stopped in to try la casina recently and had a decent meal. Food was good with room for improvement. Service and timing were pretty poor and the reason it will be a long while before I return. For food - we started with the burrata and prosciutto. Good quality on both, and included some sundried tomatoes, basil and grilled bread. Could've used some olive oil. For pizzas, we went with carbonara and the milanese. Carbonara was garlicky and tasty, but between the cheese and pork it was salty. The milanese had a good amount of pepperoni and salami and cheese and was pretty good, the meats were sliced very thin and cooked unevenly/some burned. Biggest issue with this pizza was the sauce, which was watery and therefore lacking flavor. The pizza dough is nice and light (Roman pinsa style), has some chew with a nice crunch - this is their star. While the food was decent, the service and timing were poor. The restaurant was understaffed - which on a Saturday night isn't ideal. When we entered, we were told we could choose a seat on the patio and someone would come out to help us. We were one of two tables (the other was wrapping up their meal), with 8 or so tables so it was not at capacity out there. Servers came to clear the other table/provide their check/refill their drinks etc., but they just ignored us sitting there. Eventually the other table felt bad for us and asked the servers to help us out which was nice, but we had been sitting for 20 minutes. Finally got our orders in, it took 20 minutes for the appetizer, and another 30 minutes after the app for our pizzas (another table ordered after us and got their pizzas before us). In a neighborhood where we have many pizza options, I appreciate the uniqueness of La Casina! This Pinseria Romana shop has many options to choose from. I've tried mainly the vegetarian options and I've enjoyed them. Although they make good pizza I've removed a few stars because I've found them to be very inflexible when it comes to special requests. If you're looking to add toppings, it's been my experience that they won't accommodate that request. I also think the prices are extremely expensive for what you're getting. read more

Couldn't have had a better experience. We got a few of their specialty (la speciali) Pinsa pizzas to go (had an Airbnb around the corner.) We got a Margherita D.O.P. with prosciutto added, and another called a Montesacro (potato, lamb sausage, artichoke, rosemary, motz, & chili olive oil.) Both were superb. I waited at the bar to pick them up and the owners (both were making pies/working the oven) and the waitstaff were super nice, helpful in picking some Italian sodas to go with, etc. Ambiance was great and the pinsa w/Nutella was a perfect to end with! Stopped in after a nice stroll in Capitol hill. They were able to seat us right away at the bar. The wood fired pizza oven was right in front of us and you could see all of the pizzas being made right in front of you. They ran out of their special of the day but I was content browsing their extensive menu. Everything sounded good but I went with the La Gallia. The crust was nice and charred, salty from the prosciutto cutto, and the little rivers of olive oil really complemented the stracciatella cheese. Sprinkles of fresh thyme twigs on top was refreshing. It did take awhile for our pizzas to be made, but no harm no foul for a good tasty pizza. Would suggest getting some appetizers as you wait! read more

Overall, a bit of a mixed bag for lunch La Casina. The Service: The staff meant well but seem to be untrained and struggling. A question about beers on tap was met with "I can't drink". Puzzling. I was confused why my L'Amatrice pizza tasted exactly like my friend's Carbonara--upon checking the receipt, we got 2 of the latter. This mix-up was after repeating the order 3 times. The Food: The pizzas are pretty good. My partner's Margherita pizza was outstanding with a flaky crust. My mistakenly ordered Carbonara was tasty but overly salty. The Suppli (a Roman cousin to the more common Arancini) were dry and didn't have the characteristic stretchy mozarella. See the Rant. The Rant: OK, I get authenticity, but when we asked for a side of marinara to go with borderline inedible Suppli, the server came back and told us the "owner says 'no'". This was followed up by a lecture from the owner on how marinara isn't Roman, with us apologizing for asking for a non-authentic modification. A side of tomato sauce was eventually grudgingly delivered as we were debating going elsewhere for lunch. The staff look slightly scared of the owners, as we witnessed several tense interactions. In summary, I might come back for pizza (hard pass on the Suppli), but the service didn't leave me feeling warm and fuzzy. read more

