This review is based on my most recent visit, though I've been to Kyoto multiple times before. At this point, I might have tried every non-veg sushi on their menu. I still haven't explored their Asian food options because I can never get enough of their sushi. The consistency in taste is incredible; every single time. Whether it's a weekday or a weekend, be prepared to wait in line. Once, I even waited two hours to get in. My parents live nearby, so every time I visit Bastrop, this is my go-to spot. Their mochi just hits differently after a meal. The ambience is simple, and the tables are placed close together due to how busy they always are. But trust me, you won't care about the cutesy aesthetics when the sushi tastes Michelin-level.

Another great sushi experience. We started to try different items but gravitated to our old favorites; therefore no new pictures. Tried a different sushi restaurant last week since Kyoto's was closed. By far Kyoto's is the Best in Town. Not only the food but the ambiance as well, and the service as always perfection.

Party of 7. Food was acceptable but not quality I expect. Although the food looked nice it was missing flavor. I've been here about 5 years ago and the food was really good. I read the recent reviews before I went and I saw people comment that the place wasn't as good as it used to be, and unfortunately they are right. I had the bento box. I was disappointed with the quality of the beef. It had a strange gritty texture. The rest of the party said the food was just ok. Service & Atmosphere We arrived about 8:45 pm. They are open until 9:30. But we felt rushed the entire time. At first the server wanted us to order fast which I understood due to the time. But then they brought the check right when they served the food, which is tacky. Then by 9:25pm the workers were all lined up behind us waiting. They had already cleaned the rest of the restaurant (it's very small). I think they should close at 9 if the staff expects to leave at 9:30pm. Therefore, the atmosphere was uncomfortable and the service was rushed. I will not eat here again. I had 2 out of town visitors in addition to my family and this place was not impressive.

Great service and wonderful sushi. We have been coming here with regular frequency for a number of years and always enjoy sharing with friends and family.

Well I am not from here and I was in the mood for some hibachi. I decided to give this place a try. Everything tastes great and they have a friendly staff. Everything from the soup to the hibachi steak had great flavors! I will eat here again next time I pass through!

We're Orange County transplants, spoiled on great sushi. We literally would not have considered buying in Bastrop if it didn't have a sushi restaurant. When we first came here, we were surprised to see that half the sushi rolls contain cream cheese, bento box options include General Tso's chicken, and the meno includes eggrolls and hot and sour soup. But that's not to say they don't also offer great Japanese food. You could say it's fusion, but I think they just include popular Chinese dishes because they aren't sure Bastrop is fully ready for full-on Japanese. But I anticipate that, before too long, they'll feel comfortable enough to go full Kyoto. And their true Japanese dishes actually are pretty good, I must say. They have hibachi, nigiri, sashimi, teriyaki, seaweed salad, edamame, gyoza, tempura, udon, sake... the things you look for in a good Japanese restaurant (not just sushi). This visit, we ordered a tempura appetizer and three entrees (one each): a chirashi bowl, teriyaki chicken, and a salmon combo platter. All were very good. And also shared a bottle of Tyku sake. The chirashi included ten pieces of sashimi, comprised of yellowtail, redfish, salmon and tuna. They were all very good. The tuna was great, actually. The teriyaki was well-prepared. The sauce wasn't too thick or sweet, and had a nice teriyaki flavor. Teriyaki should be about mirin and soy sauce, not about high fructose corn syrup, and they get that. Our son, who has been to Japan and actually speaks Japanese, enjoyed his salmon combination, which included a salmon roll, a spicy salmon roll, and nigiri. The service was surprisingly good. I was quite impressed. They were extremely attentive, observant, and helpful. Prices are what I expect for Japanese food. No complaints. And I'd quickly give them five stars if they dropped the Chinese dishes and elevated Bastrop to being a city with an authentic Japanese restaurant, which they're perfectly capable of. I mean, we like Chinese food as much as anyone, but we already have a nice Chinese option in town. We're used to having many distinct types of Japanese and Chinese restaurants to choose from (ramen, sushi, udon, hibachi, Japanese street food, Szechuan, dim sum, noodle houses, Hong Kong BBQ, etc). And we're just not sure why there's a need to put Chinese and Japanese food on the same menu. That said, we'll continue coming here. And during peak hours, there's often a wait for a table, so it's clear that what they're doing today is resonating. But maybe, as the wait times get longer, they'll start transitioning to what it seems they really want to be... not "Asian," but distinctly Japanese.

