Grilled or fried fish tacos. Different fish. Awesome habanero sauce. Came here for dinner one night and got the fried fish burrito and shrimp tacos. We were given a big plate of guac and chips at no additional charge, which was actually pretty tasty. When does that ever happen? Here the fish tacos are made with different fish of the day. This night happened to be Mahi Mahi. I was unfortunately disappointed with my burrito. The fish was good enough, but it was filled with lettuce. Thats not so bad, as there was no rice or bean filler inside, but it made the whole burrito cold. I was definitely not feelin a cold fish burrito. It didn't have much flavor to it, and my burrito craving was not satisfied. The habanero sauce helped though, adding a good amount of spice without sacrificing flavor. I had a taste of the shrimp tacos, and they were great. The shrimp was cooked perfectly, not overcooked and tough or undercooked and clammy. Perfect. SG has wanted to come for awhile. So we dropped in for a carne asada burrito and a carnitas quesadilla in this little Day of the Dead themed spot. The setting was quaint and the theme was perfect for the setting. Our food was served quickly and we were pleased with the size and style of the burrito and quesadilla. I know, style? Well the quesadilla was very unusal and the burrito was large. The quesadilla was not flat it was deep fried into a folded shape. Yum! Ok, how can you go wrong with a deep fried anything. It is good. So if you have exercised a bunch, venture on in and order this for sure!!! I liked it a lot better than the burrito, but in the spirit of marriage.... we each get half. But, my stomach and my hips will thank me for not gorging on all of it. Overall this place was pretty good and we may even go back. I last went here a few years ago and remember absolutely loving the food. Coming back here I wasn't sure if it would be as good as I remembered. I was in luck however, because it was exactly like I remembered. I ordered a Carne Asada burrito and opted to add cheese. I was a little shocked at the price which was higher than I had expected. I also was surprised that I had to pay extra just to add cheese. Upon getting my burrito I realized it was fairly large and I felt less annoyed about having to pay more than I wanted to originally. These are not bullshit tortillas. I don't know if they're house made or just well sourced but they're rich and toasted just right. Almost a little raw in a couple spots, which means they're hitting it just right. Veggie burritos are often bland, but this one was nicely salted. Beans cooked perfectly and nicely seasoned. We walked in to an empty restaurant save for one couple already 3/4 of the way through their meal. While my buddy took a phone call, I looked up at the menu and remembered the grilled fish taco. I happily approached the order counter. A very bored and seemingly unhappy that I was bothering her (twenty-something) stood up to greet me: "What do you want?" I smiled though noting her pissed off attitude that I was taking her from her cell phone concentration: "I'd like the grilled fish taco!" "That it?" she asked with zero emotion. Still smiling, "Yes." I replied. I handed her a ten as she stated in a bored way, "$5.41". I mentioned that I was fishing for a penny. She stood there with no emotion as I felt my pockets, "Out of this?" she asked? "Well, yes, I said, it's a ten-dollar-bill for a five-dollar-meal." She said in a pissed off way, "Well, you said you were searching for change." I mentioned that I was seeking a penny and then realized that this entire time, this little ass had no desire for me to buy anything nor did she make me feel welcome. I said, "You know what? Give me back the ten. I don't want to eat here. You have ruined my appetite for a taco." My friend had just gotten off the phone and said, "Wait, what? What happened?" I replied, "We don't need to spend money where we are not wanted as customers. Let's go." Truly couldn't be happier we have this local Mexican food spot right by to our house - we seriously eat here once a week it's so yummy. Their carne asada especial taco can't be beat - crispy shell and soft shell full of delicious meat, cheese, guac, and pico de gallo. Their nachos are also excellent and my boyfriend LOVES their carne asada burrito. Seriously good stuff. To top it all off - they have a wide array of homemade, fresh salsas to drench everything with mmmm. In terms of semi-authentic, quality Mexican food spots there really aren't many great ones nearby this neighborhood so we are all about this spot. Like tearing into this poor ear of corn with a mad vengeance trying not to look deranged with cheese and mayo dribbling down your chin as you stare wild-eyed at the other patrons. At some point, you just give in to the kookiness and let the Elote take its course. Embrace your inner lunatic. La Calaca has other things too, shockingly it's not just a corn store. The Baja Pescado taco was as fine as I've had in a while. Golden deep-fried fish served on a bed of cabbage with a garnish of Mexican cream. But at $4.50 it was a bit pricey. The carnitas taco, while tasty was just so-so- heavy on the pinto beans and light on the pork. There is a razor thin line between excellent carnitas and overdone carnitas. La Calaca's carnitas was just south of this imaginary line that only exists in my head. Their fresh out of the fryer tortilla chips were excellent as well. Best ever? No, but all said, La Calaca Loca is the best taqueria within a three mile radius of my house. The only "calaca" that I saw though was the metal one by the counter knocking back a bottle of tequila. Not as much "loca" as "boracha"; though they often go hand-in-hand. Just ask your typical street alkie. Not sure why people are giving this place a one star review for "rudeness." I came here last night and even though we were probably being obnoxious, the lady was very nice. People are talking about better taquerias in the area, but I'm not sure which ones they're referring to--Cholita Linda is great, but it's definitely not a taqueria. Also, the burritos were really good! I had the carnitas. Highly recommend the fresh-fried chips as well, and the horchata was among the best I've ever had! I don't mean to rant too much, but when people complain about service at a TAQUERIA where there is no societal expectation to tip, no service staff, and all interaction with people working there is generally minimal, it really makes my skin crawl when I see all these one star reviews based on one lady who works there.
