We stopped by Kyoto because I'm a huge matcha girl, and honestly, I really wanted to love this place because the whole concept is SO cute! It's a little matcha shop with a store attached that I believe is kind of a thrift store but also has some original pieces, which I thought was really fun. The aesthetic is super cute, they have a little Photo Booth with black-and-white pictures, and overall it's definitely a really fun place to take pictures and hang out for a bit. The girls working were also super nice and helpful! They were really sweet and made the experience better, so I definitely want to give them credit for that. Unfortunately, the matcha itself just wasn't my favorite. I typically LOVE matcha, but this one was really strong and tasted pretty grassy to me. They have so many cute and creative flavors that sound amazing, but I felt like the matcha was so powerful that it kind of overpowered the other flavors. I will say that once the foam mixed into the drink, it tasted a LOT better. I just wish the foam itself had a little more flavor because I think that would've helped balance everything out. Another thing to note is that it was SO hot inside. It was around 100° outside when we went, and there were only fans inside, so it honestly wasn't the most comfortable environment to sit and enjoy a drink. For the price point, I also expected the flavors to come together a little better. Matcha can definitely be an acquired taste, but I feel like they could tone down the strength of the matcha just a little so the other flavors have more of a chance to come through. I tried the banana biscoff matcha, but they have a bunch of other fun and unique flavor options including Dubai chocolate and blue coconut. The drink presentation was very pretty, as their cups are super cute! The banana foam, biscoff syrup, and biscoff crumbles tasted good, but the matcha itself had an unusually thick texture. I have been wanting to check out Kyoto Coast Matcha since it popped up on my FYP a couple months ago and was really excited when they re-opened in Little Italy. Kyoto Coast Matcha shares a space with a boutique store which was super cute. Parking can be a pain in Little Italy especially on a Saturday but was really lucky to find street parking a block away. There was a little bit of a line when we came by but it went by pretty quickly. All matchas are $9 which I find to be a little bit on the pricier side but not out of the norm and they do not have dairy milk, I think they had either almond or oat milk, so very friendly for those who can't do dairy milk. I ordered the Earl Grey Matcha, I am an avid matcha drinker and love Earl Grey tea so I definitely wanted to combine the two. The barista was really friendly and they were definitely busy but my drink came out in good time. The barista mentioned they make this with an Earl Grey syrup. I was a little disappointed that I found the matcha was bitter, the water may have been a little too hot when they were whisking it because that was not the best matcha I have had. I came in for their soft opening yesterday after revamping this location and man! To start off with, when you're waiting for your order, they share a space with a consignment type business so you can browse little trinkets and secondhand clothes while you wait. My drink was sooo delicious. I decided to try the Blue Sky Cloud Matcha and I'm still dreaming about it. The blue foam was to die for and of course their matcha is ceremonial grade so you know it's the best quality. The Holy Grail of Matcha Lattes with Unmatched Service! I so rarely post reviews, but my experience at Kyoto Coast Matcha today was too incredible not to share. I ordered the Double Matcha and the Earl Grey Matcha, and both were delicious. The real kicker is that their non-dairy matcha tastes even better than the dairy versions I normally get! What blew me away even more was the staff. They are beyond kind. When I accidentally spilled one of my drinks trying to put the lid on, they were so comforting and understanding because they could see how terrible I felt. I've never experienced such amazing customer service. This place is a total gem and a must-visit. Please bring them your business! Value Tip for Matcha Lovers: 1/2 teaspoon of the matcha is 70mg caffeine which is about one standard cup of coffee or 2 espresso shots. Most matcha powders I've come across are 25-35mg, so I tend to use them up pretty quickly to get my coffee cup's worth. Recently vacationed to San Diego and Kyoto Coast Matcha was another must visit for my best friend. I do love matcha so this was a welcomed suggestion! She had heard of them from Tik Tok and it's clear that they've gone viral because we were in a line of about 30 people deep and from the time we got in line to the time we got our drinks, it was about an hour. You've been warned! The line was intense but they clearly take their time on crafting each cup of matcha which I appreciate. The service was super kind too, so overall it really wasn't too frustrating to have to wait. There were quite a few delicious sounding options but I ended up going with the Vanilla Bean Matcha. All of the drinks were priced at $9 which I guess is a little steep, but whatever. The Vanilla Bean is delicious! The vanilla bean foam is thick, creamy, and the perfect amount of sweetness and flavor. It's super creamy so it's a little challenging to mix it all in, but once they're combined it's delicious. Kyoto Coast Matcha is a pop-up counter inside a boutique furniture maker in a corner suite of the Little Italy neighborhood. They currently operate between 9:30 am and 1:00 pm on Friday through Sunday. Perhaps they will expand these limited hours because there is almost always a wait to place an order. A few small round tables for seating were placed on the sidewalk in front of the building. I found a curbside space about two blocks away and walked over to join a queue of about a dozen customers. A two-sided poster on a sidewalk stand held the menu in which each of the eight drinks were priced at $9. All of the cold foams