Great sushi spot! Everything tasted fresh- we will definitely come back to try more items from the menu next time! I will be ordering the ocean salad again because it came with such a good amount of fish and we really loved it with the cucumbers underneath. Service was quick and friendly!!

We were looking for a place to grab some sushi before heading to the airport & Kyoyo's popped up. I'm so glad we went in! The service was spot on, and all of our requests were handled quickly. We ordered: Gyoza, Egg rolls, super crunchy roll, Dancing Mango roll & a Philly Roll. All were excellent & plated beautifully! Nice ambiance in the restaurant too! Bastrop's sushi house is SUPERB each and every time we visit! Do yourself a favor and NOT miss the: Onion Soup - slightly spicy dark broth with shaved mushrooms, fried onions, and a sprinkle of chive. Tuna Tower (shareable appetizer) - stacked white rice, crab salad, spicy tuna, sliced avocado, fresh tuna cubes, and a generous, bright sprinkle of orange roe., allll sitting on a plate decorated with three sauces. Tear it down, bite-by-bite, or mix it up and eat it. Either way, Heaven! All the sushi is fresh and made-to-order. If you're not into sushi, there are a ton of grilled or fried traditional choices. My personal non-sushi meal: Veggie Tempura without broccoli. Light and delicious . . Sweet potato, zucchini, onion . . And I just love the dipping sauce! See you soon at Kyoto!! read more

Easiest 5 star rating for a restaurant. I'm honestly so sad that I grew up right outside of Bastrop and didn't realize this restaurant existed until recently. The sushi is such high quality and tastes so fresh and not fishy at all. What I missed to take a picture of was the Kyoto Ocean Salad which is ridiculously delicious and refreshing. The orange chicken is the perfect amount of spicy and citrusy without being too sweet. The spicy salmon is definitely spicy but stupid good. The restaurant can get pretty busy, but the servers are really nice and will seat you as soon as they can. The inside is kinda small, but really clean and cute. If you ever find yourself in this small Texas town, PLEASE do yourself a favor and stop by. read more

I am at Kyoto probably every 2 weeks or so. Yes, it's the only sushi restaurant in Bastrop, but they have great food and friendly service. I love that they also have some 'no-rice' rolls for when I'm trying to keep the carbs at bay. Some of my favorites are the the Cowboy Roll, American Dream Roll, the Bastrop Roll, calamari appetizer, Cucumber Naruto Roll (No Rice), Summer Breeze (no rice)...the list goes on. We've also tried their Bento boxes as well and wow that is a deal for all that food! read more

Stopped here on New Year's Eve. The staff was really friendly. We had the salmon tower, (sorry I can't remember the names of the rolls but I remember the numbers!) #9, #11, #15. Definitely enjoyed all of it. #15 was my favorite. I'm just glad we have good sushi place in Bastrop. I'm thinking I'll be back soon! read more

Service has suffered greatly and it wouldn't be so bad, if they actually cared but their attitude is unprofessional and indifferent to their customers experience. It is only a matter of time before another sushi restaurant will open in Bastrop and then maybe they will show some true concern for their customers. It's not right when someone that works in a restaurant makes light of a customer's request to speak to a manager and then nobody acts upon it. It comes across demeaning to that customer when people jest as if they waiter is the manager and no one will oblige the request. The previous staff would never allow a partially served table to happen especially when the person that is being honored is the one watching everybody eat for well over 10 minutes. Unacceptable no matter how many apologies and excuses are rendered. read more

