Every time I come here, I have a delicious meal. I am never let down. I have tried their burger, their chicken kiev, their fish and chips, they are all absolutely delicious. "This is where happy people eat." "When you eat like this, you know the holidays have begun!" I could not have left any happier. This place deserves five stars for the food alone, and then another five for the brew selection. It is a little pricier to dine here than elsewhere (1 starter, two mains, two brews, two desserts with recommended whiskeys ran us about €75), but it is SO WORTH IT. Hell, it was full on a Sunday night! The ingredients are ALL from Irish suppliers. I really dig when restaurants buy local, not just because it's good for the local economy, but also because fresher tastes better. That rings just as true here. The black pudding starter became an object of lust and struggle, which was only settled by its ultimate disappearance from the plate. Wounds caused were healed over with some pints from the Bru brewery, specifically the Bru Dubh (a nice, dry stout) and Bru Rua (a fruity red ale). The mains were the Chicken Kiev, which at a mere "excellent, delicious" was the underperformer of the evening. My pan-seared trout and crab croquette evoked religious hallucinations. Age-old differences based on the Black Pudding Conflict were reignited as sharing became strained. Eventually, a detente was achieved and forkfulls flowed more freely in both directions. Many thanks and praise were raised to the heavens. Dessert was really impressive. The whiskey selection here is quite extensive and offers so many different experiences, to say nothing of the excellent dessert pairing recommendations. The chocolate and stout mousse was paired with Dalmore 12, which has such a sweet, almost raisin-like nose, and a honey-red hue in the snifter. The chocolate brownie was paired with a Redbreast 12, which, though drier than the Dlamore 12, has a classically sweet peatyness to it. I recommend this place to everyone who is looking for excellent food and/or craft brews in a non-pretentious place. read more

Miss this place since I left Stoneybatter. Scotch Eggs are what I keep coming back for but the food overall is amazing. Constantly changing with the seasons. Craft beers as far as the eye can see. Visited last week and drank Kilruddery Burnt Red IPA Special Edition on draught and also sampled the new "Brown Bag Project" Amber Ale from the new brewery ran by the owners of Mulligan's. Both outstanding. Barman was extremely friendly and informative and gave us samplers of cask ales and IPAs on draught. We tried a "Hairy Goat" from Mountain Man Brewing Co. which was lovely aswell. Typical of a new style of bar in Dublin. The staff are wonderful and very attentive. The selection of beer is varied and the food is good. So a nice place to spend some time. However: The beer is very overpriced as is the food. For a bar that prides itself on its beer selection it tends to attract a lot of guys with beards who don't seem to know a lot about beer. Favourite pub in the city...in the country...actually any-bloody-where. It's just great. A place with a real focus on quality in all areas and a friendly, knowledgeable staff. The weekly-changing menu oozes with the best of local produce, from mussels to steak to chilli-sausages...divine. The draught beers are the best ireland has to offer as well as a couple of good continental brews, whilst the bottled selection would take you weeks to plough through (brilliant selection of Brewdog ales, pilsners and stouts was great to see). All beers served in their proper glasses too....I can't be the only one to get distraught when my lovely pint of hoegaarden is degraded in a Fosters glass! The whisk(e)y menu is equally impressive. Tried their new little beer garden out the back yesterday (I'm writing this review with full blown lobster-arms/rudolph nose) and it was a delight - and a total suntrap (actually had to move into the shade as it was too hot...at 6pm...IN IRELAND - what's going on?!) This is one of those 'often mentioned' craft brew pubs. But it has always been to me - 'Where is it?' (I am not from Dublin, tell me a shop and I can get you there. Street names.... ???? ) I eventually walked myself to this pub where a couple of friends were meeting. It wasn't that hard to WALK to as I enjoy a walk as much as anything. The prob I had before, and then, was that getting buses to here from the city was very very confusing. The place/venue/premises is very much 'normal/old style pub', Nothing like it's new 'spacious' sister pub WJ Kavanaghs. But sure that is what Ireland and our pubs are about and as such it is a nice and bright pub. The staff are knowledgeable about the different brews. The prices are alright, lower end of Dublin prices. I had had food in another pub but as always I am interested, and gauge pubs, by their food selection and prices. But this seems to be a challenge, or at least it was to me on this night. Their drinks, and food it is rumoured, menus come in old books. Yes I saw drinks menu upon drinks menu in books but I couldn't seem to get my hands on a food menu. I was informed, by a friend with us that it would be along the Porterhouse prices - which is fine by me - so I will take her word for it. Back for the first time since last review last Saturday. Delighted to report that it's as good as ever. I tried to book a table on the prior Wednesday - sorry - booked out! (good to see). However we were encouraged to call in and either grab somewhere in the bar or wait to see if a table came free. So we did. Place was buzzing (7.30pm on a Saturday evening). We pit our names down to wait for a table in the restaurant area, and meanwhile we amused ourself trying various beers from the ample selection. For me that meant a trip to the Metalman tap followed by one of 8 degrees' Reds. Great to be able to drink craft Irish beer these days :-) We got a table after about 45 minutes, and had an excellent meal. All my earlier comments apply: great staff, strong sense of humour in menu, staff, and the "little touches" (e.g. bag of gummy sweets with the bill). Food was really good - the mussels and the black-pudding-stuffed-chicken being some of the highlights. So yes : it's great. And as Annie L says in her review - if you have people visiting from anywhere, bring them here: it's different, it's fun, it's Irish, it's modern. Brill. read more

