I think we had on an off day experience here. My brother and sis in law had been here 3 times before on previous trips and agree that this time the selection was not as good (at least to our well traveled Asian American tastes- I completely understand that maybe this menu is divine to others). It was a long day, and we were a little late to our reservation. It was cold and dreary outside, and I was longing for something homey, warm, comforting after walking 12 miles earlier in the day. This is just not the place for that. It's fine dining modern French- with many great culinary skills to showcase. We did the three course menu with starter (entree), main course (plat), and a dessert (50 euro-ish?). I opted for the vegetarian plat since we had been eating a ton of meat earlier that day. Everyone's dishes were beautiful to look at, and the ingredients were quality. I just did not taste anything that was noteworthy on this visit when samping from all my family. tl;dr: inventive, delicious, relaxed, low priced I came here with a group of friends on recommendation from another friend. he told me to order the tasting menu but we decided to each order the prix fixe and split everything. it was a great decision - we ended up tasting more than the tasting menu offered and we spent less. we made our reservation a few weeks ahead with no trouble whatsoever. when we arrived, our table was ready. we explained to our server that one in our party wasn't going to order food but was going to share in our desserts - they were perfectly accomodating and gave us no issues with this. before our first course, we were offered an "amuse-buche" - a small bowl of "potato skin foam." it was light, refreshing, and delicious. they magically managed to perfectly deliver the essence of the potato skin, something i wouldn't shudder throwing out. as for the meal - we basically ordered the entire menu. everything was delicious, plated beautifully, and creative. the desserts (pine nut souffle, chartreuse baba) were also delicious. i was amazed they managed to get a souffle to rise with pine nuts inside the batter. the baba was slightly too alcoholic, but perhaps that's the point. the member of our party who didn't want dinner supplemented the desserts with a cheese plate. knowing this, the thoughtful staff gave him an extra-large portion of cheese. he was appreciative and we were too. oh and the cheese was fantastic. read more

This was by far the most sublime meal I had in Paris. We chose a 6 course tasting meal for 52 euros each and we were so glad we chose the chef's choices as they kept getting better and better. Now we are American so I was unsure of the exact wording of the dishes but the highlights included carrot soup with a broccoli mouse ( I think), pickled vegetables, fish that had an amazing nut crust, lamb and mashed potatoes, and a fennel ice cream with sour apples and rhubarb. Just came back from dinner and HAD to write a review ASAP otherwise I would forget to! Been in Paris for two days and had 4 meals so far and this was by far THE BEST meal my hubby and I have had thus far. (We even toyed with the notion that this might have been the best meal we have had in Europe so far as we were in Rome and Venice prior to Paris). We had their 5-6 course tasting menu. SO AMAZING!! And the service was excellent! Everything on the menu is in French and the staff speaks some English but I recommend just diving in blind and go with their tasting menu as it will truly be memorable. ( All they will ask is if you're allergic to anything and will not tell you anything else about the dishes until they arrive individually) They do accept Amex, for those travelers who love their Amex as much as my hubby does - since most places in Europe don't accept Amex this is a bonus for this place. You must get a reservation, because the restaurant is very very small and the seating very is tight. The inside of the restaurant is about the size of an average living room. So please call ahead. A true European cafe experience. Everything I wanted from a dinner in France, and then some. It is a small dining room, the seating is as tight as it gets, and although we were one of the first to arrive, the place completely filled up. The night we were there, it was a Pre Fix menu for 33 euro per person 3 course dinner. Our host who met us at the door, also did the translating of the menu, and took our order. The couple at the table next to my wife and I, made conversation with us, and were very pleasant. They even gave us a restaurant recommendation for the following evening. The duck con-fee starter was the most wonderful thing I have EVER eaten. The veal tail with mushrooms was amazingly tender, and the polenta croquette were reminiscent of the Cuban starter I love. I opted for the white chocolate ice cream with French toast sticks with fruit puree, although I think I enjoyed my wifes Poached pear just a touch more. What everyone says is true-- L'Epi Dupin has it all: food, service, drinks, atmosphere, and price. Considering this place is all about intimate farm-to-table "bistronomic" (in their words) dining, for the menu carte (app + entree + dessert) at 34 euro? THIS PLACE IS A STEAL. I was supposed to go to another fairly well-known restaurant before realizing I didn't match the dress code, nor did i have anything that would have suited it. In any case, I ended up calling L'Epi Dupin through the recommendations of Yelp, and they had space