After attending the Rose Parade we wanted to eat some good Mexican food, so we searched and found La Cabañita which caught our attention, we drove over and we were not disappointed at all, first we had the Taquitos de papas as appetizers, they were delicious, then we ordered margaritas and they were perfect as well, we also ordered Mole verde with pork which was great, we had a great time, the only reason I didn't give 5 starts is because of a small delay in our meal, but other than that, everything was perfect, we will definitely go back. read more

It's a cute and intimate restaurant down the street from the Montrose shopping strip. I recommend their Nachos and Chuletas en Chile Pasilla. Just make sure not to fill up on the chips and salsa before your meal because their salsa is very delicious and addicting. Especially the darker salsa.... I have dreams about that salsa! They also provide really tasty homemade tortillas! Everyone who works here is very nice and I've never had a bad experience. We had gone for a Hike with my girl and on our way down verdugo saw La Cabanita and decided to try it. I ordered the Tacos a la Cochinita with extra onions on the side and my girl ordered tacos con potato. These two plates were amazingly delicious! For the price and quality it's a great deal for your pocket and most importantly, your belly I had recommended to my friends and it didn't disappoint at all. We (my husband and I) wanted to try a new place. It took me a very long time to decide where. At last! La Cabanita popped up with great reviews. So I decided we should try it out! This location is super adorable and vibrant. I loved the decor inside the restaurant... it's so LIVELY. I went around lunch time which was not that busy, but I am not complaining. They helped us right away! What blew my mind is the fact that the food came within a few minutes after we ordered. It was all around a wonderful experience. I've been visiting La Cabanita since I was a kid, and never once been disappointed. Like everyone else says, it's an elevated version of authentic Mexican cuisine. The best mole sauce ever, but even if that's not your thing all their sauces are fantastic. I usually alternate between a combination of their tacos, chicken and cheese mole enchilades, and the chiles marineros. (A warning about delivery- I'd use their website rather than uber eats. For some reason uber eats drivers love to accept orders here and then sit on them for hours. And reheating food from this place in the microwave is just a shame, it deserves better.) read more

Been here two times ordered delivery twice.The First time a friend instead I try the Mole here, really watery mole. The second time my friend said I had to.give them another try, and I LOVE mexican food. ( especially the good old fashioned kind grandma made) but this is Literally the worst Mexican food I have ever had in my life. Today I Ordered the enchilada ranchera plate. First i opened the box and it smells so bad! Wish they had warned me about the cotija. Then after I scraped all that off I tried the ranchera sauce, it's just watery tomato juice with some pepper so gross. Also really bland beans and rice. Giving it five stars. I almost never do... it's not a perfect place, but they are a perfect neighborhood place. The chipotle in dishes will surprise you. I don't order the omelette EVER. I ordered theirs cos it had their chipotle recipe and I CONSUMED it fully except for the few bites I had to share to make other converts... ...their albondigas are so unique. Not in a soup. Egg in the middle. They sit in a delicious SPICY chipotle sauce. Everything I have eaten here is either good or delicious. Also, true Latinos and legit Mexicanos eat here as well. First dine-in experience at La Cabañita was truly awful. Used the Yelp sign in at the front to get on the wait list. It said wait was 12-23 minutes, but we weren't seated for almost 45 minutes. We got seated in the banquet hall in the back, which smelled like the soapy water you soak a mop in. I can't understand how the delay was related to reduced capacity when were seated next to the loudest table of 3 sloppy drunk adults and 4 children whose insanely loud voices echoed mercilessly throughout that smelly room. The cucumber spicy margarita was so sweet it was not drinkable without adding a bunch of raw jalapeños to it. The house margarita was watered down beyond belief. The 2 stars are for: (1) good food, (2) timely service once seated, but the whole dining experience was nausea inducing and solidified that this is a good restaurant for food takeout and absolutely nothing else. read more

