I had my doubts when I entered this place for dinner. It was really quiet, no music, slightly dim and a bit gloomy. There were two other patrons in the restaurant when we arrived around 5:30pm on a Sunday. The staff is really friendly and nice. I believe it's a mom and her young daughter. I loved seeing her daughter help out with enthusiasm..it was great for my kids to see! We ordered sushi, rice and noodles. All were surprisingly good. The sushi was fresh and presented beautifully. We ordered the house special noodles which has all the meat and seafood - great flavor and you can taste the "wok hei" in it which means the wok was heated well. The salmon teriyaki with vegetables was good. Too saucy for me but blend it with the rice and it was a good. They do charge for hot tea which I wasn't used to as many establishments we go to at home provide it like water. Overall, good service, attentive and the food was good. read more

Let me start out with saying I can't speak about the ambiance because we didn't eat there in person. We got take out. My boyfriend picked up the food but he said the person giving him it was really nice so that's a plus! The good part - the food! This sushi was super yummy. We got 2 orders of the smoked salmon roll and added avocado to them (really recommend). Just so you know - it's because we usually get the "Alaskan roll" but around us (Norwich, CT) the Alaska roll has smoked salmon and avocado and more. Not sure why. But it's super different here. The fish tasted fresh and smoky but not so smoky you couldn't taste anything else. The veggies were fresh too. I will say that the rice was much softer than we're used to having? I'm not sure if it's always like that since this was our first time ordering here but it was definitely noticeably soft. So just be aware of that since I've never had my rice that mushy? It was still yummy - just threw us off. I do really really recommend the specialty Colorado Roll (chicken tempura, spicy tuna, spicy crab, eel sauce, sweet chili sauce, spicy Mayo, and "crunch"). It sounds like a lot and is a lot but it's so good! It was the star of the show even though we were just being experimental in ordering it. It had all the right things. Chicken and raw fish might seem weird but actually go for it if you have the money! (This one is pricy at around $18+tax). My boyfriend did enjoy his California roll but it was a normal one of course. And I really liked my sweet potato roll cause I love the crispy sweet salty flavors. If you haven't tried a sweet potato roll yet - you really gotta! Even if you're usually all in it for the fish! As an appetizer we got two orders of gyoza - one pork and one kung pao chicken. They were both really good. The kung Pao chicken was surprisingly delicious. I don't recommend the sauce they give you as it just tasted like soy sauce with garlic but honestly both gyozas stood out by themselves. Juicy on the inside and crisp on the outside. The kung Pao chicken one was the best and most fun gyoza I've had. It is savory and has a bit of a kick so there's a heads up if you're sensitive to spice. Altogether I'd give the place a 4.5. Minus .5 for the kinda mushy rice but good once you get past the texture differences! Sorry my photos are mostly in their takeout containers! We dug in super quickly haha. read more

Ok, I admit that I've only had takeout a couple of times and it's always some sort of poke bowl (poki bowl on the menu here). But, I've had several recently and these are just fresher and better! Everything in it is perfectly ripe (cukes, tomatoes, mango) and the shrimp and salmon were fresh and delicious, with a good amount in the bowl. The sauce is perfect and has a tiny kick to it, and you get extra on the side in case you want to add more (though I haven't needed to but appreciate that I can if I want to). Both times I ran in to pickup my food staff was friendly, welcoming and attentive. The inside is not fancy or anything but is comfortable and all you need when the food is that good! I'd rather the energy be put into my food than a place to look stunning then the food disappoint. So, I'll be back whenever I'm in the New London area looking for good sushi! I go visit my friend in New London every week or two, so they'll definitely see me again as I'm definitely impressed with the quality of the food! It's not the cheapest bowl I've had, but it's worth the extra money and the bowl is filled to the rim...you know, you get what you pay for! It was 5:45 on a Thursday. I walk in and there are no customers. It strongly smells of some cleaning agent. Like super strong. I like that's it's clean but you think it would have been done hours ago to avoid the dinner crowd...me. I sat at one of the many open tables and ordering was funny and cute with the young family member. Some weird anime cartoon was on with chill music. I guess "cartoon" is incorrect as it was not a motion screen. After watching that for a few minutes, a kids cartoon came