They make great Scotch Eggs (there's also a vegetarian version of this) and have a pretty extensive collection of beers. My personal favourite is the Lagunitas IPA which hard to find in Ireland. One of the best meals we have had in Ireland and that's from us foodies. Very unassuming pub/restaurant away from the city center. The menu was small and perfect. Menus are typed and held in actual classic books is a new and cool way to bring your attention. I had the Chicken Kiev which started to look like fried chicken until i started to dig into it and it was divine. The sides were so tasty and went well with my chicken. There is a management problem at this restaurant. The food is good, the whiskey list is great, and they do an adequate job with the beer. They do not operate the floor well. When I was there, three servers ran the entire floor with no bus support. One of those servers was brand new and god bless her, tried her hardest. It was not their fault they failed. Management needs to hire to properly bus and set tables so the servers can do their jobs well. It was a terrible experience with a very obvious solution. read more

This is a great looking pub/restaurant. I would have been happy enough whiling away some time here enjoying the excellent selection of beers that they have, from both keg and cask. Luckily for me a wise decision was made to also eat here. The veggie burger here was likely the most interesting and unusual veggie burger I have ever enjoyed. And I truly did enjoy it. So much going on in my mouth I couldn't keep track! Here is how the menu describes it, so you have some idea - House-made spiced chickpea and aubergine burger, Ardsallagh Goats cheese, beetroot coleslaw, Paris Bakery rosemary & tomato bun, Mulligaloe relish, The beer was delicious. One of the more authentic Irish pub/restaurants to eat at but was slightly overpriced for the quality and taste of food in my opinion. For service, the waiter was just unfamiliar with the menu which only had around 8 entrees. My friend asked to make sure if the type of meat for a dish was fish and the waiter first said that he had no idea and then responded that it "should be." Clearly, didn't know the menu. For appetizers, ordered their well known Scotch Egg which was DELICIOUS AND DESERVES 5 STARS on its own. It was a seasoned yolk egg with fried and salted outer shell that came with two sauces -- one like a salsa and the other a seasoned relish mayo. Delicious, warm, and hit the spot. I ordered the the chicken kiev, which to my innocent surprise, was fried! Regardless, I felt that the outer seasoning for the frying could have used more seasoning but the meat inside was perfectly cooked. Also came with two herb buttered pieces of corn and a red cabbage slaw and a whole cup of "chips" or fries. Really good veggie sides that helped to bring the meal together and created a good introduction to Irish traditional cuisine. We almost left when we learned that they don't serve Guinness (they serve a similar stout by Porterhouse Brewery, also in Dublin), but we were so glad we stayed for the great ambiance (far superior to the standard Dublin pub atmosphere), the exquisite dining (the brisket was, again, leagues better than standard pub fare), and friendly service. Back sooner than expected but with a bit of forethought this time. We booked a table, which was done by email via their website (it was all very easy). It was much more enjoyable this time with a proper table booked. It was brighter and there was more space. The conversation was much better too, now that we weren't looking at a wall. Mulligans is, by far, one of my favourite places to eat in Dublin. I can't count the number of times I've been there now. The place managed to recapture that "old pub" feel; they have groceries behind the door, everything is wooden and looks like an "old man pub". They serve somewhat traditional pub food with a more contemporary edge (don't roll your eyes, it's not as douchey as it sounds). Also the menu changes regularly which I always feel is a very good thing in a restaurant. You frequently see dishes such as roasted pork belly with bubble and squeak potato cakes, homemade chicken kievs and wild board burgers. The best thing on the menu in Mulligans, though, are the skotch eggs. They usually have three kinds on the menu; standard sausage meat (always delicious), veggie (also delicious) and another skotch egg that rotates with the menu. For the... uh... "skotch egg rotation" I have seen smoked haddok and black pudding skotch eggs amongst other things. Even though they have many other delicious starters here, I have never been able to bring myself to order something other than a skotch egg. Mulligans is also a great place to drink; they have a massive selection of craft beers and whiskeys. On the menu they have recommended pairing of beer with all their meals and whiskey with their deserts. The bar staff are more than happy to recommend and talk your ear off about their drinks. Mulligans also has a partner micro brewery ( the Brown Paper Bag Project) that brews some of the tastiest beers around. Mulligans is a great place to have a meal then sit around drinking for the night sampling tasty beers and whiskeys. If you feel like treating yourself to an evening of fancy eating and drinking this is your place. read more

