This place offers a delightful respite from the hustle and bustle of the city, tucked away in a charming alley. When we entered, we were greeted by a cozy ambiance. We started with a taste of their spicy miso soup, a comforting blend of flavors. Probably the best miso soup I've tasted around here. The richness of the broth combined with just the right amount of spice was perfect. I ordered the lobster volcano roll which was a true masterpiece of culinary craftsmanship. Each bite was a symphony of flavors, with tender lobster enveloped in a medley of rice and nori, topped with a nice sauce. We ordered other rolls as well. Throughout our meal, our waitress, Jibby, was attentive and knowledgeable, providing excellent recommendations of what else to order and ensuring our dining experience was nothing short of exceptional. Seated at the bar, we had the pleasure of witnessing the skilled chefs at work, crafting each dish with precision and care. Despite the bustling kitchen, the wait time from ordering to food arriving was surprisingly short. Had a delightful new discovery in Georgetown. Six of us had an early dinner on Friday, 5:30 pm. It's a popular spot so if you have a bigger party for the weekend call for reservation early. The uni, scallops, toro, salmon were fresh and sliced at the right thickness. The chefs also have very creative presentations of the fish, great variety of Japanese beers, sake and cocktails. Make sure to leave room for dessert especially their lemon cake. The interior of the restaurant was designed and laid out comfortably. Sound level was great for private convo. Wait staff was knowledgeable and attentive. It's located in the newly redeveloped part of Georgetown called Candy Alley. There are lots of places to walk around before and after a meal. Parking can be tricky. So do plan ahead and leave lots of time to find parking. read more

Absolutely loved the sushi here. they do some super unique rolls and also nigiri, both are a cant miss. I tried the japanese sandwich and it was very good. my favorite was uzukuri style and the sashimi roll. Also the vibe inside is absolutely amazing- you truly feel transported somewhere else. I went to this restaurant earlier this year with my wife to celebrate her birthday. Since we moved from the Bay Area a few years back, we've been looking for good sushi places in DC. This place did not disappoint. While it's not an everyday sushi place, it's nice to have an option where we can treat ourselves to really good sushi that's really fresh. We started with a few small dishes, like the wagyu bun and the yellowtail carpaccio. They were both delicious. We then ordered the Monster Quad from their special menu. We both loved the seared salmon belly and the seared A5 wagyu the most. But overall, we loved their regular nigiri even more than the seared ones. Even though I was a little skeptical of smoked salmon in sushi, the lavender smoked salmon tasted really good. The service was great and our waitress was very attentive and patient with us as we took our time choosing from their fairly large menu. They even brought us an extra dessert and candle to celebrate my wife's birthday. We loved the experience overall and we can't wait to go back. read more

The food was really well executed and unique. Would definitely recommend the scallop signature dish and the sashimi platter (great value!). The scallop dish had such unique flavors it tasted like something I had never experienced before - recommend!! The lobster roll and green river roll were good but I prefer more traditional sushi rolls that are not overwhelmed with sauces. Also found them to be cut very thinly. That being said the service was very good. They were patient, helpful with advice, and open to putting sauces on the side for rolls as per our request. Been to their other restaurant, Yume so wanted to try this place. In terms of the taste of food and ambiance: amazing. They really put the work into this place and the food. Ther sushi was very delcious. And the scallop melted in my mouth. The one thing I wish they could imprve on was their portions. Very small for the amount of money you spend here. I know high end sushi restaurants can have small portions, but I really noticed it here. If you don't mind spending a little more money to get full, definitely give this place a try as the food is really good! read more

Yume is my favorite sushi restaurant in NoVa so I had to try Kyojin! I've been lucky enough to have it twice now and I loved the food/hospitality each time! The decor is beautiful yet hip as well. My favorites are the Sashimi Roll, Naked Roll, Kyojin Roll, Lavender salmon, Butter Miso Scallop, and Scallop sashimi with Foie Gras. This was one of the worst dining experiences I've had in DC--and I've had some pretty overpriced, mediocre meals. Two stars because the fish was fine and the sushi chefs were kind, everything else was a complete and utter disappointment in terms of service. Our reservation was for 7:30 and we were not seated until 7:55. Another party in front of us told us that they had been waiting 45 minutes for their reserved table. We specifically noted in our booking that we were celebrating a birthday. There was no acknowledgement of that note for our table despite the high-spenders at the end of the sushi bar receiving an extra candle-clad desert. While the quality of fish was decent, the actual structure of the sushi and ratio of rice was completely off. The cuts of fish were more reminiscent of a sashimi cut (which makes sense considering they were the same cuts of fish going out on sashimi platters) and were accompanied by thimbles of rice. Not to mention egregious wasabi bombs in every other bite. If you're looking for sushi in Georgetown, go to Ama Ami or better yet make the trip to Sushi Ogawa. Don't waste your money here. read more

