these projects, and we would not consider any other contractor for this work. In this phase, we replaced our ceramic kitchen floors with hardwood, replaced a previously unexposed section of a sunroom floor that they installed almost 2 years ago, installed hardwood stairs, replaced 122 balusters, updated the newels with caps and bases, sanded and stained the handrails and newels to match the new stairs, and installed carpet in all of our upstairs bedrooms and hallway. Much of this work was quite the challenge, as our great room adjoins the kitchen, and the floors were refinished by Kustom Floors over 3 years ago. They are older floors (beveled), and the kitchen does not have the bevel, but Jimmy (who is a true craftsman and an extremely talented and patient man!), laid the floors beautifully and matched the stain perfectly. In addition, we removed a fireplace from the sunroom, which exposed the old ceramic flooring underneath. We had the floors in that room replaced 2 years ago, so the task was to remove the section we exposed, pull up some of the wood to create a seamless floor, and then sand and re-stain the entire floor to match the adjacent room. Mission accomplished - and we couldn't be happier! Our handrails were old and in great need of updating. The rail heights are unusual, but nevertheless, they cut all 122 balusters to the custom height and did an amazing job of installing them in a single day. Over the three years and three phases of working with Kustom Floors, we have depended upon Rudy's suggestions and expertise to help elevate our original vision to bring an elegance to our home. Rudy and his team did an excellent job with our new townhouse. We reached out to Rudy through a referral from our real estate agent. From our first time speaking to him, it was clear he's an expert in flooring, and unlike other contractors we met with, he came with many photos of previous work he had done in homes just like ours. We originally had thought Kustom Floors would only redo our floors and stairs, but Rudy gave us a very reasonable quote for all the additional work we had in mind (basement finishing, painting, various cleanup). We decided to contract Rudy's team for everything and we did not regret it. They completed a huge amount of work within our tight time constraints, and at no point did they cut corners on any details. Of course, our new floors are our favorite part of all the work Kustom Floors did for us. A member of our house experiences significant vertigo on floors with any unevenness. Rudy's team pulled up all of the flooring and plywood of our 1923 townhouse and reinforced the joists to make the floors perfectly level. In the basement, they leveled as much as they could using self-leveling fluid, at a price much cheaper than another estimate we had received. This leveling work resulted in many additional modifications (new front door threshold and adjusted stair riser height), but Rudy's team took care of all of that for us. They are masters at what they do with common sense to make sure everything works together properly. The installed floors look amazing, with Rudy's team taking care to cover all finished flooring and keep it spotless by the time we arrive. We were especially impressed with their work in our bathroom, where they managed to cut the tiles perfectly around an existing curved bathtub. We were extremely pleased with every aspect of working with Kustom Floors. They came highly recommended by a neighbor who was very happy with the hardwood floor restoration they did on their house. We contracted Kustom Floors to sand and refinish (darker stain) our oak hardwood floors, rebuild the old staircase, patch the hardwood floors in a few areas where we removed walls, and tile our entryway and bathroom. I can't stress enough how pleasant it was working with Rudy throughout the process. We contacted two other companies to receive quotes. The other two were extremely rigid on what they would or would not consider doing. For every item, Rudy gave us options, offered his suggestions based on experience, and ultimately worked with us to make sure we received the best quality product within our budget. From the beginning, Rudy was very helpful in guiding us through selecting materials. His crew did a great job of meeting the tight timelines we had for some of the work, but was also flexible with scheduling follow-on items that were dependent on other work being completed. Rudy frequently stopped by to check in on his crews and communicate with us on progress and details. Once everything was almost completed by his crews, Rudy personally came by to take care of the last few touches and make sure we were happy. As for price, I would say he is definitely not the cheapest (he actually told us that from the start), but you certainly get what you pay for. Based on previous experience with other contractors, I feel that Kustom Floors is extremely reasonable on price, once you factor in the quality product you get, the professional customer service, and the great communication from start to finish. Rudy, Jimmy, and their fantastic crew are to be complemented with as many STARS as I can! We recently finished a major floor