So the positives: friendly staff, cool atmosphere, excellent selection of craft beers and decent tasting food. The not-so-positives: I think it's over-priced for what you get. The portions are really quite small and my fiancé's burger was a "bacon&cheese" burger. Literally the sliver of bacon was non-existent and we couldn't see the cheese. That was €16! My vegetarian burger was €15. (I can't believe it was only €1 less and for no meat!!!) It was also small. It did taste nice though. Finally Dublin has a bar whose range of beers goes beyond the usual muck we throw into ourselves. A fine selection of craft beers both Irish and imported. The owners work the bar and are extremely knowledgeable and willing to chat you through what's on offer. They have yet to get their food sorted but we chatted at length yesterday about their sourcing and menu styles and it sounds like they are on to a serious winner. Drop one star for the tunes. Mulligan Grocer. So many delicious micro-brews that will kick the ass of any monster brews from Budweiser to Guinness. Don't get me wrong, if I had a choice between those two I'd pick Guinness hands down, and in fact it is refreshing for me being here in Dublin now that I don't have to worry about whether or not a bar I go into will have anything besides beer that looks like piss, because in Minnesota, that's never a sure thing. But, after going into so many pubs and seeing Guinness dominating every glass I have to wonder, "Wasn't one of the reasons that I hated beers like Budweiser because it was such a huge corporate name? And, even though I like the way Guinness tastes, if I have a similar, higher quality choice, shouldn't I always go for the little man? Isn't that what I claim to be all about?" However, I digress. The plain and simple point is, L. Mulligan Grocer has an incredible selection of excellent beers (and all kinds of great single malt whiskies from all over the world) and you know that most likely what you drink will be helping out a small micro-brewery that is going to battle against the big guys with weapons of quality instead of quantity and great taste. Mulligans has changed ownership since the last review, and believe me, it's entirely new. Since yesterday, it's a gastro-pub called "L. Mulligan. Grocer". It sells a fantastic range of Irish craft beers bottled and on tap, an extensive range of whiskies (Irish and otherwise), and promises to serve new local twists on traditional gastro-pub dishes (once the kitchen is ready). Having said all that, they've kept the pub looking very similar to what it was before -- a classic Dublin pub. Nicely done. Really lovely place. I love the quirky decor and the relaxed vibe. The menu is very interesting with each dish accompanied by a beer or whiskey suggestion and the food almost completely lived up to all the hype. I was left slightly disappointed by the potted crab but overall it was very good. The ham hock my friend ordered was particularly good. Staff are very friendly. We had a long chat with one of the owners about their 200 or so bottle whiskey collection and sampled a couple of excellent suggestions. Worth the very short trip out of the city centre. read more

I had been reading 9beanrow (http://www.9beanrow.com/) for a few weeks and enjoying the innovative recipes focused on products sourced from in and around Dublin. I was delighted to read recently that the blogger of 9beanrow is part-owner in a newly opened gastropub in Stoneybatter, so it instantly shot to the top of my list for trying. I had high expectations and thankfully was not disappointed. Hubs and I shared twice cooked chips with aioli dip, steamed mussels, and the potted crab & sourdough soldiers--all of which was exquisite. The crab was served cold but was fresh and flavorful. The mussels tasted of rich broth and didn't get a single unpleasant grain or closed shell. As a fan of microbreweries I was glad to see a huge beer list including microbrews from Dublin, some goodies from California, and a ton of my favorite imported beers on tap. We washed down our dinners with a Hoegarden as big as my head and hubby's Molly's Chocolate Stout. I can honestly say I'll be back soon and trying everything on the menu. I have been in and out of Mulligans couple of times for a drink or two and always wanted to try their dinner menu as my friends been going on about it! So we finally made it