i went here with a few friends for brunch on sunday. when it came time to pay the bill, i used my atm/bank card. the waitress came back and said that they had a problem with my card and couldn't charge it, which i thought was really strange since i've never had a problem before. still, i decided to just pay my bill in cash and figured i would call my bank to see what the problem was. the next day, i logged in to my online banking and noticed that there were TWO charges from the restaurant! i called them and spoke to someone who told me that he did not deal with payment issues and that he would have his manager call me. well, i never got a call back. i called again the next day and the same guy answered. i asked him what was going on and he said that he told his manager about the problem and she said that my credit card was not charged and that i was wrong. i told him that i'm looking right at my bank statement online and i can see that there are two charges from them. he argued with me the whole time, proceeded to basically call me a liar and HUNG UP THE PHONE!!! wow, i seriously can't believe the horrible customer service that i received. the way they handled this situation was wrong and very disappointing. they didn't even want to take 5 minutes out of their day to look up their records from that day. if they had, they would have seen that my bank paid them twice for my bill! basically, i paid triple for my meal.... the only reason i gave them two stars is because the food was actually really good. i'm just so disappointed ain the way i was treated. i can't believe that the manager didn't even have the decency to call me back. i never got an apology or even an acknowledgment that maybe they did make a mistake, or just an assurance that they would look into it and try to correct the problem. i guess if you're planning on going there, pay your bill in cash! read more

I went there on Sunday with my 85 yo aunt and cousin. I first ordered the almond croissant, which was tasty but quite dense and not flaky like most French bakeries. My aunt and I each ordered a different quiche, and each one resembled something from the frozen food aisle. They were circular and VERY flat, more like a large cookie than a thick piece of quiche with a delicious crust. The WORST part of the meal was that after paying the bill, the hostess (?owner) came by THREE times in eight minutes asking if we would be leaving soon. I absolutely couldn't believe it, in part because we were planning to leave as soon as my aunt returned from the restroom. After the third time in less than ten minutes, I said, "Don't worry. We will get up and go right now." Rather than being called La Conversation, it resembled more of a McDonalds with its emphasis on very mediocre food and quick turn around time. read more

I had brunch today at this place and had really bad service. When I arrived - the hostess was warm welcoming and told me my server would be right over, but he absolutely did not come over. In fact, he didn't show up for a good 10-15 minutes. I had to ask a runner for my coffee. When he finally did show up, he was rushed. He didn't introduce himself. He didn't bring us any pastries (this restaurant offers small pastries in the place of bread). I had to ask for them on the THIRD time he came by our table. When the pastries were finally dropped off - I was told they were out of a certain kind. At this point, our server had actually switched on us randomly. Which is bad server etiquette anyway - your server is not supposed to change on you... And this new server did not introduce himself like a normal server should: "Hi I'm blah blah, I'll be taking over for blah blah who is ending his shift"... and there was no additional pastries. I also ordered honeydew... which then they later told me they ran out of. By the time we got our food we had waited a whole freakin HOUR. It was 2:00 by then and and the place was not busy. And to add real insult to injury - the food was freakin cold. At this point, I was seriously annoyed - so I asked the hostess to speak to the manager... she avoided bringing the manager over. She said "you can talk to this guy,"... some random waiter..., "He's in charge." I asked the guy if he was the manager and he said no (wtf right?), so I was like "can I please talk to the manager?" I was completely polite, I used a nice tone of voice. When the manager came over - she seemed completely confused. As if she had never been in a situation like this before. I told her our waiter came super late and our food took forever and was cold. She disagreed with me was like "oh no, our food doesn't sit out, we have runners that take it immediately.".... Oh really? So I'm liar, hu? My food and my friend's food was totally cold. The hollandaise sauce had totally filmed over. I told her she could touch it to see for herself. At that point.. she still didn't know what to do - she stammered repeatedly "well what can I do for you?.. what would you like?".... Are you serious?? You don't know what to do? You comp at least one of the meals and give us something for free... hellloo??? Have you not worked in the restaurant industry before? Are you really gonna make me ask to be comped?... I just asked her for a dessert. And I didn't even mention how they were out of certain items. What she brought us was 4 TINY pastries - like the size of ping pong balls, and then comped our drinks...and frankly - I was ok with that... I wasnt gonna complain anymore... But the REAL kicker... the REAL CHERRY ON TOP and why I decided to write this review was because at the end when she brought us our check, i had my legs on the chair next to mine and she freakin commented on it!!! SERIOUSLY - you are commented on it!!! Are you kidding me???? after you gave me Sh*t service - you are gonna make a comment about my legs????? WTF!!! .. I have never been told to ever move my legs at a restaurant before... and frankly she has no right to say anything to me after the crap service I received. The food was decent, but overpriced... and seriously the service is NOT worth it.. This restaurant is completely unprofessional and they have no idea what they are doing.. I wouldn't be surprised if the place didn't it make it past a few more years. read more

