The Best The absolute best dining expreience I have ever had on Long Island! Its the total package. Heres why: The Food: The food is reasonably priced for such fine French cuisine. The portions are plentiful and the flavors divine. From appetizers to desert - its a charm! The Service: The waiters are polite and professional - similar to what one would expect in an upscale major-city restaurant - but even better. Even though the waiters are not necessarily French, they certainly appear that way - providing you service one might expect in Europe. The Decor: The decor is elegant but cozy. The place is not overly spacious but provides you an environment that is upscale/friendly where you can enjoy a low key conversation with your dinner companions. Because of the class this place exudes - the barbarians tend not to appear at this locale. A good thing! Overall: We have never found such a gem in Long Island such as this! Pushy waiters. Not quite French Cuisine. I told a woman that works there that waiters are not as important as customers. Wonder if she will even dare to tell the head waiter that his staff is rude and makes a table of 4 spending $550 sorry it dined there. I dine out frequently. North Shore LI, Queens, Brooklyn and Manhattan and have never been treated like this at a slowly declining restaurant that needs all the diners it can get. This place needs to realize that the old money it is used to is dwindling. La Coquille needs to get with the times and realize that a stale Creme Brûlée doesn't cut it anymore. 2nd visit. 2nd review. After my friend called to complain about the first visit we were invited back on the house. This time there were only 4 other tables with diners so they were able to give us better attention. We received the VIP treatment. The service was impeccable. Not overbearing but never out of site. The foie gras and crabcake appys were delicious. The rack of lamb was perfectly cooked to my temp. The veal must have been good because my Bff ate it all. I must say they certainly impressed me. While I do prefer Asian cuisines, good French food is always a treat. And usually that means La Grenouille for me. But honestly, I like La Coquille better. Sure, the atmosphere in the former is beautiful. And I've seen some interesting people there. But it's a bit chi-chi for me. La Coquille, out on Northern Blvd. in Manhasset does the trick for me. The decor is fine, reserved, not over the top. But the food shines. Went out there on Mother's Day. From the onion soup, to my crab cocktail in a light mayo sauce with some kind of crunchies, the baked artichokes, and more the appetizers were nice and light. I had the veal, nicely done in a sauce with onions and little cubed bacon chunks. I don't always eat liver, but outside Cipriano's in Venice, this is some of the best I've eaten. Came with a small portion of mashed potatos and crisply done string beans and broccoli. My better half had some delicious Duck a la' Orange, crisply one and delicious. The also have a duck breast but I prefer this variation. La Coquille is known for its' duck. Others in the party had various fishes, Dover Sole and Branzino, I believe. Eaten and enjoyed. There's a dessert cart that has some nice stuff. I had the apple crisp with a smallish ball of vanilla ice cream. Was nice and warm, but not that good. I like lots of apple, and this was more like a health bar. The fruit tart was so much better. Anyway, the service was reasonably fast and quite good. It's hard to fault this place. they have a bar with an eclectic menu (sushi, I think) but I haven't tried it. Well, I don't mean to put down La Grenouille, it's great and a good place for trying to impress a date. And the food is great. But portion wise it lacks, although better than Bouley. Well, after Bouley I have to go out to pick up something more substantial to fill me up. Well, prefer Daniel anyway. And that's how I roll. Now I feel like Arby's. read more

OH god i love this place. Me and a friend decided to eat here after shopping at RF Mall. We were definitely underdressed, i was wearing a beanie hat and ripped jeans i felt so out of place and was waiting on someone to come to our table to tell us to leave. But they did not the wait staff were extremely polite and helpful. The food was amazing i got the duck and it was the best duck i'd had in a WHILE. The dining room is connected to a bar so you can come and chill out at the bar as well. However the restaurant and bar are not very big but very well decorated, the dining room is decked with gorgeous art and the ambiance is very elegant and relaxing. Also they keep the lights a little dim in here just an fyi! I would categorize this place as 'fancy'. So don't go in jeans. I wouldn't say its crazy expensive but definitely a bit of a splurge, for two people with wine and dessert we came to a little over $200 which is not bad imo. read more