We were in the Bastrop area for the Sherwood Forest Renaissance Faire. We found Kyoto sushi restaurant and we were very happy we did. The restaurant was nicely decorated and had TVs to keep up with the game. The staff was super nice and there was a lot of them . They kept the tables cleared constantly of all the dishes we were emptying. The staff was very attentive. The food was very good and came out nice and hot and beautifully arranged. The prices were very reasonable. There were a lot of different kinds of sushi. It was so good. We went back a second time the next night. read more

This place is pretty legit. I think it's a Chinese and Japanese restaurant. I ordered the Yummy Yummy roll and it was so good. I inhaled it. We also got hot and sour soup and that was good too. No complaints. My bf got teriyaki chicken. With all chicken breast, it's usually dry so it's not their fault. I would come back here if I ever find myself in Bastrop again. read more

We love this place. One of our favorite eating out haunts in Bastrop. Great service and fabulous food. The restaurant is small but it's cozy and not overcrowded. A little pricey, but has the best Asian food around. It's worth the drive if you're an out of towner. read more

UPDATE JAN 2020: my husband and I come here once a week! They've mastered what they do and service is always fantastic. And there are alcohol options now as well :) Visited this place Sunday at 6p. , with no wait time. Place didn't have its alcohol license yet , so we ordered unsweetened tea. Taste fine. The servers are still learning ,but they were friendly. Crab puffs and egg rolls tasty and perfectly crispy. Nothing spectacular about California roll, but it was good. general Tso was surprise stand out of the night. Cooked better than all of the other restaurants I've visited in Bastrop that also offer this dish. entree comes with side of fried rice. read more

My partner and I literally could not stop saying how delicious this sushi was. We got the Yummy Yummy roll, the Summer Braze roll, the Cucumber Naruto roll, and the Amazing Tuna roll as well as an order of the Calamari. It was so good, we almost teared up. Seriously, go. Something is definitely off lately. Server seemed confused. Brought wrong dishes and our table all received their correct food at different times. Food was NOT what it has been. Teriyaki beef was cubed and no sauce. That is not how Kyoto has served it. General Tso and Honey Chicken appeared to be straight outta HEB frozen food section. Service was friendly and place seemed clean. But the NOT the Kyoto we have loved. read more

Kyoto sushi is my goto lunch order while living in Bastrop. I would say I have ordered deliver two dozen times and I am happy with the sashimi quality. I usually get the same thing which is Salmon or Tuna Sashimi and a single roll. I have tried a number of rolls and the Monster Roll is my current favorite. I'm not ranking as 5 stars because the roll variety is a little odd. Seems like 80% of the rolls are deep fried or made with cream cheese. Both of these options I am sure can be tasty, but I would prefer a few more creative options without cream cheese or dunked in oil. read more

I'm updating my review. Years later, I gave Kyoto another shot. I paid about $30 for the chef's sashimi & sushi combo special and the sashimi delivered. The California roll was pretty average and basic but the sashimi earned another star. However, I can never give Kyoto 5 stars based on how overpriced it is. It's not just overpriced for Bastrop, it's somehow overpriced for Austin. To be clear, I will never spend money on another sushi roll at Kyoto ever again. The positive review is for the sashimi only. read more

I used to eat here all the time and the salmon nigiri was always good and fresh... the other day I came in and got my usual salmon nigiri... it was not fresh... I had to spit the first piece out and did not eat the other 3 pieces. I was still charged for it even though I didn't eat it. I won't be back unless I hear from the owner. read more

The staff are attentive and friendly! When I moved to TX I was not sure if I'd find a good sushi place but I was pleasantly surprised! The rice is soft but still sticks, they have a lot of options (including bento boxes if you don't like raw fish), and the tempura is crispy. It's also really cute inside! Give it a go read more

