It's been a long time since I've used a tanning salon and I've had my eye on this one for quite some time due to its location to me. Some of the big events, televised or otherwise begin early here in Chicago. Unfortunately the sun and warmer weather does not, so I needed to get a head start this spring. I signed up in early April and my membership went thru mid mind July. The price was reasonable and the results were above expectations. They have different levels and different beds depending on what you're looking for. The location is very convenient via CTA or biking. Parking is not. The intersection is a pain in the arse. The salon s very clean and maintained well. Above all the customer service is top notch. All of the attendants are polite and very helpful and even funny at times. My need for their service now in the middle of summer has declined. But as long as I reside on Chicago's northside, I will sign up when again when needed. read more

Just moved to the area, and the facilities and customer service are great! I have to give a GLOWING review for the service and patience of Emma, who went above and beyond for me. While changing for my tan I knocked my wedding ring off of the little shelf, heard it hit the ground...then it was nowhere to be seen. Emma helped me search every corner, nook, and cranny of the facility (and there are a lot, tanning rooms are separated by partitions that don't touch the floor, and each piece of tanning equipment is monstrous with a ton of parts/cords near the floor). After about 25 minutes of searching, I was sitting in defeat on the floor about to give up and she found it! 3 rooms down from mine UNDERNEATH a pillar joint that connects the walls to the floor. There are some good people working at this location, however, the overall management is very poor. I had a membership for a very long time, and they initially entered my credit card information wrong so I kept getting charged the late fee and then would pay. When this issue was resolved, they did not offer me a refund but merely $30 in store credit, which was not nearly the equivalent. When you're trying to cancel the membership, they are going to insist that you come in to do so, which isn't necessary and can be done over the phone, this is also your cancellation is inconvenient, and is less likely to happen. read more

Because of COVID, I stayed away from a tanning booth. But now, I thought it might be ok to go back. The day, I was told that my pre-paid visits expire after a year. Hmm... And, the front desk person who informed me of this was, well...not quite there. Seemed stoned, hungover, or just plain bored? Not cool. I'm my mind, they've stolen money from me. If the company will honor my pre-paid visits and either refund my money or allow more sessions. I'm not holding my breath. Buyer beware. read more

I am a "bed one/Cadillac" kinda dude. So, I go for the bougie upgrade always. I have been coming to L.A. Tan for year. I loved it when Karen worked the front desk. She was great and always a comic. I miss her but know she has moved on to new things. The Bed 1 tan is premium. The tan last longer and also seems to give you a more rich color than the other beds and machines. I recommend it plus, it is more comfortable AND has air conditioning in the bed. Imagine that! I have put a hold on my account but I still get to tan for free one day a month because of the hold. I also can go on Tuesdays and tan for $9 in my Cadillac bed. The lotions there are expensive which is not unusual for these types of places. HUGE HELPFUL HINT: Find a lotion you like and then go to amazon and purchase it. You will save about 50 bucks for the same thing. Other than that, I like the place. It is clean and my bed is always working. I might have to wait sometimes to get in it but they are quick to turn the beds over. read more

It's been a along time getting a spray tan but decided to try again since I was going on vacation and I'm super pale. The staff was friendly and very helpful. The woman at the desk (sorry, didn't catch her name) helped me choose which shade and showed me the correct way to be in the booth and following the prompts. It was super easy and quick. I had an issue that my back didn't get sprayed. I returned the next day and the same woman was there. She apologized and I was able to respray my back. It looked nice and natural. read more

I just got home from getting a spray tan from this LA Tan location, and this by far has been my worst experience at an LA Tan. I walked into the location and was not greeted with a hello, but rather with a "what's your name?" I proceeded to let the older, middle aged man that I had never been at that location, but he could of cared less. Instead he asked me again, "what's your name?" I answered. He asked me which bed I wanted to do, and I told him I wanted to spray tan, and had received a promotional email. Which he proceeded to ask which level tan. One, two, three, or four? That's it! I answered with level four. He responded with "go to room 7" and that was the extent of our interaction. I understand that I was there for a free spray tan, but that email was just a push for me to get more information about what LA Tan has to offer. Which is what the purpose of marketing email are supposed to do! Not only did this person miss that mark, but he lost a customer, and is now getting blasted with bad reviews. I recently moved to the Edgewater neighborhood from Naperville, and have slowly been replacing my usual spots with new ones, but needless to say, LA Tan will not be getting my business. I am disappointed with this experience, and definitely expected more from a brand like LA Tan. read more