Best mole enchiladas I have found in the LA area! To-go order was quick and easy, ordered online and had a friendly pickup experience. Highly recommend getting a side of their salsa macha (Mexican chili oil condiment) if you love spice! The rice, beans, chips and salsa were top notch as well. There are many dining areas to La Cabanita so the 'ita' which designates smallness is no longer true. It seems to have grown organically by acquiring other parts of the building it occupies one business at a time. The interior is decorated w/ pre-Columbian replica objets d'art, a large mural depicting what looks like Teotihuacan complex of pyramids w/ native Mexicans before 1500 to the left while the right side depicts a more colonial Mexican village scene w/ the obligatory grandiose basilica which was probably built on the backs of Native Mexican peasants. Throughout the interior to create a festive atmosphere, multi-colored paper cut-out streamers are hung from wall to wall overhead. Azulejos/glazed tiles are here & there, especially on the table tops which makes for an uneven surface so be careful where you lay your drinks. We ordered: 1) "Taco De Rajas Con Crema: Rajas refers to the 'slices' of Poblano chiles that are typically roasted to make the skinning easier, sliced, sautéed with sliced onions, and simmered in Crema Mexicana/sour cream that is similar to a thick version of Crème Fraiche. The combination of the dairy, cream richness of the Crema, the funkiness of the onions, & the green herbal, bell pepper like slight bitterness all creates a subtle complexity. The corn tortilla hecha a mano is thick with a light corn bouquet & starchy sweetness. Spoon the Rajas into a tortilla, fold & eat with the hand. This is elegant "comfort food" at its Mexican best. 2) "Chiles En Nogada: Classically, CenN requires the obligatory pomegranate fruit with its plump, bright red seeds which are in season from about early October to late January. Poblano chile is hollowed out & stuffed w/ Picadillo' which consists of shredded meat, sweet fruits, spices. The crema is milk, double cream, powdered walnuts & is thickened to coat the green Poblano to white. Some herbal leaf like parsley. is discreetly placed to provide the color green. All this is done to imitate the tricolor of the Mexican flag which is green, red, & white. The origin of this dish seems to be from Puebla in central Mexico south of Mexico City. Possibly it was invented by some culinarily creative Monjas/nuns. Since I had the CenN in August, La Cabanita took out the pomegranate seeds, & the green was provided by a pinch of powdered parsley flakes. The Nogada sauce was not white but a dark beige so they piped white crema Mexicana in a zig-zag pattern over the Poblano chile. So in terms of the color scheme, it did not pass muster, but the overall flavour of this CenN w/ its mincemeat-like sweet fruited shredded meat & the rich dairy taste of the Nogada was at once dulcet w/ sweet aromatic spices & unctuous creaminess that was refreshed by the lightly braised Poblano chile w/ its light bitter tone. For a non-conventional Chile en Nogada, they did a good job of "faking it". The black bean frijoles & Mexican rice infused with tomato sauce were acceptable accompaniments, but all these heavy foods along w/ the crema heavy CenN made for an extremely carb heavy, filling meal. There was no side that would have cleared the palate of the heaviness of all the dishes. A nice mixed green salad with a light vinegar/oil dressing would be a good way to clean the tastebuds for a new assault on this dish. 3) "Chiles A La Cabanita: Another take from the Chile en Nogada cladistic family tree. This one is not as carefully constructed and visually not as aesthetic. Actually, it looks like a mess, but I liked the melded flavours better. The force meat was fruity & nutty, & it looks as though the Poblano chile was fried slighty to add a nice softened texture. Crema Mexicana is drizzled around haphazardly. There was the frijoles negros w/ a bit of nice lightly ripe Cotija hard cheese. No rice, but a nice mixed green salad was included to cut & lighten the cloying, sweet minced meat. A kind gesture, the oil vinegar dressing w/ albahaca/oregano was on the side to be used at one's own discretion. 1-3) I ordered the standard Margarita to help down the food. The pairing went well w/ all the foods we had ordered. Later on I realized we had ordered every dish w/ some element of Poblano Chile, but La Cabanita proved it can handle the same ingredients in different ways so that one did not tire of the noble Poblano. This time around the food at La Cabanita was a 4- Yelp stars. It pays to have a friend who has come here before to help guide through the menu since it is possible that not all is good at this Central Mexican eatery. read more

