Let's face it, there are plenty of Mexican food places in Ramona, but most are sub par at best. Not La Covina (the kitchen). This is a family owned and operated Mexican restaurant that serves delicious high food with care. The "Mom" is always there, Dad is there about 75% of the time I go. The kids are often there working also. The food is very good, made with care, you can tell. Importantly the food is consistent, unlike many other Mexican restaurants, the quality doesn't depend on who's cooking that day. You order at the counter, but they have nice indoor seating area, and they bring your order to your table. They serve traditional Mexican drinks plus Mexican beers. Their "Bravo" sauce is so good! Try it, or their Bravo or Aida's Burrito. You won't be disappointed! read more

Pretty decent Mexican food in a very casual restaurant. We were in Ramona for another show at Ramona Mainstage, and needed a quick meal before a long night of music. My husband and cousin were keen to try this place, and I - not wanting to delay dinner and not wanting to cause a fight - acquiesced. This place was packed when we got there. There was a line at the counter, and almost every table was taken. We took that as a good sign, and pondered the menu while waiting for our turn at the counter. Once there, my cousin and I each ordered the special of the night (one flauta, one crispy taco with rice and beans), and my husband ordered the chile relleno plate. We found the only four-seat table and settled down to wait. In no time at all, we had a large platter of chips and a salsa sampler in front of us. That was a nice bonus - something none of us expected - and the salsas were good, to boot! Our food came out on styrofoam plates, with plastic cutlery and tiny napkins. Not that that mattered, as the food was pretty delicious and very fresh. The flauta was the star, in my mind. Crispy and filled with tasty meat, covered with sour cream, shredded lettuce and cheese. I didn't really touch the rice or beans (I was full by the time I plowed through the equally yummy taco), but my husband said they were good. They came by to refill our drinks, ensured we were set on everything we could need, and just in general made us feel welcome. Everything was prepared well, tasty, and the restaurant has a cool old town vibe. The lady who helped us was really nice, had worked there for 34 of the 35 years they have been open! This is a local place that I find to be quite good. The burrito I had was quite hefty. I prefer a carne asada burrito with just cheese, beans and rice. I found the price reasonable for my personal style burrito. I know people who love the Aida burrito, which I also find tasty. They offer shredded beef rolled tacos. Went there for lunch and chose the "Bravo" burrito, since it was the house sauce and I was feeling adventurous. :p Was surprised when I got a nice portion of chips and 3 hot sauces with it. All three were delicious. The burrito was excellent. The "Bravo" sauce was terrific. Very tasty and gave it a very nice flavor! The place is simple, but very clean, so top notch from me! We were too hungry to wait for lunch from Anza Borrego to San Diego, so we did a quick Yelp search to find a place on the way back. There weren't too many choices with decent reviews, so we settled for La Cocina. Street parking was easy to find. The restaurant itself was pretty busy but we found a table for the 5 of us. Service was great, we were served chips and salsa (with salsa refills!). We did have to wait ~20 minutes for our food to arrive. They had also mixed up the orders which led one of our group members to bite into the wrong burrito. They immediately corrected this with a new burrito, which we really appreciate. We had ordered a carne asada burrito, california burrito, breakfast burrito with no meat, pollo asada burrito and a shrimp burrito. No complaints from anyone. The food itself was surprisingly good, better than half the joints you can find in San Diego. We were also extremely hungry, which definitely helps this review ;) If we ever find ourselves passing by the area again, we will definitely come back. read more

Stopped by a couple of weeks ago and had the beef and chicken rolled tacos. It was probably just the seasonings, but the chicken tasted spoiled and I didn't want to take the chance of eating it. The beef was a bit dry, but otherwise good. They did put plenty of meat in them, but if the meat might be spoiled... The chips were super greasy and barely edible. I remember I came on yelp last year and was completely blown away by the low rated reviews about La Cocina. I have been to many o' taco shops in my day and although it sounds crazy, I am willing to contest that not only is La Cocina the best mexican food in Ramona, not San Diego, or California, or the United States, but maybe the WORRRLD. If you wanna eat a burrito that wll change your world order one of the following. 1. A bean, rice, cheese, guacamole, tomato, and french fry burrito. or 2. A Pollo Asado Burrito with only cheese, tomoatos, and guacamole (fys optional on this one). ....oh and their house salsa is unrivaled. read more

I am going to start with the service. These are the nicest, most welcoming employees I have ever encountered. My son wanted to try the aguas frescas. The gentleman not only gave him a taste of all 3 flavors, he then mixed a couple varieties together for tastings. We were almost too full to order an actual drink. I was referred here because of a carne asada meat they do called Aeida(?). Sounds like i-e-da. It was the tastiest carne I have ever had. My buddy ordered the same thing and said the same as well. Not only was the carne great, the burrito packed cheese and a great pico inside too. Their chips and 3 salsas also hit the spot. My son had a breakfast burrito and loved it. Food is good but the service from the older lady with dark/grey hair is annoying. We come here a lot and spend a lot of money with this establishment and every time we ask for extra salsa it's a problem with this woman. Then we offer to pay for the extra salsa and she says "the smaller ones aren't for sale" and then we're forced to by the larger one which ends up going to waste because we can't finish it, and therefore it's a waste of money. Today my mom went into pick up our lunch order and again we asked for extra and she goes "I put some in there already" and mind you they give you two green and two red FOR TWO COMBINATION PLATES (they also only give you this when you order burritos, which is crazy). So then my mom offers to buy because she refused to give us extra and then she had the AUDACITY to say the small salsa is 75 cent. FOR THE SMALL ONE (but also, she claimed before they don't sell the small ones, so funny how her response changed). One dollar more and you can buy the large. She claimed she is just following the "rules" but every time we come here she is the ONLY one who causes an issue with extra salsa. In this day and age people spending money out on food is a luxury, so to be denied salsa when you're spending a lot of money on food is ridiculous. Not to mention salsa is the cheapest thing on the menu to make and this older woman has to cause issues over and over again for it. She makes the business look bad!! read more
