First off, had to drive down there to get a takeout menu, because the menu on their website would not open. Took the menu home and studied it, and found some good selections. Ordered (take out) the R15, R18, and R23 rolls, the fried oyster appetizer, and the chicken katsu with katsu sauce. The order was ready when I got there. Paid $51.71 and tipped them five bucks. When I got home we unpacked the order. The sushi rolls were TINY. They managed to fit three rolls into a 5"x9" tray that looked like something you would find at the grocery store. The sushi rolls looked nice, but were super small. We began eating the meal. The oysters were good but there were only four of them. I'm thinking for ten bucks there should have been six. The chicken Katsu with Katsu sauce turned out to be PORK katsu with CURRY sauce. What a disappointment that was! The sushi rolls were tasty enough, but most of them fell apart when lifted from the tray because they were packed in there so tightly. They also managed to stuff the pickled ginger and wasabi into the same tray, just like Fred Meyer and Safeway do. The white rice was cold and dry. My rice loving son would not eat it. The wasabi was dry and crumbly. Impossible to dip or even smear onto the sushi. I highly doubt that I will go there again and waste another $50+ bucks on mediocre food that comes in tiny portions. I think this sort of place is great for Yakima! We need more cool restaurant to choose from and Kyoto definitely fits the bill. To start with, you have the option of sitting in the standard restaurant or at the teppanyaki grils. The teppanyaki grills are where you are seated around a large grill and they make everything in front of you. If you have the time and money, consider sitting at the teppanyaki grills (make a reservation). My wife and I made a reservations for 5:45pm and showed up a few minutes early. We were seated at an empty teppanyaki grill and were told that we'd have a waiter by in a few minutes. After about 10 minutes, someone showed up and took our drink and appetizer orders. We both both pop ($2.50) and also an order of the Gyoza ($6). The Gyoza (potstickers to some) were really good, but were on the smaller side - still not a bad deal for 6 potstickers for $6. They also brought out some salad (which was DRENCHED in dressing) - I was a fan, my wife was not. They also have some soup which is basically a tasty broth. At about 6:05, another 8 people showed up on a reservation and were seated next to us around the grill. They were very nice, but basically they got the same service that we did....and we ended up waiting for about 35 minutes between getting out appetizer and when the chef came out to start our meal (over an hour since we arrived). The chef, Nyonyo, was great. He had lots of fun tricks and the fancy tricks with his utensils that you like to see at this type of thing. He made us fried rice, grilled veggies, and then our entree's. Keep in mind, your food is going to have a teriyaki flavor to it, which is well done. I went with the chicken and shrimp ($22) while my better half wen with the samurai steak ($22). The other folks at our table went with the fillet mignon and shrimp, which was around $30. Our food was great, but I think I'd go with something different than the chicken. It was good, but nothing special. The shrimp were great! It came with 6 or 7 large shrimp. The samurai steak was really good. Next time, I would probably get this. It's steak with onions, peppers, and some other veggies. Portions are PLENTY and you'll probably have leftovers! I'd give this place 3.5 stars based on the wait, but since that's not an option, I'll bump it up to 4. They really ought to have standard times for grill reservations in order to avoid these painfully long waits! We could have just as easily showed up 25 minutes later and avoided wasting that time! If you make a reservation, it might be worthwhile to ask about the timing. Either way, it's a fun place to go! read more

However after being seated we were not greeted by a server to take our order for food and drink for approximately 30-45 minutes. The hibachi food and show was excellent. We arrived at 6 PM on a Tuesday night. We asked to be seated in the dining room, as opposed to the hibachi room or sushi bar, and were seated immediately. Mom ordered a scallop appetizer as her entrée since she has a small appetite. My husband and I ordered the Bento boxes. The Bento boxes are really big with a lot of food. There was probably 7 or 8 pieces of tempera so we kept giving food to mom to eat. Everything was delicious and everyone was friendly. Just a small item. They brought the appetizer for mom early on and she was done eating by the time our food arrived. Yesterday I too my Fiancé