First thing that stood out was the vibe and atmosphere. Very Vegas like with the EDM music pumping club like vibes throughout the restaurant in an inviting beat that made you feel excited for the choice of restaurant you made tonight. The lighting was dim but manageable almost like you were in a hidden getaway. 5 stars for the vibe! The drink menu was definitely fusion with lots of exotic combination of ingredients. I needed help choosing what to drink as they all seem very intriguing. Unfortunately, our waitress wasn't as enthusiastic in helping us curate our perfect drink or food menu at this well thought out establishment. The food had very cool combination of caviar and foie gras with your sushi pieces which leaves you wanting more. The quality of fish was great for USA standards but wasn't the same as those you get in Japan. The plates are served beautifully but the wait staff could've been better at place them. The Wagyu wasn't bad but not as tender as I'm used to with the rice and meat over powered by the sauce. For great steak, let the steak speak for itself. All in all foods was a great experience and perhaps my expectations were higher for the service staff at a place like this where all the details in design and layout was so immaculately considered. I'll be back, but I hope to have better servers who can take the experience home. read more

If you love sushi & I mean, REALLY love sushi then this is the place for you. The options are literally mouth watering & I promise you'll want every single dish on the menu. We kicked things off w/ the "Ceviche" & I absolutely loved that it came w/ soy wasabi taro chips. This added an extra kick to the already enticing flavor. Next up, we tried the "Tiger Roll" & what's better than having both crab & shrimp together in a roll? Very yummy! Let me tell you about the "Toro Tartare" - this dish was absolutely delicious. This was recommended by our waiter & it surely did not disappoint. Topped w/ caviar & just a smidge of wasabi...chefs kiss. We also decided to try the "Tataki Style" custom signature dish w/ toro & the presentation of this dish was stunning. Last but not least, we ordered the "A5 Wagyu Bowl" & this legit is heaven in a bowl. With all the different additions, I thought the flavor was amazing. I do wish that the Wagyu & rice were a little hotter though, which is my only complaint. Overall, I'm a fan of Kyojin. For the price and luxury that this place tries to deliver, the service wasn't that great. We got a reservation here. Before we get there, I called if they can have a small cake for my friend for her birthday. They outright said no and didn't even let me order a cake in advance, which is fine but I was surprised that they were so dry in their communication. Later when we arrived at the restaurant, they asked some other customers if they want their coats to be checked in but they didn't ask us. Apparently they are selective in who can check their coat. (Second weird thing). When we sat at our table, apparently our server was under stress or something but she seemed to hate us from the beginning. Throughout the whole dinner she was rushing us to order with a very bad attitude. Later when we are trying to order some entrees, she mentioned that because the kitchen is under pressure, if we order, it takes around 25 minutes for our food to arrive. Later we realized it was just another tactic to pressure us into ordering the food and ordering more. Basically the whole dinner we didn't feel any peace in this restaurant. We got a sake from their sake list. It wasn't that great. Something called "mirror of truth" which I would say tasted like rubbing alcohol. And unfortunately, our friends were a little bit tipsy and they ordered another one. For the food, a normal sushi, we got some appetizer and some rolls with one of the specials. The food was ok but nothing special and the whole experience with the server didn't make it better. We got the crepe layered cake for the table which I would say was really good and everybody was happy with it and the combo with the vanilla ice cream. All in all, I wouldn't really recommend going to this restaurant if you are looking for a peaceful and calm night and expect great service. read more

