Having a LL Bean in South Barrington is so nice and convenient! The store is very large and has a great inventory within all offering departments. I visited to look at their shoe department for a holiday gift. Don helped me and I could not have nicer things to say about him! He got me a variety of bean boot styles, heights, and sizes to try on to truly see which I liked best. After my research was complete, he found us back in the store to have me try one more boot that had my preferred size, width, height, and was on major sale! He never applied pressure for me to buy and actually recommended I put it on a hold if I wanted to think about it. He made sure I was well informed of my options and went above and beyond for me. I ended up coming back Sunday and bought the boots! LL Bean has some great products where I've bought blankets, flannels, sweaters, and slippers previously but Don's service was some of the best I've experienced in a while. read more

I am originally from New England so this is my favorite outdoors store. I love the quality of their clothing and the best part of it is if anything should happen to the product you purchased then you bring it back and get a new one. They stand behind their products and that's what keeps me coming back because their stuff last. This store is brand new in the area and is located in an outdoor shopping mall which has all kinds of other great stores so that's a plus. The store it's self is a little bit disorganized from what I am use to at other LL Bean stores and that maybe because they are new and still figuring things out. But they have all the great products that I love. I will say that the shoe selection is not as big as what I am accustomed to but maybe that's what they have for this year. Came in with my husband to look at winter coats on clearance. Store was laid out well, clean, neat, and pleasing aesthetics. We were greeted soon after we walked in and asked if we needed any help. We told her what we were looking for and she led us to the men's coat section and explained where the sale coats were. We couldn't decide between two coats because we weren't sure which one was warmer, so my husband asked one of the employees and they were very helpful. We were also approached in the middle of our shopping to see if we needed any help and when we said we were just looking around, the employee said OK and didn't hover. This store certainly has the right balance of customer service. We walked around the entire store to see what they had, but the only other thing we ended up purchasing was a men's shirt on clearance. The salespeople were super helpful and friendly. And I generally like their products. I was exchanging a couple of Christmas gifts, getting the exact same items in slightly different sizes. I ended up having to pay for some discrepancy or change in their pricing in the 3 weeks or so between the time the gifts were purchased and the date I was returning them. I LOVE THE BEAN!!! This place rocks. They have such quality stuff, and fair prices for the quality. But what you're really paying for is their FABULOUS customer service, and product guarantee. They really stand behind their stuff, which is amazing this day in age. Nobody stands behind their stuff like L.L. Bean. I've been raving about them to my friends and family lately. I just bought a great coat from them!! I've got a super-lightweight North Face coat ($260) but I've but on a lot of weight recently and needed to get a new one that fit me better for the moment. Well it just so happens that they carry a VERY similar line that is totally comparable in quality and weight... YAY for me!!! And to top it off, the day I went to buy my coat - they were on sale for 20% off, so it saved me $40. I brought my mom here, too - and she is now totally a fan!! She bought the exact same coat I did, but in a different color! LOL. It's fun to walk around this place and see the cool stuff they have. They even offer some "puttings"! For example - they were promoting a "How to Snow-shoe" event. How cool is that?! I thought it was. I'm not going, but the fact that they do stuff like that is really cool. I was trying to shop for my child and they told me I couldn't be in that area. They didn't try to assist me in any way. I came to L.L. Bean for some house slippers. The ones I saw on their website looked fit for a sheik so they seemed good enough for me. I read the reviews before going in here & was surprised at how popular this place is. Everyone was talking about how good the customer service was so I was interested to check the place out. I walked in & the place looked awesome from the custom woodwork on the doors to the overall layout it looked like it belonged in South Barrington. I didn't get the best customer service like everyone was talking about right away. I walked up to a worker & asked them if they had an item & he replied with if it's not on the shelf we don't have it. On my way out another employee began to help me & did a better job of checking if they had the item in stock. The employee also offered to order the item & have it shipped to me at no additional charge. Overall as a store they have a great return policy which is what a lot of places don't have any more. We went in the middle of the afternoon. Due to the high ceiling and the angle of the sun, much of the interior of the store was affected by absolutely BEAMING sunlight. I wish I had brought my sunglasses in from the car, because I couldn't see anything in some parts of the store! Aside from that, the experience was good. The store is divided into modules depending on the activity, so all the hiking stuff is in one spot while the biking stuff is in another and fishing is in another. Clothing is more towards the outside of the store. The staff was fairly reserved but the one interaction I had was nice! The employee and I chatted about a bike I was looking at for a little bit and then I wandered off to a different part of the store. I'd probably go back! One example: I was looking for a couple of different items and one of their great staff was helping me out. She handed the items I had already picked out to another staff member to set over by the register. A couple of minutes later, the second staff member approached and said he noted that one of the items I had selected had a flaw. He hadn't been able to find another item on the rack but was going to look in the back. He came back a few minutes later with a replacement. All this effort on his own initiative. Nevertheless, the staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and customer oriented. I got great insight into a sit-on-top kayak I'm considering. Prices are a bit on the higher side; however, everything I put my hands on was of at least solid quality. Store has a wifi LL Bean portal so you can multi-media shop/ research, etc. Shipping to the store is free. There's also a place for kids or non-shoppers to wait for their shopper. The center where the store is located also has a great variety in a village like setting so the destination adds to the experience. I'll definitely come back. The last couple visits have been somewhat sub par as far as service is concerned. They seem to be short staffed. Its hard to find anyone to help out. My wife and I have been L.L.Bean customers for over 30 years. The day finally came where we had to honor their 100% satisfaction guarantee. Their so called "guarantee" is a bit of a farce. My wife had a pair of L.L.Bean Gortex hiking boots that she had purchased several years ago but had seldom worn. She referred to them as the perfect hiking boot. Just a few minutes into a mountain hike, the "like new" soles on both boots completely peeled off. It appears the rubber/foam material that attaches the soles to the boots had crumbled and disintegrated. This is clearly a manufacturing defect. We returned the boots at the Barrington store, but since we did not have the original receipt, they would not refund, credit us, or replace the boots. The store associate told us they delete all computer sales records after two years, so they couldn't verify what price we purchased them for. The best they could offer us was a store credit of $27.99 for boots we're pretty sure we paid well over $100 for. We understand their policy for returns without a receipt, but these were obviously a manufacturing defect. The soles completely peeled off ! Other than that, the boots were in perfect condition. After we spend our $27.99 store credit, I think we're done with L.L.Bean. The ONE TIME in 30+ years we needed them, they failed to stand behind their product. I badly needed a winter jacket for the Chicago winter as I have to walk about 1.2 miles in downtown every day from train station to my workplace. So as usual I did a ton of research on winter jackets. Spent many hours online and going to stores to try out the jackets. Wanted something that fits well, lightweight but can keep me warm at -20F temps, not too expensive and looked good. It was getting a bit frustrating to find something that satisfied all my criteria. They were either expensive ($300+) or too bulky and heavy, or looks good but not well fitting. North Face was overpriced, Columbia parkas didn't fit well, Lands End was ok but made me look 10 years older. Among the lower end brands Free Country was of decent quality for the price but was a bit on the bulky side. Read a lot of good reviews about LL Bean but I was not comfortable buying a jacket without first trying it out. So finally decided to drive to the LL Bean store in South Barrington, thinking on my way that I am going crazy to drive 25 miles to try a jacket. But I am glad I did. The quality and fit was just perfect. The price is a bit over my budget, but it is well worth it. The store decor is great and staff is very friendly. I would give LL Bean 10 stars if I could. But the store gets four. LL Bean does everything right, their guarantees, their quality, their service. But lately their stocking (online and especially in this store) seems to be lacking. I've gone in several times looking for something only to find they don't have it. Their sales people have been confused about which desk to send me to with a return I had. There was a time where just about everything I wore came from here. But after several times of trying to order something, only to find it was back ordered for a month or more, I ended up checking out Cabela's. I'm still a loyal customer, and I like having this outlet nearby - but I wish it was stocked half as well as REI which is about the same size. read more

