I love La Bahia, it's my favorite Mexican place in all of Champaign-Urbana! I've been back so many times and every time I get the "La Bahia", it's generous portion, delicious, and you can eat with alone or with a tortilla. We also got a fried fish dish twice, on the pricier end but also very tasty. I'm surprised by how much I like the green pasta side. Have been there twice this year. The first time was not bad but the second time was kind of disappointing. The worst thing was that I found someone's hair on my table. Not sure whether they had cleaned the table careful enough. I ordered breakfast tacos and enchiladas, with chicken and mole sauce. The tacos, which were stuffed with lots of freshly cooked egg and potatoes, tasted good. However , for the enchilada plate, the mole sauce was too sweet for me and the flavor of the shredded cheese just didn't combine well with the enchiladas. Maybe it would be better if they melt the cheese with the sauce? So I think the restaurant was not bad but still needs improvement. I have also heard that the seafood there was nice, so I may try it later. read more

One of my favorite restaurants in Champaign: Solid breakfast options, their breakfast burrito has better cooked and better seasoned potatoes than many actual breakfast joints. A very different twist of flavors from this coastal mexican restaurant. The Agua Fresca were phenomenal and we were able to try each one before we settled on the limon and the horchata. I had the torta Gabby and as other reviewers stated the complexity of flavors made this torta unique and had tons of umami. The wife had the chipotle and crema chicken, she doesn't like spicy foods but found this dish very fresh and not too spicy. Overall this restaurant is very fresh and light. My boyfriend and I were unfortunately pretty disappointed with our dinner here. We started off with chips and salsa, but unfortunately the salsa tasted like tomato sauce with a hint of cilantro and onion. No spice at all. It was by far the most flavorless salsa I've ever had :( I ordered vegetarian fajitas, which came with 2 sides. I got beans and rice. Fajitas are usually my go-to at Mexican restaurants, and I was surprised that I truly just got rice and beans on the side- no lettuce, no pico, no cheese, no sour cream. Typically, those things come with fajitas. The price was quite high for a few corn tortillas, beans, rice, and some vegetables. Anyway, the rice and beans were fine- nothing special. The fajita vegetables were incredibly salty and I couldn't finish them. I'm a person that usually adds salt to my food, so that's saying a lot. My boyfriend got a burrito with mole. He said it was okay, but the mole was very sweet. Also, the waitress was visibly annoyed that we asked to sit outside. She just generally seemed irritated with us, but I know waitressing is exhausting and she did fine overall. I'm sad to say we won't be back- we were hoping we'd like it since we live close by. read more

Hands down the worst fajitas I have ever had. I ordered carry out with decently high expectations based on the reviews and the pictures. Went and picked it up and came home. When I got home and opened the bag, the ceviche I ordered leaked all over everything and made a huge mess. This annoyed me but I cleaned up my counter and moved on. Then I started to eat. Ceviche was pretty good, fajitas were horrible. I ordered the fajita special (steak, chicken and shrimp) there was no shrimp and the steak and chicken were as tough as leather. Plus they don't give you lettuce and sour cream with the order. Huge waste of money and there are far better options in town that are less expensive. read more

La Bahía Grill is a unique and charming addition to the Downtown restaurant scene. The space is bright, colorful and inviting, the staff genuinely warm, friendly and attentive. They invited our questions about the many menu options and happily provided answers. Our entrees arrived in a timely fashion and both the Salmon al gusto (salmon) and Huachinango al gusto (red snapper) were beautifully presented and perfectly prepared. As we complemented the staff and thanked them for a wonderful experience, we discovered that we were talking to one of the owners. With great enthusiasm, she shared with us her desire to bring a unique restaurant experience to the area. I concur that she has succeeded in doing just that. Had the half Korita for lunch, bay scallops, sea scallops, 40 count shrimp, 15 count boiled shrimp, head on cucharachas, mussels and fish?. All served in a volcano bowl comes to table bubbling in complex spicy sauce. Side of rice EXCELLENT. All seafood handled the heat except fish got mushy. Loved dipping seafood into sauce. I hate to do this, but this was probably the worst Mexican restaurant I've ever been to. To begin with, the margarita on the rocks tasted like margarita mix with no tequila. So then we tried the frozen margs. Better, but still can't taste the tequila. More like a smoothie. We ordered carne asada tacos, but there was hardly any meat on the tacos. This place is great! Costal focused mexican food. Lots of seafood options along with other classic mexican choices. We had fish tacos, shrimp tacos, ceviche, and a quesadilla. Will definitely go back to try some of the more specialty seafood dishes (Korita caught my eye). Sides with the entrees were well seasoned and tasty as well. Everything tasted great!
