We had a group of about 15 people on a Saturday night and were given a long rectangular table. The restaurant was not overly crowded. Credit to the staff, they handled us well and they stayed in control. There were a few moments when they mixed up who was getting which food item, but that is understandable. I ordered the carne asada. It came with the standard yellow rice, typical mashed pinto beans with the white cheesy circle in the middle, the usual thin meat...so thin it could have come off a deli slicer. The plate also had a thick tomato slice, half an avocado sliced, and grilled onions. They added nice color and flavor to the dish. The meat was ok, but not great. It was so thin, that they didn't rally have to ask me how I wanted the steak prepared. Of course, we got chips and salsa. I like that they put the salsa in small pouring jars as opposed to having several bowls of it. But I didn't really care for the salsa, it was too mild, almost even sweet.' Lunch at La Cocina is a good choice. Lots of lunch specials. I always go for the # 17, the quesadilla with steak, chicken and shrimp along with onions and peppers. Comes with lettuce, diced tomatoes sour cream and guacamole. Very large entree for lunch. Took part of it home for dinner. Lunch started with fresh chips and salsa. My cousin had the chicken taco/burrito special. It was very large. Also came with a side of rice. We ordered a side of guacamole which was fresh and good. We meet there since it's close to Duke's campus at Arringdon. The server was attentive with refills and such. They also don't rush us or bother us so we can have time to visit. The dining room is large enough to accommodate large tables and many booths. There is a bar but neither of us drink at lunch so we didn't order alcohol. read more

Do not come here if you expect to eat chipotle flavored or Americanized "Mexican" food. Food: I went with the combination option of enchilada, tostada and taco. I wanted to try enough of the menu to give this place a fair review since it has low stars. The food tasted like something I've had when visiting Mexicos local spots or NYC Queens food trucks. The flavors and seasoning are authentic and ingredients are fresh. I liked my meal. Price: I thought for $13 I did not get much food. I saw a review that said to come for lunch to make it worth your buck. If I come back I'll definitely do that. Ambiance: there is authentic Mexican music playing. The servers are singing along. It gives a very homey feel to the place. It's nothing fancy but great for a quick bite when you don't feel like cooking. Service: our server was great! Friendly, fast and have great recomendaciones. I ordered a chicken quesadilla and it was one or two pieces of chicken and TONS of peppers and onions and no cheese. It was horrible and I could not eat it. To me a quesadilla is meat and melted cheese - period. The chips were not that good either. My sister got chicken tacos and did not like them. we threw out most of the food. read more

We've been ordering here for awhile. The chicken chimichangas are decent enough. Food was always ready fast and it was reasonably priced. But after venturing away from the chimis a few times now everything has been a miss. The fajitas come out with chicken whiter than me, same with the ACP. Someone's uncle Chad is in the back flinging these up and they forgot to teach him how to season. I ordered some Al Pastor tacos. $14.99 for whatever this is. I was in a rush to get some late lunch in and stumbled upon this place. I really wanted some Mexican food but looking at the reviews I was a tad bit hesitant. I figured why not try it out for myself. It took a while for me to initially get serviced. I received chips and salsa long before receiving something to drink which was a little odd. The vibe wasn't really to my liking either, majority of the servers were sitting on their phones in plain sight.. Just the beginning of everything was a little slow for my liking but once I put in my order the food came out fast. Now, being that I do eat ACP a lot this one was my least favorite. It lacked flavor, seasoning and just some overall love. The cheese sauce didn't really stand out to me at all and it wasn't enough of it up there. I don't go here often, though it's near home. I stopped by one evening on the way home from work, and had the burrito deluxe (chicken), a side of refried beans (extra), and a frozen mango margarita. The burrito deluxe was so big that I didn't need the refried beans. I ordered the medium sized margarita, and it was yummy, but bigger than expected, as well. I would've done fine with the small. They bring chips and salsa to the table early, but they're just okay. Save the calories for entree. read more