renovation with this company, which included the entire downstairs as well as stairs, a new custom contemporary banister, and the master bedroom. The floors were sanded, treated, and stained with a glorious dark stain and poly protective layer. I am stunned at how beautiful my floors are! It absolutely has transformed our home. I was impressed with the initial consultation, which took about 1.5 hours. Rudy explained all the options for floor treatment, examined our current floors very carefully, made excellent suggestions for upgrading, and engendered great trust in his honesty and artistry. They started the job a week before we left the country on vacation, and did the dusty, dirty work while we were away. I had complete trust in this team. They returned after we had returned home to replace all the furniture (but not before they had placed protective felt on the bottom of EVERY LEG of furniture.) The new contemporary banister is a stunning work of craftsmanship. I had a question about one of the aspects of the banister. Rudy stopped by personally to explain it to me. They paid great attention to detail, including fitting beautiful new wood stained vents in place of the old metal ones. When we bought our house, we identified several projects that would make the house feel like home. Our top priorities were to have our hardwood floors refinished, have recessed lighting installed in our living room, and have a doorway reframed. We spoke with several contractors (all of whom came with high recommendations!) and were impressed by Rudy's knowledgeability, responsiveness and ability to tackle all of the projects we wanted to undertake. He invited us to see his home (which showcases his team's work), and we were impressed by his own design choices, and the quality of his work. While not the lowest quote we received, we felt his prices were competitive for the quality of the work he promised. We've now worked with Rudy & his team on a number of projects (we keep finding projects where we want his help!) and have several more slated for 2016. Overall, Rudy and his team did a wonderful job on our floors. They did meticulous work. We couldn't be happier. -I received several quotes for what I learned was a complicated job. Rudy's initial response was professional, detailed, and prompt. When he arrived for the consultation, he was thorough, examining our current floors carefully, and patiently answered many questions. He was clearly an expert and inspired confidence. -After hiring Rudy, he continued to promptly answer our many questions. He gave good advice about our options and worked within our tight timeline to provide personalized samples. He even completed some unexpected preparatory work on the floor with very little notice so that a plumber could complete a task that had to be done before the floors could be installed. Rudy didn't charge for this work, which took the better part of an hour. -Rudy paid close attention to every detail throughout the process. His quotes were accurate and he was straightforward about the costs of various options. He worked closely with a plumber and building maintenance staff to ensure he wouldn't damage pipes. The finer details, like corners and edges, were done meticulously. -The final product is incredible. Rudy and his team transformed our squeaky, squishy, and, in part, broken 90-year-old floor into a subfloor before installing new floors on top. Kustom Floors repaired and refinished the wood floors in our recently purchased home - 8 rooms, two hallways and one stairwell. We couldn't be happier with the experience. We had several estimates done, and the estimate from Rudy at Kustom Floors was by far the most detailed. Rudy took a lot more time with us than any of the other companies that came by, going over our floor room by room, pointing out issues that we hadn't noticed, talking to us about what it would mean for the long term health and look of our floors. His depth of knowledge about and passion for wood flooring is immediately obvious. He is a true craftsman. When we asked his opinion on a few different things in the house, he had a trove of photos from other jobs to illustrate various options and possibilities... and even showed us photos of the flooring work he had done in his own home (gorgeous, naturally!). We hired Kustom Floors LLC to re-finish most of the oak floors on the main level of our home and also to refinish the stairs to the basement and replace one small linoleum floor insider our basement back door. The quality of the work was exceptional. Before we left for vacation, we packed up the contents of shelves and other furniture. Kustom Floors prepped a small area of one floor with three different stains so we could choose one ourselves. During the two weeks we were away, Kustom Floors moved out all the furniture, made several small repairs to the oak floors, and completely refinished the oak floors on the main level of our home (except for one very new floor in one room) and installed the new linoleum in the basement. After we returned, Kustom Floors re-finished the stairs to the basement and took care of some minor details. Kustom Floors delayed the work on the basement stairs to allow us the opportunity to select a stain and otherwise have input into that part of the project. Kustom Floors gave us the information we needed to select the protective coatings for the floors and we chose the higher priced commercial grade water-based product. We are highly satisfied with the results. We can feel the grain of the wood in the floor and nothing feels like it is coated in plastic. Furthermore, the floors can be buffed and re-coated in the future without having to be sanded again. read more