for me. I got here at 10 PM, and realized WHY they hardly had space- the restaurant is tiny. It's located off a tiny side street, with amazing food and service. I suppose they also get a lot of English visitors because even though the menu is scrawled in French on boards along the wall-- my waiter translated the entire menu for me in English. THAT'S impressive. The menus are scrawled on boards that are against the wall, and there's a menu wherever you look. It's a 3 course meal (though you can get the degustation) including appetizer + entree + dessert. For tourists, this may be off the beaten path-- but believe me, you'll want to come here for a dinner you'll never forget. The service is impeccable, they will translate everything for you, the chef is amazing. I got the canard pastilla (delicious and light, flaky, just all around amazing!), the spinach and veal (I would have gotten the duck leg, but I already got canard pastilla, though this was amazingly tender and delicious), and for dessert, the rhubarb cookie, with an entire rhubarb on top! My girlfriend's boss comes to Paris annually, and highly recommended we come to L'Epi Dupin, which was just around the corner from our hotel. It was our first meal in Paris, and it was fantastic. Our server was quirky in a way that made the meal an experience. His English was great and we had no problems having the menu explained to us as it's all written on a chalkboard in French. The food was modern and clever without being full of itsself, and it was almost all delicious. We had an unbelievable duck tenderloin in sweet and sour sauce, my first experience with that cut of duck. I got to try sea snails for the first time, which was fun even if the dish didn't change my world. But I did love the bright and citrus-y dorade with orange risotto. It tasted like summer. A delightful, cozy little place with fresh and fascinating flavors with a friendly English-speaking staff... you can't ask for a lot more than that as an American in Paris. One warning: I do not recommend the "rum cake." We had six people and there were six desserts on the menu, so we ordered them all. Most were quite good if you are into French desserts (I am not), but the rum cake... it's literally a bowl of spiced rum with a popover in it. You are literally served a bowl of rum, a piece of bread that sucks a tiny bit of it up, and a spoon. I cut a piece of the popover and, thinking it was a sauce, a big spoonful of rum. This was our favorite meal in Paris, which came highly recommended by the guy we rented our Paris apartment from. It's three courses for something like 34 euro, which by Paris standards, is a deal. When you take into account the quality of the food at L'Epi Dupin, it's a steal. I'm a hapless American whose French is non-existent. That said, I do my best to avoid restaurants in Paris where the chalkboards are written in anything resembling English. Perhaps that's some sort of personal, knee-jerk authenticity problem that I should consult a therapist for, but that's just the universe of inane pretension I operate in. At the very least, I did find that this non-english menu method helped me avoid the overwhelming amount of overpriced tourist traps in Paris. While the menu is presented in an illegible French scrawl, the restaurant predominantly caters to non-local, non-French speakers. So despite the neighborhood vibe and the nicely designed, intimate interior, the clientele consisted of foodie-oriented foreigners. A friendly older couple sat next to us and told us that they have a house in the southwest French countryside and that they have been going back to L'Epi Dupin since its opening every time they are within a 100 km radius. Hardcore. The servers might as well be linguists--we heard one waiter speak French, Italian, English and Japanese in the course of our meal. The chef himself also makes a point of popping out from the kitchen to mingle with the diners. We went there for dinner on a weeknight and managed (luckily) to get in without a reservation, but reservations are definitely recommended, if not required on even busier nights. I had the squid for an entrée (highly recommended), the leg of duck for my plate and some chocolate thing for dessert--the wine and Ricard were taking their toll by the time the chocolate rolled out. The duck leg was probably one of the tastiest things I've ever shoved into my face. I know, it's incredibly hard to get bad duck in Paris, and it's not exactly the most adventurous thing on the menu, but this duck made all other duck seem like 2-D cardboard representations of the real thing. The savory leg came doused in a brown, roux-like sauce and covered with mushrooms (I forget the kind of mushrooms, they were small and thin, possibly enoki?). The skin of the duck leg was crisp, and the meat shredded off the bone with even the suggestion of a touch of a fork. This meal is last-meal-on-death-row status. My girlfriend was not as excited about her main plate. She got the veal confit, which came in the form of a quarter inch thick circle, resembling a stack of salami in shape, with crispy cereal like morsels resting on top of it. Tasty for sure, but just a little too strange for comfort. She was jealous about my duck situation across the table. Anyway, if you're in Paris for a few days and want some great dining that's friendly, unpretentious, adventurous and delicious, go here. read more