for dinner the other day after work and our expectations weren't let down from drinks through main till desert! Our waitress was amazing she took my allergies really serious and helped me with the menu, so I combined 2 starters as my main, soup of the day and the beef bruchetta but instead the bread they layered it on roasted squash! That what made my day the little things if a restaurant is able to think outside the box and make a customer with allergies happy! My friend had the venison burger and absolutely loved it too! I'm crazy about this place, and am so glad I found out about it through Aer Lingus's recent plane issue on Stoneybatter. The carrot-ginger soup with goat cheese was fantastic, but the chorizo bon-bons were to die for. I don't know what half the ingredients on that plate were, but the dish was beautifully arranged and the taste was perfect. I couldn't believe I was at a pub--this felt like an upscale affair. Limited beer list, but they have a fun variety, including some great hipster choices from the US (e.g., Ska Brewing from Colorado). I LOVE this place. The wonderful Emily C brought me and Elliot A here for a meal. From the outside, I must admit, I thought, what the bleeding hell are we doing HERE? But as I took a stroll to the surprisingly hip restaurant at the back of the bar, I started to see a different side to this place. The staff here are great - friendly without being overbearing, timely without rushing us. The food was even better - I recommend trying the black pudding as starter - it really was delicious (and apparently it's a favourite amongst locals). I had moules frites for my main, it was superb. I also sampled the aptly menu named "lovely gravy" on Emily's roast pork main. I concur that it is, indeed, lovely. Wine was good, atmosphere was good, food was fantastic (fairly busy, book ahead to guarantee a table). I want to leave space for dessert next time. Oh, and they give you sweeties with your bill. After seeing a film at the Light House, a friend and I strolled over to L Mulligan for a bite. The waiter, wearing a nifty grocer's apron, talked us through the extensive beer and whisk(e)y menu, and made recommendations based on our food choices. He even offered my friend a taste of a beer on tap to see if he wanted to change his order. This waiter was so excited about the products, he couldn't get his words out fast enough. I was impressed by his knowledge and his willingness to have a chat. There was no rush to our order, and that's getting rarer these days. The food was tasty but not everything I'd dreamed. It wasn't too hard to choose what I wanted, seeing as I could only eat three of their offerings. I know pork is big in fall, but really? We started with wild mushrooms sauteed in blue cheese, on sourdough. The effete cousin of beans on toast, this starter was melty, tangy, salty and overall great. The sourdough toast was really sour, cutting through the creamy cheese, and both parties proclaimed it a success. Five stars. As for the mains, I chose the butternut squash tagine while my friend took a beef stew with croquettes. The couscous was really dry under my butternut, and the squash was nice but tasted more tomatoey than tagine-spiced. The stew, however, was nice. The beef was tender and the croquettes, I heard, were tasty. Three stars. For dessert, we splurged on the chocolate stout mousse, made with Molly's Chocolate Stout from Hilden. Mousses should be thoroughly blended but we both felt the stout flavour came in and out inconsistently throughout the mousse, with some bites stout-free and some overly bitter. Four stars. When we got the bill, it came with a little paper bag filled with gummies (jellies, are they, here?) - cute but stale. 3.5 stars for the effort. When in the neighbourhood again, I'll return to see how the menu evolves with the seasons. Also, of course, I'll come back for the beer selection. When I say extensive, I mean it: two pages of bottled beers, a full page of whisk(e)ys... this is the place to get your drinking snob out and flaunt it. Four stars. read more

The staff are warm and are all over the place, catering to all tables. The beer selection is huge. The craft beer revolution is taking place in Dublin and this place has them all. We tried many different ones and loved them all. If we had questions the waitstaff were more than happy to give us a taste. But as I stated before this was the best of many meals in Ireland. We had the pork belly and the trout. The pork had a thick crispy end that gave great texture to the moist meat and the trout had a fresh taste and wonderful sides, like the small crab cakes. Ah-ha - so this is where the obscure-craft-beer-loving, fancy-whiskey-drinking, laid-back-friendly-conversation-loving folks are on a Saturday night. We went here for a birthday party, & we were pleasantly surprised: comfy