After moving to Rogers Park 6 months ago, I've been in desperate search for a tanning salon in the area. I've tried various salons, and I would say this is the best one I've been to yet. Pros; the prices. They have wonderful coupons for your first visit, so make sure you utilize them! I was able to get a free tan, and get 50% off the first 100 points..so that's about 10 tans for $40.. Trust me; you can't beat this pricing! ( I just went to another salon & I paid $20 for ONE tan). This facility is very clean, and the bed ( I think it was a level 2) was able to get me dark after only 8 minutes! Also, they sell eyewear for only $4 (a lot of tanning salons I've been to, actually don't give you that option). Cons; the location. I'm new to the area, so I'm maybe it's the construction, but the parking is a pain in the ass! It's street parking, so you have to pay a few bucks to park. Second, the man who helped me was knowledgable enough, and friendly, but he did not show me back to the tanning bed. Being a first time customer, I would expect him to give me a little tour. All in all, this tanning salon is good and I would recommend this salon if you like a clean place, good pricing, and beds that actually work! read more

I've been going to LA Tan for the past 6+ years. I used to go more frequently when they were located on Broadway before moving a few blocks over to Bryn Mawr. I go to the new location every 2 months or so and the staff has always been friendly and helpful. This evening, I got there at 8:38, this girl that works there (presumably new since I've never seen her before), walks up from the back and says "Oh, no, sweetie. We're done for today" in a condescending voice. I asked her what she meant, she says the last tan is at 8:30. I asked why does it say they're open until 9 and she says there's a sign on the door that says the last tan is at 8:30 even though on the door is specifically says they're open until 9 pm and on their website it has the same hours. If you're going to stop letting people in at 8:30 than update your hours instead of having people walk/drive to the location and be refused service given the incorrect hours. The girl that was working tonight didn't even bother apologizing and was being snarky like it's my fault that they close half an hour before they're suppose to. Walking 6 blocks in the freezing cold weather to be turned away for their incorrect hours is no fun. I used to work retail; if it says we're open until a certain time, we were required to let customers in until that specific time instead of turning them away half an hour before closing. Here's a suggestion, LA TAN, if your workers require half an hour to clean up prior to closing than change your hours to 8:30 instead of misleading people to believe that you're open until 9. read more

Otherwise known as anemic, ashen, blanched, bloodless, cadaverous, colorless, dim, dull, faded, faint, feeble, ghastly, gray, haggard, inadequate, ineffective, ineffectual, insubstantial, livid, lurid, pallid, pasty, poor, sallow, sick, sickly, spectral, thin (haha, ok not this one!), unsubstantial, wan, washed-out, waxen, weak, white, ashy, bleached, deathlike, doughy, waxlike, whitish. I needed some color. Ok? Judge me! I am freckly and I like it! The pros: -Right off the Bryn Mawr Red Line, or Broadway bus. -Easy street parking. -Clean. CLEAN. CLEAN. -Friendly staff. -Great coupons for first-timers: http://www.gettanchicago.com/coupons.html -Right next to Flourish Bakery. (tan + cupcake?) The cons: -Well, the "testimonial" posters from people dressed as medical professionals promising tanning is in your best interest. I mean, Ok...I get it, but it's NOT safe. Tanning is NOT good for you. It'd be like a doctor on a poster claiming "I always have a good smoke at the end of the day to keep my carbon levels up." Funny, though :) The moral: Tan at your own risk, my pale person friends. The packages are confusing (though most of these places are), but once I figured it out, its a good deal. I started out with the 100 point package (1/2 off with coupon) and only go in for about 8 minutes. If you buy an unlimited package, then you are privy to daily doses of Vitamin D (I could do one of those posters!) but pay for upgrades. The bonus? If you go before noon (they open at 9am) you get FREE upgrades. So if you can swing pre-noon tanning, buy the lowest package and take advantage. I've gone a few times, and I will continue to do so until being tan is not the average look (ie; fall/winter). For now, it is giving me my needed dose of Vitamin D and keeping me from looking like I could star in the Twilight series. (oh hell yeah, I just dropped that I actually READ those books). LA Tan is going to kill me for this...but A Better Tan, WAS a better tan. The salon is much nicer inside. The front desk attendant was knowledgeable and a great listener. LA Tan tends to hire young high school or college girls that are cute (and that's fine). But if I ask a question they need to find a manager or make a call to answer me. Not only that, but there have been plenty of times I've gone into a bed that hadn't been cleaned and when I tell the desk person they go in there and do this uber quickie wipe down in front of me and say "ok. ready!" with a cheerful smile. Um, yeah, I know I sweat like a pig in one of those things and I wonder if that quickie got all the last person's sweat and dirt off???? Anyhow, back to A Better Tan....I came in with a gift card for $10. The front desk man was totally cool about it. I hadn't tanned in months and was quite pale by now, so I asked if I could go for only 5 minutes. He was totally accommodating but he left the remainder of credit on my account so I could use the full gift card. A lot of places would have taken my card and been like, use it for whatever you want but "no partials". The salon itself is beautiful and rooms are a little bigger. The beds are also excellent. Their level two looked like the level 3 at LAT. I also noticed the towels they leave for you aren't all beat up looking, but clean and newer looking. I realized after I got undressed my coffee was at the counter. I wasn't going to get totally redressed. So I popped my head out and and said "excuse me sir? Did I leave my coffee up there?" He said yes and that he put it aside for me. Very polite. The bed, despite being a low level 2 bed was in excellent condition and in 5 minutes I was dying to get out. They must have new bulbs. When I checked myself out I actually had color and not just red (like I feared because it's been a while). I'll be back to a Better Tan to finish off that gift card and next time, I think I'll even sign up for a package :) read more

