My husband and I love Kyoto Coast. I went there when they were a pop-up and hoped that they would become a permanent presence in San Diego. Fortunately, they will be opening three locations this summer. We went to the first day of their soft opening and had their double matcha, strawberry matcha, and blue sky cloud matcha. Our favorite was the double matcha which was a perfect balance of bitter, umami, and sweet. The strawberry matcha had a good balance of sweetness with real strawberry flavor that complimented the strong matcha flavor while the blue sky cloud had more a more mellow flavor of coconut that contrasted well with the sweet marshmallow pieces. We loved our drinks so much that we returned the next day to try the Earl Grey matcha and guava matcha, both of which combined their flavors well, with the Earl Grey having a more subtle flavor compared to the fruitiness of the guava. Meeting Brittany, the owner, was a highlight of our visit. Knowing it's a family-owned, BIPOC-owned business made supporting them feel even more meaningful. We can't wait to visit again to try more flavors at our favorite matcha shop in San Diego! read more

I came in for their soft opening yesterday after revamping this location and man! To start off with, when you're waiting for your order, they share a space with a consignment type business so you can browse little trinkets and secondhand clothes while you wait. My drink was sooo delicious. I decided to try the Blue Sky Cloud Matcha and I'm still dreaming about it. The blue foam was to die for and of course their matcha is ceremonial grade so you know it's the best quality. I bought the Vanilla Bean Dream for my coworker and she said it was one of the best matcha drinks she's ever had. Definitely give this place a try, you won't regret it! read more

Recently vacationed to San Diego and Kyoto Coast Matcha was another must visit for my best friend. I do love matcha so this was a welcomed suggestion! She had heard of them from Tik Tok and it's clear that they've gone viral because we were in a line of about 30 people deep and from the time we got in line to the time we got our drinks, it was about an hour. You've been warned! The line was intense but they clearly take their time on crafting each cup of matcha which I appreciate. The service was super kind too, so overall it really wasn't too frustrating to have to wait. There were quite a few delicious sounding options but I ended up going with the Vanilla Bean Matcha. All of the drinks were priced at $9 which I guess is a little steep, but whatever. The Vanilla Bean is delicious! The vanilla bean foam is thick, creamy, and the perfect amount of sweetness and flavor. It's super creamy so it's a little challenging to mix it all in, but once they're combined it's delicious. The matcha itself was absolutely phenomenal and the best I've ever had by far. If you're a matcha lover Kyoto Coast is definitely a must-try. read more

Kyoto Coast Matcha is a pop-up counter inside a boutique furniture maker in a corner suite of the Little Italy neighborhood. They currently operate between 9:30 am and 1:00 pm on Friday through Sunday. Perhaps they will expand these limited hours because there is almost always a wait to place an order. A few small round tables for seating were placed on the sidewalk in front of the building. I found a curbside space about two blocks away and walked over to join a queue of about a dozen customers. A two-sided poster on a sidewalk stand held the menu in which each of the eight drinks were priced at $9. All of the cold foams were noted to be dairy free. Six of the choices were creative concoctions with an artist's drawing of how the drink looked. I intended to pick one of the two simple selections when I discovered there was a seasonal variety listed on a menu stand at the service counter. The Guava Matcha was the spring offering which was what I bought. There were several baristas preparing orders. It took about 30 minutes from the time I entered the line to when I received my drink. Ceremonial grade matcha was layered on top of regular milk with guava syrup on the bottom of the cup. I was told to stir the contents well before drinking. The blend had a smooth matcha taste while the guava acted as a sweetener. read more