Standard Mexican fare at reasonable prices. Definitely not bad for a quick meal or take out. The burrito de la Roqueta was satisfying and a very large portion. The interior of the tortilla had a nice mix of steak, queso, and tomatillo salsa topped with fresh pico de gallo. The rice was nothing special. My husbands Chile relleno and tacos were standard also, good but nothing particularly noteworthy. My margarita (large on special for $7.50) had a strong flavor of sweet and sour mix and very little tequila taste which was a bit of a disappointment for me but for the price I thought it wasn't too bad. My favorite Mexican food in Raleigh to date. I should caveat that I'm from Southern California, so my taste in Mexican food skews more that direction than the Tex-Mex style. As a result, I have had a really hard time finding what I like (recommendations please?!). However, La Cocina seems to blend both styles fairly well. Personally, I love the little salsa cups you get so everyone can have their own, and the lunch menu is fast and reasonable. (Wouldn't recommend their plain margaritas, the mix is not good. Three stars is about right for this establishment in my experience. It's serviceable for when the Mexican cravings hit which is pretty much every day for me. They have four vegetarian options and I've had the burritos twice. They are a pretty decent size for about $8 so you can fill up for cheap here. I liked the food but the veggies were watery and just made everything a really soggy mess. The queso, chips and salsa were what you'd expect but pretty tasty. This small Mexican joint is one of our go-tos in the Brier Creek area. The vibe is unassuming, but very comfy. This is a great place to grab some food or a drink. The free chips and salsa are always delicious and the margaritas are so good (and are frequently on special). We love the carnitas, the quesadillas, and the choripollo - and don't sleep on the chicken wings! The food always comes out fast and the waiters are very prompt. Horchata was watered down and the tacos were dry and bland. One of our usual lunch locations. The service is usually quick. The lunch menu has many options. I'm pretty high maintenance with my Mexican orders, hold the onions, add tomatoes, etc...and the get it right. When done they bring the bill and then you have to get in line to pay. I don't love that but to add to it, it's the same line for people waiting to be seated. That's my biggest complaint, but overall it's a good option with the standard menu choices of the typical Mexican restaurants in the area (i.e., Speedy Gonzales). read more

Very disappointing, not much flavor at all and they appeared to top the burrito and enchiladas what looked like a can of tomato paste? The beef seemed like hamburger meat. They got my friend's order completely wrong. And they charged us each for wrong items on the ticket. We had the server fix the ticket three times because he kept putting things on the wrong check. I've been to both the East Garner and Cary locations four times now, so this was the first time I tried the other location now in Morrisville. I definitely thought they do serve a little bigger portion for lunch I thought for my shrimp fajitas than Cary did. But, SO good and food is consistent and the same deliciousness at both locations though. I have made it my go to Mexican food place now at least two times in the week when I need that big Southern California hug, as I heard the owners were from CA and the food is consistent with what I find in CA. There's now no reason to go shopping around for better mexican food. I found it here finally! It's that good and my leftovers are always gone! This is what I had leftover after eating two fajitas already so it was enough at least for three more to take home. I've been eating at a few restaurants that surrounds La Cocina for a while now, I thought I would finally give it a try. I stopped in for dinner and there weren't many people. In about 30-minutes, the place started to fill up. This was around 6:00 p.m. The complimentary chips and salsa is a plus. The chips were warm, complimented by the fresh salsa. The menu was huge. There were lots of options to choose from. I went with the three chicken enchiladas. It was delicious and tasty. I was impress with it. Good customer service overall. I would say I'm a regular at this establishment. I frequent maybe 4-5 times a month. The last 4 visits have been pretty bad. I order takeout more so than dine in and this last visit (today at 1:30pm) might have to be my last. The chips have been stale almost every visit, ordered a sweet tea and it came unsweet (mind you - they up charge drinks) and the food just isn't good like it used to be. Not sure if they are under new management or they have a new cook but they need to figure it out. read more

Service was quick in the beginning and the food came out pretty fast as well. The food was great! I had the chicken fajitas and a mango frozen margarita. So much food, literally a mountain of food and it was really good. But the service very quickly took a turn for the worst. After receiving our food, our waitress did not check on us once and walked by multiple times checking on other tables. She asked if we were ready for our check after us waiting probably 15 minutes while just sitting at our table staring awkwardly in silence at each other cause we were ready to go, you know how it is. When you keep looking around hoping like someone must be coming back to check on you..But no one ever does. And I really try to be patient and understanding if servers are busy. Anyways We ordered some churros to go and they came out while we waited for the check. But over 30 minutes later she once again comes by. She asks if we are ready for the check and THIS time asked if we were together or separate. For reference, she first asked if we were ready for our check at 8:18. (Yes I know the time because I was checking the clock because we had been waiting at that point, petty idc.) the second time she asked if we were ready it was 8:52. Like what man?! I brought up us having to wait over 30 minutes for the check to which she says she was busy and we were supposed to have gone to the front to pay... if that was the case why on earth wouldn't you have said that from the start and why did you ask twice if we were ready for the check like you were bringing it. I simply replied "you should've just communicated that if that was the case" and she got an attitude. Anyways, long story short-- great food, good hosting, bad service from an inattentive server that didn't just take accountability for forgetting our table and got an attitude instead. And we still left a tip, not 20% but more than most would've in this case. 2 stars for the (1) food and (2) host. He was super friendly. read more

New to Brier creek area and live just a few miles from here. My gf and I thought we would give it a try.. asked to sit in booths at bar which wasn't busy. Young lady behind the bar was really great. She allowed us to try the margarita mix since it was already pre-made (you can never be to sure about this..most of the time it's just sour mix) was not our favorite so we stuck to the traditional Corona.
