There was no wait, the food was served quickly and hot, they even give you warm nacho chips and salsas to snack on while you wait for your meal!! Though i am not as famous as the couple (Elizabeth Taylor and Larry Fortensky) photographed in the 90's sitting at a wall table here: I still adore La Cabanita. In fact as a major Elizabeth Taylor fan i was sitting at the table that she and her then hubbie, Larry Fortensky sat. I had been having a hankering for some of La Caba's patented Tex Mex Nachos and a bowl of their excellent Chicken Soup (Caldo de Pollo) so i landed here this morning in preparation for the extreme heat that is purported to land in Los Angeles today. There is plenty of parking at the back of the restaurant (in the shade) at about 930 am and just a few die-hard Caba Breakfasters here. As is the norm , there are plenty of waiters to take care of our needs: all of them happy to serve. These are the kind of servers that i like: people who take their jobs to a professional level and work their tables as such. I ordered a delicious, malty, dark, cherry, nutty "Bohemia" and with it came the thick, crisp, fresh chips of which this joint is famous. Along with these we get 2 dipping salsas: tomatillo based and a red: both are mild. I asked and received a bowl of Hot salsa which upped the ante, spicy-wise. I also ordered a bowl of Caba's Caldo de Pollo and a plate of their famous Tex-Mex-style Nachos (see the photo for the style of the preparation) It's very unusual: a style that of Texas (San Antonio for example) i have never seen. These Nachos come with Cheddar though you can ask for White. Yellow or White Cheese with beans or Meat or without: these Nachos are the best that i have ever tasted anywhere though there are certainly places that serve mountains of Nachos though taste-wise do not come near the unctuousness of these. Yum. Good Stuff. The Caldo de Pollo today was a bit below par: as if i had gotten the bottom of the huge pot bubbling in the back. But it is still full of real chicken broth flavor with lots of shredded chicken and huge accoutrements as in Avocado slices and chopped onion, potatoes and zucchini. Great service and the food was very good. The carnitas were nicely fried and not too fatty unlike other places. Their beans were sooooo good. They had bacon and other spices in them and they were some of the best beans I've ever had. The others in my party were also happy with their choices, including the breakfast bocaditos which were different from what we had previously but also tasty. Wonderfully cute, with brightly colored walls, beautiful sombreros on the walls, small pinatas hanging from the ceiling. Friendly staff and the best mild green salsa and smoky red salsa for the table with freshly fried chips. The scrambled eggs and chorizo wasn't my favorite and the black beans were thinly spread over half the large plate. The coffee came with a small slice of cinnamon pastry which was delicious. Let me start by saying that I've been coming here for over 15 years... been a loyal customer making the drive from the west valley and now from DTLA when there are literally thousands of other Mexican food/restaurant options. We got take out during the pandemic at least 1-2 times a week to show our support. So I'm still a little salty at the visit we recently had where we were treated so rudely by our server. We dined in around 7:30pm, were seated at the tiniest table in the back room that was on a "hill" and was wobbling like crazy. Once a larger table next to us opened up, I asked if it would be ok to move and our server rolled his eyes and said yes. We made the move ourselves with zero assistance from him. The food was amazing (as always) and we ordered another round of margaritas. Never were we told it was last call or that they were closing soon. Apparently they close at 9pm. At 9:10pm (only a few minutes after our drinks were dropped on the table, along with the check), our server literally came to our table and said in the most condescending voice, "OK, it's time to go home now." My bf and I looked at each other in a state of disbelief. As a restaurant manager myself, I would never, ever say that to a guest. And did he want us to slam our full margaritas and get behind the wheel of a car? Completely unacceptable behavior. I woke up the next morning still thinking about it, so I called and spoke to the manager. He was deeply apologetic and mortified and said he'd have the owner/GM give me a call. It's been over a month and I have yet to receive a call which tells me that the owner doesn't care about how her guests are treated at her establishment. Very, very disappointed. read more