I love that the default milk is oat and all cold foams are non-dairy! Super cute little pop up! The matchas are all very vibrant and colorful. Their flavors are quite fun. I got the strawberry one since I'm a big strawberry fan. Usually strawberry matchas use a puree, but here it's more of a strawberry milk. The drink was a bit sweet for my liking. This seems more like a fun drink rather than a weekday morning pick-me-up. I visited SD for the weekend & LOVE matcha, so visiting this popup was one of the things I was most excited about. I found out about it on TikTok. It's a very cute space. This spot's located inside of a boutique that sells clothing, accessories, jewelry, home decor, and quirky, eclectic little pieces. It was fun to explore a bit while I waited for my drink. The line wasn't excessively long, but I believe I waited over 30 minutes. My friend doesn't drink matcha, so shoutout to her for patiently waiting with me, lol. The staff were working diligently, they were just very busy. I only wish there was more seating. There are a couple tables & a little bench, but most of us had to stand & wait. On the plus side, it was a gorgeous day, & I could get shade by just standing in the boutique. I just had to move around a lot because it was crowded & people constantly needed to get by because space was tight. I love that the menu poster is so large & colorful, making it easy to pick your order before you approach the ordering counter. I went with the vanilla dream matcha because I love vanilla DOWN, but didn't realize until that moment that I've not seen many cafes offer vanilla bean options. This actually may be the first. I was also intrigued by the aloe option, as I've not seen that anywhere else either. Anyways, I loved my drink. The matcha was the perfect texture; smooth and not grainy, I was able to order it with almond milk, and the cold foam was delicious. It was creamy & tasted fresh; not artificial at all. Kyoto Coast Matcha is a vibe! Black owned! It's a pop up in Little Italy that serves matcha drinks with personality. I was able to grab one when I went as part of a partnership between Black Girls Who Walk SD, Kyoto Coast Matcha and Board & Boujee. I had the Vanilla Bean Dream and it was such a good mix of matcha and vanilla. I've never had those two flavors together so I'm glad I could try it out. They had lots of other options that I want to try. They have a Strawberry Matcha I am interested in. There were two sets of seating outside. Two tables and 4 chairs. There is also a concrete bench outside. This is Little Italy so don't forget that the parking is sparse. The event was early before the store opened. When we returned from the walk around 11am, there was a line of at least 10 people. So get there right when they open if you don't want to stand in line. Make sure to check the hours too. It's a pop up so it's not open every hour of the day. I was very pleased to hear that they plan on opening a shop in La Jolla. I'll be so excited to check it out once it opens. read more

I picked up the Kyoto Classic with signature organic first harvest ceremonial matcha with a touch of honey and milk. The flavor of the coastal match was quite amazing. It offered a milder flavor than most, and the beverage was smooth. The match was clean and fresh. It was no doubt, some of the best I have tried in San Deigo. More spacious, more inviting, more drink options and a lot more organized and the quick turnaround time to getting my drinks was less that 2 mins for 3 drinks. Unfortunately, this spot wasn't it for me. My experience was less than expected. The matcha was basic. In my observation, the owner came off as abrasive, the baristas were/looked overwhelmed and inexperienced. Their system of taking orders was unorganized. They don't take cash, and that's all I had. The owner approved it just once, but she gave off the notion that she was irritated by my method of payment. They wrote my name on the back of someone else's receipt since I paid cash, and when my drink was ready, they called out the person name on the receipt not mine because the cashier and barista were too busy to communicate the action behind it. I finally went up and told them, that this is my drink since it had my name written on the back. She was confused so I explained to the barista and she asked the cashier person and then she said ok. It was a stressful experience, not worth my time or money. These drinks are for pictures only. There's way better matcha out there 100% sure. I will not return. read more

So we ordered the pistachio, earl gray, and coconut cloud. The pistachio and earl gray were really yummy. We all agreed the earl gray was the best one out of all the drinks we tried. Insider tip: As of the date I'm writing this, go early when they first open or you'll be waiting in a long line. As of now, they are only open Fri-Sun. It's a small place inside of a store. You don't actually go into the matcha place bc it's very small & that's where the drinks are made. You order your drinks on the side of the store where Kyoto is and then you can browse the store it's in or wait outside for your drink(s). They call you when your drink(s) are ready. The line starts outside on the street. As of now, they only have matcha drinks on the menu. I tried the banana & the vanilla bean. They also have strawberry, Earl Grey, Dubai Chocolate, Blue Sky Cloud (coconut & blue spirulina) & more. The cups are on the small side. It looked like all the drinks are iced. The drinks are pretty and made with excellent quality matcha. The vanilla bean cold foam I think it was (on top of the matcha in the vanilla bean drink) is delicious! The staff was nice & helpful.
