I live in CA but this bakery makes me want to drive all the way to Tucson every day. Went here while visiting a week ago and this is the best place for conchas, the white shell looking Mexican bread. And I have been to many many MANY Mexican bakeries. In CA and AZ. They make a traditional kind and a sweeter vanilla kind and I almost died when I tried the sweet vanilla concha. BEST I EVER HAD. Don't care what anyone says. I have gone to this bakery since the day the Mercado opened. It is the best and freshest bakery around! Hot off the stove tortillas and hot tamales. And BONUS... The coffee shop is next door. Now I can have a glaze donut or empanada with my Chai Latte. read more

This is an interesting little place. It's small. And it's busy. Really busy. The pastries look amazing and they taste amazing too! The cinnamon cookies are to die for! They are the flakey, buttery, melt in your mouth kinda wonderful! The problem is: The customer service. Unlike most panderias where you pick up a tray on the way in and serve yourself; this bakery has people behind the counter putting the pastries in a bag as you point out which ones you want. The two young gals behind counter could have cared less. The one girl even sold my friend a cookie- which was not the one my friend wanted. When my friend took it back inside, she told the girl and asked for the one she had originally chosen. The girl PUT the first cooking back in the case for other people to choose!! WHAT?? How did she know my friend didn't touch it? My friend is clean but what about the next person?? This is a health hazard- not sure the State would be happy about this. And a big turn off to me! read more

This little bakery is has a lot of tasty treats for such a small space. All the sweet delicacies offered are a welcome treat to the tastebuds. I suggest you get a marranito (pig-shaped cookie), or a stuffed empanada or two. A must-see if you find yourself in the mercado area. read more

We live on the far east side of Tucson and the best Mexican bakeries are located in the South and West parts of our city. La Estrella is our go to destination. They have two locations and this visit we were at their Mercado store. I usually show up with Ziplock bags to bag our treats. Why? Because they freeze so well. When we get home I can pop them into the freezer. You can always call ahead and place an order and it will be ready when you arrive. If you have kids in school and it's your day to provide snacks, La Estrella makes delicious mini empanadas and cochitos. The kids love them. They also sell doughnuts and freshly made tortillas. read more

My family and I have been coming here for a couple years now and we love it. They always have a wide selection of pastries to choose from. I just tried the "Mexican Cannoli" and it was delicious. It's my number 1 favorite place to go to get local treats and support a local business. All the workers are are always lovely. read more

First time coming to this bakery since it was originally El Rio Bakery. La Estrella did not disappoint! We got some pumpkin empanadas which were delicious, the dough to pumpkin filling ratio was perfect! We also had pan de huevo it was soft and tasty. The ladies that were working there were super nice and efficient. We got in and out quickly! We will definitely be back! read more

Mexican Pastries, where have you been all my life?!?!?!? Clearly hiding out at Mercado San Agustin. I love this bakery. All items are baked fresh daily and there are a huge variety of options that are super affordable and delicious. The empanadas are to die for! The fan favorite seems to be the pineapple, but I love the pumpkin and mango ones. I've also never tried sweet breads before, but I love the ones with the stripe of pink in them. They aren't too sweet, but go perfectly with some coffee or tea! In terms of price, this bakery is so affordable. I bought a dozen pastries to bring into work plus one extra for myself and it cost a whopping total of $7.40, can't get any better than that! The staff are also very nice and helpful. I will miss this place greatly! Though I'm glad it's not nearby, otherwise I would be gaining 23591284719287lbs each week. Definitely a spot to check out! read more

Rude rude RUDE. and this is my barrio. I was raised to be polite and respectful and definitely when you are asking for someone's business you don't act so rudely. If you're already at the Mercado, you've got to stop in and treat yourself to a delicious cookie or pastry from La Estrella. The thing that I love about this style of baked good is that they are not super sweet. The sweetness is subtle and rich. Pairs well with any coffee drink from Stella Java, also located in the Mercado. La Estrella's tortillas have always been some of my favorite. Pick up a dozen to enjoy at home later. A dozen cookies will run you around $9. read more