Holy nine minutes in a level two Batman! So...I have about 3,000 tanning points at XSport and what do I do? I buy tanning points here. Why? Because here I know I won't have to worry about flagging someone down to check me into a bed, opaque/cracked acrylic, or busted bulbs. Knowing I gave new meaning to the phrase "butt white," I decided I better build a little base before my Florida vacay. I did one session at XSport on their second highest best for ten minutes, just for the hell of it. Then I came here and got more color on their level two bed in eight. After one more session here, I had enough base to allow me to walk around Florida theme park heaven/hell for two days from opening til close, without a burn. I'd say mission accomplished. Oh, and their staff is awesome. I walked in with a groupon for ten sessions and they still let me get the new customer offers for a free first tan and half off 100 points. I was also told to use the points when tanning 9 minutes or less on the level two, and the groupon sessions when tanning for ten minutes or longer, so I could get more bang for my buck. Staff is very knowledgeable and pleasant. I definitely don't feel like someone is trying to spy on me while I am in the bed. Its a great place and very reasonably priced. This is the best LA Tan location in the city. I cancelled my membership at another location and that location never actually cancelled it. I was getting charged and the only way to stop it was to cancel my card. When I wanted to restart my spray tan membership I went to this location and they were amazing helping my figure it all out. They restarted my membership and were able to wave the charges the other location had my account. They were always so friendly and helpful. I am sure it was annoying to deal with another location's mess up but they never showed it if it was. The place is very clean and always has great service. I always get a great tan and get in and out very quickly. If you are going to go to any LA Tan, I suggest this one. They are the best in every way. read more

Interior is very inviting with a fantastic staff that is always welcoming and quick to help. My first visit, the staff was very helpful in helping me establish a plan for tanning for 2 months in preparation for a vacation. His recommendations were right on; I wanted to tan for a longer period of time but he was right on with how long I should be in the machine. This review is long overdue, we have been meaning to write it since the first day we walked through their doors. We had just moved to Edgewater and had been in search of a place to catch some color. Winter was shortly on its way and we had to find a place before the grey skies set in for several months. After reading the reviews and checking out their website we decided to cancel our membership at our other tanning salon and give them a try. We were greeted by James who walked us through their tanning packages and gave us his recommendations of lotions. We have been tanning for years....yes, we know...but anyways....for the first time ever we didn't feel like we were being sold a used car, no pressure at all. In fact, just the opposite, he encouraged us to try it out then go home and think about which package we wanted to do and sign up when we came back. We tanned and went on our way. We weren't able to make it back in for several days after but when we walked through the door James greeted us by name, IMPRESSIVE! We signed up, bought our lotions and have been hooked ever since! James, Allen and the rest of the crew are what make this place so great! It also helps that the place is always immaculate, the beds are great and we now look like were are from Miami! read more

