I am quite late in writing this review, so I apologize if anything's changed about these dishes since then. I got a cactus burrito, and also drank some horchata and strawberry agua fresca. The cactus burrito was quite large, the cactus was sour and reminded me of pickles. I liked the creaminess. Overall, I thought it was pretty decent as a vegetarian option. It's not super common (in my experience, which may not be representative) to find nopales at taquerias, so I was intrigued that they offer it here. My wife and I took my sister's dog for a walk in Montclair Village and had lunch outside on the pet-friendly sidewalk patio at Taqueria Las Comadres. I thought the food and service were A-OK. I'd come back. This place is fine for quick and convenient tacos, burritos, quesadillas, nachos, and other Mexican food. There are other pet-friendly patios in Montclair such as El Agavero, another Mexican restaurant just up the street, and Crogan's Irish pub, around the corner. Taqueria Las Comadres appealed to us most at the time. This is a small, humble, no-frills, fast-casual restaurant (a hole in the wall) with very limited seating, inside and out. It's more of a takeout joint as opposed to El Agavero, which is a more spacious sit-down restaurant. Taqueria Las Comadres has been around since 1991, according to the laminated paper menu in-store, and 1986, according to their business info on Yelp. I had the following tacos: * Carne Asada ($5.25) - steak * Al Pastor ($5.00) - marinated pork * Carnitas ($5.00) - pork * Fish ($5.25) - tilapia Each taco was served in a double-layer soft corn tortilla. I believe they gave me the option between soft and hard tacos and I chose soft. I don't remember if they gave me the option between corn or flour tortillas, but I usually pick corn. I had pico de gallo (salsa) served on the steak and both pork tacos. The salsa was fresh and delicious. However, the meat quality was OK at best; not the best flavor or texture. That said, the tacos were big and filling and they certainly satiated my hunger. The fish taco was underwhelming. It just wasn't as good as most other fish tacos I've had. Also, the meat tacos were quite watery and runny. It didn't take long for them to break apart, so eating them was messy. We got some other salsas and condiments from the salsa bar and I also picked up a bottle of water ($1.75) from one of the self-serve fridges in front of the counter. The fridges also had Jarritos Mexican soda in assorted flavors and Mexican Coke, which is sweetened with white sugar instead of high-fructose corn syrup like American Coke. Service was efficient. We had the carnitas super burrito and really wanted to like this place but the carnitas was SO TOUGH and DRY. I couldn't even chew or swallow the meat. It tasted like it's been sitting under a heat lamp for too long. Pro is that there are lots of salsas to choose from and they are pretty tasty. Convenient little shop in a cute area. I recently got a chicken super burrito to-go and I also ordered burritos for three friends. Despite a bit of a line, I was able to get my order quickly. The store is small and has little indoor seating; you will want to get your order to go or for delivery if you go here. I liked my burrito; good size, great price, lots of chicken, and great flavor. This taqueria has a nice flow of customers with quick preparation of items when ordered. Choice of tortillas are available like spinach, and of course standard. All the classic meats like Al Pastor, Carnitas, steak, and chicken. Beans like black, pinto, and refried. And mild Pico de gallo, guacamole, and sour cream are added to a super burrito. So how was it? Lackluster burrito. Nothing stood out or makes me want to come back. In fact the burrito is pequeno. When it comes to burritos, sizes matters. Especially if I'm paying $15 per burrito, I shouldn't be able to down two super burritos. But I did. The employees are all nice and I was in and out in less than five minutes. I returned to Taqueria Las Comadres for Lunch last Thursday. I was in town for a meeting that started at 1 PM and after a long drive from Genoa NV, I needed something to eat. Taqueria Las Comadres remains a small "hole in the wall" (if you can say that in Montclair) Mexican joint, that still serves really good food, both fast and plentiful. At its best, this spot is average. Unfortunately for my family, tonight it wasn't even that. Two of our three burritos were inedible greasy. The meat, Al pastor, tasted not fresh. I've been going to this taqueria for quite a while and it never fails me! It's in a perfect location, has incredibly efficient service, and most importantly the foods fabulous! Their prices are really reasonable and I could see them being able to raise them quite a bit since this taqueria is in a higher income area. I usually get a super burrito with grilled chicken but I've had a few other menu items and they're all good quality. This has been my favorite burrito place for years. It is simple, basic, small; but oh so good. There is a small indoor dining space which is no longer available during Covid, and they strict monitor the number of people inside- it can get tight and cramped. Wearing a mask is mandatory. There usually is a line outside on high peak times. The burrito is made right in front of you and the women making them are friendly and amazingly efficient. You select the type of tortilla, I like the green spinach one, and then choose the ingredients while they put it