My favorite are their empanadas - they come in a variety of fruit filled options. I've had their apple, mango, pineapple, and pumpkin which are all so good for different reasons; it's hard to choose that I end up with an assortment depending on my mood so recommend trying them all! They're great for breakfast, a snack, or dessert. At our last visit, we had a slice of their cherry and coconut cake which was so moist, light, and not too sweet. It's a well-known Tucson fact that if you don't stop in at La Estrella Bakery on your trip to the Mercado, it means you didn't REALLY go to the Mercado. It's a must! La Estrella's donuts and pan dulces are second to none. Their selection varies, but they always have an array of donuts, conchas, filled pastries (think fruit turnovers, twists, and empanadas), and cookies. You can, of course, buy items individually or fill a box with a variety of their treats. Along with their sweet offerings, they also carry savory baked goods including bread, biscuits, and tortillas. They have a wide selection of fresh baked items all very fresh and delicious. They have 2 different size flour tortillas which are always fresh and tasty. If you think there's no difference between tortillas you are sadly mistaken. These are great. I urge you to try them and compare. In mho you will be hard pressed to find any better. A drink case with a selection of drinks finishes off this little bakery. While you're there pick up a great cup of coffee next door. Have lunch at one of the restaurants at the plaza. This is one of my favorite bakeries in town. With the kids on spring break I decided to take them to get a little treat and to kill some time. We made a stop by presta for a latte and then headed over to la Estrella. They have the usual American things like donuts, but I love their empanadas, pan Dulce's and other traditional Mexican cookies and pastries. They also have fresh tortillas that are delicious. Everything is fresh, delicious and super inexpensive. The staff are always friendly and patient as we repeatedly point and ask' "What is that?" One thing I didn't like was that things were not labeled and I had no idea of prices of things until I rang up. The good thing is all the prices are quite low so you don't have to worry about breaking the bank. My favorite was the cherry empanada. My husband liked the mango empanada the best. La Estrella is just the cutest little Mexican bakery in the Mercado. There are so many options to choose from and everything is so colorful. I had a hard time deciding so I went for the standard concha. I can't remember the exact price, but it was less than a dollar, which was a surprise to me. The bread was soft, sweet, and went very well with the coffee I got next door at Presta. The cookie topping offered a nice contrast to the pillowy bread underneath. I run in this area on the weekends early in the morning and the smell of fresh donuts is always a welcome wake up call. This bakery is located right in the Mercado on Congress. There's a beautiful open courtyard. Outside of the bakery is a great spot for hipster coffee and tea. Lots of street and gravel parking available. Estrella has hands down the best donuts I've had in Tucson. Dare I say, better than Krispy Kreme! If you like cake donuts then just stop reading now. This is not the donut for you. The dough was dense yet fluffy so that you could see hundreds of delicate air pockets in the bite. It was soft, yeasty and yellow (possibly cake flour in the mix?) I aIways judge a donut by its bite. My ideal donut is like a delicious tempurpedic pillow. If the dough squeezes together at the teeth marks or if the donut maintains an impression when you squeeze it gently then you've got yourself a good donut. In comparison, a standard grocery store donut stays at the same elevation all the way around after a bite. This one was airy but full. I don't know if that makes sense, you should really just try one for yourself. It was not too sweet, but glazed just the right amount. On a hot day the sugar didn't even make my hand sticky, it was more of a gentle sugar crust. They also do the bread for El Guero Canelo's Sonoran hot dogs so if you're into that, come here to stock up. read more

The Workers- Good The Atmosphere- Good The Price- Good The Location- Good The Product- So so, nothing impressive. I bought a nino envuelto (jelly roll) and it was extremely boring. Dry, flavorless, basically yellow cake. This pastry in particular should showcase a lot of flavor and excitement for your palate given what it is, but I didn't even finish it. The cochito was also an "ehh whatever" experience. Cochitos (in my opinion) should be squishy, have a nice silky sheen over them and taste somewhere in between gingerbread and easter bread. This was basically a gingerbread cookie in the shape of a pig. Most of it, excluding the center, crumbled like a cookie instead of like a pastry. I feel like this was a very white washed or Americanized version of Mexican pastries. Good effort, but I think I'm gonna pass on this place next time. read more

I brought some friends here from out of town and we got a marranito (pig-shaped molasses cookie), pumpkin empanada, what looked like a Swiss roll but may have been a yo yo, chocolate donut, and their famous glazed donuts.