We had an exceptional evening at Kyojin. The restaurant is MASSIVE, and elegantly chic, seems like a great date night spot. We went for Restaurant Week 24. Our server was very knowledgeable and attentive. BBQ Bun, Pickled Cucumber, Seaweed Salad, Miso Clams, 2 scallop rolls, a salmon roll, and 2 crab rolls, ending with uni pasta and Garlic Butter Miso scallops (which were my favorites of the evening. While the *best* sushi I've ever had was in Hawaii, this was probably the best stateside sushi I've ever had. The key to good sushi IMHO is doing the basics right, and this spot more than delivered on that! Looks like a great date night spot as well. Overall, it was a great experience. read more

So I'll start off by saying the service was good and the ambiance was very nice. Those are the best things about this place. But as far as the food is concerned -- underwhelming and overpriced. For drinks, i had the Only Pandan cocktail - tasted like oversaturated juice so I only ordered one. For food, we had the Monster Quad, green river roll, crazy monkey, salmon nigiri, A5 wagyu roll, lobster roll, and creamy scallop roll. The monster quad was not good and was overpriced. The salmon nigiri was basically sashimi because there was barely any rice and the salmon was very fatty. The creamy scallop roll was drowned in sauce, that's literally all you could taste. We had the lobster roll last and literally didn't finish it because the lobster was obviously not fresh. The other rolls were ok. Overall, we were not impressed with any of the dinner items as literally nothing tasted fresh. Except the cucumber in the lobster roll. Lol. If I HAD to pick a favorite, I'd say the A5 wagyu roll. For dessert we had the matcha ice cream and vanilla crepe cake. The cake was dry but the matcha ice cream was pretty good. In all, I won't be back. I came here because it was one of the highest-rated sushi restaurants in dc on Google. As a sushi lover, I'd say you're better off at Love Makoto or Sushi Hachi, which are both delicious and have never let me down. read more

Made dinner reservations with a friend on a Sunday night at the sushi bar. We both started with miso soups and shared a few rolls (green river, Japanese sandwich, yume, and sashimi rolls). Everything was delicious, and the fish was super fresh. Our faves were probably the Japanese sandwich and yume roll, but honestly we loved them all. One star taken off for minor service critiques- Our server only recommended the priciest rolls & menu items and was obviously disappointed when we declined his upsell attempts. Also I included in the reservation notes that we were there celebrating my friend's birthday, and it wasn't mentioned at any point by our server or the restaurant staff. Nothing major. Great happy hour specials and great bar service. My wife and I recently went here for date night without a reservation. I had doubts about being able to just walk in and get seated but we were offered seats at both the bar and chefs bar, both with full menu and service. We opted for the bar which still had about 45 minutes left on happy hour. We almost filled up just on happy hour specials but I made sure to save some room for a regular menu sushi roll - the Greenday roll. Instead of the normal seaweed wrap, this was wrapped in soy paper which I've never had before. It was very tasty and the texture of the soy paper made for a new experience (in a good way). One nice feature at this bar is the Japanese whiskey flights offered at all price points depending on your sense of adventure. read more

Poor quality menu and clientele. I found the menu to be very frustrating to read. They have so many options that you can't remember what you've just read. They should offer a highlighter for guests to mark what looks good so they don't have read the King James Bible of a menu all over again. The music was too loud, but perhaps I should be thankful given the conversations going on around us. The little brat masquerading as a hostess couldn't have seemed less interested in helping us. I found the sushi roll options limited in variety of fish and not very inspiring. Our waiter, Ben, was delightful. He was very helpful in assisting with the menu and thoroughly attentive. We had the most magical night here. The dark, subterranean, labyrinthian vibe is ethereal when juxtaposed with the beautiful art on the walls. And my Lavender Dream cocktail was tart but balanced with creaminess. But my descriptions end there; it's kind of pointless to list the things we ate, because every single one of them was phenomenal. I know other places have the label for best sushi in DC, but they are wrong. This fish was the highest quality, fatty sushi that either of us have ever had. The Monster Quad and the Taste of Japan are both excellent ways to try many of them. And The Winner is a must-try but attempting to describe each of the flavors wrapped into it is an effort in futility. The best thing I can say is that nearly everything was infused with truffle and topped with foie gras--the flavors were a playground in my mouth. The Uni Pasta was unique and fun with lots of different textures but maybe my least favorite of everything we tried? But I would absolutely still get it again and recommend that you do too, because you can't go wrong here and that's a forced ranking against my better judgement. Appetizers and sushi rolls were delicious - nothing life-changing but delicious nonetheless. We had great service. What really stood out to me was the ambiance.
