Since moving back to NWI in late 2015, my wife and I were on the lookout for a spot to grab a good taco and a cold beer. The Queso Fundido con Chorizo is second to none in my opinion at least as far as NWI is concerned. The chips and salsa are great and pack just the right amount of heat. I love the homemade Corn Tortillas but wouldn't mind if they started making homemade Flour Tortilla's but if that happened I may never go anywhere else lol. The selection of Mexican Beers onsite are nice as I tend to gravitate towards Modelo (Can) or Bohemia. This place is authentic and staff is friendly. They even changed the TV from Futbol Mexicano to Futbol Americano and we watched the Notre Dame vs MSU game that night. When we lived in Hammond, we went to La Cecina in Calumet City. This is just as good. We both got Carne Asade and were both pleased. Good salsa n chips. We don't go here to drink. Lived in the area for 20 years and tonight was first time in. Place was all but empty. Have seen other reviews about how good food was so expected a lot better. Best thing I can say about the place was the way they served the tortilla looked like hand made napkins that kept them warm. Tortilla was not bad either. Can't say that about the rest of the food, margarita smelled and tasted like soap,guess at least the glass was clean. I'm upset I had to give this place even one star. My husband & I went here for breakfast yesterday, I ordered that huevos rancheros with cecina & he ordered a quesadilla & sope. When I got my food, the $4 they charged me for the piece of meat they gave me was ridiculous. My eggs were so overcooked that they had turned green, Gross. The waitress didn't come around to our table until 20 mins later & I didn't even eat my food, so I showed her the eggs & she looked at me like I was crazy & asked if I wanted them to remake my eggs, I said no, it took you long enough to come to our table & the rest of my food is cold now. I just don't want it. So she took the plate away, had she offered to remake the whole thing over I would have been fine but just the eggs, really???? Horrible horrible service. Than we get the bill & I ask why I am being charged for something I didn't even eat, because yes they charged me full price! The guy who rung me up takes my ticket to the "manager"& rudely comes back & says that he can either take off $2 or the price of the horchata. I said are you kidding me? He said well your complaint was for the eggs not the meal, I said correct but I didn't even eat the rest of the meal, he said well I already told you what I could do. I said just take the horchata off. No apologies, so rude, no customer service what so ever! I will be telling everyone my horrible experience & anywhere I can post my story I will. NEVER EVER AGAIN! For someone who has eaten at numerous Mexican restaurants over the years, I can honestly state that this restaurant is truly authentic in its menu offerings. The food is absolutely delicious. My wife loves the Tacos al Pasteur and I dined on half of the beef Burrito Suiza (it was too much to eat in one setting). The dining area is clean and not overly decorated with Mexican nicknacks. Went there for lunch with a friend today. Her order was incorrect but was corrected. My order was incorrect, but the waitress lied right to my face and said the flour tortilla was corn. I have a gluten allergy and could have gotten very sick if I'd eaten it. My friend tested it for me and said it was definitely flour. Her order was on corn tortillas and it looked and tasted completely different. The waitresses seemed to be laughing about it, too. Never coming back here! read more

Delicious, authentic dishes and ingredients! My fiancé and I went for dinner this Friday night; both very satisfied with the quality of food and overall experience. The salsa was delicious (original, homemade and well-spiced). I enjoyed an order of oysters (6 raw on the half shell with a fresh salsa accompaniment) and an incredibly good Sopa Azteca. From the menu, I expected it to be a nice version of tortilla soup (with cheese and avocado on top), but it was even better than expected; the richness of the Mexican cheese and onions reminded me of a French onion soup, and in a generous portion too. My fiancé got the house specialty Cecina, which came with guacamole, beans, and corn tortillas. He was new to the dish, but it was spot-on with my memory of my central Mexican host mom's preparation. So good!! I would give 4.5 stars for a little lag in service (no silverware for my appetizer or glass for the beer), but La Cecina ("#3") was friendly, very clean, authentic Mexican offerings at a reasonable price. Will definitely try their breakfast options in the future, and return soon. Well worth the drive from Hammond, and highly recommended overall. read more