I've been here three times now at various times of the week and this place is always packed. if you wanna sit down I'd recommend booking in advance! The food is great, really good and the place has its own vibe with pretty cool bar staff. They also have a great selection of beers and they are not jumping on the band wagon they have been doing this for a long time. The food is very funky, from the scotch egg which is amazing to the crab which i seem to remember being served in a jam jar. The mains although familiar sounding all have an interesting twist which makes it stand out a bit. For instance here's a main from the xmas menu Free Range Termonfeckin Turkey Kiev, Ham Hock Stuffing, Frankincense & Myrrh Butter, Sage & Crackling Crumb, Smoked Bacon Mash, White Wine Roasted Sprouts, Lovely Gravy €17.50 Recommended Beer: Bosprotter Tripel Sounds great doesnt it! I had the chicken kiev last time and it was excellent. You will notice the recommended beer to go with the meal, a nice touch. Why not 5 stars? Last Friday, I spent most of the day walking around Dublin in the rain. By the time I got to L. Mulligan Grocer I was soaked, tired and generally having a very grumpy day. After I was done, though, I was exceptionally happy and glad that I went in. I almost didn't, actually, because I thought it was literally a Grocer and I was looked for cooked food and not groceries. It wasn't until I saw the menu that I realized what the place was. The place reeks of ambiance. In a good way, of course. The place is essentially a very clean Irish pub. I know, it's crazy. They have all these little things like placing menus inside old hardcover books and your check inside a vintage compass case, which were cute though a little random. I didn't really feel a unified theme besides Olden Timey, but overall it was pleasant. In terms of service the waitstaff and bartenders were absolutely wonderful. In fact, it felt like they were genuinely happy to be working there. Always a good sign. They were patient with me as I was very, very tired and had some major hearing problems to boot. The food was absolutely wonderfully fantastic. I had a slow-cooked pork belly with a shallot tart on top, potatoes and mashed carrots to the side and some bacon on top. It was one of the best pork belly dishes I've ever had and, well, I like my pork bellies. I had a cider on tap---forgot which one---which complemented the meal quite well. In any case, this place is utterly charming. Their food is amazing. If I was ever in Dublin again I'd probably go back. read more

This was exactly what I wanted it to be. A real local feel to the place and the area. I would definitely recommend the scotch eggs and the sticky toffee pudding! The food is good grub that also feels like effort has gone into designing the menu. Staff were very friendly and there was a muddle with the ordering that saw a free glass of wine in our hands- we certainly weren't complaining! The front of the place is a traditional pub style and the back is raised with big wooden tables to seat groups. We were seated in a great location that allowed us a view of the two areas bang in the middle! I would be back in a heartbeat. A must for those wanting to a bit of the real Dublin! read more