After a nice dinner, I wanted a treat along with something for the next days breakfast. We ended up walking out with more than we planned and we were happy to do it. We left with Bear Claws, Fruit filled Empanadas, Sugar Twisted, Sugar Cookies and the best thing was the Marrinitos (Ginger, Pig Shaped Cookies). Everything was wonderful, simply wonderful! La Estrella Bakery is another gem within the Mercado San Agustin! This is actually my favorite place in town for pastries, for a lot of reasons. And not just because of the delicious aroma that surrounds you while you're in the shop! That does help, though! First of all, their selection is vast. They have tons of different types of traditional Mexican pastries. Churros, pan dulce, donuts, empanadas, etc. They also have stuff like typical sugar cookies and fresh tortillas. There really should be something for just about everyone here to enjoy. Everything is made fresh daily, and you can definitely tell. Everything is always super soft and moist. And delectable. They are different from typical American pastries, though. We Americans like sweet, sweet, sweet goodies. I've never had an authentic foreign dessert that has been as sweet as ours can be. La Estrella is very typical with most of their pastries as other foreign desserts: they're just not as sweet. And they don't need to be. When the sugar is scaled back, you can actually taste other flavors! And the flavors in their desserts are yummy! My favorite item so far has been either the pan dulce or the regular glazed donut. I really love the donut! The glaze is ooey and gooey, and it provides the right amount of sweetness for it. The cake itself isn't so sweet, but it is rich with cakey flavor. They've always been soft and just scrumptious! The churros are very good, too, and they have a lot of different fillings for them and the empanadas. The sugar cookie was large and tasty as well! There's not been an item that we've gotten here that hasn't been good. The prices are absolutely ridiculous! Super, super, super cheap. Like, no one can come close to these prices. I don't even know how they make money. I would gladly pay double what they charge for the quality and quantity (size) that they provide. The staff has always been friendly enough, maybe not overly so, but that's fine. The atmosphere of the area is awesome. The mercado is such a nice place, whether you're just picking up pastries to go, or sitting down in the courtyard to eat your snack. I wish the shops inside had air conditioning (or put it on) during the summer months, though. Overall, La Estrella Bakery is a must-try for everyone! In terms of Mexican bakeries, I don't think it gets much better than La Estrella. read more

Cute little bakery with traditional Mexican pastries and baked goods. Really fun marketplace location. You cannot beat the price, so this is a great place to try new sweet treats if you're not familiar with Mexican pastries! Some of the cookies/pastries did not save well to eat the next day, so I would definitely recommend enjoying them while they're fresh and delicious. read more

I L-O-V-E this bakery..... I bought 5 pastries here the other day, and to my surprise it was less than $5.00. Normally I don't argue when someone charges me so little that I want to pay more.. but seriously I wanted to give the lady more $.. because their baked goods are so amazing here that I would be more than willing to pony up more cash to support this business. Oh well, I guess that means I have to come here more often... haha everything is amazing here.. seriously but my favorite has to be the creme filled buns.. and their standard pan dulce (a package of 6 is $2.00) As soon as you get a chance to come check Estrella out remember to RUN not walk over here! read more

Still awesome. Stopped by to get goodies for a Cinco de Mayo/ Derby party. They have some wonderful churro's with different fillings. The sweet breads are yummy... but my favorite is still their empanada's. So freaking good. And the women behind the counter are very friendly. 12 churros, 12 mixed sweet bread/pastries. $19.50. An amazing bakery with that Mexican touch. This is one of the few places that has "Pan de Muerto" as well as "Calaveritas" near the All Saints festival. The taste is good, but I still think is a bit far from what I'm used to eat in Mexico. Be sure to give it a try if you are ever around. Is near the SunLink station, which make it an easy ride from downtown. read more

Lots of Mexican pastry goodies. The concha is great - I had the vanilla and it was slightly sweet. The star of what I got was the glazed donut - I know it sounds simple, but it's vegan and really amazing - it has some nice substance, soft but pillowy with a nice chew and not overly sweet. I wish I got a dozen of these. They make fresh tortillas - piping hot and very affordable 3-3.50 per dozen depending on what type you got... I got the spinach kind! I highly recommend a stop in if you are around Mercado and definitely get a donut read more

This location is so wonderful and horribly tempting. I am at the Mercado a lot and every time I go I have to stop in for some FRESH tortillas. The pastries are delicious and that is the most tempting part. Everything is always the freshest it can possibly be. The staff is always friendly, and the shop is clean and cute. You can't beat there Pumpkin Empanadas. The best!!! Stop by early and get them warm out of the oven. Plus they have lots of other delicious flavors and pastries. Now they have three locations in Tucson. The most recent is right off I-10 on Grande, between St. Marys and Speedway - easy in, easy out. read more

I have been to both locations and I really love La Estrella. The tortillas are some of the best I have ever eaten. They are almost always warm which makes me believe they are being made fresh all the time. The pastries are wonderful. But surprisingly the best thing is their Menudo. I love their white menudo. The only problem is they sell out by 1pm most weekends. read more

Their donuts are wonderful and you could tell that they're freshly made. The service was great and was told it was a family owned restaurant. The ambience was chill and had some seating area areas one can enjoy. Will be back to try their chicken items.

Also, the bathrooms are located all the way in the back, and there isn't enough signage to guide you there easily. It is very small so keep that in mind. Their outside area is great. If there's an event at the University you might not be able to get a seat, so just have a plan b for that. I also love the grocery area. They have some items here that you can't find anywhere else in town, such as specialty chocolates and certain brands and flavors of ice cream. They also have some basics like produce and meat. It's worth a visit and you can walk to it from both the 4th avenue area as well as the main gate area.