We originally found Kustom Floors through the previous owners of our home, and thank goodness we did! We needed to replace some old hardwood floors that were not updated during the original owner's renovations, and Rudy and his team were great to work with. Rudy is very knowledgeable and takes time to listen to your questions and concerns. He provides his cell phone, and goes out of his way to be available to answer questions or concerns-- no matter the time of day. He stands by his service and products, and holds his team to the same standard. During the first project, they replaced about 650 sq. ft. of wood floor and painted four rooms, which was complete within a week or so. The final results were beautiful! I was so pleased, I have hired Kustom Floors to renovate our guest room and guest bath, as well as our laundry room. I have no doubt the final product will be as flawless as our new floors and paint. In addition, I was having a hard time finding a handyman to help with little projects around the house, so Kustom Floors came to the rescue. I told Rudy what needed to be done, and the next day while I was at work, his team came by and executed the items Rudy and I discussed. It was so effortless. We hired Kustom Floors to redo our basement from carpet to tile. Their workmanship was flawless and we couldn't be happier. Pros: the work is gorgeous. It's exactly what we wanted. Rudy is extremely thirough and you can tell when he walks through a room that he is detail-oriented and an expert. He is also great at setting expectations: he warned us in advance that our floors were extremely unlevel and that he would probably have to level them at added expense beyond a flat floor. This saved aggravation later. There was not a long wait to schedule and Rudy's team finished within the promised time window, which was awesome. The workers were professional and cleaned up after themselves so the work was as disruptive as possible. So you are aware: These aren't cons, just comments. You need to choose and source the material yourself, though Rudy will pass on his contractor's discount. This saves design fees but if you've never done it before, it can be a bit daunting. Rudy also was not the cheapest quote we got, but he was the most knowledgeable and we thought the quote was very fair. And while his team is very professional and always stayed on schedule, we weren't always up to date on the latest part of the project so we had to be proactive and ask. Overall, couldn't recommend highly enough. Would absolutely use them again. read more

Repaired and refinished 150 year old heart pine flooring in Historic Washington DC Church. All went wonderfully. Work had to be done in multiple phases so church services could still be held while the work progressed. Dust collection system was amazing. Very little dust was created during the sanding process. Rudy, the owner, listened carefully to what we wanted to have accomplished, how we wanted the work performed, and what our time constraints were. After understanding our need, he gave us a very fair quote (comparable with most others received but priced slightly less) and he finished the project before our deadline. This was a difficult job since the flooring was 150 years old and was in desperate need of restoration and refinishing. Soft spots are no longer "soft", broken boards were repaired or replaced, floor gaps were filled, and I believe the flooring is more sound now than when it was first installed in the 1860's. Numerous parishioners complement on how the refinished floors look. Rudy and his team were first class should be considered if you need flooring work. If you are a church needing wood flooring work call him first for a quote and come look at the final product in our church. read more

Kustom Floors really did an amazing, terrific and expert job installing hardwood flooring in my hallway, living room and dining room. I am so happy with the beautiful job that they did on my floors. My home is 94 years old, and the floors had settled in the dining room up against the wall and between the living room and dining room area. Some of the existing slats in the floor were loose and needed to be nailed down before the work could start. Rudy's team leveled the floor where it had settled in the dining room and living room and then reinforced the existing floor with nails and installed natural red oak flooring. Rudy's team restored life back into my floors. The rooms look so beautiful. He even installed an access panel with the same flooring natural red oak color over the existing access panel. I absolutely love the job that they did, and very well done. Rudy and his team are very professional and