I love the Sopes here and the Sopes I just picked up (to-go only during the coronavirus pandemic) were just as good as they always are! I ordered the Sopes Compuestos (three sopes topped with chicken, chorizo and picadillo); the toppings were rich and delicous. What's a sope? La Cabañita has quickly become a staple in my household. My first meal after birth was La cabañitas Caldo de Pollo. (that was also my first time trying La cabañita) I quickly became a fan as the taste was so homey, authentic, and delicious! Moving to Glendale from LA, it was extremely hard finding a good authentic Mexican restaurant until we tried La Cabañita, and now we have it once or twice a month. My family's new go-to Mexi-Cali spot in La Crescenta-Montrose area (hyphens galore!). This restaurant has got the Mexican decor spot on with the colorful walls, vibrant sombreros, festive flags, and a gigantic cactus next to the restroom door. It really transports you to Mexico, and I love everything about it. My dad always get the Dos Equis lager here (so bomb) and he drinks it while admiring the blue and gold sombrero because he has an identical one in his sombrero collection at home. I've been here twice and got the carnitas a la cabanita twice. It's so good!! Not your traditional shredded carnitas. They take lean pork and fry it. Comes with rice, savory beans, salad, guacamole/salsa, and the best homemade tortillas. Also every table gets a bowl of chips and two different salsas with unlimited refills. Each plate goes for about $12-18. I usually expect to pay a little over 20 a head after taxes/tip. Prices are steep but portions are generous and food is delicioso. Parking is limited to street or the small lot in front of Schreiner's. It gets poppin around 5pm. Expect to wait if you go any time after 5:30pm. Space is definitely accommodating for large parties or an intimate date. It can get loud because the space is tight, and the restaurant is almost always full. Service is fantastic. Everyone is always super nice and accommodating. My favorite part of this restaurant is the "mi casa es is casa" sign outside the entrance door. I ventured out of my comfort zone to try the three chiles...one traditional with cheese, one vegetable, and one with chicken. Each one was great and had their own sauce. This restaurant used to be the best place for Mexican food in this neighborhood. That meant a lot because the majority of the restaurants here suck. Since the last time I ate here the overall quality has gone down. The Caldo De Pollo (Chicken Soup) was probably the best chicken soup I've had the first time I tried it, but during my recent visit it tasted so incredibly bland it makes me want to never order it again. The Puerco En Salsa Verde (Pork chunks in green sauce) still tasted nice and tangy, but it seemed like they significantly cut down the size of the portions and on top of that, the prices for it and some of their entrées went up to the 20s. The Puerco costing $23. It's a tasty meal, but for $23 that's a hard sell. At its current state I don't think I'll come here again. read more

Went for lunch at this place. I'll say the food is good. I had the soup lunch special. The value for lunch is would say is very good. On the menu, it says it includes a soda, but it also includes other drinks. Just ask, and they'll tell you. I would recommend this place. A couple of notes that I think they could work on are greeting you when you arrive. We walked in, and one guy just looked at us and continued doing whatever he was doing. There's a tablet to check in to be seated as you walk in. We put our name down and saw we were second in line. So we waited outside, thinking it shouldn't take long. As we're sitting outside, we see other people just walk in and get seated. So we go in and ask when we could be seated. The same guy from earlier looks confused and tells us we can sit at any table. We sit down order and have our lunch. I kid you not our name was still on the wait list even after we left. If they fix that little problem it would be just fine. read more

I came here on a Sunday afternoon because I was craving Mexican food. It seems like a great staple for the locals around. The service wasn't as bad as has been posted in the reviews, but they do not check for vaccinations cards or really space out tables when it gets busy. The works are all wearing masks and gloves though. The chips and salsa are bomb! We got the chicken tostados and the carne aside tacos plate. Overall for the carne aside tacos I would have to say that it was mediocre 2.5/5 unfortunately. The meat itself was a bit tough and the flavor was a bit lacking. The chicken tostados were better overall especially with the salsa but I think comparatively to other Mexican joints in LA it's average. Will be back to try other things on the menu still have hopes for this place read more

Still a favorite! Last review was 2013 so happy to report they survived Covid shutdown and the increase in prices (like everywhere) is evident. It is still worth every penny! Our go to for Breakfast are the Huevos Divorciados that come with chilaquiles-YUM!!! Lunch or Dinner is still Chicken Enchiladas or sopes or yes, their chicken soup!! its all good! I have noticed the cook might have changed, some things are slightly different but still loyal to this place!! read more
