Our favorite date night spot in the Bay. Wonderful selection of rare fish, great quality food and nigiri, the staff is wonderful, and we have always had great service. Having been to lots of sushi spots this place will always be our benchmark and we are honored to be regulars. It's a small spot, they don't take reservations, and the staff tries their best to make every dining experience too notch. We will be back again and again and look forward to the unique fish selection on the whiteboard every night we visit. Kyosho's interior is inviting yet sophisticated. It's an intimate dining experience perfect for anything from dates to casual evenings. Depending on the experience you want to receive there are several different tasting menus available that will satisfy any craving. If you want a wholistic impression of Kyosho's dining experience there are a couple different tasting menus to indulge your senses in or you can order by the piece. The ones we experienced were the: 6 course omakase, several sashimi and nigiri dishes ranging from salmon, yellowtail, and tuna, wagyu beef nigiri, and plenty of uni. Our absolute favorite dish and possibly the best dish at Kyosho's is hands down the Wagyu beef nigiri. The Wagyu beef nigiri is topped with caviar and edible gold and the gold is a precursor to the richness and the quality of Wagyu beef. We were a huge fan and incredibly impressed with the freshness and quality of the uni. It literally melts in your mouth! The service was also impeccable. The waiters were attentive and a deep understanding on the menu. They truly completed the dining experience for us. Had to return for a second time after picking up a to go order. A bomb roll was missing and I was going to buy another, because I felt we may need more food. The missing order was $12 of a $178 to go order. The to-go woman assisting me chose to fight me over the missing order. Told me my wife and I were wrong. That she knew for a fact we were incorrect. I called my wife on my cell and she counted the dishes to confirm the error. The to-go woman refused to listen. I told her I wasn't there to try to get free food but that we had been charged without receiving all the food. I couldn't believe it. She was so entitled and rude. Worse service I have ever received, and certainly the worse to-go experience. Very shortsighted as well - a $12 dollar complaint cost you a customer for life. I will never recommend your restaurant to anyone. Shame on you. read more

Oh my goodness everything here was delicious! Apparently they do take reservations, even though yelp didn't say that they did. Luckily we still got a table for 6 right when they opened. Their hot sake is pretty dang good and we also got a bottle of one of the cold sakes. Their sashimi combos have great value and the quality of the fish here is really good. We tried the Wagyu plate and we got 7 tiny tiny pieces of Wagyu steak for $49. But omg the piece I had was AMAZING and melted in our mouths. I just chewed it with my tongue. We wouldn't have ordered it if we actually had to pay for it on out own (company dinner yay). read more

It is a small place with 10 tables at most. Luckily we got in when it opened at 530 pm and got a table immediately. It got filled up with 30 minutes and people had to wait for seats. The service was relatively fast. My friend got all his rolls before my sashimi platter and special uni dish were served. The rolls were nothing special, but the uni was very good. Came here for dinner on a Wednesday night. Overall, the food and service were very good. I had the A5 wagyu beef nigiri, which was amazing. Melt-in-your-mouth decadence with just enough rice to absorb and enhance the richness of the meat. The sauce was just the right combination of salty, sweet, and umami and the garlic chips on top of the meat added a nice touch, visually and in flavor. I also had the duck breast udon. The broth was delicious! Full of flavor but surprisingly light. I drank it all. The udon was perfect: smooth, chewy but still had a bite. I found the star of the dish--the duck breast--to be underwhelming, however. Though the portion was good, the meat lacked flavor and only tasted gamey. Perhaps a sear would help? I wanted the mochi ice cream for dessert, but they were out. They were also out of the scallop crush appetizer I wanted to try, as well. While this might be a commitment to freshness, I was a bit disappointed that several of the menu items weren't available. I'll be back to try them in the future, though. I'm also curious to try the omakase. If you're looking for good Japanese food, Kyosho is a good option. It's a little on the pricier end, but the food is delicious. read more

