I was gifted a dozen glazed donuts today by one of my amazing faculty directors and they were so good! I walked the office sharing my treats and everyone was gasping and asking where they were from. So I asked and apparently they are from this wonderful bakery! I've never put in an order there myself, so I can't describe the service or the atmosphere- but I can say they make a dang good glazed donut. What a cool place in what first seemed like a sketchy area. Hubby went before to get freshly made tortillas and took the family this time. Very cute place, clean too. Great selection of pastries and donuts. The chocolate frosted donut with Bavarian cream is deeeelicious! Hubby got the cream filled churro, only $1.25. I mean, wow that sure beats Disneyland prices. Kids wanted one but were scared about the cream. When they tried their dad's they wanted their own. Haha. Guess we will have to go back! Went here after eating in the courtyard at a different restaurant. We got two cookies and checked out for a total of $2. We were shocked and confused and supper happy and surprised. Cuatro estrellas... soy un fan de La Estrella! I couldn't resist a visit to this tiny bakery during a recent visit to Tucson. I'd seen it before but didn't actually go in / make a purchase until now... and I don't know what I was waiting for! The woman working was super friendly, prices were very affordable, and the selection is fabulous... (See the pictures I took to get a glimpse into all of the authentic Mexican goodies they make and sell). I went home with a package of mini conchas, a couple of churros, and a couple of cookies, but I could have easily done a lot more damage. I hear their donuts are fabulous, and they also sell homemade tortillas and tamales. This place is indeed a Tucson gem worth a visit... especially if you're on the hunt for some visually appealing and tasty fresh baked goods. Enjoy! read more

Just picked up a few different pastries; super disappointed. Nothing authentic about their pastries except their eye catching forms/color. They skimp on the ingredients, mainly the spices. Their "piggies" as they are known in our family, (called maranitos?), lacked the taste of the spices that make them unique, & were either overbaked or day old.They were crunchy, especially around the edges. Their wedding cookies also lacked flavor; you could only taste the abundant, powdered sugar that coated them. Rest of my sampling ran about the same. The good: their empanadas had a generous amount of apple filling. As a TexMex, I know my Mexican pastries. I'll keep looking for the best in Tucson. read more

I came here to grab some baked goods, and it was a bit difficult to find inside the square. In any case, I eventually found it, and I got a bread with crunchy bits on top. The bread was fresh and it was $0.75 which was great! I really enjoyed it, should've gotten more than one! There's only sweet pastries here for anyone who's wondering. read more

Saw this place on YouTube and had to try it. I was closer to this one rather than the one on 12th Ave. the place is small, but had some amazing baked goods! I had trouble making up my mind when deciding what to eat. Bought some empanadas and other kinds of baked goods; I don't know the name of what I ordered, but loved the chocolate donut with the cream inside as well as the bread with custard inside of it. Will definitely return before I leave Tucson. My only suggestion is to put labels on the baked goods, it would make it easier for clients when selecting what to buy (especially people like me who aren't local to the area) read more

The Apple and Pumpkin Empanadas were soooo good! And, the Puerquito (or Marranito, whatever) had a really nice soft texture and great flavor! The prices are very reasonable. This place is a great Mexican bakery with Yuppie wrapping. You walk in and the shopping center gives the impression you can't afford to buy a pair of socks in the clothing store, but it's good selection of stores. I had to try a few times to get the menudo on the weekend. I missed two times because I showed up around 11 AM after chuch and missed out. The third time I went before church when they opened. I was suprised I was only given two choices a gallon or a half gallon of menudo if I recall correctly. It was well priced for the quantity, but that's more than I need for a meal. I bought the gallon because it was a bit of a better value. The menudo was excellent, but you needed to get your own extras like cilantro, onions, or oregano. I returned for a different occasion to get cookies and they were all excellent. Being from New Mexico I have my tortilla preferences. Their tortilla was different but amazing. If you're looking for Mexican baked goods make the trip here. read more

If there was a 6 star option, I would award this place 6 stars. The selection is massive, the location is charming, service prompt. But the real star is the FOOD. My panaderia dreams have come true. I could've ordered one of everything but limited myself to: pumpkin empanada, homemade tortillas, cinnamon roll, pig cookie, bollitos, glazed donut. All of them melted in my mouth, perfect texture/taste/sweetness. Can't say enough good things. I don't live in Tucson but will be coming back much more often just for this bakery!! read more

