As a solo diner, I've had a handful of the most pleasant meals in DC and Kyojin ranks up there as one of the best for Japanese cuisine. The staff was pretty responsive and accommodating, and I appreciated them for being able to put together a space for me so quickly. I would describe the restaurant as being pretty "vibey". It sort of feels like you are in an underground cave when you walk in. There's a large bar area with seating, as well as plenty of seating at a separate sushi counter, where you can watch the chefs prepare fresh sushi right in front of you. All in all, I have no major complaints about the night. The server was friendly and accommodating, the cocktails were interesting and tasty, and the food was good, even if the portion sizes were a bit small. Took my daughter to KYOJIN in Georgetown for her birthday, and wow--what an experience. The place is gorgeous--brick walls, origami cranes, Japanese textiles. I showed up in business casual and honestly felt overdressed! It's upscale with a relaxed vibe. At least three (very friendly) managers stopped by to check on us, and our server, the beautiful Inesa from Ukraine never stopped smiling. The food? Incredible. I had the Volcano and Mexican rolls--both delicious, but the Mexican roll stole the show. My daughter loved all her raw fish, and the cocktails were so good. Highly recommend sitting at the counter. They make so many unique sushi creations using high end techniques that it's very entertaining to watch. They added gold leaves, used the smoke box etc. You're not just watching your own orders get made but everyone's order at the restaurant so you can see what looks good to order too! I got the spicy toro with uni roll, carpaccio style lavender smoked salmon, raw creamy scallop roll and tried a piece of my friend's wagyu roll. Kyojin's wagyu and scallop were delicious. Their uni was also quite good too and very creamy. Their toro was good but not blow me out the water good. Not sure what I was expecting, maybe just a smokier flavored sashimi but I found the lavendar smoked salmon to be too chewy, closer to store smoked salmon in texture than sashimi. The raw scallop was delicious and buttery but jalepeno mayo was too overpowering. I might try their miso garlic butter scallops next time. This was our first visit to Kyojin Sushi and we really enjoyed it. The place has an upscale, hip, industrial vibe. The staff were all friendly and helpful. We really enjoyed everything we ordered (with one exception). It's definitely on the pricey side and portions are relatively small. We had three drinks and a couple of bottles of sparkling water and the bill, including tip and tax, was $388 for the three of us. We loved all of the rolls we ordered, with the exception of the veggie roll. We also really liked the "chicken tempura," although it was more like upscale super tasty nuggets than tempura. The house gyoza was tasty, but only came with three pieces. We will definitely return for another visit at a future date. read more

Cam to Kyojin hoping to add another good sushi place to the list of places to consider whenever that craving hits. We ordered the course menu they were offering at the time which came with a nice variety and selection of choices. In addition to the courses we ordered some very nice and tasty cocktails. Though besides the wonderfully tasty cocktails the start to our meal was a bit concerning. To start, we got some Gyoza in addition to our course and to be quite honest the Gyoza were incredibly disappointing. The description touted high end ingredients like Wagyu but the overall cohesive taste was just downright basic. I have had frozen dumplings from the Asian supermarkets that tasted similar if not juicier. At almost $20 for a serving of three Gyoza, I was internally raging at how much I felt that was a rip off. To follow on the heels of this disappointment, there was a significant delay in the serving of our actual course orders. The staff were gracefully apologetic and provided a small salad side as compensation and to tie us over. I was quite frankly more of a fan of that salad than I was the Gyoza. Thankfully that's where the issues end as the rest of the food was delicious. The variety of sashimi courses that came were all very unique and had interesting spins on them that added to the already delightful taste of the fish itself. The last course was their famous "The Winner" dish and it was without a doubt the best thing we had that night. It's clear why they end on that and why it has its name. If you ever come to Kyojin that is the single dish you should not leave without trying. Dessert was nice with some ice cream, they had some very unique flavors that you don't usually get offered at other places so that was also a nice note to end on. All in all, if you'd like to try "The Winner" or have some delicious cocktails I think Kyojin is somewhere you should try. However, since the rest of what we had that night was on a limited course menu and the otherwise only thing we actually ordered off their regular menu was such a disappointment, I'd have to wager that the value you'd get from coming here for any of their regular menu items other than the aforementioned "The Winner" would be a gamble in terms of your satisfaction. read more