I was in the hospital getting ready for surgery It was basically my last meal and my aunt wanted to surprise me with my favorite place. They were closed my aunt knocked on the door, they opened and said sorry were closed, she explained why she was there practically begged them. Do you kno he went in and made all my favorite things and brought them too her and then said no charge! I was pleasantly surprised to find good sushi in Bastrop! Must try the Bastrop roll-- 10 out of 10! Spicy Girl Roll was a close second. The tables were clean, and spaced at least 6 feet apart and all the employees wore masks. Highly recommend Kyoto Sushi. Service was good and food came out in a timely manner. The wagyu sando wasn't quite what I expected, since the meat had more of a patty-like texture that I didn't think paired especially well with the milk bread. The wagyu donburi had a nice layer of crispy rice at the bottom after mixing, but there were too many sour and pickled components, which threw off the balance of the dish a little. Overall, Tenten is a solid spot, especially once you know which menu items you like. Service can be a bit hit or miss, but nothing bad enough to keep me from coming back.

There was Wagyu on the menu, which they seamlessly substituted for me without hesitation, and they also accommodated my pineapple allergy with zero issues. The attention to detail started well before the first bite. Guests are invited to arrive about 30 minutes early to complete check-in and participate in the pre-omakase ritual. After checking in, we were seated in the waiting area and served a refreshing non-alcoholic ginger beverage, followed by canape service. We were given 2 beautifully prepared bites as we waited to transition into the full experience. It set the tone perfectly. Once guided into the omakase room, we were greeted with a handwritten wooden name plaque at our seat, a small but thoughtful touch that immediately made the evening feel personal. With only a 10-seat counter, the experience is incredibly intimate. The chefs introduced themselves, and we were presented with the beverage options. Two of us opted for the Japanese whisky pairing, while another chose the sake pairing, both excellent complements to the meal. Before the first piece even hit the counter, the chefs revealed the night's journey on the wall: 16 wooden plaques, each hand-lettered with the names of pristine fish and indulgent bites. It reads like a quiet flex on hamachi, madai, akami, toro, A5 wagyu where each course waiting its turn. It's a reminder that omakase isn't about choice but about surrender. One detail that truly stood out was how effortlessly accommodating they were. When my dietary restriction came up again, the Wagyu substitution was handled with no hesitation, no awkwardness--just a seamless adjustment that still felt intentional and indulgent. Throughout the meal, the chefs chatted with us as they prepared each course, explaining the fish, techniques, and flavor profiles. The interaction felt warm and natural, and the intimate setting made it easy to connect not only with the chefs but also with the guests seated next to us. Overall, this was an unforgettable experience from start to finish. I would highly recommend Sushi by Scratch to anyone who truly loves omakase. I'm already thinking about doing this again next time at their LA location when I get back home.

I visited Kyoto Sushi in Bastrop and had a really great experience overall. Between the food, service, atmosphere, and value, it's definitely a place I'll be coming back to. I started with the calamari topped with imitation crab. The crab and sauces were delicious and packed with flavor. My only criticism is that the calamari itself seemed a little overcooked, which made it tougher than I prefer and took away from the overall texture. The flavors were there, but I wasn't able to fully enjoy the calamari because of the breading and chewiness. The highlight of the meal was a sushi roll topped with steak (I wish I could remember the name!). It was honestly one of the best sushi rolls I've ever had. The steak was incredibly tender, the sushi was fresh, and everything was well-balanced and flavorful. I would come back for that roll alone. The service was excellent from start to finish. The staff was attentive, friendly, and made the experience enjoyable without being intrusive. To top it off, I enjoyed two glasses of Pinot Grigio while watching My Hero Academia, and my entire bill came in under $42. That's hard to beat for the quality and quantity of food I received. As someone spending time in Bastrop, I've been impressed by how much the area is growing, and Kyoto Sushi is another great example of a local spot worth supporting. I'll definitely be back. I asked Chef and owner Cong Wang what his best roll was and he said "Fuji Mountain. Looked like little mountains. But it was a little sweet for my taste. I liked the saggy dog.Then another twelve pieces of mix sushi. Our bill came to sixty dollars. Not bad for sushi. Décor is top notch and modern.