We ordered 5*La Porchetta--Porchetta Romana, (seasoned pork belly), truffle-infused extra virgin olive oil, pecorino romano and black pepper: 8 inch flat pizza. The bread was special, not just ordinary flour, but a combination of wheat and rice which gave it a special texture. Freshly baked, all ingredients - pork belly, cheese, and bread balanced out into a harmonious taste. It was special and delicious. One of the best pizza I've had; it reminded me of the authentic Italian food in Rome. 3*Sbriciolata--Caffe/Pistacchio/Fragola Cioccolato/Strawberry A traditional Italian dessert made Crisp puff pastry w/Italian Chantilly with a sweet creamy mascarpone cream & dark chocolate or fragole: it was pre made and served in a small plastic cup. I've come to learn the from our server chris the flour is a combo of soy / wheat / rice flour, hence a much more digestible combination for those of us with sensitivities ! . They have Buffalo milk mozzarella which is GLORIOUS tasting- low casein cheese. This review is for a late lunch on a Saturday afternoon in early January. bar: La Casina DC does not yet have a liquor license, but you can bring your own bottle of wine. service: the menu is via QR code. The app makes it look like you need to order online, but it turns out there is wait service. Angela took care of us. She was attentive and helpful. food: I had Margherita D.O.P. (San Marzano sauce, mozzarella, olive oil, and fresh basil for $15.90) and my wife had La Milanese (tomato sauce - apparently not San Marzano - pepperoni, salami, mozzarella, and olive oil for $12.90). Pizzas here are oblong, in the style of Rome, not circular, in the Neapolitan style. We felt both pizzas were heavily sauced, but that could be a nod to American preferences. My pizza took 40 minutes to come out and my wife's pizza came out five minutes later. Pizzas are not cut and are served on wooden cutting boards. The menu is divided into three pizza sections: Classica, Romana, and Casina. Perhaps of note, there is a margherita under Classica, the La Margherita della Casina for $12.90, and there is a margherita under Casina, the Margherita D.O.P., that I ordered. There are no salads or calzones, but there are a few starters and desserts. details: This is Capitol Hill, so it's very limited parking. The Eastern Market metro station is a two-minute walk. They have a small outdoor seating area. The interior is very nicely done. The owners have a sister restaurant in Rome. They are very enthusiastic about their place. The pizzas are made from their wood fire oven, and it a creates a nice char on the pizza. The dough very good, as it's crispy and light. I got the L'Amatrice, and the ingredients seemed fresh. The pinsa crust is crispy and delicious. We loved the flavors of L'amatrice, which our server recommended from the Romana pinsa list for our first visit. We had to try La Gallia based on the photos, and it's as good as it looks. To make sure you're not surprised, the prosciutto and stracciatella cheese is cold on top of the hot pinsa dough. La Casina Pinseria Romana is a homey Italian restaurant with the most exquisite pinsa pizza recipes! Here I ate many delicious pizzas with my family and even I ordered and extra La Porchetta pizza to go. We got to watch our beautiful L'Amatrice, La Carbonara, and Capitol Hill pizzas being made in front of us and had a lovely chat with the La Casina chefs/owners. They moved to here six months ago from Rome and are loving getting to know people from DC and beyond who visit the restaurant. Also everyone apparently has an Italian grandmother and they get to practice speaking Italian here. Me and my family learned about the Pinsa dough which is made from Wheat, Rice, and Soy flour, this combined with the air bubbles massaged into the dough makes the pizza very easy to digest and feeling light even after so much good food. Got takeout last night. The BEST risotto balls I've ever had. Perfectly fried, light crispy exterior. Bite in and burst of flavor, sauce on the inside. Sooo good! Didn't have a good experience and won't be going back. Was looking forward to trying La Casina and tried a few times to get a reservation. Finally secured one at 7:30 on a Friday evening. We were sat on time but it took a little bit for them to take our order. We ordered two pizzas and it took more than an hour to get them. We were only asked about a drink refill once over the hour. All the tables around us were also waiting on food for about an hour. I got the La Milanese pizza and my date got La Cacio e Pepe. The Milanese was very peppery and too much so for my liking. My date liked her pizza fine enough. The waitresses did their best but they were so flustered looking running around and that took away from the experience as well. Overall, there is good pizza to be had in other places nearby that I won't be going back or recommending this place. read more
