We used to go to La Finestra in Lafayette and enjoyed it there but I have to say the Moraga location is better! They did a fantastic remodel of the place. It's our new happy spot! We enjoyed the Scalone very much and the cannelloni and fish the night my husband and I went. Recently I took some girlfriends for lunch and all commented how great everything was and that we would return. Live music on Friday, Saturday and sometimes Sunday night. Tony is a fantastic waiter and Jeff puts lots of love in every bite! We are lucky to have them in the community. read more

Came here for Mother's Day 2021, after waiting 35 mins for the waiter to take our order, the waiter seemed like he didn't have time for us. Ok...we placed our order and waited...aaaand waited, the. Waited some more, we asked to speak to the waiter as he was not really acknowledging our table and two couples that arrived after us had already been served their meals. When the food did come out mine was cold, my wife said hers was ok, my son did not enjoy his cheese ravioli. What kid doesn't enjoy pasta? I took a bite to check it and it had absolutely no flavor at all. My food was cold and just tasted like a mix of all sorts of ingredients. On top of it when I asked the waiter to take the ravioli off because it my son didn't want it, he stopped and looked at me in such a way that seemed he was upset. Bare in mind I hadn't complained about any of the issues based on the fact that he already wasn't attentive. So what would be the point. He reluctantly (by his body language said ok, in a mood. I asked him to bring our check so that we could salvage the rest of a perfectly good Mother's Day. He brought the check out with some complimentary biscotti and my son (due to the fact that he was hungry but didn't want anything else from this restaurant) grabbed a biscotti and took a bite. The waiter then said "oh now you're hungry" the nerve of this guy! My Son was hungry. He can't help it that your food was inedible with no taste! We still left him an $8.00 tip on a $60 check even though he deserved no such tip. Here's an added tip! Do better!!! read more

Stay away! This spot will leave a sour taste in your mouth. Average food and TERRIBLE service. Make sure to double-check your bill because they will overcharge you and make you feel guilty for pointing out inaccuracies. This is especially sad in a community like Moraga with so many seniors who wouldn't check their bill or would back down quickly during confrontation. We ordered pasta (very average) and alcohol. They acted shocked and annoyed when we pointed out inaccuracies in the bill ( they overcharged us on the bill by $20). They then sent over another employee to intimidate us and try to make us back down, feel bad, and try to admit fault. This was supposed to be a celebration dinner and it totally turned into an awkward and uncomfortable night. Stay away and find a better option that won't rip you off! Had a great first experience here! The food was delicious! We had the mushroom gnocchi and the spinach ravioli as well as the burrata appetizer with local Moraga tomatoes. The service was great! We loved the warm focaccia bread with olive oil that the serve before your meal. The icing on the cake was the complimentary biscotti with Marsala wine that they serve after your meal! My wife and I went there for lunch a few weeks ago, but, sadly, we had to walk out or die of hunger. We did get the standard bread as we waited for the staff to take our order. After 20+ minutes and several passes by the staff, we gave up, left a few dollars on the table, and walked out. It wasn't like they were busy, as only about half the tables were occupied and other folks were being attended to. Maybe it was because I was wearing shorts, but, it's Moraga at a shopping center and its lunch! We may try the place again in a few months, after they get the bugs worked out. La Finestra is a wonderful addition to Moraga. I had lunch there with my mother and cousin. I was very happy with the food selection and quality. While the choices were not uncommon Italian options, the presentation of every item and the qaulity of the food was unexpectedly wonderful. We enjoyed a fabulous meal last night. We ordered the baked halibut special which came with risotto and vegetables. The risotto was unusual in that it was not a puddle and the grains were perfectly cooked. The foccaccia and dipping sauce were delicious. Our appetizer was a spinach and ricotta dumpling, equally delicious. Peggy was our server and she was charming and friendly. Everyone was equally charming and friendly. Had an early dinner tonight with my wife. Food was excellent and the staff from the owner on down was uniformly friendly. La Finestra has only been open a few weeks in Moraga, so there's some new workers, but the owner, Tony and others are there to ensure continuity with the restaurant we came to love when in was in Lafayette. The menu is a bit slimmed down, but my guess is that it will expand as operations get more efficient. The wonderful frito misto that was a favorite of mine in the old place is not available, yet. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it will become available in the future. We live in Moraga and are very pleased that a new restaurant of this quality is now in our town. We have a few white tablecloth establishments, but the residents want more. If you haven't been to Moraga, you'll probably be charmed by the rustic beauty of the place and be pleased by the plentiful parking available around our retail establishments. read more