II'm not a regular tanner, I tan with a purpose (i.e. for a vacation, upcoming wedding, or just so I can wear white shorts). Because of that, I would usually hit up the local tanning conglomerate such as LA Tan or Palm Beach for the latest short-term deal. Of course I never felt bad about this, because...well in short, those places suck. I found A Better Tan on yelp after searching for a new tanning salon with deals in the neighborhood, and the 4.5 star rating shocked me. A tanning salon with 4.5 stars? And when I checked out their website I found some awesome new member coupons--I was sold. But what really surprised me most about this place is the level of customer service. You won't see some teenager looking to tan for free and talk to her boyfriend behind the counter. You find friendly associates who actually care about your business and the quality of your tan. I told them my purpose, and they didn't try to up sell me on a monthly membership. Nor did they try to push their most expensive lotion on me. In fact, they offered me two free sample packets, until I found my "lotion match". These guys are laidback, and truly value customer service. I'm so excited to find a regular tanning spot! After being spoiled at A Better Tan, I just don't think I can tan anywhere else. I love these guys! read more

It's a little odd for me to give a Tanning Salon a 5 star rating but honestly, I couldn't come up with any reason not to. The place is clean, well maintained and they offer a lot of different packages for tanning. All that is great, but what it really comes down to are the beds - they really work! I've never been able to get a really good tan from a tanning salon - might be me, my skin type - whatever. But this place is different and the results are great. The manager is a really nice person and very helpful, funny, pleasant and easy going. Everyone else that works there is pleasant as well and they do their job well. They have a good "store" for products and always have stuff on sale up to 50% off. Also, if you buy lotion there you get the option to keep a "bag" behind the counter with your lotion, eyewear, etc. so it's always there and you don't get caught in the "I think I'll stop off and tan - oh wait, I don't have my stuff with me. Damn it!" situation. It's steps off the Bryn Mar L which makes it super convenient and the hours are good. Never a wait but remember that the last tanning session is 30min before they close. So even if you only tan for 10min you can't show up 10min before they close :) read more

This LA tan location must be getting ready to close down for good because it's a mess and it's been a mess. It's one thing but the hooks are broken off in all the tanning rooms so you have to put your clothes on the floor and now they've taken the trash cans out of each room as well. It is their responsibility to make sure the bulbs are in good working order because it's a health risk. The employee did not tell me the face tanning did not work and I got seriously sunburned over the rest of my body. That was two weeks ago I went back today and it has not been repaired! Yes we've seen the same artwork and dirt in the lobby for over 10 years, but now owns this franchise location is burning us, and that hurts. read more

I'd never been tanning before, but I was working full time this summer and I was tired of being pale. After one of my friends did a month of unlimited tanning at A Better Tan and couldn't stop raving about it, I decided to give it a shot. I came in there not knowing what to expect, but the gentleman at the front desk was super helpful! I came back the next day and signed up for a month! I was surprised by how much I loved it, and how convenient it was. It is always clean, and the staff is superb. I had a problem where they accidentally charged my credit card because of a misunderstanding of the package that I had signed up for, and the manager was super helpful and resolved the issue almost immediately. Being new to the world of tanning, I really appreciated his help and desire to make sure that I had a positive experience. Although I was out of Chicago for most of August, I am back now and I can't wait to go back and set up another unlimited monthly plan! I've been tanning here since April 2011 and absolutely love it. For a place in Chicago, it's not unreasonably priced. I started off for 4 months with the unlimited tanning since it was summer and I wanted to be pretty dark. Now I've moved to the points system for the winter since I'm only going once a week. The facilities are clean, staff is kind and knows who I am, and the tanning beds are up-to-date! The hours are pretty good...I would definitely recommend! read more

Unfortunately I had a bad experience at this place. The poor girl running the front desk was super overwhelmed with the few customers in the place at the time, and instead of solving one issue at a time, kept going from one issue to the next without actually resolving anything. She was not well trained on any of the systems. It's a shame that she was alone too and couldn't ask for any help. When you go in for a tan you expect the whole experience to last no more than 15-20 minutes tops...it lasted me almost a full hour just waiting around for her to try and deal with the issues and get my room setup. read more

A Better Tan Tanning salon is so much better than LA Tan and especially TanCun!! As a student, I don't want to pay a ton a month for something that I really only use one or twice every few weeks, but at A Better Tan, $19.99 a month for level 1 or 2 (before noon) is an AMAZING deal! I have never seen more friendly staff that work there, and everyone always is excited to see me, and most employees even know my name! My friends and I went here and I got a sun tan, which I had a fine experience with, but I am rating 1 star for both of my friends' experiences here. They both got spray tans, and generally when you get a spray tan there is immediately color added to your skin tone. For both, there was nothing. They asked before we left about it and the man at the register snapped at them saying it would develop over 5-6 hours and that it was a clear solution. 5-6 hours came and went, with no color whatsoever. You can cleatell because my friends are extremely pale. So a day or so later, my friend called to see what could be done about it, and the lady on the phone said they don't usually reimburse for this and that they'd "maybe give her a call" if they changed their minds. Even corporate has yet to respond to them. Yikes on the service there, would not recommend besides just basic sun tanning!! -- update: Woody from LA Tan called my friend back, apologized for everything and said the machine wasn't working right! So they are giving a free spray for when she comes back in!!! Very nice. Changed from 1 star to 4. read more