You aren't rushed and when you leave you feel that you actually got what you paid for. Decided to order take out Sunday night around 4:15 PM for a family birthday for 4 adults for pick up at 5:30. We were not disappointed! Every course was superb! We had the La Coquille salad, artichoke gratinee, and soup du jour for appetizer, sole en croute, salmon, swordfish and rack of lamb for dinner and the mousse au chocolate, pumpkin cheesecake, and Napoleon cake for dessert. This was absolutely one of the WORST meals I have had in awhile with over a $600 bill with a party of 7. I would avoid the restaurant at all costs because it was quite terrible. Let me go further into detail. The Food: the escargot was terrible. Tasted like rubber. The French onion soup was salty and after tasting the "French" onion soup at a French restaurant - I knew this would go down hill fast. The rack of lamb was barely medium rare as I asked for and I could have made better lamb chops than La Coquille did! Trust me. As for the other entrees that my table had - it lacked taste and was dry. Half the table had Salmon - and it was dry as I couldn't even swallow it without having water. My Jack and Coke was mediocre - I had better. Lastly, the dessert. I had a creme brûlée which was terrible. I stress again, how does a French restaurant serve garbage? My girlfriend next to me just elaborated how disgusting her fruit tart was which consisted of mushy fruit and mediocre whipping/custard. The Service: The waiter was nice and tried to crack some jokes - which weren't funny, but hey, he tried. The wait staff could have been more attentive. This doesn't earn any extra stars in my Yelp Book! The Atmosphere: Nothing remarkable. An open room with tables and the front entrance had a bar side to its right. I will make ONE note that stuck with me the whole night - Seems like La Coquille lets anyone in these days. A mother, father, and daughter came in wearing t shirts, ripped jeans, and sneakers. The daughter was playing on her tablet during dinner. Upscale place? Absolutely not if they let people like this in to an "Upscale French Restaurant." I don't care what race you are - Have some respect and dress up for nice places. What makes you different from all the others that abide by dress code? If you can afford to eat at a place like this - buy some slacks, a dress, a pair of dress shoes, heels, whatever. Furthermore, take the damn tablet out of your kids hand and learn to be parents! Have some respect for your fellow patrons! Overall: I'll keep this short. Do not come to La Coquille unless you want to break the bank and leave with a terrible dining experience. I would give this place 0 stars if I was allowed too! STAY AWAY. There are far better restaurants on Long Island than to be eating at a place like this. I had the pleasure of going to La Coquille for an office holiday party this past week. Our group was promptly greeted by James when we arrived and we and seated in a beautiful and cozy room for our dinner. I started off with the tuna tartar japonaise, wild mushroom ravioli for the main course, and chocolate mousse for dinner. The food was was so delicious! My wife and I and another couple had dinner here last night. As usual, the food was very good, but our waiter turned us off. After he recited the typically long list of daily specials, our friend asked the price of the branzino. The waiter replied, "Two hundred and seventy dollars." Then he added, "No, madam, I don't memorize the prices". He was reading the specials from his pad, and adding the prices would have been easy. Whether he knew it or not, the waiter was echoing J. P. Morgan's remark that if you have to ask how much it costs to run a yacht, you can't afford it. We don't need that kind of snooty attitude. We arrived at 6 on a Friday night, and the lightly occupied dining room was peaceful, but by the time we left at 8 the dining room was full and very noisy. read more

Maybe I should give 3* for Long Island but for NYC, it is 2*. There is no way this place would be in business in Manhattan at this price point with the quality of service (which was sorely lacking). Food was solid good, classic French. We ate in restaurant but adjacent bar had world cup playing loudly, WHen I am paying $45 for an entree, I don't want to hear tv in the background. Service was apathetic, looking at cell ph and one kept eating in front of us and eating berries off dessert cart. Ordered some food bc mentioned table side prep but this is not the case, they flambe on opp corner of room and difficult to see. Did not acknowledge a birthday despite being mentioned at reservation and ordering dessert. We will not be back as there are plenty of other places to eat at. read more