I don't see how people could not love this restaurant. Loic, the guy who takes reservations and runs the reservations, has been there since I lived in Paris. He remembered my voice and gave me a table even though they were full. And it still knocks the socks off a lot of the cuisines that I've had across the world. The menu is a 3 course, 33 euro delight, with an emphasis on fresh products and honest cooking. There is nothing incredibly innovative, but that to me is more of a plus. You won't find new spices, flavors, or things that you haven't seen before. You will however eat some of the best duck you've had here, and the fish is delicious and fresh. The fruit heavy desserts are always a delight and the ice cream is inventive. All in all it's an underrated gem in the 6th arr. If you're looking for a slightly off the beaten path variation on a traditional date, go check out a movie at La Pagode then come here enjoy a fine meal. You will not be disappointed. read more

Ah-mazing. You know how you go through a mental list in your head and say, "oh THAT was a great place", or "that was the best meal I've ever had"? OK maybe it's just me - but THIS Is the best meal I've ever had (and I've been here twice - once in 2011 and once in 2013. Though I'm not a local, not anywhere close, I highly recommend stopping here (make a reservation - two seatings at 7:00 p.m. and at 9:30) if you're visiting Paris. The chef is truly amazing, the food is incredible, and the prices are spot-on with the quality of what you're getting. The prix fixe menu (entree, plat + dessert) is just perfect, with options to suit every taste. And yes, they will translate it into English for you. L'Epi Dupin was our first dinner in Paris and boy it was a great place to start. It had been reccomended to me from a frequent Paris traveler so I had high hopes which were met and surpassed! First off, it's a tiny tiny adorable place with no menus. The menu changes often so everything is written on a chalk board for the night and thankfully our waiter helped us with some translation. Some of the highlights included foie gras stuffed chicken which was served cold. It was like nothing I have tried before. It was light and tasty. Many of us indulged in the duck tenderloin which was out of this world. I always have the breast or leg so the tenderloin was a totally new experience. It was fantastic and served in a sweet and sour sauce over veggies. The meat was delicious. It had all the familiar tastes but was much less fatty. The last highlight for me was the dorade with an orange risotto. The fish was cooked perfectly and the risotto had just the right amount of sweetness from the orange flavors. To add to the evening, we discovered at the end of the night that the table next to us was the chefs parents. We proceeded to try and have a conversation with them which was tough but we certainly let them know their son was a great chef. A beautiful little restaurant with attentive service and creative food that is well priced and good value. We sat outside which was wonderful - there were heaters but even blankets were offered to ensure that we were comfortable. The staff were so friendly and offered to help us understand the menu in English. So nice! We ordered the three course degustation and were delighted when extra little courses were offered as well as the main dishes. We had a complimentary amuse bouche of a carrot foam and a lovely madeline. Stand out dishes were the veal and the melt in mouth beef. They also heard us mention that it was my partner's birthday and ended up surprising us with a candle on her dessert and a sung happy birthday! The place has an excellent vibe, it is small, surprisingly quiet for the close feel, and if you can find an excuse to pause outside the bathroom, the kitchen is totally fun to watch: The head chef, François Pasteau, has this great way of scrutinizing each plate as it comes out of the kitchen. The menu rotates and is completely dialed into the seasons. November is full of strong flavors - winter veggies within, around, and combine with everything from oysters to lam, dear, duck and fish. For a restaurant that began in 1995, this restaurant continues to be running on all cylinders. Hosted by the ever charming François Pasteau, we had not been to the Epi Dupin for over year and were pleasantly surprised to find a new look, with warm-coloured metallic tables, a high top long table and a wine rack embedded in the bare brick wall. If the fine spring air added to the ambiance, the food was an absolute delight, showing that M Pasteau has kept a beady eye on the kitchen. Aside from one waiter who might do with a character adjustment, the rest of the polyglot staff (especially the maitre d') were genial and the 34 euro menu (3 courses) was a treat. The menu changes daily, so it is no use to tell you what we ate per se. Save to say, the rabbit special and polenta were fabulous. For desserts, get ready some exotic ice cream. We have been visiting this cute tiny place tucked away on a side street quite near to the Bon marche department store. It's a very tiny space with beams and great atmosphere But the food that comes from the tiny kitchen is just wonderful. We first went here in 2002. Then several years ago we became friends with a French family who had celebrated their wedding here with friends and blended families. They knew the chef well and told us how he sleeps from midnight to about three am each day and then gets up and goes to the