This is a fantastic spot a bit removed from all the action in the center of Dublin. The term 'gastropub' doesn't quite do it justice, as it seems to maintain it's Irish authenticity and charm while simply enhancing the beer offerings and creative food selections. The place has a feel of an upscale pub. Everything is beautifully kept up and a bit rustic/nostalgic, and the bar is beautiful! The menus are repurposed books. A bit cumbersome and clunky to go through, but the concept is grand. We showed up without a reservation, and the LMG staff was kind enough to find a seat for the three of us anyway. It happened to be the darkest table in the restaurant (a point that they wanted us to understand before we agreed to be seated), but we were happy to sit there. About 10 minutes later, they asked if we wanted to be reseated as a reservation canceled, but our original table wasn't quite as dark as they had made it out to be. But kudos for checking in and asking us! I feel like we had 3-4 different servers coming by to take our drink orders, bring drinks, take our food orders, bring food, check in on us, etc. A strange way to do things, but nothing was lost in the shuffle, and it seemed pretty seamless. Everyone was extremely helpful, friendly and patient with us Americans despite how busy the establishment was on a Sunday night. We ordered a round of drinks, and I was happy at their diversity of beers on draft. I can't remember exactly what I ordered, but it was a kind of stout with hints of chocolate and cherries. VERY good. The food was also very, very good. I had the chicken kiev, and it was prepared perfectly. My dad and brother also really enjoyed their meals. We ended it by splitting two desserts. I wish I could remember what they were, but suffice to say we did not make a bad choice. I don't know if that's really possible here. The only knock on the place is that they were out of two or three entrees when we placed our order - and it was only about 8pm! Chicken kiev was my second choice...although after I ate it I forgot all about that. Ditto with my drinks. Option number two was also great. First night in Dublin was super fun! We were told to go here and the place was packed! We got right in and the food was delicious!

I'm not sure what I think about this place. I'm conflicted. Good food should be complimented by good service and a pleasant dining room. Can't fault the service for sure. Anyway, The big son was here at Christmas and raved about it so when he was back in town last week, he inveigled us to make the trek to Stoneybatter to try it out. I say trek but, to be fair, it's no more than a 15 minute brisk walk from O'Connell Bridge and the Luas stops nearby anyway. We arrived early for our 6.30 booking and the dining area was empty. This, by the way, is in the back of a pub and the seating and ambience is, shall we say, basic. They also do that twee thing of inserting the menu into the centre of the kind hardback book bought by the yard. Said menu was poorly typed and somewhat bedraggled so the omens were not good. It was a Tuesday night in February but it never really filled up. At peak, I'd say it was no more than 50% full so the atmosphere was dead. The food, however, was another thing entirely and the sad-looking menu revealed some real treats. Starters of black pudding, salmon, delicious Bon Bon meat balls and a really good ploughmans platter were all excellent. Mains of chicken burgers (to the dismay of one of the party there were no beef burgers on offer for some strange reason), steaks and moules frites were equally good and the fries on the side were excellent. The menu also, in keeping with a vague gastropub motif, suggested beers to accompany each course but we opted instead for an excellent Crianza with a couple of additional glasses so good was it. One dessert, tea and coffee brought the bill to a very reasonable €170 for four. Not cheap but good value. All agreed that it was an excellent repast. I might be back but there are nicer places in the city with equally good food. Loved the food, the venue not so much. read more

We had two friends join us for dinner, they had not been before! we had a booking for 9pm on Saturday, good buzz when we arrived but not too busy. A bit of faff when we first arrived we were told to have a drink, then brought half way to our table, and back to the bar again. We shred the two Black pudding starters which were delicious, I had the pork belly which was very good, soft tasty meat, good crisp crackling. The Boar Burger had run out, would have fancied trying that. Also Cote de Rhone was out of stock also. We shared Cheese and the crumble to finish both of which were superb. Really good experience, cannot recommend this place enough. Then home for dancing and red wine! read more

I would definitely recommend this place. If you haven't been, its well worth a look. The owners have kept the old charm of the place, and also made their own stamp on it. There's not many places in Dublin where you have a really nice new vibe and also a real sense of a local. Mulligans do this perfectly. Colin, Mick and Shauna really know how to run a bar and treat their customers. I've always felt very welcome here and they really appreciate your custom too, which I think is important. As for the restaurant, well its almost there, but not quite. The food is good, but not great, which is a pity. In saying that it is still very tasty and well worth a visit. The wine list is fantastic and well priced. This is easily the best place in Stoneybatter for wine. The staff are all very friendly. If you are looking for a beer/whiskey recommendation you will be well advised. I have found some amazing beers and ales here, some great whiskeys and amazing scotch too, all thanks to the staff. This is a great addition to Stoneybatter. It seems to be going from strength to strength and I hope this continues. read more