were noted to be dairy free. Six of the choices were creative concoctions with an artist's drawing of how the drink looked. I intended to pick one of the two simple selections when I discovered there was a seasonal variety listed on a menu stand at the service counter. The Guava Matcha was the spring offering which was what I bought. There were several baristas preparing orders. It took about 30 minutes from the time I entered the line to when I received my drink. Ceremonial grade matcha was layered on top of regular milk with guava syrup on the bottom of the cup. I was told to stir the contents well before drinking. While I was in San Diego, I wanted to check out several matcha spots which included Kyoto Coast Matcha. When I walked in, the staff was very friendly and had great energy. I'm a sucker for floral matcha drinks so when I saw the Earl Grey Matcha, I couldn't refuse. I loved the color of my matcha and I could taste the earl grey. Kyoto Coast Matcha is a vibe! Black owned! It's a pop up in Little Italy that serves matcha drinks with personality. I was able to grab one when I went as part of a partnership between Black Girls Who Walk SD, Kyoto Coast Matcha and Board & Boujee. I had the Vanilla Bean Dream and it was such a good mix of matcha and vanilla. I've never had those two flavors together so I'm glad I could try it out. They had lots of other options that I want to try. They have a Strawberry Matcha I am interested in. There were two sets of seating outside. Two tables and 4 chairs. There is also a concrete bench outside. This is Little Italy so don't forget that the parking is sparse. The event was early before the store opened. When we returned from the walk around 11am, there was a line of at least 10 people. So get there right when they open if you don't want to stand in line. Make sure to check the hours too. It's a pop up so it's not open every hour of the day. I was very pleased to hear that they plan on opening a shop in La Jolla. I'll be so excited to check it out once it opens. read more

I visited SD for the weekend & LOVE matcha, so visiting this popup was one of the things I was most excited about. I found out about it on TikTok. It's a very cute space. This spot's located inside of a boutique that sells clothing, accessories, jewelry, home decor, and quirky, eclectic little pieces. It was fun to explore a bit while I waited for my drink. The line wasn't excessively long, but I believe I waited over 30 minutes. My friend doesn't drink matcha, so shoutout to her for patiently waiting with me, lol. On the plus side, it was a gorgeous day, & I could get shade by just standing in the boutique. I just had to move around a lot because it was crowded & people constantly needed to get by because space was tight. I love that the menu poster is so large & colorful, making it easy to pick your order before you approach the ordering counter. I went with the vanilla dream matcha because I love vanilla DOWN, but didn't realize until that moment that I've not seen many cafes offer vanilla bean options. This actually may be the first. I've been here on two separate occasions! The first time I ordered the Blue Sky Cloud Matcha. It was more pretty than it was flavorful. It was a nice and soft flavor profile, but personally I didn't like the coconut flakes in the drink. It was yummy, but I didn't realize it came with it so that's on me. Aside from that, I feel like the foam was over shining the entire drink. I wished I had asked for extra matcha. The second time I came, I ordered the guava matcha & cookies n cream matcha. The cookies n cream overpowered any matcha taste that could've been in the drink. It was very creative though! The milk tasted like the cream of an oreo cookie. The guava matcha tasted more like papaya to me. It did have a matcha taste in this drink though. The atmosphere is so cute. I love all of the clothes that surrounds the cafe, but most of all the photo booth is my favorite. I believe it's about $8 for 2 strips. The parking is street parking only, so it may be a bit limited. The service the first time I came, they were very sweet to me. Nothing felt rushed which was nice. The second time around I had asked if I could get extra matcha in my drink. They told me "our drinks are already pretty strong," but based on the last time I went, I did not really get that matcha taste I was looking for. I told the girl that it was okay, especially because I don't mind paying for extra! She then said "no, we use the maximum amount of matcha in our drinks" I can't remember what number she said, but it didn't sound right. I heard 90mg, which I know she definitely did not say. I love that matcha is becoming more and more popular so I had to check out this new spot. It's a black owned business. They are located in the heart of little Italy. Open Fri- Sunday until 1pm. Because of the short hours the line is long. It took about 40 mins on Saturday around 11am. The aloe matcha caught my eyes since I haven't seen it anywhere else. It's refreshing. My husband and I love Kyoto Coast. I went there when they were a pop-up and hoped that they would become a permanent presence in San Diego. Fortunately, they will be opening three locations this summer. We went to the first day of their soft opening and had their double matcha, strawberry matcha, and blue sky cloud matcha. Our favorite was the double matcha which was a perfect balance of bitter, umami, and sweet. The strawberry matcha had a good balance of sweetness with real strawberry flavor that complimented the strong matcha flavor while the blue sky cloud had more a more mellow flavor of coconut that contrasted well with the sweet marshmallow pieces. We loved our drinks so much that we returned the next day to try the Earl Grey matcha and guava matcha, both of which combined their flavors well, with the Earl Grey having a more subtle flavor compared to the fruitiness of the guava. Meeting Brittany, the owner, was a highlight of our visit. Knowing it's a family-owned, BIPOC-owned business made supporting them feel even more meaningful.