Went to the store for the first time, a bit wary because of some poor reviews of service. I was there mid-day on a weekday. My service experience was...WONDERFUL! Floor personnel were knowledgeable about products and knew the stock well. Dressing room personnel offered several times to retrieve different sizes or bring other items. The dressing rooms were large, with seating and many places to hang things. When I checked out, sales staff at the registers even ordered two "missing" items for me which will arrive at my home. Whenever there were three people in the line the staff called for extra help at the registers to keep things moving. All in all an experience I want to repeat. Plus it takes more than one visit to really absorb all that they carry. Glad I went - it is about an hour from my home to the store. read more

I love LL Bean... I grew up in Vermont, so I have always trusted LL Bean products, and know it is top quality. Now I am lucky enough to now have a LL Bean Store down the street from me. I thought the product was good...the customer service is AMAZING! We just purchased another kayak and two hullavator racks to haul them with. Larry went above and beyond modifying the mount to fit on our Trailblazer. He was very knowledgeable and made sure we knew how to get the kayaks on and off properly. Jeannie was a plethora of knowledge with my kayak and gave us a lot of good advice on products to go with, places to go, and trips that LL Bean takes you on. My husband purchased a Manatee last year, and I decided to research all the area stores for mine. (REI, Cabella's, bass pro shops, and online). I ended up where I started..LL Bean! The product is definitely top quality, and we love the fact that the staff is very knowledgeable, and they mount and put together and mount our kayak racks! After an hour on the phone, we are getting replacement canoes, but this entails waiting for two more freight companies - one to pick up the damaged canoes and a different freight company to drop off the new canoes.