I was excited about coming here and trying an established French place closer to home. I had a wonderful cocktail but we were rushed thru dinner. The reservation was for 8 and by 9:15 the waiter left because he "came early" that day. There was no other true waiter and that's why I realized we were being rushed. I ordered the duck breast rare and that request was completely disregarded. We ordered an espresso and then another ... Well the second one was from the bottom of the grinds like they were too lazy to make it fresh. This place is over rated if you have been to classic French restaurant in the city. I came here on New Years Eve and the place was busy and packed (as is everywhere else). The food was decent. I had the foie gras, oysters (which I thought were a bit on the skimpy side), escargot, veal and duck. The veal and duck was great! We also had a chocolate mousse for dessert which was alright, and I had a Napoleon. We also had a bottle of wine along with our meal. We have been coming here on and off for many years, for celebrations especially our wedding anniversaries. Well now that it was our 30th what was more appropriate than to come here again. At first were little hesitant since we thought the place would be dated but trust me once we arrived, it was not. We started off with 2 specialty Martinis which were made perfect. We then shared two appetizers ecargots bourguignonne and poached artichoke gratinée, both dishes were fabulous. For our entrée we had the classic half duck à l'orange and Brooke trout almondine special, once again both dishes were magnificent, by the way we also ordered as a side dish Truffled string fries, which were Out of this world. For dessert we had the Fresh Grand Mariner soufflés for two. From the service, to the food to the atmosphere this experience was a 10 and we are looking forward to coming here more often as this Restaurant is old school quality that you can not find in too many restaurants anymore. read more

This is by far the best restaurant we have tried in the area. There's a new owner and a completely renovated/expanded interior. The food easily rivals the best French in the city, and the service is attentive and professional. We had the steak, lobster risotto, ravioli and lots of appetizers. All were prepared perfectly, and the sauces never overpowered the quality of the fresh ingredients. We'll be back at every excuse to celebrate something at La Coquille! read more

Let me review this as an itemization: $$$$ beaucoup Strip mall Cuisine: Continental Tanqueray Martini $16 Veal Chatelaine (read that scallopini, small/thin pieces in a sweet sticky Sherry sauce with chestnuts, packaged), saute that all together and plate it and charge $32. Green beans (no, not hericot vert) with one little broccoli flowerette and small portion of mashed potato molded into an ovoid and plated along with the sticky veal. Waiter - yes he can recite the specials, but do NOT ask the price -- he doesn't know and sort of snarls his lip when asked. (I guess one shouldn't ask, but why not?). La Coquille is the best and perhaps last of Nassau County's "Fine Dining" restaurants. It is actually NOT a French restaurant, in the traditional sense,which is a good thing. Rather, La Coquille is a very fine, "Continental" restaurant. Sort of a survey course of European Culinary Traditions, mostly French and Italian, tweaked to American tastes. They've been doing it for close to 50 years and Nobody, does it better. Their Ceasar Salad is pitch perfect, their Oysters, baked Rockefeller style are as good as in New Orleans, their veal dishes, especially the Veal Chop Milanese style or the Veal Chatelaine, with chestnuts in a sherry sauce are some of the best dishes you will ever eat. Their seafood, Branzino etc is clearly well sourced. The service is professional "Old School" with tuxedoed staff and dishes finished table side by a Captain, who has been there 40 years. To top it all off, they bring you a dessert cart filled with the Classics like Floating Island, Napoleon, amazing Creme Brulee, etc. When was the last time you saw one of those?! The prices are not cheap but compared to NYC, where I'm from, are an absolute bargain given the quality, and service. Bonus: the wine list offers extremely well priced bottle options and top notch reds and whites at $10-12/glass! If you are a "Lawn Guyland" mook in a Jets jersey who does not own a sport coat, a loud pretentious "real Housewife of Long Island" type or someone more accustomed to $8 Groupon buffets in Flushing, perhaps this is not your place. If however you are seeking the last of the old school Gold Coast Fine Dining Establishments, get dressed up, head to Munsey Park and check out La Coquille. read more