Kyosho is the latest sushi outpost in Menlo Park and a welcome addition to the area that has really lacked stellar Japanese compared to cities farther north like San Mateo and Burlingame. It's a very tiny space and filled very quickly. The door swings inward and with little space to wait, there's not a great option for groups waiting. On a weekend night, the place was packed with families but I can see Kyosho being better for couples given the tight spacing and limited seating. There is a bar seating area but it's similarly small (3 seats). When you enter, you're greeted by a large white board specials menu written on a blackboard above the bar. Service is friendly but can easily be overwhelmed by the crowds. Fortunately, fish quality is high and we sampled a wide array of items: Blue Fin Tuna Trio - $33. Three grades of tuna at two modestly sized pieces each are served with some fine sea salt and wasabi. Freshness was excellent and the pieces were delicious though truly bite sized. Toro Tartare - $20. Served with shredded daikon chips, I similarly expected a larger portion with larger chips. Great flavor and reminiscent of preparations at places like Nobu or Morimoto. Omakase Nigiri - $40. Nice selection of varied and fresh fish with good knife skills and minimal embellishment beyond the fish. Slices are thin but long, similar to the popular Amami chain though a step below in the value department. Overall, very good and an easy recommendation to order. Nigiri and Handroll Combination - $28. Another solid option with varied fish like salmon, hamachi, ebi, and maguro but notable for the freshness. Again, not very large cuts but good quality. Bafun Hokkaido Uni - $18. The treat of the night. Bafun is the higher, orange/red Uni served at higher end restaurants and notable for creamier texture. Quite good and not an unreasonable price given the quality. Santa Barbara Uni - $12. Santa Barbara is prevalent and the version here is good and a value. Overall, we had a solid meal here. The Omakase Nigiri is an easy choice and several black Board specials of fish from Japan are notable. Portions are on the smaller side and prices add up way too quickly but if you're a sushi aficionado in the area, you'll make a stop here. Kyosho accepts credit cards including Amex. read more

Wow, this is the 100th sushi place I've remembered to bookmark as visited. They all kinda start to blur in my mind lol. We enjoyed everything we ordered. They need to get someone with better handwriting to write on their "specials/chalkboard menu" because it is hard to read. I liked the uni shiso tempura. The salmon trio was fun to try. I enjoyed the Crazy and Kyosho Roll too. Overall, it's a cute place that has good sushi at high prices. read more

Came here to celebrate my sister's bday, and it did not disappoint. We set up reservations ahead of time, so we were seated quickly. It is a pretty small restaurant, maybe a 30 person max capacity. We were greeted by all the friendly servers, and we began our dinner with the 6 course omakase meal. It's $60 for this option; there is also an 8 course omakase meal that is priced at $80. The menus are placed on the table top, so you know what you will be enjoying that evening. 1. Seared Salmon Belly: good texture but a bit too salty/sweet; i'd rather have it on the simple, plain side to really taste the protein 2. Sweet Prawn & Uni Soup: mmm soo creamy and delish! Prawn was cooked to perfection, not rubbery 3. Tuna & Red Snapper Sashimi: so buttery smooth, probably one of my favorites of the night 4. Fried Lobster Ball w/ Truffle Sauce: flavor was really good, had a subtle hint of seaweed. The lobster was somewhat chewy. 5. Duck Breast Udon: Wait, this was one my favorites too! The noodles tasted like they were handmade (which we learned are not made in house, but still hella good). Broth was so simple and delectable 6. Green Tea Cheesecake: ahhh what a good way to end the night. Creamy and not overly sweet. Kampachi Kama: holy crap, this was so flaky and grilled to perfection. The skin wasn't burnt yet it had that great grill taste. Sea Bream Sashimi (8 pcs for $25): just as buttery smooth with a tiny bite to it, loved it! The service was great, very attentive and friendly. They made sure we were happy with all our food and sake. They were very sweet to put my sister's dessert with a candle and special colorful lights. I was on a date by myself since my man bailed on me on our normal date night. Since he refuses to eat anywhere but Sushi Plus for sushi because of their ridiculously large portions for the price, I took this as an opportunity to find a new sushi restaurant we could potentially use as our date night (it's usually Los Altos Grill). I walked in the door at 8:40 and was promptly slapped in the face with a flag. No worries though, since I was about to feast out with new sushi and sake. Since they closed at 9 I figured that gave me 40 minutes to scarf it all down. Not the case!! As I walked through the door a young waiter greeted me with the most befuddled look and the words, "do you need something?" I told him I needed to eat and he said sorry we're closed already. I started to respond when the sushi chef said something to him in Chinese, then the waiter passed his message on to me. To-go? I said sure. So I took my seat next to 3 other patrons, a single guy having his date night alone too and was just receiving his meal, one couple was finished, and the other was halfway through their meal. The experience was super annoying the food were small portions but pretty good (I had 2 rolls), but not as tasty while eating it in my car. While I realize that this waiter's demeanor is/was cultural and not personal I will not be coming back. Another reviewer mentioned a Japanese owned restaurant in Palo Alto, that I think I'll try on my next single date night out. read more

