Cactus burrito, strawberry agua fresca, horchata
    Sydney J.

I am quite late in writing this review, so I apologize if anything's changed about these dishes since then. I got a cactus burrito, and also drank some horchata and strawberry agua fresca. The cactus burrito was quite large, the cactus was sour and reminded me of pickles. I liked the creaminess. Overall, I thought it was pretty decent as a vegetarian option. It's not super common (in my experience, which may not be representative) to find nopales at taquerias, so I was intrigued that they offer it here. The horchata and strawberry agua fresca were pretty good too, definitely will fulfill your sweet tooth.

Carne Asada (Steak, $5.25), Al Pastor (Marinated Pork, $5.00), Carnitas (Pork, $5.00), and Fish (Tilapia, $5.25) Tacos.

My wife and I took my sister's dog for a walk in Montclair Village and had lunch outside on the pet-friendly sidewalk patio at Taqueria Las Comadres. I thought the food and service were A-OK. I'd come back. This place is fine for quick and convenient tacos, burritos, quesadillas, nachos, and other Mexican food. There are other pet-friendly patios in Montclair such as El Agavero, another Mexican restaurant just up the street, and Crogan's Irish pub, around the corner. Taqueria Las Comadres appealed to us most at the time. This is a small, humble, no-frills, fast-casual restaurant (a hole in the wall) with very limited seating, inside and out. It's more of a takeout joint as opposed to El Agavero, which is a more spacious sit-down restaurant. Taqueria Las Comadres has been around since 1991, according to the laminated paper menu in-store, and 1986, according to their business info on Yelp. I had the following tacos: * Carne Asada ($5.25) - steak * Al Pastor ($5.00) - marinated pork * Carnitas ($5.00) - pork * Fish ($5.25) - tilapia Each taco was served in a double-layer soft corn tortilla. I believe they gave me the option between soft and hard tacos and I chose soft. I don't remember if they gave me the option between corn or flour tortillas, but I usually pick corn. I had pico de gallo (salsa) served on the steak and both pork tacos. The salsa was fresh and delicious. However, the meat quality was OK at best; not the best flavor or texture. That said, the tacos were big and filling and they certainly satiated my hunger. The fish taco was underwhelming. It just wasn't as good as most other fish tacos I've had. Also, the meat tacos were quite watery and runny. It didn't take long for them to break apart, so eating them was messy. We got some other salsas and condiments from the salsa bar and I also picked up a bottle of water ($1.75) from one of the self-serve fridges in front of the counter. The fridges also had Jarritos Mexican soda in assorted flavors and Mexican Coke, which is sweetened with white sugar instead of high-fructose corn syrup like American Coke. Service was efficient. Taqueria Las Comadres uses Square for payment processing, which means automatic email receipts for me. Check out Taqueria Las Comadres on Instagram @taquerialascomadres_oakland https://www.instagram.com/taquerialascomadres_oakland/ On February 24, 2022, they posted pictures of Klay Thompson's visit. Cool.

This taqueria has a nice flow of customers with quick preparation of items when ordered. Choice of tortillas are available like spinach, and of course standard. All the classic meats like Al Pastor, Carnitas, steak, and chicken. Beans like black, pinto, and refried. And mild Pico de gallo, guacamole, and sour cream are added to a super burrito. So how was it? Lackluster burrito. Nothing stood out or makes me want to come back. In fact the burrito is pequeno. When it comes to burritos, sizes matters. Especially if I'm paying $15 per burrito, I shouldn't be able to down two super burritos. But I did. The employees are all nice and I was in and out in less than five minutes. But there's too many better burritos being served in that price range for me to return.

Grease pooling in the foil after saturating every bit of the tortilla.

At its best, this spot is average. Unfortunately for my family, tonight it wasn't even that. Two of our three burritos were inedible greasy. The meat, Al pastor, tasted not fresh. It almost seemed like they were trying to resuscitate older meat with obscene amounts of oil. So two burritos went into the compost, and I had to make two new meals. Great.

What an underrated amazing Taqueria. They put so much heart into their meats Chili Colorado, Carne Asada, Pollo Asado, Chile Verde, they are all so tasty. If you are in the neighborhood, check out this hole in the wall Taqueria. You will love it!

Excellent quick stop for your burrito craving. They tend to be fast and the burritos are on the larger side. The orange salsa is to die for.

The menudo was completely bland and tasted like it came straight out of a can definitely not fresh and absolutely not worth ordering. The chips and guacamole were just "okay," but even that's being generous since the chips were clearly old and stale. The steak nachos were the final straw. They were straight-up gross. I ordered steak nachos and somehow got nachos covered in rice, barely any meat (if any at all), and a laughably small portion for the price. On top of that, they were made with the same stale chips. For what they charge, this level of food quality is unacceptable. I won't be coming back. The server was rude and short didn't care to answer any questions. Sinceramente me molesta haber gastado dinero aquí. No regresaré.

The 4 stars is really because although the food looks pretty, I would say everything tastes okay, nothing really stood out particularly in taste. If this review was based on food tastes alone, and not looks, vibes, and the great show, it would've been 3 stars. The flautas were a bit too hard for me. Ive had way better flautas at El Torito's in San Leandro. Although there were only like 6 of us total in the audience for the show, it was still really enjoyable. The host, Tony Parker has great energy, and a lot of the comics (I think were like 5 or 6) had us laughing throughout. No one was safe lol. All in all, a really cute place for date night and comedy show. Apparently they have them Sunday-Thursday nights, and they're free!

We ordered the duck carnitas, summer tamales, and kids' quesadilla, along with the roasted beats and a strawberry agua fresca and horchata. I cannot enumerate all of the amazing elements and flavors in this meal, but I can say that the crispy outside of the duck and the ease with which it fell apart drew a connection between duck confit and carnitas that changed the way I will think about both. The hearty masa in the tamales had a the texture of hand ground corn and was substantial enough to warrant chewing though. The beet -- tender and flavorful in itself -- was paired with a nutty, spicy mole like a thick paste, bright with its herbs. The agua fresca was a summertime blast of fruit. Yes, yes. All of the food is delicious and amazing. But what takes the restaurant over the top is that the food is comforting and familiar in equal measure to its inventiveness and flawless execution. The prices on the menu are $5-10 more than the menu on their website. It's a nice dining room, but very loud and the piped-in music makes it worse: I couldn't hear what my date was saying across the table. We started with the smoked trout tostadas. This is kind of ceviche style, and they were delicious. These are "street taco" sized tostadas by the way. The portion was OK but for $20 it could've been a bit more substantial. The duck mole: the duck was nicely unctuous and cooked amazingly, but very salty. The mole had the consistency and taste of hummus. Needless to say it was thick, gloopy and tasted only of cumin. The little salad on the plate was plastered in it. The grilled swordfish Valencia style was just an overly sour salsa verde with a couple chopped green olives with the fish sitting in the watery liquid. The salsa had a kick, but tasted mostly of lime, it was also cold. The swordfish however was grilled perfectly and the portion was great--for $35 I'm glad it was. Beans and rice seemed an overly salty afterthought, and if you don't want beans, too bad, it's served in the same bowl as the rice. The service was almost non-existent--no one checked in on us or asked how things were; there seemed to be only one person taking orders in the dining room and three-four people running around. Our appetizer plates sat in front of us for 15 mins, so when the entrees arrived the runner had a hard time clearing the table and simultaneously putting down the entrees. We didn't see our server again until the end when she gave us the check. Suddenly the charm came on when the tip came up. I appreciate what they're doing, but for that price point there are far better options.