Great spot for a relaxed meal - but without a relaxed attitude to the food. The quality of the food was excellent, and had a flair to the use of ingredients and flavours that impressed. Although one of us (not me) thought the portions a little small, esp. for the steak which was the priciest item on the menu at €24 (I think). We had a meal for two, 2 x starters, mains, deserts, 2 x aperitif and a couple of beers each, PLUS the recommended whiskey for the brownie and the whole lot came to just over €100. The black pudding starter was a highlight - a refreshing new take on a starter I long ago got bored of. The desert also was epic (even coming from a non-desert person). We both had the chocolate brownie with salted caramel sauce and praline...it was made even more delish by the addition of a shared Bowmore 15 whiskey - not something I would have tried if it wasn't listed as a drink pairing. Downside was the service was a little fast to start and then almost absent at the end when we were looking to pay up and go. We had starters and mains delivered before we'd even gotten through the aperitif...which is a pity because we would have liked to relax over the aperitif and probably order a couple of the beer pairings with our mains. read more

I really love this lil gem in Stoneybatter- the food is always excellent and the selection of craft beers is really big too. I pop in here quite often and the quality of food stays exceptional, but yesterday I ordered the mussels in white wine and tomato sauce and to my surprise the tomato sauce was cold... And made the muddled cold. They were still lovely mussels, but I really didn't understand the reason behind the cold tomato sauce! The service is good, nothing exceptional, but sometimes the staff seem not really in tune with what's happening around them. Called them once and the guy that answered wasn't sure when the food starts and if the top part of the bar will be open for food. They usually start food at 5, but one day we came in and were told that the top part is open only at 6 and we couldn't sit there, so we waited at the bar as waiter suggested... Then a table of Americans just walked in and sat down on the table upstairs and they were not asked to wait... Thought it was a bit strange.... Anyways, would highly recommend this place for everyone and I will definitely come back here myself! read more

Have been several times and while the food is good (can be great depending on what you order) there is no variation. The menu stays the same and there is limited choice. A shame really, there are clearly excellent chefs, a change up on the menu would be great. Choice of drinks is vast, so vast that you sometimes don't know what to choose. However, this isn't really a specialty anymore, plenty of places offer a wide selection of craft beers etc. So I can't understand the over pricing of many drinks. After my initial experience at L. Mulligan last year I have had the pleasure of eating here a few more times. And while each experience was enjoyable, it has not achieved the same calibre of that first unexpected meal. We most recently ate here earlier this week and my potted crab starter was extremely bland as was the chocolate, nuts and banana dessert. The chicken kiev however was quite good as well as J's black pudding starter. I still think this place has a great atmosphere and a unique menu but my past three times have been somewhere between a 3 and 4 star meal, rather than a knock-out. Will return though! read more

Part of the growing culture of craft brew pubs turning up in Dublin over the last few years, L Mulligans is one of the best. The style of pub that was made very popular by the Porterhouse has taken a step further in recent years. The Galway Bay brewing company have refurbished 2 Dublin pubs, L Mulligans Grocer and in 2012 Kavanaghs (Dorset Street). The other company doing this have opened Against the Grain, The Black Sheep and Brew Dock. This is a move that makes me happy! No generic brands on sale! This review is for L Mulligans, which from the outside hasn't changed much; go through the doors and enter a world where your menu (beer and food) comes inside an old edition of a book! 'What book did you get?' rings around the table followed by snippets from some forgotten tome...... The food menus also suggest a beer or a whiskey to accompany all of the meals! Fantastic, have bangers and mash accompanied by O'Hara's stout, or pork belly with a crisp English cider! It's a novel (pardon the pun) and very interesting idea, and proves a conversation starter. The food was overall very good; crackling with said pork was a joyous thing. There were one or two missteps, the bangers were slightly over cooked, and the service was haphazard. But always came with a smile. However the small touches are as a friend of mine puts it 'pure class'; an egg timer with your coffee press, a bag of Haribo sweets with the bill. This came in an old fashioned pencil case....great stuff guys. The pub itself has a holiday feel, think gastro-pub in Yorkshire! It doesn't have a late licence, so get there early to sample the many brews they offer. It is also a whiskey specialist with many types you won't find in most places! read more

Decidedly underwhelming grub for a pub that makes much of its gastro credentials with prices to prove it. Aside from that it's a lovely spot with a broad range of craft beers, though the waiter's recommendation in the absence of the chosen one proved wide off the mark. My companion's wild boar burger went down well, but my moules were tiny and flavourless, despite the shell size. I would have left starving but for the chocolate and beetroot cake, which was nice. I love the idea of this place and god knows the northside needs more with similar aspirations, but on both occasions I've been there, I've come away disappointed with the grub (and slightly aghast at the bill). read more