together. Be prepared to act and answer fast as they move quickly to keep the line moving along. If I could ever wrap a burrito so quickly, well let's say it's amazing to watch. I use to come here all the time with my mom years ago. I was in the area and decided to stop by. I love that their food is already cooked and ready to go so it's quick but still hot like it is freshly made. I always get a regular burrito rice,half black beans half whole, chicken and enchilada sauce (bomb) in the inside. I love their chips and green salsa as well. They have a pretty good drink selection as well. So basically a burrito chips and drink came up to $15 which isn't bad. They have a little sitting area in front but only enough for one family. Been coming here every so often for about 15 years, more so in the last few years since I occasionally work in the area. Staff is always helpful and friendly, food is always delicious (always super burrito with carnitas), never had a bad time... until a few days ago. I got about halfway through my burrito, and crunched down on something very hard. Tried to spit out whatever it was and finish the bite, but it had splintered and spread through my mouth. Spit it all out and found a very large piece of STONE in my burrito. In biting down on this, I chipped a molar and have an appointment now to see my dentist. Threw the burrito in the trash. I'm not an unreasonable person, and I understand that things happen. Had this been a hair, or a piece of bone or something, this may disgust some people but I would take it out and continue my meal. A 1/4" by 1/8" piece of stone is unacceptable in my book. Left my number with the staff, who looked at each other like this has happened before, and Carlos (not sure if the manager or owner), called me shortly after. I went back to the restaurant to show him the stone, and hopefully receive an explanation. After doing some research, it is very common for pieces of stone to end up in beans of any sort (in this case the pinto beans). Totally understandable being these plants grow so close to the ground, and the way they are harvested it is very known to happen. More research told me most taquerias receive their beans raw, and cook them in house. Carlos was very nice, and told me that when I do meet with my dentist, they would take care of me. Very much appreciated. But he also told me: "I'm not going to lie to you, it happens." He repeated that statement and I was dumbfounded by the lack of care for the situation. I'm not an unreasonable person, and "it happens" doesn't cut it. He also told me this happens every couple years, and admitted they are aware but "what can they do when they buy so much of this product per week?" In my line of work, if I killed someone or hurt them in some way, I couldn't just tell them "it happens". This obviously isn't as extreme as those situations, but when people injure themselves over something that is preventable, have to take time off of work and deal with any kind of medical procedure, "it happens" doesn't cut it. More quality control and attention to detail could avoid this situation. I've eaten at dozens of taquerias in my life, as I absolutely love Mexican food. Maybe it's just the luck of the draw, but this has never happened to me before, and hopefully it doesn't again, but "it happens". I will not be returning here unfortunately. The food has always been great, and so has the staff, hence the 2 stars instead of 1. But the lack of attention to detail cost me part of a tooth, and even IF they do take care of it, the financial and professional impact as well. My coworker who is from Mexico wouldn't finish the Carne' Asada Burrito, stating it wasn't fit to eat, I tried it but wet, there was nothing inside of the loose wrappings but overly watered down goop. On the plus side, the staff is super efficient in serving up the premade food. Even a line out the door moved quickly. Very basic fare. We stuck with tacos and went with both hard and soft which came with rice and bean sides (and multiple little plastic containers of salsa). We stayed and ate out front because the hard tacos would not stay crunchy for long with the ground beef. There really isn't anything to rave about (good or bad). I sort of hate to say it but I felt bad that everything was in take out containers and plastic ware - you can't even get water that is not in a plastic bottle. Honestly I already know this place isn't the best but I was hungry and close by so I went with it. My comments aren't really focused on the food, which was a notch below average for a carnitas burrito. What was annoying was I called, they picked up the phone and said no phone orders - rudely. Thinking they were busy I walked over and there was only one person in front of me. I asked the owner why no phone orders and he said it takes too much labor. I guess that's his prerogative but there is no way to order other than standing in line, no phone, no web. To me the food quality is a bigger issue, but it just seems like they could make it easier for customers to place orders. Also note they close at 8pm, not the listed hours here on Yelp. Much, much better (and cheaper) than El Agavero just a couple of doors down. The al pastor is quite greasy so in a burrito I eat it with a knife and fork or else it's dripping all over my hands, pants, shirt, etc. Compared to the E14th Oaktown or even SF Mission places I'd give it a 3 star rating, but here in Montclair, it's a cut above! ;-) read more