5 stars for the heavenly molé chilaquiles but 3 stars for service = an average of 4 stars. My friend & I met here one morning and I was thinking about chorizo- which I love- but then I read the molé reviews and I'm a big molé fan... The Molé Chilaquiles (I added black beans) was muy delicioso and large enough to take 1/2 home. The molé is dark, sweet, spicy and pretty darned amazing. The service could have been better. The staff was all smiles- when they were around that is. I ordered the coffee, they forgot, and then someone else brought it and it wasn't hot. I also had to ask for more rather than being asked. I will come back, but maybe after hitting the Starbucks or Coffee Bean down the street first... There are certainly other menu items that looked interesting and it's local and this particular friend of mine loves it, so no doubt I'll return. read more

"When are going over there?!" Omg, thank goodness for La Cabanita right across from John Sparr Tavern. When the HH food sucks, it was time for some real food! Once Yelpers Ran C., Isobel L., and I nodded at each other, we made a beeline over there for some yummy Mexican food, and thank goodness again, the AC was blasting up in there too! Parking: We parked along the street on Ocean View Blvd. Two hours free parking and it's free after 6pm. After browsing through the menu, Isobel and I decided to get the $25 Course Meal, which consisted of: Two Entree Items + Soup or Salad + Dessert (Drinks are sold separately). Ran decided to just get a solo, beef dish (forgot the name). Complimentary Salsa and Chips: Served with one mild verde salsa and one brown spicy salsa. Great for munching on while waiting for our food to arrive. For my salad, I decided on Ensalada Cabanita, which consisted of mixed greens, raisins, walnuts, carrots, honey, cheese and Italian Dressing. Presentation wise, it looked beautiful, wholesome and healthy. Taste wise, it was delicious, but way too sweet for me. I ate half of it and couldn't finish the rest. Should I order this again, I'm gonna order the honey and Italian Dressing on the sides. Entree: I went with both Chicken Tamal and Enchilada, poured over mole, which consisted of a sweet and little spicy kick, but I dig it! The chicken tamal was savory and tasty, while the chicken enchilada tasted a bit milder, but still delightful. Served with a generous amount of rice and beans, my tummy was happily getting stuffed. Dessert: I love it! I got the Coconut Flan. It was sweet and the flan texture was creamy, a bit chewy and the coconut flakes tasted great with it. When Ran C. sampled the flan, he was so impressed with it that he even ordered one too! As for Isobel, she got the Ensalada Nopales (cactus) that came with these thick and hearty corn tortillas. I dont recall her two entree items, and for dessert, she got the sopapillas, which are Mexican flatbreads deep fried and mixed with golden brown sugar. I sampled both her salad and sopapillas and they were pretty good. Drinks: We all got iced water. Both Isobel and Ran got these huge and strong margaritas. I got a $3 Horchata drink that was sweet and cool. Just a bummer that it's not refillable, lol! Service: Our male server was nice and attentive. Our food came out in a timely manner and we were able to relax and enjoy our meal while enjoying the cool AC. Though, when it came to the check, there was a $2.00 extra salad charge each for both Isobel and I. Luckily, I took a snapshot of the menu and we got a $6.00 discount off and an apology for their machine putting that error in. Ambience and Decor: We sat in the extended room, which was the second level, just a couple of steps up. Their main dining room is in the bottom level. I liked where we dined, it was cool, relaxing, near the kitchen and the restroom on our side was clean and less foot traffic coming through. As for the decor, yup, it feels like you're in Mexico! Love the sombreros hanging up on the wall, very cute! All you needed were some Mariachis walking and singing to various tables, hehe, ole! Overall, I was very pleased with La Cabanita. I would definitely come here again. Usually, I'm not a fan of Mexican food, but they did a good job here.