here for her 21 st Birthday. I asked what they did and they said they would sing happy Birthday and give a complimentary cake. This is a fun restaurant for hibachi food in Yakima. The food is affordable and the chef working on the hibachi grill is fun to watch. You have to wait for a while as they work through the drinks, soup and salad once the chef rolls in with the cart everything is focused on the grill. He starts off with the fire, little onion tower, fried rice and vegetables. It's fun to watch the energy in the room as the cooking starts, saki is sprayed from the bottle and small dishes of sexy sauce are served with your meal. We spent about two hours and enjoyed most of the meal. The timing between the soup, salad and grill work takes time and it can be challenging for small kids not to get bored. I'm surprised how much of the food is cooked with heavy sauces. The scallops and steak dish was really good but was finished in a teriyaki sauce that took away from the flavor. read more

This restaurants wait staff and management is horrible!!! The chefs, however, are amazing. That being said, we've had issues with our service the last 4 times we've been there! FIRST ISSUE: they didn't want to re-make our sushi after I had asked for NO AVOCADO. When I mentioned that I was allergic, they made a new roll but their attitude was bad. SECOND ISSUE: The restaurant was under manned and wait staff was taking orders to wrong customers. They tried charging us for food that we ordered BUT never received. At checkout, they argued that the food was delivered. THIRD ISSUE: We've been to this restaurant when they only have 2 chefs for the whole restaurant! We waited for hours (literally) before we got a chef to our station. When the chef arrived, he was cooking at TWO GRIDDLES AT THE SAME TIME!!! There was no "show" while he was cooking. He just cooked our food (for our party AND the party in front of us) as fast as he could and left to another griddle. FOURTH (and final) ISSUE: We had a party of 4 adults and a one-year old toddler. The toddler was eating out of Mom and Dads plate. Everything was fine (this time) until we received the check. We were charged an extra drink AND we were charged an 150% gratuity for having a party of 5! Yes, you read right...150%!!! (See picture) They counted the toddler as an adult. Of course, we brought all of this up to our server and she changed it to 15% gratuity BUT didn't care that one in our party was a toddler. The manager was directly behind us and could hear that I was having an issue with our check and didn't bother to come assess the situation, let alone fix the problem. If this is your first time trying Japanese food, you'll probably like it. If you have eaten Japanese food before, or maybe if you're a sushi aficionado, or maybe you want to bring your significant other on a romantic date, steer VERY clear from this establishment. If you're a California native like me, you know good Japanese cuisine when you taste it. Unfortunately, Yakima is pretty far away from the ocean and there's only a handful of places that do sushi around here as a result. Kyoto is the second-worst place to get sushi in Yakima, the first being any gas station that sells it. The rolls taste edible, but an important part of sushi is how it is put together and visual appeal to a lesser degree. This is important because good-looking sushi usually means that attention to detail has been taken in other departments. Kyoto's sushi usually differs in taste, looks, and EVEN THE AMOUNT depending on different days and time of day. Nothing is more disappointing than getting $7 worth of some food that cost you $12, especially if it falls apart as soon as your chopsticks touch it. I'm usually one not to complain about service, but I'll tell you that the waiting staff are very impatient and that's something which will get your order screwed up. The atmosphere is really bad at pretending to be fancy. It's also very loud, and depending on how close you are to all the noise in the Hibachi grill area, conversation can get difficult. Don't get me wrong, take-out from Kyoto is a good alternative to fast food on your lunch break. It's ready very fast and it's reasonably priced. But the quality is still pretty bad. If you're planning to sit down and enjoy a nice Japanese meal at Kyoto, just don't. read more