They served me the best steak I have literally ever eaten. Not figuratively, literally. It melted in my mouth, the texture was just perfect and the taste...out of this world. I have no idea what kind of voodoo they're doing back in the kitchen, but I ate there two days in a row and it was just as good the second time. They have the best food I had during my entire stay in Ireland, the only pity was I didn't go there until my second to last day. Everything is of the highest quality and responsibly sourced locally. The menu changes by the day to make the best use of what ingredients are currently in season. Just...phenomenal. If you are in Dublin you owe it to yourself to get here if at all possible. L Mulligans is around the corner from my house and I count myself lucky for this on a weekly basis (along with other strokes of luck including top notch friends and a higher than average alcohol tolerance). This place has one of the best beer selections in Dublin with a rotating menu that changes weekly. 20+ beers on tap plus dozens more by the bottle - there is something for everyone's taste. The food is outstanding for pub grub - 10 steps above the norm with genuinely creative menu items that illicit regular 'mmm's and 'oh yeah's from diners. Vegetarians rejoice! There is creative food for you here too (not cornered into pasta aggaaainn)! It's a little pricier than average, though, to align with it's above average quality. Be mindful. The best part? They have scrabble. I love scrabble so much that I would subject myself to a bar that only served coors light on tap if they had scrabble. Luckily, I don't have to do that. I can enjoy a black IPA while I destroy my competitors at scrabble. I am, indeed, lucky and L Mulligans is, indeed, one of the best pubs in town. read more

Very disappointed with this place. Was in the stoneybatter area looking for a quick bite and I had spotted this establishment on yelp on various occasions. Both myself and my date ordered the bacon cheese burgers with triple fried chips. We found that the meat was undercooked which making us feel ill later. It did taste quite nice which is why it got the 3 stars. However in consideration that you are paying 16 euro for this and coupled with a strong smell of damp from the pub neither of us particularly enjoyed the meal and were eager to leave read more

Stoneybatter is Dublin's up and coming hipster mecca and smack bang in the middle of manor street you find L Mulligan grocer. Typical pub facade nothing out of the ordinary going on but step inside to the wonderful world of gastro pub dining and craft beer deliciousness. No Heineken or Bulmers in sight. Try something you have never had before, go on! You won't regret it. The staff have a vast knowledge of the beers/ciders/whiskeys and are more than happy to advise. The menu at the moment had choices from Chicken Kiev and Pork Belly but all served with a fine dining twist that embraces Irish produce. The food is fantastic and to keep with the hipster vibe the menu pages are inserted into old hardback books. (I am a sucker for this kind of thing) At the end of the meal they bring your receipt in an old Maths set tin, with a surprise brown paper bag of penny jellies. (Dream) All in all Mulligans serves up a fun dining experience, delicious food and excellent craft beers. read more

Had a really lovely relaxed evening at my new local last night. I brought in a work friend who was over from England who was equally impressed by the food and drink pairings. We had the smoked trout pate to share between us to start. What a lovely surprise when we popped open the pot of pate, a gentle gust of smoke oozed out to greet us. I have to admit I'm a sucker for these extra little touches and it made me even more excited to taste it. It was delish! Mains: I tried the vegetarian haggis and my friend had the fish and chips. I was so intrigued by the idea of veggie haggis I had to try it. It was very tasty, barley, red kidney beans, cubed veg piled into a little tower with a fabulous little neep and tattie (potato) cake. The beer pairings were great as well. Relaxing music in the background, no airs or graces, just a general laid back feeling to the place even tho they're trying exciting things with the food. read more

This is one of those places I wish I lived closer to as I think it's the perfect Sunday spot! From the outside this just looks like a normal Irish pub but it's far from it! Not only do they have an extensive alcohol menu with some really good beers and whiskeys, the food is also top notch! It's really well cooked and (again, back to the alcohol) they have beer and whiskey recommendations to accompany each dish on the menu. I've had both the steak and chicken kiev here and while the kiev was amazing, the steak was nothing special. The desserts are really good, but a bit on the expensive side given the size. It's the little touches though that make this place special. The reserved signs on the table are made from scrabble pieces, the menus come in old books and the bills come in old geometry sets with a paper bag of penny jellies to perfectly complete the experience. read more