Cute restaurant in s great location. The Lox, onion and cream cheese pastry is a must try. It was the perfect flavour balance wrapped in the best puff pastry. The Ham and Gruyere quiche was to die for. This is not your pre-made and warmed in an oven type dish. The eggs were cooked just enough so they were still creamy and the gruyere added the right sweet nutty flavour to balance the ham. I subtracted 1 star because their bakery is too much of a temptation to resist. Thankfully their main course portions are so ample, I rarely have room for desert. Unless I take half home and have desert against my scale's and doctor's better judgement. Some people flock here for the stars who frequent the place. Not why I'd choose this place...I come for a menu and kitchen that never disappoints. One of the best breakfast and lunch places that has charm, great service and doesn't rush you out the door. Everybody talks about the great pumpkin pancakes. But I like more complex dishes they can cook to your precise instructions about allergies etc. The cheese they put in my omelet is real goat feta, so I don't have to choose between a cow-milk product or no cheese at all. And all the add-ins are very fresh. They can make my salad nicoise with chicken instead of fresh tuna -- and their home-made vinaigrette tastes fabulous. Fantastic salads of all kinds. -- especially the curried chicken. And their sandwiches can be made even tastier with delicious bread baked on the premises. Even a fresh and flaky brioche. How many places can offer that? They don't have hamburgers, but taste their turkey burger and you won't miss the beef or the fat. And their upscaling of mexican dishes is a revelation. Tastes like they make their own salsa and guacamole from scratch. And it's just across the street from The Gendarmerie, a spa like no other. La (or is it L.A.?) Conversation is a cross between a neighborhood favorite and a place worth traveling to from anywhere in town. read more

Very lively, good food ( I had the waffles with a side of bacon), plus great people watching. The service was very friendly, and we were not rushed from our table. i really like the location and look of this cute place. really sweet to have brunch outdoors here. the food is decent and pretty standard eggs and croissants and the like. our table was kind of ghetto though - there were nails sticking up through it from the bottom, and glue on top to try and cover them up. that could potentially be dangerous. coffee was really delish though. read more

I love this place! As soon as you sit down they bring you delicious little pastries to start out with, instead of bread like other places. The pasties include mini crossants, muffins and cookies. I've been there for breakfast many times and all of the items I got were yummy. Same with lunch, I had the monte cristo sandwich - YUMMY, and the blt wrap, also great. Love this place!!!! Where else can you get brunch near this place? Think about it... If this place didn't exist I would be eating at the kings road cafe - which is bad. I've gone to this restaurant 25 times and never had a problem parking. The crowd is very low key but very much the grown-up Hollywood types. I think the food is great. Really disappointing. We looked forward brunching here but it really didn't live up to the expectations we had. Food was not delicate, it was more of a diner that missed taste. Servers were friendly. Chocolate macadamia hearts. OMG yummy!!! If you have a sweet tooth you absolutely HAVE to drop by this place. Their food is ok but their pastries are just to die for (or to die because of if you eat too many). Parking can be tough. There's a tiny little lot in the back. Other than that there's metered parking or parking across the street along the curb on the Beverly Hills side. Just be sure to read the posted signs about hours that you're able to park on the street. read more

