Cozy little spot with wonderful service and good eats. My partner and I both enjoyed the tuna melt!

Entering the shop, you will be greeted by loud music. Be ready for that. You will have the option to dine outside, if the weather provides it and the seats are empty. The hosts are wonderful and very accepting with a positive attitude. Smiles and all. I ordered the Jim because it was the only sandwich I could eat. The majority of the sandwiches contain meat, so I would not recommend this for vegans or pescatarians. Jim was delicious and I consumed both halves of Jim flawlessly. Either hunger overruled me, or the sandwich was that satisfying. I do recommend the shop, but with limited options for non-meat eaters, I truthfully would rate Lottie and Zulas, 4.5. Yet, I don't believe the spot was "good."

We also had the Vinny which was fine, a bit spicier than I thought it would be, but I'm a wimp. The service was fine, not overly friendly but adequate. The food is 4 stars, the service 3 starts, but the real bummer was all the plastic. Plastic container, plastic cups and we were eating in. They asked if it was to go and we said no, but everything came in plastic anyway. The ambiance is quintessential Portland, right up until they bring all your food in plastic with plastic silverware to boot.

With the plethora of eats to choose from, a friendly/efficient staff and service, and in or outdoor seating available, Elephants Delicatessen is a spot that's a must visit when you're in this fun city! There are multiple counters for different types of food. There's a sandwich/soup station, a pizza station, a hot foods station (for burgers & specialties), a cold deli station for cold salads/sides, and a bar/barista inside for adult beverages or coffee. Additionally, there's an area to purchase bottled wine and jams/jellies. Grab whatever items you order and pay at the register. If you order from a station, bring your ticket with you as that's where you get charged. Pretty much any type of deli flavor you're looking for, you can find it here. Some of my favorites involve the following: -Teriyaki Chicken Wings -Curried Chickpea Salad -Reuben Sandwich -Tomato Bisque -Corn & Crab Chowder -Broccoli Salad -Turkey and Avocado Sandwich -Pizza Slices (All of them!) I'm sure there's plenty of items I'm missing but those are the ones that stood out to me since I've eaten them multiple times. The staff is very helpful and move efficiently with all the orders flying around. As for seating, there's plenty of seating indoors or you can sit on the patio area outside. Also kid friendly too if you've got the little ones with you. One of Portland's finest eating spots!

We split up and hit the counters that appealed to our hungers. There are so many options here from pizza to burgers to soup and sandwiches. The food was all made to order and we had it pretty quick. My burger was cooked well and the toppings were crisp and fresh. The bun was nice and soft and the fries were a beautiful golden brown. Great food, great service!

The first pizza we ordered was their special -- a sweet corn and chiles, and the other one was the "baller" from their standard menu, a meatball topped red pie. If you enjoy spicy pizza, you'll absolutely love the corn and chiles one. The seeded peppers definitely pack a punch. With the baller pizza, the beef & pork meatballs were well-seasoned and had a nice balance of lean and fatty bits. What I really liked about the pizza here was not just that the combination of flavors worked really well together, but the quality of the crust was fantastic. The crust is rolled out to be super thin, is cooked to be crispy enough that it doesn't flop over when it's folded, and the crust has a wonderful chew to it that doesn't exhaust your jaw as you're working on your second or third slice. In addition to whole pizzas, they also do pizzas by the slice, sandwiches, desserts, beers, and cocktails. This spot really has it all. I cannot recommend Pizza Thief enough -- definitely worth going out of your way to check it out.

So...is this place safe for celiacs? No. They make a LOT of regular flour dough pizza here so there will be a ton of cross contamination. You have been warned. I actively avoid gluten and have not had a problem here. I always order the Meat Sweats on GF crust. You have to sub out the meatballs on this because the meatballs have gluten in it. Service is walk up to the counter and order. You either get your slice right away or they give you a number and you go sit down in anticipation. This place isn't fine dining by any stretch, and it isn't meant to be. It is a casual place to sit, eat, and catch up with friends over a slice or two.

In reality I only can get here 2-3 times a year max bc of my schedule...but when I do have a free day the BM always is at the top of my mind to visit. Ordering is done via kiosk and the menu is laid out well with pictures. The menu is on the smaller side than other sandwich shops but that is actually a selling point here for me since the focus is on the bread. The bread is by far the best sandwich bread I've ever had...the Dutch Crunch is fantastic here as well as their seasonal options. Meats are solid and all from Boar's Head, but what gets me really excited about this place is their chocolate chip cookie. I'm not a cookie person, and I'm definitely not a chocolate chip cookie person, but I feel like I have to get one everytime I come here, it is that good. Lots of places do sandwiches well, lots of places do cookies well, but how many places do both exceptionally well? This place does for sure. In fact their cookie is so good it sells out some of the times I eat here which is tragic bc I seldom get to eat here.