My girlfriend and I visited for dinner on Sunday March 1 2026 in the early evening. I had been there once before but this was her first time. Everyone else has already reviewed the great things about this place, so I thought I'd share that I got food poisoning, perhaps from their 'fresh from japan' (how is that even a thing??) scallops. It's two days later and I'm still running to the toilet. Our total was over $300, the most I've ever spent for food poisoning. I'm posting both to let Kyojin know they may have a problem with their food and should look in to it, and I'd like to inform other diners who might be dealing with this, that they aren't alone in their experience. The service was fantastic and the ambience super, as has been commented on ad infinitum. But they mar this beauty in several ways, for example: Have you wondered how this restaurant has so many google reviews (over 6000 at this moment)? It's because they ask you to leave google reviews right there at the table, and use a bluetooth card-swipe to open google reviews on your phone while you're still seated. Waitstaff will ask you to mention them by name, which they helpfully circle on the bill so you have it there in front of you. This is heavy-handed treatment for a restaurant of this caliber. They are also trained in the art of the repeated upsell attempt as you order. Both begging for reviews and the repeated pursuit of the upsell are unbecoming of a restaurant serving food at this level (and charging concomitant prices). I would never expect, say, The Four Seasons Restaurant (IFKYK) to nag me for reviews while I'm still seated at the table, but in this instagram/'food influencer' era it may make perfect sense, from a marketing standpoint: Many diners these days take photos of their food, and this opportunity practically guarantees Kyojin that these images will be posted. At the same time, these customers have full stomachs and probably have been drinking, and with this satiety comes a benign joviality - and a predisposition to ignore any negatives. Reviewers are also less likely to leave negative reviews while they're still seated at the table. For anyone actually interested in reading thoughtful reviews left by someone other than bedazzled, possibly buzzed consumers, I'd recommend sorting reviews by rating and reading the lower-starred ones. For example, I agree with the reviewer who wrote that the menu is so complicated it practically requires assistance from your server -- who will then repeatedly try to upsell you. I am adding an edit to respond to their apparently automated reply from the general manager. Your tepid reply is uncaring, underwhelming, unresponsive, and AI-like. Food poisoning is far, far beyond your restaurant merely not meeting my expectations - I've been sick for two days, beginning with my stomach bloating right there at the table. Your remark that you are "looking forward to turning this around" is pure sunshine-and-rainbows marketing drivel: Aggravating to read between my toilet visits and insulting to my sensibilities as a customer. read more

Made a reservation here at 5 pm before catching a show at the Kennedy Center at 7:30 pm on a Saturday night. We were seated right away in a nice, kind of quieter section. Our waitress came over to us quickly and told us all her favorites/specials, and there were a lot. We ended up getting the edamame with the black pepper garlic sauce, the kyojin house made gyoza, the monster trio, the wagyu bowl, and the moulard duck breast. The food came out very quickly. The edamame came out first, I didn't try it, but my husband really enjoyed it and got through a good amount of it. The monster trio was DELICIOUS. The wagyu was our favorite. It was just cooked so well. The seared miso scallops were so light and melted in your mouth. The Toro was good, but the other 2 were so good, this one was just okay. The dumplings were just your average dumplings. They only give you 3, and honestly, with all the meats mixed in the filling, you really can't taste any difference with the higher quality lobster/wagyu. The wagyu bowl was so so good. Our favorite dish of the night. Our waitress had told us they only had 2 that night, so I'm glad we came early and we're able to get one! The duck was delicious - cooked absolutely perfectly. We also got the strawberry crepe cake but were pretty disappointed. They try to beef up the layers by place a thin layer of sponge cake on the bottom. They need to brush that with some simple syrup because it was incredibly dry. They also don't spread out the cream filling all the way to the outer circumference of the crepes, which is fine. But it was so short that it was laughable and looked silly. And the end of that cake was so dry without it. The food does come out incredibly quickly, we were out by 6 pm. The wagyu beef is the way to go. The quality is amazing. The food portions are small though. I wasn't super hungry since we were having such an early dinner, but even I wasn't full at the end of it. read more

