Third time is a charm? (See my previous post) Wife and I cannot find steak tacos as good as L. Patron. The type of meat they use is different from most taquerias. Things have changed! [[HIGHLIGHT]]Dining area remodeled. Looks nice but less seating?[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Upon entry told to take a seat in updated dining area or at bar like area for singles. Sat in dining area. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Was a little chilly but HVAC system looks new and works![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Not many patrons at this time I'm sure the temps evens out as more people fill the spot. Provided menus to order. The signage that was next to the register has been replaced by the bar seating area. Highly disappointed that they no longer serve Pico or Elotes! So sad. I ordered 3 steak tacos and wife had some steak tacos and one chicken taco. Chicken can come marinated or regular. Also ordered chips and salsa. That was still good. They have the best homemade chips!!! Seriously really good. Salsa on point. Also had rice and beans. Wife had horchata and me a can of coke. Wife was not a fan of the marinated chicken taco. Steak tacos were still on point. Total bill was $63! Then we were charged a 4% credit card processing fee. I used to work for Visa Mastercard. This was an illegal practice a while back. Now I guess it is a legal practice, but I still think it is unethical. There are fees for vendors to use Visa Mastercard. Those surcharge fees are an essence paying the restaurant fee to Visa/Mastercard. In summary, food still tastes good, menu reduced, prices high. I was looking for this place to captivate me again and make it my number one Taqueria. The search still continues.

The $30 large taco, what a joke even the box is still bigger. They added more onions to cover the fact that not all the meat was there.

Tried this place for the first time all because of tik tok, the massive taco they were advertising drew my attention, ordered it and was price shocked. Did the tik tok advertisement get over their heads. $30 for a large taco ? Ridiculous, had a good taste, but come on $30 for a large taco? Skirt steak is $7.99 a pound at Tony's. That's stupidly overpriced! This was a once and done experience. There are way too many Mexican restaurants that are good. I will have to make a tik tok video with the price so people that refuse to pay that waste their time. I would much rather spent that on a nice plate of food rather than one large taco.

Wow - my last review for L' Patron was six years ago. Part of the reason is we live in the suburbs and used to go to L' Patron when our son lived around the corner. He moved some time ago but just moved back into the area. So, we went over the weekend. L' Patron was always cash only. The last time we were there was during COVID when they did accept cards. They are back to cash only now. (With credit card charges, I don't blame them.) They offer counter service and have a pretty extensive menu. There were only two of us. I ordered two tacos - Al Pastor and Carne Asada. My partner ordered the Gringo. We also had an order of guacamole. Everything was fantastic. The tacos are a little on the small side, but they taste great. Their Al Pastor is probably the best I've had anywhere. And, while some Mexican restaurants are using premade guacamole, not here. It was freshly made - and so were the tortilla chips. All in all, my opinion - L' Patron is one of the better fast casual Mexican restaurants in Chicago.

I've been going to l'patron since they first opened on diversey and California. This time I brought a friend in from out of town and everything was tasty and flavorful. I got tacos and he had the gringo and a burrito. The veggie taco is my go to and it didn't disappoint this time.

Ask the Community - L' Patron Tacos

    Do they accept debit/credit cards?

Don't bank on it. Bring cash.

    Is it byob?

They have a bar now so I don't expect they are BYOB.

Is this New Mexican like from New Mexico? Or just Mexican that's not old?

    Traditional

I am convinced that the cut of meat used for the steak burrito has changed and is a lesser quality than previously used? Thoughts?

Naw, but If so it's still better than 98% of all other skirt steakers

Will LPatron go back to its original location? What's their food trunk doing right in front of their old place with the door of the restaurant opened?

They moved and it's my understanding they won't go back to the old location. I believe it was a rent cost hike that pushed them out. If the owners of the building haven't leased the space out yet, L'Patron is probably just trying to remain in…

    Is it BYOB?

    Yes, it is.

I was craving a shrimp burrito so I decided to come here. I have walked past this place many times…read morebut never tried it. I stopped by with my pup to order shrimp burrito to go. Evelyn greeted us right away and placed my order. I asked for spicy salsa so she recommended the gobernador salsa which was a green spicy salsa made with poblanos. Evelyn was so sweet! She gave my puppy a treat and also brought out a bowl of water for him while we waited for the food. The inside of the restaurant was really cute and colorful and they had a separate bar area for drinks. I decided to order a spicy michelada with Pacifico beer while waiting. The bartender was super nice and made my drink quickly. It was the perfect amount of spice and was so refreshing! My burrito came out quick for how packed the inside of the restaurant was. The burrito was a good size and was so fresh and tasty! The gobernador salsa was delicious. I can't wait to go back and try something different and this time dine in.

I had the Mexican street corn to start and then the lunch special with two tacos, rice, and beans. I got the carne asada and crispy fish taco. The carne asada is simple with just steak and onions, but so good! The sauce and the cabbage on the crispy fish taco is really good too. I usually don't love a corn tortilla, but these tacos were so flavorful that the corn tortilla was perfect.I also had the watermelon agua fresca, and it was refreshing and not too sweet. One of the staff members, Chris, was such a vibe. He greeted us friendly and professional as soon as we walked and came over later to check on us, and chatted with me and my aunt. Our waitress was amazing too, and several other staff members stopped by to check on us throughout our meal. Exceptional service like this can be hard to find so I really appreciated it. For me, it's a 5 out of 5 because the food and the service are equally great. I highly recommend! I forgot to take pictures but take my word for it lol.
