I was influenced & La Dinastia has been on my list since pandemic times (thanks @RighteousEats !) & the upper west side seems so far, but this restaurant is a block away from the 1/2 train at 72nd St. It's actually a very busy vibrant commercial street hub - Gray's Papaya on the corner. This restaurant sits comfortably on the middle of the block and definitely looks like it's been there for a while. I think for over 30 years? Yes I came for the fried chicken and green sauce. They have a $15.50 lunch special but ended up picking up dinner since I was finally in the area. The #12 Crackling Chicken (white meat) w/ Pork Fried Rice is $26. The portion is Very Generous! Literally 6 large pieces of chicken breast (split open thinly & battered). I made sure to ask for the green sauce & they gave me a little bag of 3 containers. It's a kind of cilantro garlic herby aoli. I always expect a kind of Mama's Empanadas (Colombian) spicy version, but this (maybe Peruvian?) will always be mayo-forward? It's tasty, but nothing *So special - better than the Chino Peruvian place in my Queens neighborhood; but idk it's mayo. For some reason they gave me a House Special Fried Rice instead of the Pork Fried Rice that comes with the order. This was excellent! (Haven't had American-style Chinese Food in years...cuz when you grow up selling quality versions of it...) Had large cubes of seared! ham, char sui (Roast Pork) & bouncy shrimp. Nice umami undertones. About the chicken - it was good, medium crispy, medium juicy, slightly brined & well made. BUT - it's Just Fried Chicken. TBH after a few bites, I wonder if they're inspired by Popeyes. The chicken meat is better than Popeyes, but overall that's what it reminded me of (& Popeyes does a good job btw). IDK - I was influenced to expect some kind of special seasoning with the chicken, maybe a Chinese salt & pepper blend? I wonder if I'd like the bone-in chicken / dark meat option more. I recommend this combo meal, would be interested in seeing how their other dishes are if I had a group to eat with. Happy to support a small business. I froze the other 3 chicken pieces for a future meal. Wonder if one of the little green sauces freezes well too. The restaurant feels really homey and was full on a 6:30 PM on a Sunday. But people didn't seem to have to wait too long. There were a few customers waiting for to-go orders alongside me at the front bar area. Happy New Year! In case you were wondering where I was after a three and a half week absence, I had to attend to some personal matters, but I am back and here to get 2026 off the mat with someplace I have never been to. Conveniently located only a short walk from the 72nd Street station on the 1/2/3, this restaurant follows the same model as La Caridad 72. Chinese/Cuban cuisine, mixed in with other dishes from South America. These are two cuisines that are integral to the human condition. Do not frown upon this combo, or you will instantly regret it. As I got here at the tail end of their lunch rush, I was given a lunch menu, so I ordered a wonton soup, with a chicken lo mein with a side of plantains. Got all that? Unfortunately, the wonton soup lacks a little here. The wontons fall apart and the soup has little character. It does come with several wontons as well as a side of crispy wonton strips, and some duck sauce, but overall it was an underwhelming soup. The duck sauce and wonton strips were a great way to set up the main dish, much like peanuts at a bar. They also allowed my stomach to reset in order to get ready for the heavy stuff. Lo mein is not heavy by any means, but combined with the plantains really created an excellent combination. The noodles are good perfectly, the chicken has tons of flavor, and the plantains are cooked to perfection with an outstanding taste and texture. I will eat these anywhere, anytime. The portion is nice too for a lunch meal. I did not feel shortchanged at all. The menu has other offerings that tried to seduce me into staying longer and having a more expensive bill. Any other time I would have caved like a 18 year old at a strip club. Thankfully I have more restraint than that, so I just asked for the check, paid, and walked out. As I speak some Spanish, I was hoping to use this skill there, but I read the room and saw that this was not the arena to do that. Oh well. There is a time and place for everything. My friend and I asked for recommendations and got the oxtail stew and fried chicken. The chicken was crispy, but a little one the darker end in terms of fry. The flavor was good too but the fried rice was tastier. It wasn't dry but didn't taste too oily. The oxtail stew was flavorful and the side serving of rice and beans was huge! My brother ordered the hot n sour soup and oxtails with the yellow rice and beans. The good: service was good and the owner, at least I think he's the owner, is super nice. The portions are very big, enough to share. I tasted my brothers oxtails and it was decent. My order of hot and sour soup turned out to be wonton soup, but I was OK with that. I did not ask to return it and my rating is not based on the mistake, but on the flavor of the soup. The cup of coffee was really good. Served latte style. The not so good: My stewed chicken. It was like a half chicken and so a big portion. It went to waste as not only was I full, but it wasn't tasty and I only managed to eat a leg and a small piece of the breast. It was bland and the chicken tasted