seats, no loud music (you can hear people speaking from across your table!), a knowledgeable waitress bringing our drinks, & a menu that brings pub fare to another level (Leek & tarragon soup, lamb burgers, seasonal mixed mushrooms, etc. etc. nomnom) - I opted for a Williams (alcoholic) Ginger Beer, and a rum & coke made with Sailor Jerry's rum later. The fella had two pints from Trouble Brewing. Fantastic. Overall - I look forward to going back to try their food (along with this ginger-spiced porter I saw on the menu), and the quality time we had with our friends made for one of the best pub birthdays I've been to (so far). As much as I love a good pint of black, I sometimes want something different. If you feel the same way, then Mulligan's is the place for you. They specialize in Irish and UK craft beers, with about 14 or so taps and 2 on cask. There's also a very deep bottles list with selections from around the world, including a respectable number of US producers. Food here is also top notch. Among the better dishes are the chicken Kiev, the rib-eye steak and the slow roasted pork belly. The crab starter, Scotch egg and daily soups are also quite outstanding. The desserts looked quite appealing, but there's usually no room after food and lots of beer. However, there's always room for an after-dinner drink, and the wide variety of whisk(e)y, while a bit daunting, certainly fit the bill. Once a coachman's inn on the road to Tara, Mulligan's of Stonybatter has undergone extensive renovation and reopened as a gastro-pub, which sounds like an abdominal complaint, but actually means food other than toasted sandwiches and crisps. I haven't tried the food yet, so enchanted I was by the glorious sight of about 60 different kinds of whisky lined up behind the bar...my lovely companion was similarly impressed with the range of beers and wines. The interior is quite lovely, lots of wood and low tables, no television, conversations murmuring around us ...sipping on a Laphroaig, shrouding heartache in the mist of distant peat bogs. Meanwhile svelte stripling servers in striped aprons whisk about; easy on the eye, but I like my men like I like my whisky...aged and mellow. Omg yes. This spot was right around the corner from the flat we'd rented for our week in Ireland and it was a big win for us! We dropped our bags and went right to dinner here the first night we landed. It was excellent! The overall atmosphere is just too cool--beautiful and well-stocked bar, exceedingly friendly staff, fun pictures on the wall, and a general air of Irish coziness that started our trip off perfectly. The menu was extensive and approachable, which was really well appreciated. Their vegetarian offerings were noteworthy (the veg scotch egg!) but the farm-raised chicken was immediately enticing. Definitely one of the best meals I've had in a while thanks to their sincere attention to detail and the artistry with which they cook. Drinks and pudding (the crumble) were also exceptional. After lovely day in Dublin City centre where I met John Giles and got his new booked signed for my Dad. A true gentleman and real old school Dublin who went to school in Brunswick Street School or Brunner as it more commonly know. My Dad also went to school there and grew up in Stoneybatter so I thought I would try out Mulligans in Stoneybatter and go back to a part of Dublin that is close to my heart. All the previous reviews I had read about Mulligans suggested that it was the sort of place I would love. Good food, good beer and great staff, what more could you want. Well it ticked all those boxes. I had the Breaded Haddock with the twice cooked chips with tartare sauce and peas as a side. The fish was plentiful and very tasty and the cips were crispy but not too hard in the inside. You get about 7 chips but they are big chunky chips and certainlyl filling. I had all this with a glass of tap water and the bartender offered me ice and lemon, which is always a nice touch. I do not like to have a heavy stout with a meal and like to give it a good few minutes before I do so. So I read the paper and my book and charged my phone and used their wifi service. After this I went for the Porterhouse Plain which I have had many times in the Porterhouse. Here it showed that it was well looked after in the barrell and lines as it was the perfect temperature and gorgeous taste. I will certainly return here and I made a booking for the night of my birthday here to have a few drinks and a nice meal before we head out. I was well impressed and when I get enough money, you know I may even buy a house in Stoneybatter. Great staff, great food and great beer. read more

The egg timer served on an block of wood with an oldey timey milk bottle and a side order of that coffee you asked for is verging on the ridiculous. Still, for all my cynicism, they're a great pub.