All the years I have been coming here my experiences were good. I moved from the area so I haven't been in for few months. But I will be coming back soon. I just love the blond guy working there. His name is Woody. He is always helpful and knows his stuff. The beds are always clean. They have a good selection of different tanning beds and spray tan booths. They got plenty of lotions, but little pricey. I think on Tuesdays they have some specials, so it gets crazy busy. Would definitely recommend. read more

RUN AWAY- BEFORE HE CHASES YOU OUT! I just had the most insane experience of my life. I am a nice person. I am a friendly person. I just happen to dislike junk mail- it's a waste of paper and it annoys me to throw away piles of coupons and ads I won't use. Whenever someone asks for my address my first question is "Is it really necessary?" and then I explain I would prefer not to receive any mailings. Simple right? This is what happened when I walked into A Better Tan. me: "hi, how much would it be for 15 or 20 minutes? I haven't gone tanning in years, and I'm here for just this one time." way too orange dude: "well it varies..." I narrow it down to 15 minutes at level X, but he still doesn't give me a price. okay, moving on. I start filling out a form and hand him my drivers license. him: "is this your current address?" me: "no, but can I not give it to you? I don't like to get mail." he glares... "If you really need one then you can put that old address down." I am laughing and smiling this whole time. him, suddenly furious: "FINE! GET OUT!" me: "....what?" him, ripping the form out of my hand: "you come in here all cheap, and then give me an attitude about your address? no, get out!" me: "I'm sorry, i think you misunderstood me... I just don't want to get any mail. I'll give you my address, I just-" him: "You misunderstood me, GET OUT!" In his defense he was holding my drivers license and I was paying up-front, both sure signs that I was trying to scam him. so....... apart from the fact that their employee looked like a walking melanoma, refused to tell me the cost of the service i was attempting to purchase, and was completely unbalanced........ seems like a nice place. read more

Ok, so I like to tan. Sue me. If I want to look like a burnt hot dog when I'm 40, it's my perogative. No one will say, however, that I didn't do it in style. A Better Tan is just that...Better. Viva la spray tan! Mondays are half price, and I love the people who work here. I have a terrible fear of actual tanning, and my only spray tan experience before this was awful (see Kim W.--young ditzy girls lead to bad, orange spray-tan streaks). James helped with my first spray tan experience. I was not orange or streaky. Instead, I had a beautiful glow and looked perfectly natural for a wedding I was going to that night. Thanks, James! I was an Ultimate Exposure member for many years, but moved to this area and needed a new tanning place. I have NO idea why I was hesitant at first (probably because I didn't understand the offer to whiten my teeth AND tan) because when the moment I entered, I was treated like family, given a great discount on points, given another discount on lotion and even free sample lotions. I HEART all the guys at the front desk just because they are so friendly and helpful and really treat you like a person and not like a paying codfish. I have never had a problem getting a bed and the guys are helpful choosing beds depending on what your current tanning need/desire is. I absolutely adore this tanning salon and will NEVER return to Ultimate Exposure. The guys put a smile on my face as I enter and leave. read more

I've said it once, but I feel that I need to say it again. This place is awesome!!! Very clean atmosphere. With an awesome and attentive staff (hi Michael, David, and James)! Half off spray tan on MONDAYS. There is usually ample street parking on Bryn Mawr to get your tan on and get out of there fast. The best place I have tanned, where I feel like an important customer, where they remember your name, and want you to look and feel your best (even when you are under indigo lights that are technically not good for you - whatever)! Reading the other reviews here, I feel like everyone who tans here is not really the type of person who tans. Or at least they don't think they are. That said, I am also not the type of person who tans, but I think it is really a testament to A Better Tan that so many people who usually don't frequent tanning salons go here. I'd say one of the biggest reasons I go back is because of the service. The people who work here are just so friendly and helpful. They sold me a package of 10 sessions for a really extremely affordable price and I tend to go once a week now, just to get a bit of color. Highly recommended! read more