We had a wonderful experience at La Finestra last night, fine dining at its best! Everything from the cocktails to food to service and ambiance was amazing and with great attention to detail. The uva passa for appetizer was delicious and very creative. The lasagna was excellent and seafood pasta was very juicy and flavorful. This was all while we were listening to a soothing beautiful live piano performance playing in the background and sipping on chardonnay. Jeff the owner is like a celebrity here, guests know him very well and while we were there we saw a few groups requesting to meet him and he was very hospitable, passionate and warm to his fans and guests. The Phoenix has risen from the Ashes ! The food is great. Kids menu with really good portions and excellent prices. Live piano, super clean throughout. I like the location better than Lafayette and the parking is ... well, there is lots of parking in this particular shopping center. I recommend the lamb shank when he has it as a special (Darn, it is a limited thing I bet YOU order it when I'm there and you get the last one !) The service was excellent. You know in a new location you have to work out the choreography for the bar, the kitchen, assigning tables, bus/water etc. Takes some time - but when we were there we were at the very end and it worked, so that's great. read more

This is a favorite of mine. I was so disappointed when the restaurant in Lafayette was closed due to a fire. I am very pleased that this fabulous restaurant reopened in Moraga and that the food is just as delicious as ever! I have a few favorites, grilled polenta covered in a garlic mushroom gravy, herbed chicken salad with a creamy lemon Parmesan dressing, Salmon spinach salad, pasta with bolognese sauce, and Osso Bucco when it's on the menu. Fresh focaccia is always on the table and the wait staff are very friendly. The prices are fair considering the quality of the food. The scalone (scallop + abalone) appetizer is divine. The mushroom soup is killer too. Even the dip they bring you of olives, garlic, mint, balsamic and olive oil (to eat with fresh focaccia) is incredible. Two enthusiastic thumbs up. read more

Took some friends for lunch there and was quite disappointed. Took a very long time to get the food and once we got it, it was tepid at best and so-so in quality. Had to send one plate of food back to be warmed up and the food came back slopped onto another plate. Was very surprised to get the bill and find a 3.5% surcharge for the use of a credit card with no notice anywhere ahead of time. They "graciously" stated there would be no surcharge for the tip. Really? Neither fine dining establishments nor fast food places have a credit card surcharge. Seemed to me like a bait and switch or money grab kind of thing. Cons: long delay between ordering and receiving appetizers and main courses. Contrary to another reviewer, our food was bland. One of the appetizers was not presented in a pleasing way - the food was tender, but there was something missing. The risotto was subpar. I can't help but wonder about the positive reviews of this place. We visited today, Sunday, after shopping in the Moraga Farmer's Market. My husband wanted to try it, because it is so pretty. Not many places have white tablecloths anymore. After seeing Scalone on the menu, we both decided to be careful in our ordering. We have only encountered scalone once before, and we know that we want to avoid it. It reminds me of a thick slice of bologna made from fish. We think it is disgusting. I tend to avoid places that have it on their menu. After our bread came, we knew we had made a mistake. We should have gone to Amaroma. The bread was pasty, dense, and not very fresh. After the bread, we decided that we had better be careful in our ordering. We also became aware of the fact that the restaurant does not make authentic carbonara. They make an American style with cream. I decided to be super safe and order the Casear salad (a salad originating from Tiajuana, Mexico) and the grilled eggplant slices filled with ricotta, and served in a tomato sauce. My salad was hopelessly over-dressed, but it was edible. The eggplant dish was truly terrible. The eggplant tasted old, and the sauce tasted old and canned. One bite was enough. It was not Italian. Nothing was Italian. My husband ordered Mushrooms in Brodo. Brodo means broth, but he did not get mushrooms in broth. He got a heavy cream of mushroom soup, that was not very tasty. He also ordered what he thought would be a 'safe' meatball sandwich which is really an Italian-American item. It came on a 'brioche' roll which was dense, pasty, and not very fresh. The meatballs were not very good, but the tomato sauce was worse. It was probably the same awful stuff that was on my eggplant. Three hours later, he is still muttering about La Finestra serving the worst Italian food he has ever tasted. I disagree, because it is not Italian. It may have been the worst food he has ever eaten, but it was definitely not Italian. We spend a lot of time in Italy, and I learned to cook in my mother's Italian restaurant kitchen. On the positive side, I had some very authentic Italian Prosecco at La Finestra, and our waiter was very nice. read more