like it needed to be rinsed with vinegar. It had an odd chicken taste. The potato's were tasteless because to have good potatos, it has pickup the flavor from the stew. The wonton soup was not good. I was very hungry so I threw in those crunchy bad for you things that they put on the table to munch on and ate it with what I think was cabage in the soup. The wontons did not taste fresh, were hard and did not taste like pork or chicken at all. The second one was the same so the soup was not eaten. The rice did not have flavor. It was a huge portion of about 3 cups. That's too much for one person. I threw beans on a small 1/2 cup portion of rice and ate it that way. The beans: They were good. Had the whole cup. Left most of my food and felt bad leaving it. Especially since my brother was paying for it. He wipes his plate clean whether it's good or not. On my first visit I got the Chicken Crackling that they are known for. Very crunchy but not at all greasy chunks of white meat chicken with a nice cilantro dipping sauce. I paid the 1.25 up-charge for the pork fried rice and that was a great decision as this is some of the best fried rice ive ever had. Big,tasty chunks of pork throughout. On my second visit last week I opted for the pepper steak lunch and again a solid winner. Great pieces of tender steak,peppers and onions that were in that hard to reach zone of not being hard or mush and the sauce is so freaking good,I was dragging that amazing rice through it. They also give you bread and butter which I have never experienced in a Chinese restaurant tho i guess its more of a Chinese/Latin fusion. The place is true neighborhood. When I was there the other diners all knew the owner (Mike) and he was very friendly with them. The waitress is very sweet. Having visited Chinatowns in Central and South America, including Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Peru, and Brazil, as well as fascinated by the Chinese diaspora in these geographies, I was excited to try the Latin-Chinese food at La Dinastia. Indeed, our main waiter informed us that he was born in Paraguay to Chinese parents and later only learned Chinese when he moved to the US. The menu seems to have solid Chinese-American favorites as well as Latin American classics, with some fusion, the most obvious of which was the combination with Chinese-styled fried rice or Latin American rice and plantains. We thoroughly enjoyed the lunch specials and dessert at La Dinastia. We ordered the shrimp with lobster sauce with yellow rice, chop suey with roast pork and Moro (black beans and rice), and chicken lo mein with plantains. Of the three entrees, I would say the chop suey to me was the weakest. The roast pork is definitely not as flavorful and tender as the Cantonese roast pork one might find in a Chinatown restaurant. The lo mein was good, but also didn't have that smokiness I've come to expect from the wok (but also wasn't that oily). The plantains were very yummy. Our favorite was the shrimp with lobster sauce, since the shrimp was tender; the light sauce paired well with the yellow rice. For dessert we ordered the flan, which was a scrumptious end to our meal. Overall, the service was excellent and attentive. A must-visit spot. The menu gives lots of options, but the go-to is ALWAYS the boneless crackling chicken. Their green sauce is delicious, not spicy though. The Chicken Crackling was delicious and lived up to the hype. Super crispy and extremely tasty with the green sauce (creamy and tangy- what is in this?!). The Eggplant in Garlic sauce was well seasoned and super saucy, if a bit salty. It went really well over the side of rice it comes with. The Chicken Lo Mein was fine, nothing remarkable. Service was a bit slow, but they were also busy. This is one of my favorite restaurants in the city! I'm obsessed with their crackling chicken with the green sauce. Squeeze some lemon on top and it's perfect. I have to order it every visit. On the last visit, we tried the oxtail soup, eggplant, noodles (for long life), crackling chicken and all the various sides like beans and rice. Stop by for their lunch specials offered Mon-Sat. I, like a lot of people here it seems, tried out La Dinastia after seeing it on Instagram. Our party of four stopped by just before 2 on a Sunday and the place was pretty full. We decided to order a bunch of things to share: Boneless chicken crackling with house special fried rice - this is their most popular dish. The chicken wasn't dry but there was a lot of breading on it. Fried rice wasn't anything amazing Chicken with rice (Dominican style) - this is definitely not Dominican style. It was basically just yellow rice with leftover pieces of sliced chicken breast (it had that old chicken taste), topped with peas. We also ordered a side of plantains to go with it and that was probably the only thing good about this dish Lomo beef - I thought this would be more Latin style but it was more like Chinese pepper steak. It's beef sautéed with peppers, onions, tomatoes, soggy French fries (very weird - like did they just have this leftover and decided to throw it in there?) in a sweet and sour sauce. Though it wasn't what I was expecting, this dish was actually pretty good. Definitely the best of the bunch, but also SUPER oily Sorry to say but overall, this place was overrated. The average cost of a dish here is $20-$25. Yes, they give big portions but when the food is meh, you don't even want it all.