I was so looking forward to the Kaiseki menu dinner, but pretty disappointed. They were pretty friendly but kept saying for almost every single fish that they are from Hokkaido. The "Chyawan mushi" steamed egg pudding was like soup. That's how you get when the temperature is not right or cooking time is not right. It needs to be like custard. That was far from the case..... For $150 per person, that was not really worth the experience. We had much better food at another place..... Perhaps my expectation was too high?? read more

Came here for my friend's birthday dinner which was also on Valentine's Day. They do not do reservations, so we had everything going against us for getting a good table - a group of 4 in a small restaurant, Valentine's Day, and prime dinner eating time - so I took it upon myself to get there before it opened to get us a spot. I got there 15 minutes before it opened and they was already a line forming. When my party arrived, we ordered a bunch of stuff from the menu and drinks. It was a rough start for me because I needed things to be gluten free and I asked before ordering if things were okay and was told they were, and when they came I asked again and was told differently! I had called ahead about my dietary restrictions and they told me I could be accommodated fine. They made things right though by switching things out, but it would have been nice to know before ordering! The actual options were pretty limiting. I do recommend the sashimi though; it tasted fresh and of good quality. I'm a fan of uni and like how they had many different options of having it (2 types, sashimi, cooked, etc). It's a pretty expensive place to eat on a weekly basis - as is most sushi, but this one is at least worth the quality - I'd save it for special occasions and for a date or else you'd be waiting awhile to get a larger party seated unless you come when it opens like I did. read more

Came here for dinner on a Sunday night and it was fairly crowded. Took us a while to get a table for two. We wanted to get the Omakase 55, but was told that they ran out of ingredients and we were offered a $40 omakase instead. Honestly, it was good enough. It came with ebi soup which was great. They also offered us a salad because we were waiting way too long for the food since it was very busy. The fish itself was decently fresh and I like that they included wasabi in the sushi. Service was decent and we had an overall pleasant experience. My only complaint is that the air circulation isnt great, so I ended up smelling like fried food after my meal because of the tempura. read more

What a shame. They remodeled the restaurant a couple of years ago and we loved it. Small. Intimate, (10 tables) great atmosphere...until last night. We walked in to find that they had installed a projector TV. The screen filled the entire wall (12 feet of a 14 foot wall). For some reason, they felt like they needed to be the Dutch Goose or the Old Pro. Now it is just a bar that serves Japanese food. Only one person, a guy, watched the TV because he ran out of things to do on his phone and ignored his date. The lights from the screen made the room twice as bright and was hugely distracting. #EpicFail. read more