market. He takes an afternoon nap but starts cooking upon returning from rungis market. That impressed us even more. The tables are close together but over the years we have become instant friends with those next to us. Most patrons here are French although the staff speaks English the menus are in french. I've never had a bad meal here. We have visited in spring summer and fall and the menus are seasonal and always wonderful. This chert does marvelous things with fish as well as with meats. Go. We had the fixed menu and there were several options, but the food was a bit too adventurous for us and not that tasty. Our starter was a plate of cold lentils topped by a boiled egg. Not appetizing. My husband had the fish which was decent. I had pork loin on a bed of blood red risotto, which tasted ok but was a bit alarming. Dessert was tasty - hazelnut cakes with poached pears and ice cream. The best dining experience I had in France. Turned up because of good reviews on Yelp but didn't think about how busy it would be on a Friday night. There was a queue outside and it seemed most people had bookings. Still, I spoke to the maitre d' and was told I might wait around 15 minutes for a table. She was true to her word and within 20 minutes we had a table prepared for us inside. The menu was only in French but the waitress was friendly and helpful and translated the options one by one so that we missed nothing. To be honest I think the reading of the menu added to the experience. She also helped us select a great wine to go with the food. The food was first rate. Not just for the price, but proper first rate. Then on top of that the price was excellent for what we got. The service remained enthusiastic, efficient and friendly throughout and despite how busy it was on the night they seemed to know exactly where we were up to in our courses and we never waited long for the next. We had such an interesting dinner here. First of all, if you don't have a reservation on a weekend night, even if you go early, you'll either have to wait for a spot to open up or you'll have the option of sitting at a group table. I recommend making a reservation, because if you sit at the family-style table, you're seated extremely close to the person next to you, and it's impossible to have a conversation without the whole table hearing. They have a selection of modern, interesting plates that the waitstaff will come around and explain to you in English if you need them to. Everything is plated in a really cool way, and they incorporate some cool techniques. Once the menu has been explained to you, you select one item from each category, and they're served to you in courses. On the night that we were here, as best as I can describe it, my husband had cauliflower soup; herring with sour cream, dill, squash, and seaweed salad; veal with a red wine sauce, zucchini, shallots, and mashed potatoes; and a peach-raspberry shortcake with mint ice cream. I had the cauliflower soup also; mussels with coconut foam and a thick, orange, Thai-flavored goo (I honestly don't know how to describe this correctly; it was unlike anything I've ever had before!); cod with mashed potatoes and a soy-sauce-based brown sauce; and rhubarb and a praline biscuit with ice cream. We definitely liked this place- it was unlike any food that we've ever had before- and would come back if we were staying nearby again. We did fine speaking half-English and half-French, and the waitstaff were very sweet. Considering how modern and innovative the dishes were, the prices were reasonable. read more

So many e-mails begging for a review. My wife and I went for dinner and while the cuisine had potential, it mostly fell flat on execution. We ordered pork and steak for our mains. The pork was dry and tough, and my medium-rare steak was done on the well side of medium. While the wait staff was reasonably helpful with the menu, they were all super busy, and no one came by to ask us how our meal was; when we attempted to provide feedback to the food runner/plate clearer, she seemed confused when we asked her to let the chef know that the pork was dry and way overcooked. I appreciate what the restaurant is going for with its eco philosophy, and the recipes were well thought out with complementary flavors, but the staff was too busy to be at all attentive (it's not fine dining, but it's a nice restaurant and you expect some level of attention) and the kitchen just flat out overcooked our mains. read more

The meal we had here was wonderful. From the amuse bouche of shrimp soup to the outrageously delicious warm chocolate mousse with lemon thyme ice cream...a pure delight to the senses. There were three of us so we were able to have a good representation of the chef's offerings. We started with a melange of vegetables including beets and artichoke hearts in a creamy leek purée, smoked salmon served on a bed of greens and a pumpkin soup with served several pieces of bacon. For the main course we had scallops served with cabbage, duck breast (cooked to perfection) & veal shank (off the bone) that was so tender no knife was required. And the desserts - OMG!! A green gazpacho of avocado and cilantro that was very nice but were served way too much. I had the Scottish salmon appetizer with pickled veggies that was a delight. Main courses were white fish pan seared with veggies and potatoes, very nice! And also a filet with broccoli risotto (no rice!), so tender and flavorful.
