Don't underestimate this little restaurant because of it's size. I can promise you that you will be satisfied with anything you try. I have been ordering to gif or years when they were even smaller at their other location. Their small menu ensures quality is delivered with every bite. On this pick up I was in a hurry but will take extra pictures next time. I can say I have always been very happy with everything I've tried. The owner is so energetic and funny I love to come in and chat with him when I can. He cheers me up all the time. Perfect service no matter how busy he is. Besides ordering to go they do have sitting area inside with a few tables and a nice outdoor table too. Parking is limited but you can always park at BigY parking lot if necessary and walk down. However I have never had to do this. Enjoy!

So I have enjoyed sushi all over this nation from Maine to Hawaii. And JU-sushi is a hole in the wall location that provides a solid product for the price. It is a solid 3.5 to 4 star. I had their regular sushi bento box with two extra pieces of sushi. I got a good value for my money. The salmon was buttery but I wished it had a little more taste. However it was enjoyable and was very consumable. This place may not have the ambiance of a fancy sushi restaurant like in Huntington beach CA, but I don't eat ambiance, I eat sushi. JU sushi does just that, they give you good sushi. The wall of grateful graffiti shows you just how much JU sushi is appreciated by its clients. That wall of gratitude gave the extra 1/2 star for me. I for one can be counted as an appreciative client. It isn't fancy, but it's well worth your time to try JU Sushi out. Bon appetite!

OMAKASE! OMAKASE! OMAKASE! Ask Mr. Ju when he can host you and your small party for omakase. It is an amazing experience for sushi lovers and it's really fun to see a chef just doing what he loves. Think of it as your own private sushi party with a fancy and unique selection of seafood. It's a TON of food and a lot of fun so it's well worth price. We had 7 very different very delicious courses. The employees are very kind and personable. The restaurant is cute in a cozy/comfortable way. Don't let it's humble appearance and styrofoam plates scare you away! The sushi is really fresh and delicious plus the omakase includes hot food and dessert too. The omakase experience really blew me away. I highly recommend for your party of 5-10 people! My favorite was the toro or monkfish liver but the unagi rice bowl was a big crowd pleaser as well.

Edit: I have returned to try the nigiri. And I can now confirm that this is the best sushi spot in Groton and New London. Don't go to Sushi Kawa, don't go to Kyoto Steakhouse. This is it. Eating the nigiri allows one to truly taste the fish as it is not covered by sauces like spicy mayo or doused in soy sauce. The fish freshness here is better than all the sushi places around here; no competition. Good sushi. The rice was soft and at a good temperature. The quality of fish in the rolls was not bad. They have both traditional simple rolls and more americanized ones. I have eaten at many sushi restaurants/omakases in NY and Philly. And I can say that this place is not bad at all. It is definitely the best sushi you can get in Groton. I wouldn't go anywhere else for sushi around the area than here. Will be returning to try the nigiri.

Mr. Ju is one of the sweetest chefs I have met. He is a very talented sushi chef and was super kind enough to have 7 of us make a reservation to do Omakase. I would call in advance to make a reservation with 6-12 people, so that Mr. Ju has time to order all the ingredients for the Omakase. It was like having our own private chef making dishes for us, and we were very full by plate number 3 or 4. He was very generous with the price for the huge amount and super high quality of food he made us. The fish was very fresh and sliced very nicely. I was so full at the end, I couldn't do anything afterwards. My favorites were the toro, monkfish liver, the seafood soup, and the ikura (salmon roe) sushi. Even the dessert course was very delicious! I definitely will come back here the next time I visit Groton.

Was a little disappointed in the steak teriyaki though. I should have remembered from ordering before but whomever the chef is, they like to load up the Tupperware with so much sauce it's like a soup. Drenching the vegetables under the steak. I wound up pouring out all that liquid to eat the vegetables. Although Ib think someone bought an excess of zucchini and not enough carrots as there seemed to be more zucchini and very few carrots and broccoli. The zucchini was cut into LARGE pieces which made it hard to eat. I like the restaurant so still 4 stars and the food is tasty. Just wish they would use less sauce and better cut/prep the vegetables.

They had a discount if you spent $60 you'll get 10% off. I went to pick up the food and it was ready when it say it would be. Inside was nicely decorated like the last time I been here. There was also plenty of seating. The host handed me the food and I was glad they separated the sushi from the hot food. We got home to eat dinner and I tried the pad Thai. I got level three and it was not spicy enough for me. Maybe next time I will get a 5. As far as the taste... there was no flavor and the noodles seem to a bit under cooked. I was expected that spicy, tamarin sour and sweet flavor that is normally in a Pad Thai but didn't get that. The potstickers and sushi were pretty good. Overall it was decent but could be better. Maybe it was an off day.

No. Being located in Connecticut versus New Orleans, Georgia, Florida or Maryland does not give you a hall pass to sell over-priced seafood that is not up to edible standards/fresh. No crab seasoning dusting AT ALL. Crab was freezer burned with grit on the shell. I got the special sauce + the hottest level. Red water. So diluted and devoid of flavor. The "boil" was literally the consistency of water. That's not a boil. They likely have pots of unseasoned water that they ladle in the bag post steaming. So bland, zero love and not at all authentic. Also-- small russet potatoes were not cleaned prior to being cooked whole and are rigid/raw in the center. Over-cooked shrimp. Boil base has ZERO flavor and likely just MSG + coloring. Disrespectful. Wrong potatoes, wrong process, wrong chef, wrong seasonings, aged crab, wrong everything. My meal was 'to go'. If dined in?! Absolutely not. Nope. I would have left it on the table! Trust me-- I'm calling my bank and if they want to FaceTime the food in the trash... fine by me. I can't eat this. There is dirt in the sauce and all of the elements because they did not clean the crab, shrimp + potatoes. There were two rotten potatoes in my bag and freezer burned snow crab clusters... disgusting. Hit "The Boil" in NYC, "Juicy Crab" in MD-- even "Hook & Reel" in Orange, CT. That's where you get real Cajun flavor profiles and actual spice! This restaurant has zero business serving seafood boils. Really, really subpar.

Even though the name (Kawa) and menu have changed a bit over time, the heart of this place has never changed--and that's what keeps us coming back. One thing that truly stands out is that this is a family‑owned restaurant, and you can feel the care, pride, and love they put into their food and service. It adds a level of warmth and authenticity that you just don't get everywhere. Our group ordered a wide range of dishes, and not a single plate was left with food on it. Several guests tried the special fried rice, while one had the chicken fried rice. Everyone loved their meals so much that I even ordered an extra fried rice to take home. We also enjoyed a great selection of sushi, including a few rolls we had never tried before. Their sushi roll prices are the best in the area, yet the quality remains consistently excellent. The sashimi we ordered was fresh, beautifully presented, and did not disappoint. One guest ordered the noodles with shrimp and said it was the best they'd ever had. To top it off, the restaurant has a surprisingly wide variety of Asian beers at very reasonable prices. The beers we tried were a big hit with the group and paired perfectly with the food. The service was another highlight of the night. Our waiter was wonderful--attentive, friendly, patient, and on top of everything our large party needed. Managing a group of 14 isn't easy, but he handled it flawlessly and made us feel well cared for. My fiancé asked him a lot of questions on some of dishes and he was very knowledgeable. After more than a decade of visiting, this birthday dinner reminded me exactly why this place has remained one of our family favorites. Delicious food, great prices, warm service, and the heart of a family‑owned business that truly values what they do. Highly recommend for both special occasions and everyday meals. There is plenty of parking for a big party and lots of space inside. They were packed and it was 5 days before Christmas.