friendly. They respected my home. They took care in covering my furniture and moving it. I am absolutely delighted with my experience hiring Kustom Floors to refinish the wood floors of my townhouse in Burke. The red oak had not been refinished in a very long time and had large bevels between the boards that had trapped a significant amount of dirt over the years - in other words it looked awful. Rudy understood that we needed the work completed in a set timeframe while the house is prepared for sale. He discussed the various floor finish options so that the work could match the existing finish on the stairs (a different wood entirely) as closely as possible. His team completely sanded down the floors to remove the dirty bevels and laid down several different treatments and finishes for me to choose between, all fairly close to the color/finish match we needed. The work was completed on time and for the agreed price, and I received regular updates to the progress over the days the work was done. The end result is STUNNING - the refinished floors with the replaced quarter rounds (also provided by Kustom) look like they have been newly installed and not like the 1981 vintage that they are. I cannot recommend them enough if you need your floors redone. read more

I was very pleased with the work performed by Kustom Floors. We had received many quotes to replace a 6' by 10' portion of hardwood flooring in our library which was damaged by a flood and I chose Kustom Floors to perform the repair because I was very impressed with the owner, Rudy and his explanation of how his company would perform the repair to blend in the replaced wood flooring with the rest of the undamaged flooring. Custom Floors arrived to start the job on time and completed the job within the allotted time. They moved all the furniture out of the library and replaced the water damaged wood. They sanded the entire library floor and finished it with a stain that matched the floor in the rest of the house. Even though some of the damaged wood had to be removed from beneath a built-in bookcase, they removed the wood without damage to the bookcase. They also installed a transom between the wood floor in the library and the floor in the adjoining room which nicely demarcated the refinished flooring from the flooring in the adjoining room. Overall, we were very pleased with the work done by Kustom Floors and would highly recommend them. read more

We have hired Rudy and his excellent team twice and have been impressed with the results both times. When I wanted to freshen up the scuffed, dull, pale colored parquet floors in my first house (a real fixer-upper in the Historic Distric of Takoma Park), what these guys did completely transformed the home. In my current home, they re-stained and finished two floors of the house as well as installing hardwood handrails on our two staircases (stained to match the floor). Rudy has very good instincts and advised me well when I wanted a grey finish I had seen in a design magazine. He chose the stains that he thought would give me the best result, sampled them on my own floor and consulted with me about the samples before proceeding with the job. The floors and the handrails look beautiful. Rudy will impress you with his professionalism and the pride he takes in the work his company does. He's a friendly, hard-working guy who knows a LOT about floors, and sincerely wants you to be happy with them. Rudy and his team did an absolutely excellent job redoing our floors and repainting our new condo. I received three different quotes for this work, but when Rudy came over to talk to me and my husband about what he and his team could do, they were immediately the clear choice. Rudy knows wood really well, and was able to talk us through what different options he could offer us to get us exactly what we were looking for. I has a pretty specific idea of what I wanted, especially for the floors, and the two other contractors we spoke with didn't fully grasp it at all. Rudy got it immediately, and showed me various wood and seal options that could achieve exactly the look I was going for. Our new floors are absolutely gorgeous. I was desperately in need of someone good to repair a one inch hole in my hardwood floor made by a repairman from another company. From a company's point of view this was a small job. From my point of view, it was a huge problem as to whether my floor would ever look good again and also whether, in making the repair, more damage would be done. Rudy immediately agreed to help me. He gave me the correct wood to take to my house so that it would be the same temperature as the wood floors at the time of the repair. He worked me in within two days of my call. He came personally, as did his employee, Will. Both took great care with my floor. They did the minimum necessary so that there was no further damage. They carefully tried to match the original wood and did a good color match. Rudy made two trips, both at the beginning and at the end of the repair. They clearly cared and made an effort even though this was really to help me, and not a large job for their company. I will go to them for all flooring needs in the future.