If you want real Italian please keep looking. The food here is barely better than Olive Garden- either over or underseasoned, and the portion sizes are gigantic. The service was mediocre- we had to flag a waiter for several minutes to let them know there was an error. Given the hype we were so excited to have a local go-to for dinner, but this is really just embarrassing as a representation of Moraga. Save yourself some pennies and your time: You can microwave the same lame Alfredo from the freezer aisle at Safeway, and for a tenth of the price. read more

Pretty much phenomenal. I never had the opportunity to try this restaurant in its original location in Lafayette. So today was my first chance to sample the cuisine in their new location in Moraga. I was blown away with the first bite. Indeed, every taste, every sip, of my entree and cappuccino was perfect. I was disappointed initially when I saw that their lunch menu basically had dinner prices. The disappointment vanished as soon as I tried the shrimp ravioli with fresh spinach and tomatoes in a Gorgonzola cream sauce. La Finestra is a little pricey, especially for lunch (entrees are in the $18 to $28 range) but the quality of the food and the superb service will bring me back soon for a nice evening out. If you are in the Moraga area, be prepared for a major treat. read more

Husband and I went to dinner here for a date night and it was terrible. The bread isn't like any bread I've ever had at an Italian restaurant, it's very dense and crumbly, almost like biscotti. We got the special burrata with "vine ripened tomatoes", but it was just an unripe beefsteak tomato cut into quarters. Then we had the meatball appetizers, which were burned. Veggies that come as a side with entrees are bland and overcooked. Entrees were equally unremarkable, everything was just bleh. My husband and I couldn't understand how this place is still in business. The first thing we both said when we left was "that was the worst Italian food I've ever had". We aren't high maintenance types, but we had two really surprisingly bad dinners here and wont be trying it again for a while. The first time they didn't realize they were out of one of the meals ordered until the other meal was served... The replacement meal of mushroom pasta was actually inedible due to an obsene amount of oregano dumped all over it. The second was equally bad. We enjoyed many fine meals at the original La Finestra in Lafayette and were saddened to hear of the devastating fire that destroyed the old location. We were, consequently, delighted that the restaurant had relocated to Moraga -- until we ate there. The food is simply not up to the standards of the original location and there are many better and less noisy and expensive options for Italian food a short drive away. We used to go the Lafayette location before the place burnt down. Happy to learn that they reopened in this Moraga location. Being it is a Tuesday night, we drove over to have a early (5:15) dinner. We were asked if we had reservations and of course we didn't. They were all booked for the night. But they did accommodate us, as long as we were done in an hour or so. Food is still good and the service too. Next time we will make reservations!! read more

Same great food in a nicer decor - that sums up the new La Finestra. All the menu favorites from the Lafayette site - including scalone, a must for anyone who loves abalone or anyone who has longed to try abalone. The kitchen is larger which means mains come out quickly. The wait staff is attentive but not over bearing. As an added bonus, the new restaurant is really beautiful. As a double bonus, the prices appear to be the same as in Lafayette. We've tried it three times and have had a wonderful experience every time. Enjoy! read more