This is one of my favorites, but if you don't like authentic, don't go. This food compares to the food I have eaten at neighborhood restaurants in Cozumel. It is comparable in price to the other Mexican Restaurants in the area. I love the margaritas, but I do only get the traditional lime margarita on the rocks with salt, so I can't comment about the flavored ones. The staff are also authentic,very friendly, but sometimes a little overwhelmed. There have been times when they did not have enough waiter/waitresses for the amount of customers they had, so service gets a little slow. The only menu complaint I can think of is they don't have al la carte. Sometimes I just like one enchilada with a little rice, but have to order a whole meal. read more

I'm a Mexican food snob and can honestly say this is the BEST in all of Northwest Indiana! I won't step foot in Jalepenos, Don Pablo's, Don Pedro's, Pepes, or any other chain "Mexican". I want homemade corn tortillas, good salsas, and FLAVOR. I've tried other "authentic" places in the area and nothing beats my La Cecina! Tacos cecina are my order every time, so I can't vouch for any other entrees. Had the burrito once, it was good. Rice and beans are always homemade. Red salsa and green salsas are to DIE for. Guacamole is excellent. Prices are extremely reasonable. We don't mind the slow service, but that's usually our friends' complaint whenever we bring someone new. We always tip our waiter or waitress way over 20% because they work hard and do a great job. Wish you guys would start live mariachi or something on the weekends! :). We LOVE La Cecina! read more

First coming in the young guy that's supposed to be the host walked to us without a greet it even asked us if we were dining in or takeout. Second thing is we ordered STEAK nachos and was given ground beef. They argued with us that it was steak. We also ordered the trio fajitas with STEAK, chicken and shrimp. The meat on the nachos was ground up but the staff argued that it was chopped. So we sent it back because the waiter told us there's try different kinds of steak. Basically there's a cheap steak and an more expensive steak that they use when you order the fajitas. The problem is that the menu doesn't specify ground, chopped or cut steak. It only said steak on the menu. Long story short they charge us for the nachos we didn't eat and said they were still back in the kitchen if we wanted them after it was sent back over an hour before checking out. I even gave the waiter a big tip thinking they knew what good customer service meant and would rectify the situation. I will never go back to this restaurant. I paid for nachos I didn't eat and had I know I would've just keep them and dealt with it being ground beef. Instead I gave 7 dollars for nothing, 7 dollars isn't nothing but my wife and I were pretty upset SGD how they handle us. YOU'VE BEEN WARNED! I can't believe this place has four stars. It doesn't even deserve one star. I ordered the shrimp fajitas and they were disgusting. The shrimp tasted old and undercooked. The bell peppers, onions and tomatoes were sliced up into huge pieces. The side salad was already looking old, brown and soggy. Also ordered a side of guacamole and the guacamole was black and rotten at the bottom. For some reason the guacamole had rotten lettuce and purple onions. We will never come here again. read more

Waiter asked what we wanted to drink without giving us any menus, so we had to play a guessing game. Ordered an entrée that came with a salad and did not receive a salad. I love Mexican food. I eat it 2 to 3 times a week. I really could eat it everyday, but my family won't. I Have never had bad Mexican food, some better than others but never bad. I had being eyeing La Cecina for over a year and was really excited about giving it a try. This was THE WORST FOOD I have ever eaten in my life. I took one bite of the very strange pale colored refried beans. They taste like the greasy gel type goo stuff that sits in the bottom of the pan when you make pork chops. They smelled terrible and as if they had been reheated and reheated for a couple days. One bite of my Chile Relleno and I had to spit it into my napkin. I immediately felt ill. My husband said almost exactly the same thing about his beans. He could not eat more than two bites of his enchiladas and quesadillas before he was concerned that they may make him sick. We told our waitress that we did not like the barely touched food on our plate and wanted nothing else. We were given the full bill until we asked if they could take something off. They reluctantly took 25% off. The manager was annoyed and did not even want to look at or speak to us. We were not mean loud or make a seen. We still left the very slow waitress a 20% tip of the original bill. The managers apology was basically not "I'm sorry" but "Sorry that "YOU" have a problem" NEVER EVER EVER will I eat there again. I have never given a restaurant review because I feel that people have different tastes and likes. But THIS FOOD WAS SO BAD for so many reasons! read more
