This is a small family owned restaurant that does things right! This review is based almost entirely on the food which is fantastic! It's a small, simple place that's nicely decorated but definitely NOT fancy. In fact, it's a little divey but charming nonetheless! They don't serve alcohol so forget about that. This place is all about the food! I think they have the best pupusas in town! They have a very distinct corn flavor and are always cooked perfectly with a crunch on the outside of them. They are served with pickled onions and shredded cabbage plus a homemade sauce on the side. Outstanding! Everything that I have had here has been great! Some dishes that I will mention are the fried chicken which is as close to homemade fried chicken as you will ever find in a restaurant. Easily the absolute WORST food I've ever had in my entire adult life! How on earth does anyone enjoy Honduran food? It's TERRIBLE!!! The "carne asada" is INCREDIBLY DRY and BLAND!! Zero flavor and tough like chewing on a tire! The Yuca hervida was also SUPER DRY and they don't even put garlic over it to give it flavor. I'm not a fan of their coleslaw and their beans are very weird. The pork chop was not terrible but was also lacking seasoning. I don't understand how places like this stay in business, but it's definitely clear that ONLY Hondurans eat here. The server which is the daughter of the owners was VERY,VERY friendly and polite. HIDDEN GEM ALERT. Have you ever tried Honduran food? If not, you have to try La Catracha! This place is delicious AND affordable! So what did I order? I got their pupusas and roasted beef strips! The pupusas were filled with perfectly seasoned refried beans and cheese. They were so so good. I never had anything like them! And the roasted beef strips were insanely juicy and tender. I especially loved the unique seasoning. My roasted beef strips also came with rice, refried beans, cheese, fresh avocado, and some cabbage salad. So much food! I'm actually so excited to go back. Next time, I'm definitely going to try their chicken and fish. Also, HUGE shoutout to Rachel, the daughter of this wonderful family-owned business. Rachel is the sweetest and so attentive. This is authentic Honduran food, local, like you find when you are actually in Honduras. Service was excellent and this is a restaurant more for the experience if you're not used to Honduran food. Servings are enormous so either share a portion or come with a huge appetite! I had the fried chicken which consisted of two drumsticks and a thigh, crispy fried with almost a sweet sauce and it came with a mound of shredded cabbage with some kind of sauce on top and some fried plantain that was served at room temperature, almost crispy, not at all soft. Very different. My husband ordered the folded tortilla which was homemade and stuffed full with beef, avocado, sour cream, and red beans. Three of them are in one serving so we have food left over for a week. This is a hole in the wall dive kind of restaurant that is thoroughly authentic so come for the food and the service. read more

This place is a small, family owned restaurant in the corner of a small shopping plaza. As a Honduran, I'm pleased to say that this place makes some delicious and authentic Honduran food. The baleadas and pupusas are great, the sopa de rez (beef soup) is homey, and the pollo chuco (fried chicken with plantains and slaw( was well worth the wait. The natural juices were very good too. My coworker and I was in town for work during NBA Allstar weekend and found this spot after a night of partying and the food was sooo good. At first it wasn't pack but within minutes it was fill with locals and everyone enjoying their individual dishes. The waitress was very nice even was teaching us how to say some of the dishes in Spanish a great translator. I would definitely go back again and recommend to anyone in NC of visiting. read more

Walking into the restaurant you are immediately greeted by the owner, Edwin, and asked to sit wherever you'd like. You get handed the menu which is written in all Spanish but Edwin or any server is happy to translate. This might scare someone to visit because of the language barrier but they encourage you to ask any questions you may have about the menu and they will promptly answer. You might feel a bit of culture shock when you dine at this establishment, but the employees will make you feel at home. The location of the restaurant is visible from the light rail station connected to the international grocery store Compare Foods. This is a great location for the restaurant in that the demographic that typically shops at the grocery store is from outside the United States and have the option to enjoy some Honduran cuisine. They recently just renovated the inside of their establishment and it appears modern with maintaining their authenticity. La Catracha has been open for service for over 15 year and it is not going anywhere any time soon. When entering the restaurant, you can smell a sweet almost pancake like smell that is coming from the home-made tortillas and pupusas. Their tortillas are different from that most people would recognize as Mexican tortillas in that they are made of flour and are fluffy. These tortillas are a staple in Honduran cuisine and are eaten with just about every meal. You can order these tortillas as a side item or as a meal as a baleada which is a tortilla filled with a black bean puree, crema de queso (Honduran cream cheese), and queso fresco (fresh cheese). Along with the baleadas Hondurans are known for their pupusas which is a corn meal based tortilla filled with the choices of meat, cheese, and or vegetables. These pupusas can be ordered at La Catracha to order and they are worth it. If you have never experienced Honduran food, then head over to La Catracha. Edwin would be delighted to serve you traditional meals from his country that will make you feel like you were in his home. He is proud that he has owned and ran this establishment with his family keeping traditional cooking techniques and recipes. This is my kind of place. Understated. The focus is on good Honduran food. Clean. Simple. Feels like a place that is family focused. I had some boiled and flavored chicken pieces. It came with lime flavored yellow rice and cabbage slaw and a black bean purée. It also came with a side of fried plantains. The server explained that they were flexible and that we could substitute one thing for another. So, I forfeited the hand made tortilla for the plantains. The menu included a lot of meat items as well as breakfast options. There were also many drink selections that are well known in the Latin American world. TVs flanked the walls, but were not a distraction. It was quiet and great for conversation. My friend, Virginia, and I had some fun reviewing the Trump/Putin summit and still managed to keep our food down. This was a fabulous culinary experience. Food is good. I would recommend their Baleadas and pollo frito con tajadas.However their customer service is horrible. I've shown up well after their posted opening time and the place is closed because the owner or corresponding person isn't present. A true hit or miss with them. I decided to try La Catracha today. I went in around 1:00p.m. & the food came out at 1:28p.m -- not too bad of a wait. There were a lot of customers inside, & luckily there was one free table. It was dirty so the owner cleaned it up. I noticed the floor had not been swept (it was really bad) The waitress really did not have good customer service, she wasn't bad but she could've done better. I ordered the bailadas ($8.00 for 3). I wouldn't say they are the "best" but they were okay, I would give them a 4 out of 5. I also ordered the chicken and tajadas .. now this was the BOMB! It was really good, 5 stars for sure! I aim giving this restaurant a 3 star rating because of the customer service and the dirty floors/tables. I was looking for something quick, cheap, and not BBQ and decided to check this place out. These types of places are my favorites; hole in the wall, don't speak very much English, authentic cooking unchanged for American taste. I'm used to good Latin/Hispanic food and this place is on par.
