I cannot count the amount of times we've driven past Kyo Matcha & all of the new businesses that have opened on this block. All new & super hyped on social media. Finally we were able to stop in to see what the hype is all about around Kyo Matcha's offerings. They are a Japanese cafe chain that specializes in matcha desserts and drinks. Today, we tried their ice cream: matcha mixed with milk favored ice cream in a cup with a cone & hojicha mixed with their flavor of the month, which was ube! Also in a cup with a cone. At $7/each, their price is very similar to Matcha Cafe Maiko's soft serve price! Thoughts: Flavors of the ice cream were okay. Did not "wow" me & I found that my ube/hojicha combo was a bit too sweet for my liking. The hojicha also tasted a lot like burnt chocolate. Unfortunately, I could not get myself to finish it. I would come back again to try their other menu items though! Their drinks look good. Matcha Cafe Maiko is still my favorite when it comes to matcha & ube... they're unbeatable (for me), for now. Thank goodness the line has died down since it has opened - every time I passed by for a solid month, there was a line out the door. Once, I even stood in it for 45 minutes before realizing that they were out of milk ice cream, but now the line is a lot more manageable. There's a lot of really pretty desserts and drinks on their menu, but I opted for the milk ice cream, which was something I've generally been wanting to try for a while. Milk ice cream ($7.00) - First, the menu says that the milk ice cream is $6.50 but when I got to the front of the line I put my order in on the machine and it said that it was $7.00, so that was a bit strange. Other than that, it was very easy to use the machine and it told me a number that I waited to be called out to collect my food. The ice cream itself was very creamy, and didn't exactly taste like vanilla, which I guess is why it's called "milk" flavor. That being said, it was a really nice and sweet but not to sweet creamy flavor, and I enjoyed it a lot. The price being different was a bit strange, and I'm not sure I can justify $7 for a single cone, but I'm glad I tried it. Overall, 4/5 - it was a nice treat and I'm happy I finally tried milk ice cream, but with the current price and even with a 10 minute wait or so, it doesn't feel like I'll be back for the ice cream. read more

Finally got to experience Kyo Matcha and it did not disappoint! Since this place opened, there is always a line out the door...literally all day! People have been excited for this place and for good reason! They obviously specialize in all things matcha, from matcha lattes to soft serve + floats to bubble tea and slushes to cakes/pastries. Definitely a matcha-loving foodie's dream! I tried the matcha latte with soymilk, which was nice to have a dairy-free option compared to some of the otherwise dairy-based desserts. There is an option to add in toppings like boba, red bean, or mochi, as well and even matcha floats (latte + soft serve which seem to be a very popular item). I also shared the matcha layer crepe cake and it was delicious! A great balance of sweetness but letting the matcha flavors shine through. Would highly recommend!! What is nice about all of the drinks is that you can alter the sweetness level so if you want a classic sweet bubble tea, there is something for you, but if you are also craving a matcha latte with little/no sweetness added, you can have that too! Of course they have quite an extensive menu beyond matcha. Latte-wise they have a lot of different combos of matcha lattes + floats, hojicha latte + floats, and black sesame lattes. They also have a lot of other teas and tea slushes (kind of like a frappe), including non-caffeinated options. The most popular items that I saw tended to be different combinations of the latte floats, ice creams, and cakes (the crepe layer cakes and the milk cap cakes). I don't think there is much you can go wrong with though!! The inside is small and with the lines definitely can get loud inside. There are a few small tables and some window seats (best for parties of 1-2 people), but larger groups could try to snag a table outside or just plan to take their drinks or orders to go and hang out on Beacon street. There is definitely more limited seating given the popularity of the cafe, so judge accordingly and be on the look out for a spot if you plan on dining in. The line moves pretty quickly. We were waiting in a 15-20 person line and only had to wait ~5 min before ordering and about 5-10 min for our order, which is pretty impressive in my opinion. Quality seems to be top-notch and they are well staffed, so are handling the bustling business pretty great. Would recommend a visit in, especially as the weather is nice this summer! The outside area right around the cafe is actually covered so even if it rains (as is typical in the New England summers), you can enjoy a sweet treat here! read more

The line was wrapped around the block, but it was worth the 45 min wait. Definitely try their soft serve and matcha cap cake. The soft serve was creamy and packed with deep matcha flavor. The cap cake was a matcha chiffon cake topped with cheese foam + red bean. When you combine some red bean with the fluffiness of the matcha cake, it's a perfect bite. Something they can improve upon is their matcha latte needs a deeper matcha flavor. The matcha towel cake looked pretty, but it's just a crepe filled with a ton of matcha whipped cream and red bean. The red beans were oddly hard. If you're a fan of whipped cream, then you'd like the roll cake. But personally I think the cap cake was way better. Another thing to note is their service is amazing. They limit each customer to 2 cakes & the cashier told us they sold out of all cakes besides the cap cake. We were a bit bummed because the towel cake was the main reason we came, but after our order came out, a lady from the back brought more out. We thought they wouldn't let us order it since we already left the line, but the lady (who I assumed was the manager) was kind enough to let us purchase one. She even personally rang us up. Finally got to try Kyo Matcha and it's definitely the perfect place to grab a sweet treat! We heard it always has a line but luckily we went during off hours and it wasn't too busy. We ordered two matcha drinks and two desserts: the tiramisu crepe cake and the matcha cheese mousse cake. Both desserts were good but the cheese mousse cake was the star and I would definitely order again! This place was sooo popular that it was hard to be convinced to wait in that long line to get dessert here, but once I saw the line was much shorter (not bursting through the doors as I normally see it) and so I decided to try and I'm glad that I did!! I've tried their matcha parfait and the matcha crepe cake and I have to say, both of them exceeded my expectations. The matcha crepe cake was NOT overly sweet, which is what a lot of matcha desserts I've tried are. There's a strong matcha flavor which I really appreciated! It's a bit pricy at $10 a slice but could be a good small splurge once in a while. The parfait was also delicious and pretty simple - just their matcha soft serve with some red bean and corn flakes but surprisingly all goes together great! Would definitely come back for it. I've also been wanting to try the matcha towel cake because it looks so creamy! I would say the only downside is the long lines they always have. I'm not sure I'd wait that long in line for a bit pricy of a dessert, but if the lines are short I'd definitely stop by.
