We love their fresh salad with the amazing ginger dressing and their Sushi is always fresh and tasty. We've been here several times and I have always stopped short of writing a review. It's always been OK but I don't like writing just OK reviews. We came in for lunch and seated ourselves. We ordered seafood miso soup, which was miso soup with one overcooked shrimp, a tiny clam and part of another mangled tiny clam that looked like it had lost a knife fight, a bit of rubbery squid, two tiny unidentifiable bits of fish and two bits of tofu. The broth was good but the seafood was underwhelming in taste and portion size. The smoked salmon sushi tasted fresh but not terribly flavorful. The eel sushi came and looked like it had backed into the same motorboat that mangled the poor clam in the seafood miso soup. I brought it to the attention of our server, who pointed out it was eel. Yes, it was eel but it was broken and incomplete. The eel never should have been served. Lazy? Unprofessional? Yes and yes. She removed it and brought another, unmolested piece that was tasty. This modest lunch could not have been simpler yet everything was less than expected or desired. We prefer patronizing local businesses but here, each time, something has been askew. Chairs, tables, the sushi bar, and window sills look old and need some deep cleaning. Dusty. Greeting: None when we came in (4 people). The teenage kid just stared at us when we came in. Had to stand there for a bit until a lady greeted us. Observing from the interactions with other customers, this is a mom-and-pop shop that locals support. Exchanges with these customers were friendly so I was willing to give it a chance. We sat down and waited a while for our menu. After a few minutes, I got up and got the menus myself for our group to look over. Menu prices were crossed off and menu were crinkled. Poor presentation. After a few minutes, the waitress/most likely owner also took our orders. She was friendly. Our food came at an appropriate time and perfect temperature. Food was really good. We had edamame (small portion for $5), miso soup ($2.50), shrimp fried rice ($15), chicken teriyaki dinner ($17.50), and shrimp tempura dinner ($17.50). Wait staff never came by to check on us during dinner. My husband kept standing up to get more napkins, get a small plate for our kids, etc. Again, my husband stood up to get our check. Our favorite new Japanese place. The sushi is good, but so are the other dishes. My 3 YO loves the udon and broth. It's a perfect kid size portion and he finishes it every time. Visiting family in Winnetka; decided on sushi for lunch. Drove to the convenient location and placed our order with the pleasant hostess. During our brief wait we were encouraged to "have a seat and relax" and offered waters or tea! Delightful! Our 10 roll/3 salad order was made promptly and every item was delicious. This is my first yelp review, and I'm sad to have to write it because Kyoto is conveniently located and the food was always fine. Unfortunately, the management treated me with such disrespect tonight that I won't be returning. My takeout order was supposed to be ready in 25-30 minutes, but, after arriving and paying, I waited for an additional 30 minutes, standing by the cash register with zero acknowledgement or attempt to check on the status of my sushi. When I explained this to the manager and asked for a partial refund, she became completely stone-faced and said she would only cancel my order. As I'd already paid, I said I'd much rather settle the issue with her than post about it on yelp, but after this interaction she literally ignored me (walked by me without acknowledging my presence as I tried to speak to her) until I finally received my food and left. A couple of the other staff members apologized to me and seemed to feel legitimately bad about the situation, but couldn't do anything to fix it. Needless to say, the manager's poor behavior ruined an otherwise decent meal and ensured I'll take my business elsewhere in the future. read more

I only ate about half the order because the sushi had a wet-dog smell to it and didn't taste good either. Well we went there again last night ( a family of 5 thing - me, sis our spouses and my Mom) and the food was somewhat less than stellar... We were having such a fine - laugh it up - time - that we really didn't notice until we talked about it later. Given our previous experiences there - the Sushi (and Chuck having a Pho craving ordered a noodle soup - which was so-so) well - the best way to say this is that it was somewhat lackluster. (Is is possible (!) that we've been spoiled by take outs from Sea Ranch???) My $13.00 King Crab Roll did not quite live up to it's name... And my Soft-Shell Crab Roll - while very tasty - they did try to stretch a small fried crab into six pieces (I would have prefered 4 pieces that were a little "meatier." And there seemed to be some Sake confusion - even though I brought in an empty Sake bottle - which I had taken home because it made for such a pretty "Bud Vase" - and because there seemed to be some confusion last time about which Sake we were ordering... which did not seem to help - confusion still prevailed... Still - the food was pretty Okay - and we had a very fine time...! I'm not trying to make excuses for them, but given that we recently have had two splendid meals there - I'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt - that Sunday is just not the best day to go out for Sushi - or fresh fish - in general - especially given the "energy crisis" (Ok - I know that's a stretch...) The multiple times I have been there, the server makes sure to stay as mute as possible and grumble should you "trouble" them for anything. Stumbled upon this nice little Japanese restaurant while on a business trip thru town. We had an almost desperate need for some fresh Asian faire and Kyoto did just great! This place is located along a main street type shopping area amongst many niche shops and little eateries. It appears to be an older, family run place, but the décor is not to that "run down" stage yet. The place was clean, even the fish tanks and turtle tank (which I was pretty enthralled with) were clean and maintained. I even visited the bathroom which is always a good indicator. We both ordered a lunch bento type box, chicken and steak. Both were substantial and fresh. The steak teriyaki that I was was fresh and perfectly cooked, and the California roll was a great side to it. This is a worthwhile lunch or dinner stop, the sushi bar looked quaint and if I am to find myself in this area again, you will probably find me at the sushi bar! read more

This had been one of my favorite lunch places until today. The food has always been fresh and good. The place itself is nothing special with so-so service. I ordered a salad and then asked for extra dressing. The server brought some in a tiny silver cup, maybe a tablespoon in there. On my bill they charged me 75 cents! When I asked the waiter to take it off he told me "no" and could not change it. I called later to ask them about this. At first they explained that is how they do things because of the expense, then they kind of apologized. I asked them if I order a hamburger with ketchup and want more ketchup should I be charged? I come here a lot and and send many friends there. I can't believe they would do this and risk losing a customer. They should watch out when Once Upon A Bagel opens next door...they are going to lose their lunch business! read more

There's only one thing I order- vegetable yaki soba and the veggie spring rolls. Comes out perfect and consistent every single time. My picky sister gives it 5 stars as well, both from a culinary standpoint and working in a korean place that served similar dishes for part of her career.
