This bakery is fantastic, and it's another one of those Tucson gems that I cannot believe I am only stumbling across now. My boyfriend and I stumbled here one afternoon after craving pastries. It took us a little while to find since it is tucked away in the market. The construction downtown also made it difficult to navigate the road blocks, but we eventually made it here. The pastries are all fresh and smell delicious. We always have a tough time picking out what we want. Usually we buy a lot of the conchas to eat for breakfast. They have a wide variety of empanadas, custard-filled pastries, and other breads. I really like the one filled with French custard, and this other kind that has an almond paste inside. If I could, I would try them all! They are absolutely delicious. I really hope the new streetcar brings in more visitors to La Estrella Bakery. read more

Yum! I bought a wide selection of treats for a party I was going to. Crossed my fingers everything would be tasty cause I wasn't able to sample each type, had to settle for trying just the apricot chimmy and the pineapple empanada. Almost all the pastry was gone by the end of the party and the consensus was "excellent." I can honestly say I am sad I didn't know about this bakery sooner. All the times I have been to Seis and Agustin Kitchen and not once had I been by La Estrella. Fortunately, I now know it's very much real and by god the best damn donut you'll ever have! Yes they're known for their sweetbread and yes theirs is as authentic as it gets but their donuts! This is a wonderful little bakery located in the Mercado St. Augustine. We love the peaceful atmosphere of the Mercado and this is one of our favorite places here. We've tried the spinach and the chipotle tortillas, as well as many of the pastries. They are all fresh and delicious and you can find some items here that are hard to find in most bakeries, like coyotas. Most items are traditional Mexican pastries but they have doughnuts too. I have come here a couple of times and I always leave satisfied. First of all, they have the absolute best donuts in Tucson. The texture of the donuts is like no other - absolute perfection. The donuts come in a regular size and a mini version for when you just want a small bite. They also have a great selection of Mexican sweets such as tri-colored cookies, jam-filled empanadas, pig-shaped cookies, conchas and more. The pig cookies are amazing! They are so plump, soft, and not too sweet. In addition to having arguably the best baked goods in town, their prices are so cheap! La Estrella is the best bakery ever. I love going for a sweet pumpkin empanada after hiking Tumamoc Hill. This location is in the Mercado San Agustin which is just a beautiful market place. The selection, taste, and price are unbeatable. Worth every calorie, let me tell ya! I haven't tried yet their tortillas because I have been suckered into way too many sweet treats! Last I went, I didn't see any Bizcochitos, but other than that...all my favorite Mexican treats were there! A must go! read more

Terrible service. My mother and I walked in with the intention to buy some bread. The bakery still had 20 minutes left to close so there was enough time for the grouchy woman to assist us. She did not greet us nor smiled when we walked in. She did not ask how she could help us. As soon as she looked at my mother she rolled her eyes and told us to go to a different location because the other location had "better bread". We left and we have no intention to ever return. Ahhhh, who doesn't love an empanada or cochitos during the day? This is one of my favorite Mexican bakeries in Tucson. Their pastries are always fresh and sometimes you can even catch them fresh from the oven warm! The prices are super cheap and it's easy to get half a dozen different pastries and still be under $5. The only downside is they do close at 6:00pm during the week, as I sadly found out tonight. Instead I walk from home or work to the new San Agustin Mercado to get a giant pink box of fresh baked goods. I love the chocolate dipped coconut cookies and the Mexican wedding cookies. Great, locally-owned and -operated bakeries like these are hard to come by. Even though this one is smaller than the South Tucson original, they manage to pack in tens and tens of incredible baked goods typical of the border region. American classics like the bear claw are great, but my favorite are the conchas and the empandas de calabaza. The truth is that each time I go there I get something new and love it. La Estrella has the BEST tortillas!!! They taste just like Nana's :) They have two unique flavors in addition to the originals, a Chipotle as well as Spinach. My friend and I tried the Spinach flavored one's and we were blown away. The flavors are explosive yet subtle enough that they keep the heart warming flavor of an original tortilla in tact. The tortillas were freshly made, still warm in the bag with condensation and the staff are warm and inviting. I highly recommend La Estrella as well as their tortillas. read more

I just adore this little shop! Cookies are always super tasty. I love the sugar cookies and the banderas are always perfectly soft. Try the tamales and tortillas if you haven't. The classic tortillas are wonderful and I tried the spinach version this week. She gave me good advice on how to cook with them. So I added a bit of Monterrey jack cheese and some salsa for a fab quesadilla. it's always the same woman working there and she's efficient, friendly, and polite. Love this place! I usually stop by and grab a few cookies before I head over to Blu or Augustin Kitchen since they close at 6 I'd miss dessert if I waited until after dinner to buy them :-) read more
