The ambiance was my favorite. They played great music, a little loud but not overkill. I got fundido, it was a little pricey for just tortilla chips and cheese. Their drinks are small and not strong, but they are tasty. I also had shrimp tacos, they were the highlight as they had a nice sweet and sour type sauce that was really good. Their flautas weren't great by themselves, but they serve them with guacamole and beans and a sauce that all went together well. Service was ok. It was a little busy, so not the fastest, but it didn't take long enough to complain. Overall, it's too expensive, and I wasn't blown away by anything. read more

Let me start off with saying the ambiance is great. The details inside are nice and overall a good vibe. Loved their iPad menus - nice modern touch. Now the food - I ordered chicken tacos which were good and presentation of all items was nice with the smoked flower on each plate. We ordered Veggie Quesadillas with onions, peppers, and beans inside. What we got was beans and chicken. Waitress took it back and we then got just beans lol. We got the bill and were charged $21 for it! When I asked the waitress on why this wasn't comped, her response: there is no manager so she can't do anything. Manger only comes during closing lol She then goes back and negotiated to waive the $7 beans charge. Completely in disbelief on how this whole situation was playing out - she managed to waive the beans but not the actual dish? Never experienced this at ANY establishment, but hey there's a first time for everything. read more

We were craving some tacos and were going to go with our usual local spot but decided to check out this new spot instead. La chula is located in the up and coming downtown Rahway and it did not disappoint! The ambiance is super cool giving night time vibes with their decor. And the food was BOMB. Too often these "vibey" Mexican spots disappoint on the food but this was goooood. We had birria tacos, al pastor tacos, and the flautas. Everything was delicious. The cocktails also looked great but we didn't try any. We stuck with the the Mexican cokes. Would love to try this place again and see how it transitions during late night hours! read more

This place has no regard that they operate in a residential neighborhood and have music blasting at all hours of the day/night. The weekends are even worse than weekdays but please respect your neighbor's and lower the music/control your belligerent guests. read more

Nice welcome when you walk in. Our waiter John William was attentive and helpful with the menu. We tried the queso. So cheesy and delicious. We also tried the flautas. Presentation was so nice and ended with the combo fajitas. We will be back. Manager was friendly as well. Two things that were not great - one is which is not unusual is they put a charge if you use a credit card and the second was they automatically added 18% gratuity on the bill. Food was really good and aesthetically pleasing. Definitely IG worthy. Service was subpar and after receiving the bill & noticing that gratuity is automatically added (which I normally don't mind) the server didn't care to seat us with water, we kept having to ask other servers or workers in passing for things. Drinks took 20+ minutes to arrive and if ordering as a couple both drinks would often be brought out minutes apart so I would have to wait to even toast until my bf received his drink 5+ mins after mine. Oh and the lack of AC, you're serving hot Mexican food in a fairly small place and it's like they waited for people to leave or drown in sweat to turn on the AC...then began to play Russian roulette with the AC, on for 5 minutes off for 30. That alone made it uncomfortable to enjoy our meal. I want to try this place again with hopes that it was just an off day. This place isn't too expensive but it also isn't cheap so keeping that AC kicking especially on a muggy hot summer day should be a MANDATORY. read more

Came for a quick bite with my boyfriend before catching a train. We ordered the guac, flautas, and fish tacos to share. The guac was definitely enough to share, but we were 99% sure they used pre-packaged guac and added some chopped red onions to make it "fresh." The color/consistency of the guac was off and I didn't find a single chunk of avocado. It was giving supermarket guacamole.. Fish tacos were also listed in the menu as fried but beware! This means pan fried/seared and not breaded and fried. We brought this up to our server, who took back our tacos only to.. give it back to us? No changes. The flautas were very yummy- no complaints, but the only saving grace. We were already turned off by the guac from the jump. Really wanted to like this place, but it's underwhelming. I visited La Chula for the first time and the food & service was good. It was a Wednesday so it was not that busy. The reason I could not give more stars is because the check came and already had 18% gratuity added and it was just two of us. Usually a group of 4 or more restaurants add gratuity. I called my Hispanic friends who told me about the place and they communicated that they been there a few times and never was pre charged gratuity on their bill. Very disturbing for me who is a big tipper and feel this was done because of our skin color. read more

I went there for the second time because of the one positive review that I read. Unfortunately, my opinion still stands. The food was just OK and the drinks were not good. The atmosphere was very Instagram-ish, but that's about all they had going for them. It's unfortunate because it's in a very cute area, but the food is simply disgusting and an edible. Went for some drinks and food boy was I disappointed. The drinks didn't even stay the type of tequila they were using. The next day I had terrible headache must have been cheap alcohol for such expensive cocktails. The food I got was disgusting. They use blue food coloring in their sour cream to add to the appeal. I assume for the food overall was dry and bland. The inside is beautiful with great decorations. Recommend with reservation We decided to visit this place because it was new and thought it would be a quick bite. The place isn't big but the vibe is chill. The food presentation was good We were a party of six. We ordered only main dishes. The corn didn't appear to be worth the price plus the neighboring table said it was meh. We ordered the Caesar salad, chicken taco,birria taco and salmon dish. Everything was good. Fellas if you want something hearty don't get the Birria taco get the birria mania instead. The smoke provides a cool effect to the presentation but can be annoying if you don't like or can't tolerate the smoke. The service for me was horrible. Upon our arrival we were sat right away but no server. The manager had to take our order. After all that no one greeted us as our designated waiter or waitress. The food was brought out by the runner who appears to be very fast and efficient. We even had a larger party who sat after us have a designated waiter. We had to flag them down to pay our bill. Since we were a party of six they still charge us the 18% gratuity. When asked they explain the tip is divided upon all the staff but whatever. So, if you're on a time limit or have asthma or breathing issues then this is not the place for you FYI: they charge an extra 4% if you pay with debit or credit. read more