Great Mexican bakery, local family owned. I love the cochitos, little pig cookies. The empanadas are also very tasty. And, while the pastries are great to try, the tortillas, plain and chipotle, call for immediate opening and eating on the way home. This is my guilty pleasure. I make an effort to stop before going to Tumamock for a bathroom break at the Mercado San Agustin and then come to La Estrella for their chocolate long johns. I've brought empanadas many times to work, only to have them disappears in a short time. There are many Mexican breads and pastries. Also in the fridge by the counter are tortillas, chorizo, drinks and usually tamales and honey on the counter for sale. I've had it all. I'm a happy customer. The ladies behind the counter are always a delight and friendly as can be. This is truly a Tucson Treasure! read more

Totally a great place to grab Mexican pastries. The only downfall is getting there later in the day the bread is not as fresh and there's not much of a selection. Also I found some of the the pastries don't stay soft the next day even if you put them in a sealed container. I recommend not buying to many at once if their not going to be eaten the same day. The plus is being able to grab a coffee next door at Presta and enjoying your pastry in the Courtyard.. read more

This location is in a little city market. Super cute with some outdoor seating to enjoy snacks on site. I tried the pumpkin empanada, a puerquito and a glazed donut. The crust on the empanada is so delicious! Light and a little flaky. The puerquito was soft (read: fresh!) with a nice, not overly sweet flavor. The donut is a little thick but has good texture. I like that their pastries aren't oversized; they even have mini conchas. Makes it easier to try a variety. I definitely recommend this spot! read more

This was my first time to go in to this bakery, and I have heard about it through the reviews that it's the best in Tucson. My Favorite Mexican cookie, and forgive me I don't know the name of it, is the triangle shape three color cookie. So when I came in that's the first thing I looked for and they had it! For me, there are two things I love about a Mexican bakery. One, their cookies and pastries are not overly sweet. Two, there is always a lot of variety. However, for me there is two things I dislike Mexican bakery. One, I have no idea what the majority of things are going to taste like. Two, many of the pastries are dry and crumbly and fall apart when you go to eat them. Lastly, I'd like to add that the reason they didn't five stars... I told the girl about my favorite cookie upon entering and she helped me find them. Then when I ordered three of them and went out to my table back outside and opened the bag, she had given me three empanadas instead! Huh? I guess she wasn't paying attention or something??? So, I got back up and told her that she handed me the wrong items. She looked at me and open the bag and place the empanadas back in the case. (Isn't this against health regulations???) Placed the Tri-colored Mexican cookies I requested in the bag, handed me a few coins for the difference, and said nothing as I walked back outside with my bag. So the review of my favorite cookie was, it let me down. It was more crumbly and dry than many of the places I have tried in Tucson and other cities in California. However, I think I found a new fave... It looks like a large biscuit in the case. I asked the girl what it was and she said that they were cinnamon cookies. They tasted like a very cinnamon forward biscuit. I bought two of these too. This may be my new addiction for sure! read more

DEELICIOUS! My hubby and I wanted a pastry and some coffee after we had brunch. I'm so so glad we chose La Estrella! The best chocolate doughnut I've ever had in town is here! I will never have a Dunkin Doughnut ever again. The pan dulce was fresh and just like I remember having them in Mexico as a little girl. I had to have some too. I'll start my clean diet tomorrow, . Oh donuts: I hardly knew thee before La Estrella. Disregarding the utterly delicious care they put into each of their products, La Estrella's prices as compared to any brand-name cafe is enough to make them stand apart. And how far it does: prices are only the glaze on the proverbial donut, which by the way are the one thing I can't fail to herald. There is no other donut maker in town I would rather recommend or bag a dozen from. The chewy tanginess of their hand-made dough retains such a delicate moisture as you bite through the crystalline flakes that you will wonder why you ever bought donuts from a freeze-dried corporate donut maker again. I was also recently given a level of service I was not expecting even from a boutique bakery shop when on a quest to find a bakery that sold fresh bolillo rolls for party I was throwing and decided to make my own sonoran hot dogs. When I arrived the woman behind the counter explained I had ordered at their main bakery in South Tucson but that it was no problem as they had plenty there already that were fresh baked that day. She could also detect my clueless glaze at how to prepare what I was buying and offered advice on how to store them properly as La Estrella uses no preservatives. She even gave me a tip to steam the rolls on the day of the party, or brush melted butter on them if I was planning to heat them on a grill. I had no idea there was such a technique involved but I was extremely grateful as they turned out terrific for the party! Though I have a strong affinity for the cakes at another bakery in a central part of town, it's clear after one or two visits that this place owns an irreplaceable piece of Tucson's soul and completes the morning dynamic at Mercado San Augustin. read more