Phenomenal hidden gem in Georgetown! Kyojin is beautifully decorated with murals overlooking a large bar, origami surrounding the tables, and dimly lit space that gives off a lounge vibe. Staff was great - accommodating some late arrivals and providing attentive service and excellent recommendations for dishes, share plates, and cocktails. You could not go wrong with anything ordered and while we had many different palates and people in our group newer to Japanese food, we were able to easily find something for everyone and introduce people to new flavors. I do recommend making reservations as the people in front of us were unable to get a table without a reservation. There is the bar as an option open as well. HH Monday-Friday for food and drinks. Parking garage a few blocks away. Located in Cady's alley (Georgetown), kind of tucked away in the corner across from cafe Leopold and adjacent to the stairs. The ambiance was nice. Not stuffy but not too loud you can't converse. Service was ok. For the price of the meal, it didn't exceed our expectations. Now the food: everything we had was exceptional. Fresh quality cuts of fish, uni, scallops, wagyu, etc. I would recommend their seasonal/specialty menu as their menu is pretty extensive. My favorite was the scallop nigiri. They ran out of the scallop sashimi the night we went which I'm sure would've been amazing. Monster quad was a variety of seared fish and they were all great. My friend had the spicy miso and house bao bun to start, and I had the avocado salad with crab- 10/10. She had the signature $45 roll and the salmon lovers roll. Immediately she said how the $45 one was worth it, with melt in your mouth fresh fish and caviar. I had the uni pasta, which is the main reason this is 4 and not 5 stars. The dish was lacking a crunchy texture that could've been easily done with tempura flakes or crispy rice. They even offered me a spoon to finish the uni and roe because there wasn't enough pasta. For me the black sesame uni pasta (mixed as recommended) was creamy, briny, a warm and pleasantly gooey treat - my first uni experience was good! The location is pretty tucked. If you know the location, you would probably find it with ease. It is literally located in an alley as the address indicates. In order to access the restaurant, you must either walk down some stairs or take the elevator. Once the courtyard is reached, there is another restaurant to the left of the stairs, which has outdoor seating that pretty much takes up the entire courtyard space, so unless you know where to go, it appears that there is no other restaurant in that immediate vicinity. As a result, we walked up and down the alley looking for the restaurant. After about two trips up and down the alley to no avail, our waiter walked near the alley and asked if we were there for a 5:30 pm reservation that was when we observed that this restaurant could be completely missed, if you don't know that it is located on the lower level to the immediate right of the stairs. With that said, if entering from a side street and not Wisconsin Avenue, it would definitely be highly visible upon approaching. The ambiance was pretty and featured a theme consistent with the restaurant type. The hostess staff were just okay. Simple greeting upon entering and not sure if there was any communication upon exiting. Four stars for the sushi and miso soup with crab meat, but honestly, it is hard to go wrong with either selection. First time trying miso soup with crabmeat. It was a nice addition, but I still prefer the original. Surprisingly, the amount of crabmeat was a decent portion and not just a modicum of crabmeat pieces here and there. The sushi was fresh. The sushi topped with crabmeat was tastier than the shrimp selection, however, minus the added toppings, the sushi was pretty much the same as anywhere else, so nothing special. The presentation was attractive. The service was good, but not exceptional. The waiter was cordial, our orders were taken timely and the food was served in a reasonable amount of time, which is somewhat indicative of acceptable service. The only drawback is that we felt rushed through our meal. Observationally, the bar area was filled to capacity at 5:30 pm, but the dining area was not and as we were exiting the restaurant, there was no one waiting to be seated, so the whole rushing process was not understandable. We were there for approximately thirty minutes give or take, but nowhere near as long to create such urgency to rush through our meal. It took more time to secure parking in Georgetown on a Saturday afternoon than to have the meal. read more

I heard about the lunch omakase and had to go. The limited seating at the bar was empty so I had my pick where to sit. Once seated, I was served water with my first piece following shortly after. It felt like a very quick experience and is a great go to for a quick lunch in dc. The pieces were served warm and efficiently, with very little waiting time in between ( which was much appreciated). The food was fresh, had great flavor, and was plenty. For $40 you receive seven pieces of fish, one hand roll, and a cup of miso soup. From start to finish it was about 25 minutes. Some notes, there are no reservations so get there early if you think it may be busy. Also, tip is not included. I highly recommend for those wanting to get a glimpse at what omakase has to offer or to those who want an easy, delicious sushi lunch. I would love to go back for dinner after my experience which is $100 and includes 15 pieces of fish. This is in a food hall a well so you can get a cup of coffee or ice cream following. Kyojin was very enjoyable, with unique offerings in a gorgeous, hidden setting. Some of my favorite bites were the wagyu bao bun, garlic butter miso scallops, and the Yume roll. One of the best sushi places I've been to hands down. I absolutely love the experience of being there. They were both friendly and caring and deeply cared that we had a good experience when we were there. The location is absolutely beautiful. It's a little hideaway on a side street. But what's remarkable is in your walk there, you feel like you've stumbled upon a hidden gem, and when you walk in, you realize it to be true.