4.5 A childhood favorite bakery--very "frenchy," very cute inside... super authentic. For a moment, you will forget that you were in LA. Why make a trip out to Paris, when we have something quite similar. The only difference is the people out in Paris are more snootier... I love the decor... a place I still come at least once a month. Literally seconds from BH, it's on Doheny, and if you head west, you are in BH, you head east, you're in WeHo. This bakery is like no other. Their freshly baked goodies are amazing. I've tried quite a lot, and every single one of them were amazing. The food is reasonably priced, with so much to offer. Sorry, I forgot what I got the last time I was here for breakfast. Staff is amazing, very attentive but quite slow at times... Always great to stop by after a comforting meal, at least~* (for the pasteries, that is) Parking is awful, it has been awful from the 80s and it still is, and you would THINK that they would have renovated this place in some sort in providing ample parking for the locals. I came here for lunch with a friend not knowing what to expect and it really shocked me that such a cute place exisited on Doheney! We sat outside and split the goat cheese salad with potatoes! So yummy!! Perfect spot to grab a quick lunch or read a book! We didn't have time for pastries, but I will definitely dig into them next time! I ate here for a work breakfast during the week since funny enough it is one of the few restaurants in the area that is open at 7am. I had eggs and they were good. There was a funny smell in the restaurants from cleaning products which distracted me from my meal. The waiter was nice but there was nothing special about the restaurant that would make me want to come back again. read more

so maybe i'm spoiled or maybe i just didn't order the right thing but i didn't like it so much. went there yesterday with my two bosses to grab a casual lunch. the decor is definitely cute and the pastries did look pretty good but the entrees did not look anything close to spectacular nor did it taste anything close to good. i had a ahi tuna wrap, it was pretty bland. one boss had a greek salad, the other had a turkey sandwich. the greek salad was bland, it was displayed with wedges of tomatoes and some really light green (iceburg) lettuce. the server forgot the dressing...we had to ask for the dressing...the turkey sandwich was apparently not too shabby, on baguette. but seriously, nothing special. there was a guy who had on a black pokadot shirt, jeans and a hat who obviously either owned the place or worked there cuz he would go behind the counter, in and out of the kitchen, licking his pointing finger. perhaps he liked the food. i, on the other hand, was disappointed... read more

Met some girlfriends for breakfast at La Conversation last weekend and fell in love with this charming lil' place! Loved the basket of pastries they gave us, especially the mini croissants - probably the best croissants I've ever had. They have tons of different delicious-looking pastries. I tried the mini velvet cupcakes which were also good. For breakfast, I had eggs, ham and potatoes. The food was nothing special and unfortunately, the potatoes were a bit overcooked. :( Service could've been better too. But it's okay! I will be back for the nice, quaint ambiance of this place (so perfect for Sat/Sun brunch) and the delicious pastries. read more

Came here for Mother's Day brunch - only had to wait 5 minutes for a table. Very cute place, lots of Parisian atmosphere. I loved that they brought hot milk with the coffee (which was very good, even in its decaf version) and mini pastries to start while we ordered. Just had breakfast here. The atmosphere is great: really quaint and cozy. Their coffee is good and they serve it with frothy steamed cream on the side, so you can make yourself a latte of sorts. I ordered the Dante's breakfast which is the basic 2 eggs any style and side of pancakes that you can get at just about any cafe, but it's done so much better here. I would normally throw some hot sauce and maybe so ketchup on my eggs, but not here. The scrambled eggs were so buttery and flavorful that I just didn't want to mess with them. The pancakes have a subtle pumpkin flavor that sets it apart from anything you would get at IHOP. The prices are very reasonable too. Before I give this place 4 stars I wanna go back for lunch and attack the delicious looking pastry display. God, I almost licked the glass. read more

Came on a Friday for a late lunch. I was hoping for something light and slightly healthy, but when I sat down I saw French toast, pumpkin pancake, and Belgian waffle on the menu and knew I had to have one of them. I got my ice tea and my friend had a lemonade. I started sipping and not 2 minutes later, a very happy-looking and friendly waiter came by and refilled my glass even though it was only 3 sips less than before. I was like, nice service! But then I realized I spoke too soon. They never refilled my tea again. But food came within 10-15 minutes. My friend's plate looked great. He ordered an open face salmon club. My French toast looked good too, but I didn't think it tasted that great. The bread had raisins in it, which gave it a nice flavor, but it was a bit dry. The maple syrup and strawberry jam that came with it were nothing special. It was nice, but just ok. I've had better FT. Anyway, the pastries looked totally delish, but I guess on Fridays they don't give you a basket. I was going to buy some to bring home, but I completely forgot in the end. Maybe next time. Just a side note, the service wasn't too bad, unlike the other reviews I've read. But then again, it was Friday, and it wasn't that crowded at all. read more

I'm obsessed with the large size macadamia nut cake dipped in white or dark chocolate. $3 each and you've never tasted anything like it. It's also the lady owner's favorite. The cake itself has a slightly crunchy top. Yum, so delish. I'll be going back there tomorrow. read more
