Food: The food is delicious here! I've tried similar Peruvian-Chinese restaurants in the city which are very average, but I was pleasantly surprised by Flor de Mayo for its flavors and quality of the food. We tried the mixed ceviche (squid, fish, octopus), 1/2 fried chicken with plantains, and 1/2 rotisserie chicken with fried rice. I would highly recommend all three of these dishes. The ceviche was fresh, simple, and very refreshing; it's a small portion and meant to be shared as an appetizer. Both types of chickens were very flavorful and moist. I don't normally like plantains, but the plantains here were perfectly cooked, lightly fried, and sweet. I have been recommending this place to family and friends and can't wait to go back myself. Service: Service was excellent. Staff were so friendly and welcoming. Our water was filled constantly without having to ask them. Multiple staff members came by throughout the meal to ask us if we needed anything. Ambiance: The restaurant is a good size with tables for both small and large groups. Surprisingly was able to walk in (wait was about 15 mins) with a party of 12 on a warm Sunday night. I don't know how they did it, but service was great and drinks were delicious! I was not super impressed by my food, however. I 'built my own dish' which came with a side of white rice. It truthfully didn't have any flavor, but I did eat it cause I paid so I'm gonna eat, y'know? I did try a little of someone else's chicken tenders and those were actually pretty good. From my understanding, they have a couple of locations and I was told that the food is very good. It is very possible that I ordered the wrong thing, but just beware. Stopped by Flor de Mayo for lunch and had a mixed start - the maitre d' wasn't the most welcoming, though it may have been an off moment. Once we were seated, the experience completely turned around and service was excellent - attentive and friendly. When I mentioned that I used to come in college, the server seemed very excited. We ordered two lunch specials: fried pork chop and roasted chicken both served with salad and fries and yellow rice, plus tallarin verde with beef. The pork chop was a bit too salty for me, but my friend really enjoyed how crispy it was. The roasted chicken was a standout for me, especially the sauce. My son loved the yellow rice so much he ignored the fries! Overall, there was something for everyone at the table. Tried Flor de Mayo in Manhattan and I have mixed feelings--but mostly good! Let me start with the food because WOW. I ordered the steak medium and it was absolutely phenomenal. So flavorful, cooked perfectly, and honestly one of the best steaks I've had in a while. I usually never finish my food, but this time? I cleaned my plate That says everything. My friends ordered different dishes and everyone was really happy with their food too. Everything came out fresh, hot, and well-seasoned. Definitely a place that delivers when it comes to the food. Now... the drinks We ordered what they call a "nutcracker," and I'm not even going to sugarcoat it--it was one of the nastiest drinks I've ever had. We ordered the Half chicken with plantains, Lomo saltado & Pepper chicken with fried rice. - The half chicken was delicious - the meat was juicy & fat nicely rendered so the skin was thin and a little crispy, but it was pretty salty, especially in areas like the wings, where its not that meaty. At the time there was no green sauce (!!) but was still overall delish! - The lomo saltado was my favorite of the day - perfectly seasoned and I love when the veggies still have their bite and not overcooked. the fries were still crispy when it came to the table but eventually softened soaking up the sauce. Absolutely delish and would definitely get again - The pepper chicken was not what i expected - the meat was tender but I expected it to be a spicy green pepper but the flavor was of green bell pepper. No complaints - was tender and well seasoned - just not what i expected. The star of this plate though, was the pork fried rice. I can't visit the Upper West Side without stopping by Flor De Mayo -- it's been my go-to for nearly 30 years! Their Pollo a la Brasa is always juicy and flavorful, and I always pair it with the House Special Fried Rice. My food came out in about five minutes, and the service was just as great as always. I stopped by around 2 p.m. on 11/1/25, and it wasn't too crowded. The noise level was low, making it a nice, relaxed lunch. My server, David, was super friendly and attentive. Fun fact -- they serve 7UP! I don't know any other restaurant in the NYC area that does. Most places only have Sprite, but I'm a 7UP fan all the way. And if you didn't know, Flor De Mayo actually created the Nutcracker cocktail (Don Q 151, Southern Comfort, and Disaronno) -- it was even featured in The New York Times! I am amazed at how consistent this place is with the quality of service and food. The amount of people who come here speaks highly of how good the food is. I recommend calling if you plan on coming in a large group because everytime I've come here I've had to wait. The wait is worth it 100%. I came with my friends and as usual we enjoyed our drinks and our food but I will say this isn't the type of place where you sit around and talk without ordering anything. It's super fast pace and they're always trying to get everyone in and out (no rush though) because of how high the demand is. The servers are great. I barely know sugar from salt and my more attentive Yelp readers have caught on, realizing that I might spend three sentences on Buzz Bin music to reach a full paragraph. (Don't miss Everclear this fall celebrating the 30th anniversary of Sparkle and Fade). More to the point, there are some secret ingredients in this chicken. Nutmeg maybe? Like I said I'm not a food expert, just someone who wants to write two sentences about every restaurant in America or at least the greater tri-state American. But this is an impressive chicken interiors, not one of those situations where it's all about the skin. The sauce, sort of like pico de gallo, is stellar. It works well with the mixed fried rice. I ordered the Lomo Saltado with fried egg on top, and a side of Special Fried Rice. At first the dish came without the egg, but that was quickly fixed. The Lomo Saltado was thick cut steak perfectly seared, mixed with onion, tomato, as well as nicely crisp French fries in a yummy savory sauce. The steak was tender and well seasoned, while the veggies had a satisfying crunch. Fried Rice was quite tasty, chock full of shrimp, pork, ham, bean sprouts, onion, and scallions. All the ingredients combined well together. Service was pretty good. Our waiter was friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. Prices were decent. I have only had Peruvian twice and hated it the first time. This place made up for what I had the first time. The service was so quick and efficient and everything was brought out rather quickly. I had the Lomo Saltado and it was amazing. They have a huge drink selection and I went for the Mai Tai, perhaps not the best pairing for my meal but the drink itself was so good. There is almost always a packed house for both lunch and dinner, but there are plenty of seats evenly spread out so you're not on top of anyone. read more

Came here after seeing a show for my cousins birthday. I tried some fried Chorizo Yuca balls, chicken a la carte, mofongo with pork, and ropa vieja. I saw everyone ordering nutcrackers to drink, so I had to try. It was good, reminded me of amaretto sour. The yuca balls had a nice crunch to it. It was soft and warm inside. The chicken was good, I just wish the mojito sauce was more garlicky. The mofongo would have been better if the pork was mixed in. Good food, good time, great service. Seriously, everything was served with a smile. Servers were attentive and responsive with just the right balance of distance and watchful anticipation. They didn't hesitate to make menu suggestions or offer a useful opinion when asked. Drinks were a bit sweet for my taste but still delicious and pretty! The table are formica, the napkins crappy paper, the space a little cramped. All that said, this is the highest value restaurant I've ever been to. The roasted chicken is drippingly moist (apologies to El Maricon, but you're not cutting it). the plantains perfectly cooked, and I wish I knew what they did to their black beans... Although this restaurant has been around a long time, there are several other that are more authentic Chinese/Peruvian/Cuban restaurants on the Upper West Side. The food here is very ordinary and not especially tasty. Plus, the place is not especially attractive. Better choices are on West 72nd Street: Dynastia or La Caridad 72. read more
