I've been here before and had an ok experience, but this was my first time sitting in the Hibachi section and I was very disappointed. Our friends got a promotion and are leaving town, so they wanted a nice dinner to celebrate and also say goodbye. We went to Kyoto's on Thursday, 12/15/16.
On Wednesday night they had called to make reservations for Thursday and the soonest we could get in was 7:30. Totally fine, still ok for a work night. We got there at 7:25 and were seated at 7:30. There were still 6 seats open at our table and I was sitting on the end. It was 20 minutes before anyone came by to ask what we would like to drink or if we would like any appetizers. In the meanwhile, we watched the table opposite us have their Hibachi experience. Our friends were a little embarrassed it was taking so long, and I told them I was sure we were waiting for the other reservation to arrive and fill the other seats. This didn't happen until about 8:15, which is when we received our drinks. The 1 star is for the drinks, which I thought were tasty and creative (I had the Yaki-tini, which was good. I liked the seasonal pomegranate drink that my friend ordered, as well). The waiter asked if we were celebrating a special occasion, and I said we were celebrating our friend's new job. He seemed dumbfounded by that and I'll save you the suspense by saying nothing was done about our celebration the entire night.
Once the other party was seated and our table was full... We waited some more. We received appetizers at around 8:45, that's 1 hour and 15 minutes after being seated. I am a vegetarian, so I had the vegetable tempura. I thought it was done well- not too greasy, and the sweet potatoes were a good touch. The portion was good for the price and the sauce was good. By now the others at our table were getting their drinks. The waiter finally apologized for the long wait and informed us that they only have two chefs. At this point we were taking bets on when our dinner would start. We all bet hopefully and lost- our chef didn't come to our table until 9:14, 1 hour 45 min after being seated. And here's where it really went downhill.
I can understand a long wait and being understaffed, at this point I still felt the evening could be redeemed by good food and a great show.
I could tell when the chef came that he was already "done" with the evening. As he went around to confirm our orders, he started with me and did a double take. "Vegetrarian?" He asked, as if personally affronted. I confirmed it and he put two fingers to his head like a gun and pulled a trigger to fake blow his brains out. A young man from the other party said, "actually, there are two other vegetarians at the table" which I appreciated, but it shouldn't have been necessary. The vegetarian jokes continued through the dinner- aimed at me since the other two vegetarians weren't ordering from the Hibachi menu.
Our chef did very odd jokes throughout. There was the "open your sexy mouth" aimed at me and my friend. We knew from other tables we had watched that he was going to throw small cooked pieces of food for us to catch with our mouths. He seemed to purposely aim low so me and my girlfriend couldn't catch, but all the men could. He kept referring to me and my friend as "sexy" this, "sexy" that, and I really could have done without it. He also said some joke about "a man with a woman is very sexy, a man with a man is very bad!" ...Whatever your beliefs about those issues, your work- and especially anything in the customer service industry- is not the place to express them. If it hadn't been for the other off-color jokes, I might have thought it was funny when he took out a squeeze doll and had it "pee" out the flames on the grill.
He didn't stick around any longer than he had to- I think the whole show was between 20-25 minutes. The other chef started with another table at the same time as ours and was still performing long after our chef had left.
All in all, the jokes felt lazy, rude and mysoginistic. I felt bad for my friends who covered the bill- they deserved a better going away dinner than that. And on top of that, it is exceptionally bad form to make a party who had reservations wait nearly 2 hours for their meal. read more
