When I am craving Mexican pastries my go to will always be La Esperanza bakery. Just like the their restaurant portion of the building the bakery line is just as long, but moves rather fast. They have a wide variety of pastries, cakes, coffee and jello and so much more. The atmosphere is pretty basic as there is no dining area just order and go which is fine. Deep in the heart of West Sac in a rundown strip mall is this bakery. Don't be fooled with its humble surroundings-Whats inside is what counts. There was a long line to get the bread. They had various people working the counter getting the bread. They were efficient and nice. We went crazy and got lots of bread for 2 people!! It smelled fresh bake in there and they told me that they are getting fresh bread all day throughout the day. Its so affordable and sugary good. Does La Esperanza need another review at this point? No. We all know it's great. Still, I must shout from the rooftops how much I love their pastries! The chocolate muffin in particular makes me feel like a happy little kid! And it gets chocolate all over my face and hands like a kid too! It costs $2.50 for one as of JUNE 2025. They also make a cheesecake slice, and a variation on the cheesecake slice that is half chocolate cake. That costs $4.50 I think. Recently, I've been craving pastel de tres leches. But, like, some real, good, authentic pastel de tres leches. (I tried getting a slice from Food 4 Less, but it didn't hit the spot.) For anyone who may not know, 'pastel de tres leches' is a cake made with sweetened, condensed, and regular milk. 'Pastel' means 'cake,' and 'tres leches' means 'three milks.' I remembered my ex always saying (in Spanish) that if I wanted some *real* pastel de tres leches, I should go try that bakery down the street from Caballo Blanco. So, eighteen years later, with the help of Yelp, Google, and Google Maps, I determined that this was probably the *legit* bakery in question. (It's right around the corner from Caballo Blanco, and has been open for over 50 years.) When I first walked into the bakery, there was a long line, but it moved quickly. At first, when I looked around, I didn't see any cake, but, I still wanted to try the place out. I decided to order an apple turnover and a slice of pineapple upside down bread. As I was getting ready to pay, I noticed a few slices of cake in a small fridge behind the cashier. "Is that pastel de tres leches?" "That cake right there? Yeah, that's pastel de tres leches." "I'll take a slice of that too, please." The slice of pastel was pretty big. On top of the few bites that I had in the parking lot, it was also my breakfast for the next two days. It was everything that pastel de tres leches should be. It tasted like fresh ingredients, and the fruit in it was actually good, unlike the super sugary jellies that some of the grocery stores use. One of the largest bakeries I've been to! Unfortunately I wasn't a fan of the conchas though. The pink frosting on top was a very light pink - different than what I'm usually used to. So it did taste a little funny to me. My husband loves the horn, and he said it was also just alright. However, they had an awesome peanut platter with different flavored peanuts - spicy, Japanese peanuts, green peanuts, and regular peanuts. My hubby enjoyed those for sure! The service was very fast! There are plenty employees to help those who want to get a pan de dulce. The store itself is very spacious and there have plenty of space for more available snacks. I visited this bakery yesterday and found it quite popular, with a line stretching out the door. The space is a bit small and uncomfortably warm, but the real highlight here is the baked goods--the bread is absolutely delicious! However, I had some issues with customer service that I believe need addressing. The woman taking my order seemed snarky and repeatedly acted as though she didn't understand which breads I was asking about....It would be helpful if they had names labeled next to the breads, as there are many varieties..even when I would state the name.. said I was not pointing correctly.. and when I was pointing at the case Additionally, during checkout, I faced some frustration as she kept telling me to use tap option.. and repeatedly told her my card does not function with tap.. and did not listen.. after she finally realized I was right... If you decide to visit, be prepared for a wait, as it can take a while to get through the line. That said, the quality of the bread makes it worth the trip. I was looking for some sweet treats for a school party and ended up getting a couple dozen churros and some pan dulce. The service at la Esperanza bakery was excellent. There was a line of people out the door when I arrived, but within a few minutes it was my turn. I pointed out my selections, a couple dozen churros for the kids and some pan dulce for the grown ups, which were carefully boxed up for me. The churros and baked goods were super fresh as I could feel their warmth radiate through the boxes when I picked them up. I've been meaning to try this place for years but never drove out here. Awesome selection of pastries and they get bought up early so plan ahead. I still got some good ones, a huge chocolate chip cookie which has that authentic cane sugar used in Mexican baking, a couple pastries I think, maybe filled empanadas or something...I don't know it was all just sweet and good. The cinnamon roll wasn't the best but maybe if it were heated it would be. Doesn't matter. Average prices for a bakery but specialty items only at this location. Back in the day this was my first review ever on Yelp, with my old Yelp account. Back then i gave it 5 stars, and even now im still rocking wit the 5. Been coming here since I was knee high, coming here craving a puerquito (ginger bread piggy) or empanada de calabaza (pumpkin empanada) those were my favorite. As an adult i love coming here for the elotes (a bread that looks like corn covered in sugar). This place has really expanded from their baked good to the whole establishment. The whole little strip is owned by the same owner. In one corner they sell pan dulce and lots of sweets, the middle store they sell groceries and in the other end of the strip they sell great food. This whole location is great! Enough bout that lets focus on this gem, they have every thing, pan dulce, tres leches cake (3 milks cake) chips, spices, condiments, tostada shells, THE BEST TOSTADAS SHELLS if i made so add. They also have piñatas, refreshments and other knick knacks. I constantly come here because i love the baked goods and the service is great, one thing I would say is that parking is hard to find specially on the weekends. I go to the Mexican grocery store connected to this bakery from time to time and I haven't stepped foot into this bakery until now. Upon entering the place I saw a bunch of pretty cakes available for purchase; perfect if you need a birthday cake in a pinch. Further into the small bakery there were a variety of treats on display. I got a cinnamon roll, a custard donut, a churro, an open-faced cheese Danish pastry, and a pineapple cheese Danish pastry (hmm....for a Mexican bakery I didn't get much Mexican baked goods I just realized, woops. Many of the other customers were here mainly for bolillos). My favorite out of the bunch is the cinnamon roll. It's not the best tasting cinnamon roll that I've had, but I liked how it maintained its softness for a few days. Warning though: it has a bunch of raisins in it.....not recommended for raisin anti-fans. The custard donut is massive; I ended up portioning it off into 3 messy pieces. The donut part was pillow-soft and not too sweet.....just how I like it. The custard would've been the highlight if it didn't have a noticeable imitation-vanilla aftertaste. The churro is not the churro that I'm used to; not crispy, a bit chewy. I kinda cheated and popped it into my air fryer.....it worked out alright. The Danish pastries were decent. Nothing to write home about. A slight step up from Svenhard's Danish pastries (you know, those iconic grocery-store ones). I expected my haul to easily come out to over $20 (I guess I'm too used to paying bougie Sac bakery prices). Was pleasantly surprised that the items came out to be about $2 each. Not too shabby at all for a $10-and-change haul. Nice little neighborhood bakery overall.
