Growing up with pupusas as a regular treat because I'm half Salvadoran made me want to try this place out. It's far less greasy then some other Pupusarias I've been to in the LA area. As a kid, my family didn't use too much oil to cook with and this place made me feel like I was at home. Of course I'm partial to the pupusas my mamita (grandmother) and aunt made growing up as the best, these are a great substitute. I can make a decent pupusa but I'm still nailing the perfect little round shape and thinness of them, so these look better then my own! I also shared their quesadilla (not the mexican style, this is a sweet pound cake type desert) which is at the front counter and it was delicious as well. please note, the quesadilla is very fattening so it's to be enjoyed just as rare as having cheese cake due to the massive amount of butter (paula deen's fav) and cheese. It is something to be tried, especially when it's warmed up. Even the smaller loaf is perfect to share for two. Can't wait to go back with some friends and try some things off the menu. read more

This place was recommended by a friend who raved about the food and boy, was I disappointed. I figured out I'm not a fan of El Salvadorian food. Nothing against the culture / region but I didn't find anything to rave about. I ordered the chicken dish which was dry, tasteless, and over salted. It seemed the chicken was beyond being cooked to the point of being uber dry with a bunch of salt. GF ordered a dish with Pupusas and it was a flavorless disc of dough. We ordered horchata, which is different than what's from Mexico. Instead of rice, this horchata was made with ground almonds or some variant thereof. Nothing fancy about the interior. This place is hidden in a small plaza off Rancho Road next to Taco Bell. We won't be back. Four thumbs down! read more

Went there over the weekend. Place was totally empty. Ordered the #3 combo w/ zucchini and cheese pupusa, pork tamale and plantains. Pupusa was great! Good texture and size w/ lots of salty cheese. Mmmmm. Plantains were great. Tamale was not great. Meat inside was good but... but ooooo that corn stuff was soggy and squishy and totally NOT how I like tamales. Service was fine, friendlyish and the waitress spoke enough English that I didn't even think about it. I didn't give it 5 stars because There is always 1 lady running the food, taking orders at the register , taking orders on the phone and at the same time being the waitress to 20tables at the same time. My happy belly has chosen La Carreta for my very first Yelp review. I have been going here for years and I don't think there is anything on the menu I haven't tried. I love the hole-in-the-wall, we-assume-you-speak-Spanish-if-you-love-us, and women-hand-crafting-pupsas-in-the-back feel. My favorites: All the pupusas Casamiento (mixed beans and rice) and crema. Mix them together for best results! Banana shake (amazing!) Cashew Atol (hot cashew drink only served in the cold months-thicker than Champurrado but unlike anything I have ever tasted) Fried plantains and crema Pork pie and pork tamale (the masa is far more flavorful and moist than a regular tamale) The only thing I have not been absolutely crazy about is the fried yucca but I only tried it once so in all fairness, they could have had an off night. It is very much a hole in the wall kind of place but, like every good find, it is well worth the hunt. Everything about this place is great. It's super easy to get to once you know where it is: First driveway on the left after exiting Rancho Rd & turn left off exit from 101 North is how I get there. I make it a point to refer any of my friends visiting the area to go here and order whatever they want along with PUPUSAS. You HAVE to get pupusas if you eat here! It's an unwritten rule! The pupusas are delicious and as good as anything you'll get in the Pico Union area of LA (I went to school nearby). I went yesterday with my son and we both ordered combos, which include pupusas and in our case, tamales and fried bananas. The tamales were kind of dry and flaky and the bananas were too mushy. Also, they gave my son beef pupusas when he ordered chicken, but in the end he didn't mind. So if you stick to the pupusas (which by the way, take about 20+ minutes to make), you'll be happy, as long as you don't mind maybe getting something you didn't exactly order either. read more

I went there so determined to really like this place. According to Yelp reviews, this place really rocked so I expected great things. The staff there were so unbelievably nice. One apologized for her bad English. They were soooo nice, I just wanted to love their food. I got it to go and really didn't like the food. Sorry, just didn't taste good. I got #6, 2 pupusas, chicken tamale and pork thing and a side of rice because I really like rice. The rice was the only thing I liked. The pupusas were no bueno. Cheese was oozing out of every orifice. And extremely greasy, was blotting it before I ate it. I just threw the other pupusa out, couldn't eat it. The tamale was oily, not what you expect from a tamale, but maybe that's the way they do tamales in El Salvador. Just not my thing. The pork thing was not bad, not good, but not bad. Rice was right on. I might come here again and give them another chance. Who knows, maybe the cook was having an off day. But the people who run the place were unbelievably nice and accommodating, I really think we should give them our business. For me, I will stop by again and try it once more. read more

WOWOW! Thousand Oaks surprises me with ethnic food. Tucked away in a small strip mall by the high way. You would assume by the sign and the dim lighting that this place was not the restaurant I have come to enjoy. I was meeting up with a friend and found a salvadorian place on yelp, i came prepared to be disappointed, being in Thousand Oaks and all, but boy am I am glad I did not meet my expectations. It's quiet and cozy. The decor is that of something more south-western which starkly contrasts the exterior. Locals are all around and they tend to be all Latinos. I was seated and asked the woman what to order and she recommended the combo platter. I was glad to have done so. They came with a bit of everything and none of it disappointed, with perhaps the exception of the meat that was a bit to dried out. My favorite things were probably the yucca root and the chile and cheese papusa. The yucca is always a great starchy food and if you have not tried it, here is definitely a solid place to get some. Now the pupusa was soft, and filled with cheese. The chile made a small complimentary biting of spice to accompany the well portioned cheesy goodness inside the papusa. When paired with the slaw and some hot sauce you get for a great bite. Perhaps it was being introduced to so many salvadorian foods at once, but I was not disappointed by any of the foods. Maybe with time and experience these opinions will change, but until then this is a gem that I am glad I found. TLDR - ethnic gem in Thousand Oaks. Get the combo platter and share it. I have been to Taco Bell next door and never noticed this restaurant. It is very much a hole in the wall. I found out about it from fellow yelpers. The pupusa were very good. They are a thick corn tortilla with cheese and other fillings in it. The salad my daughter ordered was very good. Reasonable prices for the amount of food you get. The pork tamale did not get a good review by one of the members of our party. Service was very good and friendly. Parking is easy. Some items come out in 10-15 minutes, others 30 minutes or so. All top notch ingredients in everything they cook, they never skimp on anything!!! Papusas are the best I've ever had. We always stop at La Carreta when driving through Thousand Oaks. We've only ever had the Tortas, but they are excellent. Particularly love the Chorizo y Juevos Torta. Great flavors and served by a very friendly staff. We stumbled upon this place three years ago and have been back many times. Not fancy. At all. But the food! I stuck with Combo #6 which is 2 pupusas (a flatbread with meat, cheese, or veggie filling), a tamale and a pork pie for under $8. With a glass of horchata, this was a delicious lunch.