Where do I begin?! Found this place on Yelp as I was searching for a new sushi place to try over the weekend. Bf and I got excited that they have the 6 course Omakase. We got to the place around 8pm and we're seated right away. Our first course was Uni in some type of seaweed soup,which took over much of the flavor. Our second course was a Japanese mushroom soup (basically you can say miso soup with mushroom, nothing special) and took longer than expected. I also had to ask for chopsticks! Shouldn't they already be on the table?? Our third course was the Hamachi carpaccio, which I will admit was pretty good. Fish was fresh and was drizzled with grapeseed oil. Fourth course was fried tempura. I think the waiter said that one of the pieces was abalone. But come on now, I can get tempura anywhere! At this point I was getting worried. What has come out so far was definitely not worth the price. I was hoping the next course would be some amazing fish and make up for everything. The fifth course came out with 5 pieces of nigiri that you literally can get from any sushi spot. Yellowtail, bluefin, salmon, scallop, and albacore. B-A-S-I-C! Wow so disappointed. Last but not least, our dessert is a small bowl of sorbet and a half piece of macaron! Seriously, they can't even give out a full macaron?!!! Not worth $60/person for the Omakase course. You can get the same meal for at least half the price at any normal sushi spot. I know they're new, but I can't see myself coming back here unless they have some drastic changes happen. This is a true story. Excuse the long background but I promise I'll get to the point - which is that this place is excellent! Boyfriend and I just came back from a 10 day trip in Greece and we were literally dying to have some Asian food, especially sushi. We got back on Monday and naturally all the better sushi places are closed. We ended up going to a popular Chinese owned sushi place in SSF and was not quite satisfied. Day two back in the Bay, and we're still desperately trying to get our sushi fix. We figured we'd have another night of sushi to make up for Monday's experience. We stumble upon this place as we were in the area. As we approach, first thing we notice is the Soft Opening banner still hanging... oh no. We walk in, place is small and cozy, modern decor seems promising... we sit at sushi bar and realize Chef is Chinese... oh boy. Yeah, oh boy were we proven wrong by our assumptions! We both ordered the 10pc omakase which was under $40, great value. The place we went to the night before also had a 10pc omakase for same price, but wow, what a difference! I have a thing about attention to detail, especially in a Japanese restaurant where you're trying to recreate more than the food, but the experience and the culture. Kyosho is an excellent example that it can be done and done well. The sushi was excellent. The fish to rice proportions, the freshness of the fish, the taste and bite of the rice. Bravo! We thoroughly enjoyed every single piece, from the variety of white fish to the tuna, toro, scallop and uni. The omakase also came with a wonderful big bowl of amaebi miso soup. Their sake list is also excellent, and not just of the usual supermarket variety. Our meal was comparable to a lot of other higher end places in the city. Upon talking to the chef we realized he had worked at many of the other well known sushi places before, and the experience, knowledge and pride in his work shows. We really enjoyed our meal and the service was friendly and excellent. I imagine this place won't be a secret for much longer even though they just opened two months ago. Looking forward to our next visit again, we are definitely putting Kyosho on our regular rotation. If you're looking for a great sushi meal, then you're gonna want to check this place out! Stopped by Kyosho for lunch on a Saturday. The interior is very nicely appointed. The lunch special menu included roughly half a dozen choices of donburi, plus udon and salad for $16. I ordered the unagi don. The salad was fresh and dressed with a soy wasabi dressing. The don was small but very tasty. The udon was served plain. I normally don't frequent non-Japanese owned Japanese restaurants, but I like this one. I would go back to try the sashimi and sushi. read more

Heard this opened about a month ago and decided to come try it out. I came in Tuesday dinner and there was no line, but the restaurant was getting pretty full by the time I left. We had the toro tartare, the nigiri omakase, and the sushi taco. The toro tartare was a little too salty, but the nigiri omakase was decent. The rice unfortunately wasn't the best though -- too hard. The fish itself and composition of the nigiri made it worth it though. I tried the sushi taco to end the meal. I'm glad they didn't skimp out on the fish for the taco, but the taco shell was just way too salty. It was overall a decent meal, but I probably wouldn't come back. Personally, I'd rather eat high-end sushi or cheap sushi instead of more of a medium tier like this. read more