He assured me that it wasn't but he did say "we have really good hamachi on Saturdays." I should've read that as "our hamachi isn't very good on Mondays" but I was too hungry and already ordered it. Ugliest presentation I have ever seen....even in a to-go container. Super wilted, near dead kale, ruddy green wasabi, and a pile of cucumber that looked like it was cut with a plastic fork. No artistic touches to speak of. Kicking myself for not taking a photo.... Here comes the real upset: Hamachi - looked old, blood line was really dark and not a bright red, flesh was unattractive. It's wasn't smelly but it was fishy and mushy on the palate. - TOSSED IT White tuna - Firm, no bad smell but what the...ice crystals inside. It was literally crunchy! I didn't want to toss it so I put it in it's own container in the fridge. I came back about 3 hours later after running errands. The fish was sitting in a huge puddle of water. It was so unappetizing. I should have left it on top of the kale to water it. Ha ha! IT WA FROZEN so either the young man lied or they froze it themselves after not selling through it quick enough. I have never been served HALF FROZEN sushi before. It was just NASTY!!!!! Don't come here for sushi!!!! FYI: Kyoto is a chain owned by the Benihana corporation. There are at least 2 others in our state. If you like that "Benihana Experience" ie cooking your food table side with lots of flames and stuff....you may enjoy this place but I'd be concerned about the quality..... read more

Chef cooks the meal in front of you which is awesome. My low rating is rated on my waitresses lack of performance in her basic job duties. The waitress doesn't even have to bring food to the table so she should have had no reason to take 20 minutes on my first drink, when she delivered my initial drink order after an excessive amount of time(almost walked to the bar myself), I asked her to immediately put another drink order in as this one obviously took awhile for her to get out and I'd likely be done by the time she arrived with the second. Instead, she took another 20-30 minutes to deliver my second drink where others who weren't even in my party were telling her "that guy ordered a drink from you and has been waiting". We were in Washington for 7 months while my honey worked on their local jail.. We had the opportunity to try a few different places for sushi.. Kyoto hands down was absolutely the best!! We ate here 3 times and each time the food was so FRESH.. The sushi chef made things for us to try without adding it to our bill.. Their crab salad makes you wanna slap someone else's mommy, lol.. Yeah it's that darn good.. Their sushi boat it totally the best thing on the menu and more then enough for 3 or 4 to share.. Can't say enough good thing's about this place.. I was desperate for dinner before flying out of town and could walk here from the airport. I had the mixed steak and shrimp grill and it was edible. But that's it. Nothing remarkable and expensive for what was very simple food. I stayed away from the sushi items. Didn't seem like the kind of place where sushi would be worth trying. I didn't mind waiting half an hour to be spoken to for the first time but the waitress, upon taking drink orders, asked my friend if she was sure she didn't want a diet drink instead. I have been here multiple times since they have opened. For my birthday this year I chose to take my family and friends here for dinner because their steak and lobster sounded really good. Unfortunately my dinner was under cooked, lobster still a little frozen in the middle and my steak cold in the middle. Didn't help that when I politely went to talk to management about it because our server who just started working there couldn't figure out how to discount our meal ended up charging my wife's credit card three times, the manager was rude and down right disrespectful to my wife and I and tried to put the blame on me for my undercooked meal. We watched 2 other tables have their food cooked, serve, and leave. They probably need to have a full hibachi table in order to make the service make sense for their chefs, but we were offered no explanation and when we got up to walk out nobody offered much of an apology. Word of advice: tell your customers why they're waiting in a not busy restaurant for service.. when we left our table had just filled up and thus I'm sure the chef was getting ready. Went there on Valentine's Day. Made reservations a week prior for 7pm. We got there and were left standing in the lobby for 50 minutes until we were finally seated. The hostess told me "10 more minutes" at least 3 times. When we were seated, there was no waitress to get us our drinks, let alone our food order. I had to go to the bar to get my own drinks. Some people ordered sushi from the sushi bar to tide their hunger over. The waitress finally came around at 905pm to get our orders. The chef was entertaining, but nothing spectacular. The food was decent, but not for the price we paid. Was not offered any compensation for the extreme inconvenience we endured. Absolutely the worst management I have ever experienced in 20+ years of dining.
