Solid Mexican joint in La Canada. Private parking lot. Old school, family owned venue. I ordered online on their website (small convenience fee). Was relatively busy on a Saturday night but not overly so. Food order was accurate, well packaged for takeout, and fresh. Enchiladas were solid, and I loved how the burritos came covered in enchilada sauce. Chips and salsa included for no additional charge. Friendly staff who knew the locals. It was good, but when the chips are salsa steal the show, you know there are better options out on the streets. While the dishes are tasty, it's worth noting that the overall value might not be the most competitive in the area. Met with friends from La Canada who suggested Dona Maria for convenient parking. Frankly from the outside, I thought hmmm...we could have gone somewhere else. Boy, was I wrong, the old adage, "Don't judge a book by its cover" applied here. Here are some helpful tips and info: 1. Parking - have their own private lot so again, a rarity these days but helps a ton for ingress and egress and when pressed for time. Who has time to look for parking during lunch time or anytime? Guess you can tell that is my number one pet peeve. 2. Food - lenten season so no meat Fridays; thus, all three ended up ordering chile relleno with a side of rice and beans. One of the best chile relleno I have had and the portion was perfect! M NOTE: As usual, we were served fresh tortillas and salsa. One distinct thing served was the pickled veggies - love! 3. Service - found out my friends where regulars here so the waiter knew them and suffice it to say, impeccable service. Needless to say, I heard him talking to the other customers the same way he did for us so I know whether you come as a regular or not, you will like it here. Mild temperature and proximity to my location made me think what would be better than a chimichanga on a day like this. So Donna Marie I came into the picture through a quick search and lo and behold the not so easy online ordering menu and a phone call later I picked up my "burrito" Choosing chicken expecting us season deep fried chicken chimichanga. I open the box to reveal something totally different. So maybe my English as a second language, or my Spanish is a second language, or my understanding of what a chimichanga chicken is, a second language. Apparently what I call a burrito con pollo ajogada verde is the same as a pollo chimichanga. Green sauce in Spanish must be deep fried in english. So next time I'm ordering a wet green salsa burrito to see if I get my deep fried chicken burrito. Or maybe throw a frozen Tina Maria in my deep frier and just be done with it. And remind myself low expectation lead to pleasant surprises. read more

Cute little spot in La Canada. Food is pretty good and prices are reasonable. I ordered the beef taquitos plate which came with 4 taquitos, rice and beans. The beef taquitos were nice and crispy. Moments after walking in to this old line Mexican restaurant, as we sat at a table and looked around, we seriously considered leaving. To call the decor dated, stale, and uninspired starts to tell the story. The whole approach is very laid back. We were invited to seat ourselves wherever we wanted. Then we waited for about five minutes for something to happen next. A man came to offer us drinks. He brought menus and setups. We had a few menu questions, which he answered. Then a basket of warm chips came, along with a very basic salsa, plus a side plate of pickled veggies. The chips being heated was a nice touch. A different man came to take our order. Dear Hubby chose a chorizo and huevos burrito, which turned out to be huge. Our nephew picked an enchilada plate with just rice. I went for a tostada with pulled pork. Fortunately, the food was very tasty. The seasonings in my tostada brought out the flavors well. The lettuce was crispy fresh. I would have preferred black beans to pinto beans, but they don't offer them. Also, the dab of sour cream that came on the dish was too small. Some diced tomatoes would have been a welcome addition. The guys devoured their meals. I took half of mine home for lunch the next day. The bill was very modest, which is always a good thing. I could see this as a spot for takeout if you lived in the area. As a dine-in place, I found the decor depressing. It could use some serious sprucing up. read more

We were in the area and hungry and craving Mexican food. We found this little spot and we were a bit skeptical because when we walked in it was empty. Only a couple were eating at a table. Customer service was great. We were greeted as soon as we walked in. They took chips and salsa to the table while we looked over at the menu. The place itself feels small. In moments I felt a little claustrophobic. My wife and I both ordered the carnitas plate which came with rice, beans, pico de gallo, sour cream and guacamole the food was great except the rice. The rice felt old or as if they cooked it twice. A little hard I would say. We also ordered a Jamaica drink which was good and refreshing. It didn't feel like it was made fresh from the hibiscus. But it was still good tasting. There inside walls felt a bit outdated. There was a TV for entertainment but it only had a Roku logo on it. Love me some mole.. There aren't too many Mexican restaurants in the area and the ones that are around are mostly Americanized. Dona Maria is one of the better Mexican restaurants in the Glendale Highlands / La Canada area. Been craving mole for some time. The mole poblano here is pretty good. It has a light to mild spice and sweet chocolate sauce over chunks of dark and white chicken meat. I liked how they served the chicken in chunks to get the sauces all over the chicken. It was served with rice, refried beans and corn tortillas. I was a happy camper. Service here was very good and friendly. The burrito and chile relleno with chicken were pretty good too. read more

So much so that I didn't come back until years later when the salon I worked at would do group orders from this place.. It was then I realized.. this place hit my palate on 2 things.. their crispy beef tacos, and their hot salsa. They haven't been open for years but every time I come.. I got take out and their vegetables in the pork verde were like canned green beans and everything tasted out of a can.