on. Oh joy. At this point, I'm thinking it's more a takeout joint but the Yelp stars has kept me here. I ordered seaweed salad since they came out to tell me know iceberg for a garden salad. That's pretty standard appetizer. I also ordered a side of edamame. That too came out pretty standard and as expected. My Massachusetts role was a bit disappointing though. The tuna was definitely not fresh as in today tuna. It lacked flavor and somewhat dried out. Honestly, I ate it anyhow and with ginger, wasabi and soy sauce it was ok. I was a regular but after covid I had not been at the restaurant for a while. I think we ordered out one day but I think I have not had their sushi for at least 20 months. I was there last Sunday with my sister. Every single roll we tried was so good and filled nicely. I love my rolls not to fall apart when you pick it up and that is one thing they do right. I was in heaven with every taste. I had the new Mexico roll; New Hampshire roll; Rhode Island roll; and Iowa Roll. The owner is always pleasant and remembers us. I didn't look at it closely, so I popped it in my mouth to savor the flavor, instead I got regular tuna taste. When I went back to look at the photos, that's when I noticed that it was a regular tuna slice. I should have complained then. But I was having a good time with my daughter. If I could give this place a 3.5 instead of a 3 I would and here's why. The spot itself is in a plaza so it's easy to find and easy to park at. I went for lunch and at the time that I was there three other tables were also being served and or eating. There seemed to be just one waitress and one chef that were working during lunch service. The problem with that is that service was incredibly slow (we waited 40 minutes for our first appetizer). The servers themselves were incredibly nice but it just felt like if they had one more staff member working they would be in a much better spot with time management. Came across this restaurant when we had a hankering for some sushi! A long sushi menu with plenty of options! The prices here were much more reasonable than other locations in the area, that's what drew us here over other locations. The menu is however a little limited, but it's perfect if your in the mood for sushi or a noodle bowl. The service was wonderful, is a small restaurant and the mom and daughter team reminded us of that family small town restaurant vibes. It felt good to leave a good tip and appreciated the warm welcomes and sincere goodbyes. Ambiance in the restaurant was a little subdued, it was quiet with standard booths, it could use some ambient music or some wall art to mute the staff working sounds.. that would be my only constructive feedback. However the food was excellent. We had a couple rolls ranging from $8-$10, the dumplings were ok but the house combo noodle bowl was really flavorful and delicious. It was forgettable. The dumpling sauce was really chilled. But dip one freshly fried gyoza in there and you're all set temperature wise. They have special sushi rolls named after every state. Honestly they all tend to be the same minus one ingredient or plus one. But I had two special rolls and they definitely hit the spot. As well as two pieces of white tuna sashimi. There is nothing spectacular or tremendously poor about Kyoto Sushi. But give them a try. The seaweed salad is also tasty. I now order takeout online from here often, probably about once a week since then. It's always ready on time and bagged nicely with chops sticks and soy sauce. I like that they package their specialty rolls individually because I frequently over order, so it's easy to save a roll for later in the day that way! Shout out to my Yelper boyfriend who found this place while perusing through Yelp! Sushi is one of my favorite foods. You know when you can't figure out what to eat, you just know you want to eat something? This happens to me a lot and whenever it does, sushi always hits the right spot. This is why the tearing down of Ju Sushi was all the more tragic. Thankfully, Kyoto Sushi answered Groton's desperate cries for a new sushi restaurant. I was initially a little skeptical about a place that offered sashimi for $1.50/piece. It seemed too good to be true but upon skimming through the menu, everything was relatively cheap! Hibachi, minus the live-action pyro and soju demonstration, was under $10. Sushi rolls were less than $10 but the "specialty rolls" were $11. I ended up ordering the Rainbow Roll ($9) and the chicken hibachi with fried rice ($7). While I wouldn't give the quality of the fish an A+, it still deserves a solid B. My boyfriend ordered an assortment of sashimi and was pleasantly surprise by how thick each piece was. Hibachi was good except the fried rice was more like white rice tossed in teriyaki sauce. Overall, the food was tasty and at these prices, I can't really complain about anything. The restaurant itself is very clean and the service was super attentive and friendly.
